Take off, you Garba-hosers

March 12, 2008 |  9:19 am

PROGRAMMING NOTE:  Join us at 11 for Purple, Gold, and Blue.  Our guests will be Matt Moore of Hardwood Paroxysm, who organized yesterday's nationwide "Kobe Bryant Blog Day," and Kevin Baxter, baseball writer for the LAT.  Click the show widget on the side of the page to tune in.

Because who doesn't love a hybrid of Jose Garbajosa and "Strange Brew?"
Brew2
The latter is a cult film from Canada, the country housing the Toronto Raptor squad that employs Garbajosa.  The same team, incidentally, that the Lakers defeated by a 117-108 margin.  The Raptors were working without the services of their all-star power forward Chris Bosh, but during the first quarter, you'da thunk he was out there balling and manning the paint.  The Lakers launched 10 shots from behind the arc during that frame alone (32 in all), a tally that displeased Phil Jackson so thoroughly that he opted to play seldom-used Coby Karl as a means of sending a message (in particular to Sasha Vujacic, who still hasn't sold his coach on any "Machine" status, a nickname prompting research from T.J. Simers). The note was not only received, but Karl actually acquitted himself nicely. That "other Kobe" had a quite the ballgame, too.  After starting the contest  equally guilty of long ball fever, Kobe shifted into a controlled mode, and in turn controlled the game for the Lakers.  His 34/7/7 in the box score reflected a night not only found himself typically on the right side of a long jumper, but helped his teammates get a little action of their own.  It often looked effortless, at least compared to the time he needed to rack 81 points to put down this same opponent.

The Laker D hasn't been at its best without Andrew Bynum or Trevor Ariza.  The former is progressing  through work on a futuristic treadmill, while the latter's presence could be duplicated to some degree if the Lakers opt to sign Ira Newble, recently waived after a trade to Seattle.

Kobe Bryant: the all-time #2 with a bullet.

If the Clippers are looking to lift a locker room's spirit and mood down the stretch of a disappointing season, we can all agree, Smush Parker is just what the doctor ordered.  He's been recently freed from exile in Miami, a status Pat Riley insists wasn't personal.  Sure didn't feel that way, Riles.

AK,

"Everyone knows people from St. Louis aren't funny."

I think it was Steve Martin who, when asked "Steve, how can you be so bleeping funny?" said "I put a piece of bologna in each shoe, and that way I FEEL funny!"

Do you know if Bynum is still doing "classroom" work with Kareem? (i.e. studying film, discussing tendencies of other players and effective responses)

Jon's Simple Direct Thoughts Of The Day:

1. I'm glad we beat those damned Canucks last night.

2. I'm a bit concerned that we let them hang around as long as we did with Chris Bosh out.

3. The K Brothers beat me to the punch! I was going to write a long "Strange Brew" and "Take Off To The Great White North!" blog entry when I woke up this morning.

4. It will annoy me to no end if the Clippers sign Smush Parker. I guess they think bad chemistry will pull them out of the basement of the Western Conference.

5. Sexist as this may be, modelesque female sportscasters annoy me to no end.

6. When I see some model turned sportcaster on the sidelines of a football game, my thought is always, "What the hell is she doing there?"

7. It was a pleasant surprise to see Coby Karl inserted in the second quarter.

8. Coby plays well with the minutes he has. I'd like to see him get more than garbage time more often.

9. We're going to have to step up our game NOW! Tough stretch ahead.

10. Mark Cuban is a tool. The Lakers need to win this Mav game for the K Brothers.

11. If we're not able to somehow get Dit Da Jow to Bynum, Ariza, and Mihm, I'm going to be very disappointed. These are three of my favorite players.

12. There is more oil in the tar sands of Alberta than there is in all the combined oil wells across the globe. One more reason to invade Canada!

13. I really enjoy the daily roll call. It's good for the blog.

14. I want to see Pau Gasol start pulling off the sky hook.

15. I firmly believe the collective coaching and training staffs of the NBA should form a union to mitigate the stupid decisions that David Stern makes as a means of selling out the league.

16. My dog's getting cancer surgery tomorrow. I'm worried about her. I hope she'll be okay.

17. Charles is one cool dude. Maybe he'll be able to get Trevor Ariza some Dit Da Jow.

18. If the training staff refuses to even look at the potential benefits of high quality Dit Da Jow to present injuries of Bynum, Kobe, Ariza, and Mihm, then they (including Gary Vitti) should be fired. I'm dead serious.

19. Hillary Clinton is an alien in a human suit. Watch the way she blinks. It's unnatural. Reptillian.

20. I'd really like to see Kobe Bryant have another 80+ point game just because he needs some other historic performance to get all the Haters to give him some just acknowledgement of his specialness.

21. I hope Sun Yue is able to be good enough for the team next year. He's sure to bring Dit Da Jow to the locker room.

22. I'm looking forward to the Rockets game tremendously, but the team I want to beat most in the upcoming stretch are Mark Cuban's Mavericks.

23. Hey, anyone notice that Dirk Nowinski won the MVP last year instead of Kobe? What the hell?

24. The Raptors have the lamest mascot in the NBA.

25. Are we going to have to stage daily protests outside the L.A. Times Building to get T.J. Simers fired? If the L.A. Times doesn't care about quality, at least it's readers still do.

26. I miss Jim Murray and Chick Hearn. It just seems like the media is more concerned with not offending anyone instead of taking risks in an concerted attempt to nurture Greatness.

27. At least Ralph Lawler is still around. You've got to love a sportcaster named "Ralph".

28. Luke Walton and Rad Vlad need some Dit Da Wan. I'm sure Charles would agree.

29. I've tried to call up on the K Brothers live internet radio show, but have never been able to get in.

30. I expect the UCLA Bruins to win the Pac-10 Tournament.

31. I hope the Clippers get a phenomenal draft pick this year. It's good for Los Angeles for the Clippers and Lakers to be successful and reasonable competitive with one another.

32. If Corey Maggette skips the Clippers next year, I hope he becomes a Laker. That would be great.

33. Sam Cassell's a jerk. Now that he's a Celtic, I can hate on him again.

34. Ronny Turiaf looks like the alien from "Predator." I mean that as a compliment.

35. I wish JJ still posted on this blog.

36. Liquid sea minerals, vitamin D, and Dit Da Jow is the answer.

37. I really hope the K Brothers mention the above to the injured players. I don't think they will, unfortunately, and that is very disappointing to me. I have a seriously deep knowledge of these things, like it or not.

38. I'd like to hear more information about how active Kareem has been as a coach since Andrew Bynum has been injured.

39. I think the East Coast media has not been fair to Kobe Bryant.

40. I don't like David Stern. He seems like a weasel.

41. I feel righteous disgust at the knowledge that LeBron James chose endorsements over "doing the right thing" and denouncing the genocide in Darfur, and acknowledging China's role in that genocide.

42. I'm grateful that I'm a natural Lakers fan.

NO MVP? NO PEACE!

GO LAKERS!

defense must improve. if it doesn't, the lakers won't even make the western conference finals.

pau gasol needs to step up his inside game on both ends. the honeymoon is over gasol, time to start earning your dough inside the paint. gasol should be matching or nearing odom's rebounding totals every game.

finally some positive news with bynum. i sincerely hope that the lakers do not rush him back. the kid's future is too bright, and so is the lakers. if the knee does not heal properly in next 3-4 weeks, the lakers should put bynum on the shelf so he is 100% healthy for next year.

c'mon lake show...we're a contender now - time to start fine tuning that defense for the playoffs...i really wish we had ariza and bynum right now...

Mamba24, you commented that the original Mamba beat the logo as the best guard of all time but No. 2 to MJ. How about Mamba24? He is the best blogger of all time, Mark Cuban will beg Mamba24 to visit not only the Dallas locker room or even his bedroom. lol! Are you Client No. 10 in DC?

Well, I think the Lakers lowered the expectations of the teams that they will meet during the road trip by playing funky and junkie in the last two games. Pau and Vlad are still sleepwalking, Luke is still missing those shots and they just prop up Coby Karl asthe new decoy for the real Kobe. Kobe could not use his right hand for blocking so he uses the right hand of Coby.I still believe when the championship objective is on the line, Kobe and PJ will be serious in their profession in guiding the youth. One thing good about this trip, there is a rest in between games, no b2b except the last game on Jazz and Sonics. This will be the test of what they are made of, whether the theory of HGF(hisgoodfortune) LakerTom will be correct in saying that this is another dynasty team. IMHO I think this is just another bunch of 4 games on the road as a part of the 82 games.

Based on PJ's goal, they have to get 60 wins before giving away the 20th loss. In my case, if they don't play DEFENSE on the road, they should just take the Greyhound bus in coming home. lol!

Jon K,

I hope your dog does okay. As a lifelong pet owner, I can feel that anxiety.

AK

Good Morning Charles, Good Morning Mamba24!!!

Another GLORIOUS DAY IN LA LA LAND!!!!

What a wonderful place to be!

Last night was a classic Milton Berle game for the Lakers - as coined by Simmons, they only pulled out enough to win.

Good thing they shot lights out from 3 or it could have been ugly.

But, as we say here, A Win is A Win is A Win.

What a great season we are having so far. But I beg of the TRUE LAKER FANS HERE (not the pretenders cause they're salivating right now), if the next 4 games go a little rough, DO NOT DESPAIR!!! If you stuck with this team for the last 2 years, why would you jump now?

In the playoffs you only need to win just over half your games, and if you win half the road games, you are pretty much guaranteed the title. AND DON'T GET CONFUSED - THESE ARE PLAYOFF GAMES. These teams are salivating to play us and measure themselves, not to mention get revenge.

But the good news is that the Lakers can MEASURE THEMSELVES and maybe get a little preview of what that intensity will be like for our young players. It is different being on top and having the bullseye on your back, they need to learn what that feels like.

But don't give THE TROLLS the satisfaction of your anger. And don't freak out if national types start jumping off the bandwagon. We are the fans, we are the ones that matter.

TRUE FANS BELIEVE!!! DO YOU BELIEVE??!?!?

Dit Da Pau!!!

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

I BELIEVE, I BELIEVE, I BELIEVE

Good morning everyone..(who is not a troll that pops up after a loss)...

Last nights game...1..TJ Ford killed our guards last night..with ease...How many times did he get into the keyway for those little running hook shots..?

Ira Newble...Would be good to have on the team if not for offense then just for DEFENSE that LUKE AND VLAD DONT PLAY..AT ALL.....At first i thought what about Ruben Patterson...Then i thought we need someone a little more mentally stable for the locker room..

Im already having nightmares about Chris Paul and Deron Williams

EDWIN GUECO:"Mamba24, you commented that the original Mamba beat

Jon K.

David Stern is a lawyer. I think your thought is simply redundant. LOL

Also, at least Erin Andrews was an athlete, but yeah I hear you.

JOHN STOP READING THOSE DAVID ICKE BOOKS
IMMEDIATELY! LOL! I BEG YOU MAN THEY'LL
ROT YOUR BRAIN, JUST LOOK AT ME LOL!

Jon k,

You are way cooler than I am. Just like Mamba24, and the rest of the peeps in the roll call.

Either way I got you man!!!

Lowered expectations after the past 3-4 mediocre games will hopefully help the team relax and execute instead of looking way ahead to the playoffs. I guess it's only befitting that our players are as cocky as us Lakers fans. We already awarded them the trophy after reaching the WC for two days (Bynum days) and going 7-2 on the road trip, ignoring that it was mainly against crummy teams.

Humility is a very under-rated quality...

Laker Truth, I feel you with regards to your statements about Farmar, Sasha and Fish..It's like they are on a mission to "out shoot" one another. Maybe they have a side wager with respect to who can score the most points or something. Either way, 3's out of the flow of the offense and one-on-one play has ZERO play in the triangle unless yoru name is Kobe!! LOL For real tho, that is DEF not either of their games and all the crying when the go to the basket as if the refs are gonna give Farmar, Sasha and Fish a foul is out the question. Occasionally, they get lucky and find the basket driving but not often. Just like us, the REFs know, that is not characteristic of either of their games so no, they are not gonna get a call. Sasha and Farmar need to develop and in-between game otherwise, find the OPEN man or the better percentage shot as far as making a play for a teammate.

Sometimes, I feel like Kobe or somebody needs to corral them cuz they do have the tendency to get out of control. Hopefully, they RIGHT that as we move onward.

RydeOrDie Baby!

CHARLES:"You are way cooler than I am. Just like Mamba24, and the rest of the peeps in the roll call."

CHARLES STOP THIS! STOP THIS NOW! When they invented
the word cool they had to search and search and then they
saw you and EUREKA! COOL a new word added to
the vocabulary thanks to Cool @ss CHARLES! LOL
PEACE

Good morning Laker fans, Charles, Mamba24, etc.

Good win (not a good game). Glad to see Coby Karl getting some real minutes to really gauge his potential.
If JC were still here he would probably be getting lots of minute these past few games the way Farmar has been playing lately. Hopefully he'll snap out of it soon enough.
Too many 3s, not enough D. Lets see how we respond during this road trip.

Sean714, thanks for the info on Newble, I wasn't aware that he could be eligible for the playoffs.

Jon K, good luck with your dog's surgery. Dogs rule.

Disgruntled Laker Fan, thanks for the link, it does look weird, it probably looks even weirder with a 7 footer in it.

have a good day all!

AK/BK-

In last night's audio Coby Karl (son of George) mentions how much you write about his running. In general, how aware are the athletes of the blog and your coverage on them? Do you get the impression some of them spend their time reading up on themselves or just get word from friends of the occasional tidbit?

Or are they secretly logging in here under aliases to get in on all the comments action (i.e. exhelodrvr is secretly Jordan Farmar)

AK/Charles/Mamba/Blog,

Thanks for the thoughts about Delilah, my dog. Pound dog that I've had since she was four months old. Best dog you could ask for. I've saved her life five times, including choking a pit bull out who attacked her and wouldn't let go.

I hope she's okay.

And by the way, she's a Lakers fan! She knows the word "Laker". When it's a very exciting game and it's down to the wire, I'll say to her, "Delilah! Come on! We need you! Go Lakers! Go Lakers!" and she'll get all excited and start barking at the television.

Just a fantastic dog.

GO LAKERS!

Okay, I was one of the people last summer who was predicting
this would be a 55 win season. But there were a LOT of people
predicting 45 wins and some even predicting 42 wins and a first
round exit.

Fess up. Who were all the people predicting doom and gloom?

:-)

put me on the roll call Mamba

Why did Riles release Smush now. According to the Ira Newble article, if you were released before March 1 you could participate in the play offs. What's up with that? You know your team stinks, so you sabotage other possible teams?

Nice to get back in the win column after that debacle against Sactown.

I think Phil's observation that it seemed like "we kind of lost our minds out there" was poignant. I certainly kinda lost mine watching it.

It was nice to see Coby Karl having trouble holding back a smile after his crucial contributions in the 2nd.

Don't want to hate on Pau...but his recent defensive play has me calling him "El Matador".

I'm worried about Kobe's pinky on the defensive end. Kobe's right hand is nonexistant on D. Every swipe, poke or grab is with the left hand only. If we expect to knock of San Antonio, we will need a fearless defensive effort from Kobe with both hands.

Looking forward...I love this team. I especially look forward to the return of Bynum and Ariza whenever it happens.

A big thanks to Kupchak for his patience and foresight. I'm proud to say I never hated on our dear Cupcake.

Peace.

has anyone else noticed that they changed the gametime for sundays game at houston to 3:30 so that it could be on ABC?

I miss Chick too. He always said it like it was. Never cheesy. Chick and Stu together was the best.

Pig

I think it goes without saying that most people who read and write in this blog would agree the Laker's Defence is lacking.

Many suggested that the problem lies with the Lakers being too soft, or that the intensity is lacking, or other teams are becoming more physical with us, or the fact that we miss the inside presence of Andrew Bynum.

While all of the above is true, I would like to make another suggestion from my personal observation...

Ever since Pau Gasol came on board, the floor has opened up quite a bit that the perimeter shooters are getting a lot of good looks. We are having to work less to get a good shot. The ease of scoring points has created an attitude that the defence will work with same amount of effort.

It has become quite obvious to me that the attitude of our boys is that the opponents will eventually start to miss their shots on their own. Unfortunately, in the NBA, this rarely happens.

Good defence lead to easier offence, but not the other way around!

The upcoming road trip will be a difficult one, but it may be a blessing in disguise. When you do not play defence on the road, you are done!

Come on, Lakers, let's put it together on both ends of the court!!

Yep, far as I know, they're on at 12:30 local time Sunday. 19 in a row vs. #1 will do that. It also means I should be out of the building in time for my fantasy baseball draft. Really, everyone's a winner.

Regarding Coby K., in talking to him the other day at practice, he was apparently looking for an item Mike Bresnahan wrote about him, and came across the blog. Not sure if guys read it a lot, because frankly, we don't ask. I think those guys who pay attention to coverage on the team probably have come across it, though. I'm sure those who pay attention on their behalf do.

BK

Jon K,

Best Wishes again...

Sign Ira Newble for defensive purposes.

So Coby has visited our blog community?

Maybe he realized that we've seen him running all over the states. I was surprised to see him run by my street this morning... I thought it was odd since he got all that PT last night. But good to see that Coby is STILL runnin!

He must have been visiting his dad...

ha ha ha, seriously though, Coby had a terrific game last night. He's not really a liability anywhere and he can knock down that shot. I think PJ should use him more often when the team appears a little sluggish.

Good afternoon Mamba24, Charles, Jon K., and everyone else!

Jon K. - I hope your dog gets better and recovers soon.

Mamba24 - you are TOO FUNNY for the Smush Bandwagon

Charles - Mind if I ask you how you got started in the music business? I'm just curious about it.

Laker Nation - Let's celebrate this victory, knowing that we've got much more work to do before the playoffs. Go lake Show!

Wow, great game from Lamar. Weird to not see him as much in the 4th though. Maybe that's the best way to use him?

Coby great off the bench. Turiaf too. Both gave us effort and energy when our other guys were lacking.

Nice game from the Kobester after some earlier so so stuff. He took responsibility for his mistakes on D (tapping a closed fist to his forehead in one case) and came out with better than Lebron numbers at the end.

Anyone else notice that TJ Ford cat is very quick and fast? I think he's the quickest in the league, handily. It's kind of scary to watch.

Wow, Strange Brew (the movie that allowed me to understand Canadians) and David Icke all in one blog.

This place rocks.

And for the record, David Icke will rot your brain. Proceed with caution. He has a cool concept involving progressively greater levels of awareness, but the reptilian stuff is kind of freaky.

Amazing Happens,

>>>Yet people regularly compare different players' stats in
>>>an effort to determine who is the better player

So what do you suggest people compare? Their stunning calves?

You're probably hoping the Lakers will try to acquire Gerald
Green right now, aren't you?

Green is a key example of someone that everyone touts
as being ultra athletic and having a ton of talent. Yet the
worst team in the league traded him away and the team
they traded him to waived him.

Talent means NOTHING unless you actually produce. If
you have talent and no motivation or talent and no killer
instinct, then you don't produce stats. If you have both
talent and motivation, then you produce stats.

The only valuable players who don't produce stats are
lockdown defenders. For example, I'd say Raja Bell and
Bruce Bowen are two guys who are more valuable than
their stats would indicate.

Stats win games. It does you no good to have a team full
of "talented players with lots of upside" if they don't score
points, get rebounds, get assists, etc.

Stats aren't the ONLY thing you should consider when
comparing two players, but they are a very important factor... probably the most important.

last night i was browsing the political blogs and one article about spitzer started like what neil said yesterday during the game

Neil,

"Kobe risked his career and life by cheating on his wife"

nice to have cut and paste and other writers lines.

have some stats for thought

especially laker lover and gunner

or Laker "Gunner" Lover & Co. this bandwagon is growing daily with temporal members.

J.D. Hastings,

Touching on what BK said, our philosophy in regards to whether the players are reading the blog is basically "I don't know, and I don't want to know." I've never asked any player, nor do I plan to. There have actually only been two occasions I can ever recall specifically telling a player about something on the blog.

1) To let Ronny Turiaf know of the blog support while recovering from open heart surgery.

2) To let Lamar Odom know of the blog support after his son passed away.

That's pretty much it, to the best of my memory. Our basic philosophy is that if a player has a problem with a post, he'll let us know. Otherwise, I assume they either haven't read it or have and are fine with it. Or at the very least, their "people" who read stuff for them are fine with it. haha

AK

John K....good luck with your dog....I volunteer at Boxer Rescue LA.. pound dogs/rescues always seem to be the best dogs. If I already didn't have two boxers and a cat, I would take one home every weekend. Again, good luck with the pooch, and I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

It's so nice to be a lakers Fan these days.... Don't you think...

To Tell you all guys the truth.... I really really miss KLBESST, GUNNER, and the HATIN' GANG...

And I also, dreaming about MIKE T. in here somewhere...

I'm Glad Mamba24's the best blogger... otherwise... this blog is dead... sorry KAM BRO....

Go Lakers....

Go Kobe...

windfall wrote:
The flagrant foul call was bogus. Kobe's left hand came down squarely on ball. His right hand caught the shooter on his back but that was due to Ronny Turiaf pushing Kobe into the shooter.

The refs still make Kobe work under a handicap. He gets mugged under the basket on a regular basis with no call but he can't breath on a shooter without getting called for a foul.

I'd like to see the Lakers win but win or lose, I want to see a real game, not a WWF-like exhibition. The one thing that the NBA could do to improve the league is get consistent on fouls. If it's a foul, it should be called, regardless of when it occurs in the game or whether it's against the home team or one of David Stern's favorite players.

great post....

Been a long time since i posted here. I've been in the magical world of online league pass games from different sites for free. Lots of Lakers fans out there in the world, most of them are the ones responsible for bringing the games online for those of us less fortunate.

Anyway, just wanted to say we are looking good, and I am glad Mike T is gone.

Oh and AK/BK can u make the setting change for the FF browser so it doesnt go all the way to the bottom when you click on read on

Thanks
