Second verse, darn near same as the first
For the second time in two days, the Los Angeles Lakers play the Golden State Warriors and the results of this 123-119 victory sharing many a similarity with the previous day's loss at Staples. For starters, the first half featured the Lakers having apparently learned no lessons from Sunday, since the opening 24 minutes of both contests featured the Lakers seduced by the Warriors' break neck style and jacking up long ball after long ball. Like Sunday, wiser heads prevailed after halftime and the ball began moving around and inside again. Like Sunday, Lamar Odom was Godzilla on the boards, becoming the first Laker in 13 years to snag 20+ in consecutive games. Like Sunday, a few folks played through some pain (most notably Kobe Bryant, who left the Bay Area with gash below the the eye that most boxers would find nasty). But there were a couple unique wrinkles to the follow up go around against these Warriors. For starters, the OT period, one where the Lakers ground their way to the top (and admittedly benefited from a controversial call against Monta Ellis down the stretch). The other notable difference? A winning box score. That's probably worth noting, dontcha think?
Lakersblog readers either haven't noticed or are just shy about pointing it out in the comments, but Luke Walton's season hasn't always been up to snuff. In particular, his outside shot has vanished, an issue Phil Jackson cited as the root of all most issues. For a full description of his assessment, here's the pregame audio from yesterday's win. Of course, just because you've become proficient while bombing doesn't mean you're automatically in the cat bird seat. Sasha Vujacic, for example, has finally found that consistent stroke Laker fans have dreamed about since his rookie season. And if he put that shot on display any more often during Sunday's game, he might have ended up in a morgue.
The case for Kobe-MVP is growing by the game.
In the category of "things that don't earn you much respect in a cell block," we offer "throwing a beer on the Energy Solutions Arena court during the final seconds of a Laker game."
If Freddie Mercury was a Laker fan (and still alive, obviously), this is the ditty he'd have written.
Home court: Important and meaningless, all at once.
Donnie Walsh will soon take over as head of Basketball Operations for the Knicks. Guess that franchise is unfamiliar with the old expression, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Elton Brand is getting closer to a possible return to the court. For Nene, however, the quest remains slow goings.
With Dirk Nowitzki sidelined indefinitely, it's not inconceivable to envision the Mavs' season ending in mid-April.
No word yet as to whether the Oklahoma City "Still-to-be-named" will formally acknowledge the existence of Slick Watts.

Mamba 24, may I respectfully have charge of the mirrors on ALL of the bandwagons? I'll keep them clean so we can all clearly see every other NBA team BEHIND US.
MarkytheArky
Why all the bandwagons? Easy. When you're cruisin, its not where, it's with whom!
LETS GO LAKERS!
KOBE MVP

After watching the game again I still don't see how they won this game.
It should be LAMAR ODOM DAY today in LA.
I thought Kobe had a terrible game but I want Kobe at the line when it counts. The difference in confidence at the line is amazing from Lamar to Kobe. Lamar could barely lift his eyes up with BD and Jackson yapping but Kobe at the line saying you want some of this, its over, its over, We Laker fans have to love that confidence. It was never in doubt he was going to make both of those even with a bad pinky.
Only 2 more road games..Clips game doesn't count as a roadie... Its clear the #1 seed is within the Lakers grasp.
I expect to see Gasol on Wednesday, Mihm next week, and then the Big Piece Bynum on the 6th or 10th of April.
It is all good in LakerLand.

Thank you Mamba....you know I HATE the Celtics with every fiber in my body. I'm definitely the owner of that bandwagon. I check in on their games just to make sure they're losing. I get tickets to the games all the time from clients and end up giving them away (except when the Lakers were in town).
On another note...not that I'm a blood freak or anything like that but I love the picture of Kobe with the blood running down the side of his face. It just gives him that warrior kind of look...that "come at me if you want to" kind of look.
And by the way...I'm all for an easy 3 games of blowouts this week. These past two games haven't been good for my heart you know.
Love ya Mamba!

On last nights game another game was nearly lost. Again I feel due to lack of coaching. Yes PJ did improve by calling time outs and talking and coaching players but that is half the battle.
He still did not use players available and is draining our players for playoffs instead of resting them and distributing minutes.
Also by playing starters longer we run into risk of injury to them and easily could have lost Fish last night.
With playing Kobe for so many minutes he is burning Kobe out especially with his jump shots off.
With Kobe poor shooting last night he missed several 3's with one very early in the shot clock and let the Warriors back into the game. For every miss the Warriors came back and scored and tied the game up. Sasha too took ill advised 3 and Odom bailed him out with rebound. He took and missed a wide open 3 and Odom was open in post for higher percentage shot. All Lakers had to do to close the game out with no OT was to run the clock and work the ball to post with LO as the Warriors could not stop his penetration. IE pound the bal into the post and don't take unnecessary 3's.
This was an ugly win and yes a win none the less but you have to look at did this win cost us more than it should have? I think using Coby, Ira and DJ we could have beat this team and not worn down our starters.
To those that say don't bash Farmar well I agree but don't give him idol status either. He has not done a thing yet in the NBA and if he gets too arrogant he needs to be criticized for it and brought back to reality and become the star of the future because he is not the star now yet.
Someone said keep Farmar and let expiring contract go so we can sign FA's and other players. Like who? The only close expiring contract with enough money is LO. The way he is playing do you really want to let him go?
I compared him to Sun Yue and at the time I saw Sun Yue as contributing tha same as LO and contibuting more to Lakers with lower salary. I can't say that now so I have to back off that view. I would tend to say keep LO now, and see if we can keep him with a reasonable contract.

I love this team I dont know if the can haul it in this year yet but they seem to win the gut check games...seriously the third game of the road triip and now this? Im impressed.

Justa,
I am sure Phil played Kobe more minutes then he wanted to but did he have any other option they are already thin and we saw what some of the other guys did in crunch time. Terrible turnovers by Luke and Ronnie that essentially should have lost us the game. Vlad is not real secure with the ball so who do you want in there instead?
I am sure Phil saw the weak two home games coming hope and assumed he needed the win is GS and hopefully can get some blowouts wed fri and rest the starters 4th quarter.

One thing to consider for those of you upset Newble didn't get more run, beyond the fact he hasn't practiced with the team, doesn't really know the offense nor have any cohesion with his teammates on D, he's also not really in basketball shape. Talking to him last night, he said he did as much cardio, etc. while he was in his layoff (which was around 40 days, I believe), but that's not even close to the same thing. To stick a guy who doesn't know his teammates, isn't in shape, and can't run the offense in tight games against a good running team is a recipe for disaster.
People need to understand that, right now at least, the Lakers are shorthanded. They go about eight deep, and it's a rotation of imperfect players. Everyone's minutes go up, and the options for mixing and matching go down.

11 games to go and our toughest remaining games are:
AT: PORTLAND and three home games against Portland, SA and New Orleans. We've also got the Mavs at home once, but that shouldn't be a tough game w/o Nowitzki.
At worst we should end the season with 56 wins if we drop all the ones I listed above and all the others. I think you can pencil the Lakers in for about 58 wins with an outside shot at running the table and ending with 60.
That'd be pretty sweet. We haven't won 60 games or more since 99-00, when we won the first of our three-peat titles.

still missing two big guns.
how about helene elliot's uber-obvious article title from yesterday "the lakers need gasol, bynum back asap"

talk about stating the obvious.

and for the luke debate, here is what the deal is:
on a mediocre laker team (the past 3.5 seasons), luke walton was a pretty good player.
on a vastly improved and deeper laker team (the past half season), luke walton is a below average player.
luke walton didn't change.
the talent on the lakers roster did.
and luke simply isn't as talented as most of the lakers on the current roster.

Mamba24 - don't forget to add me to the above-mentioned bandwagons as per my previous posts...
Also - glad to see the "blog crew" bouncing back & not griping about LO so much. The boy is a BEAST on the boards (Stu's nickname for him is the Windex man) and I also appreciate him diving into the lane ala "swiss army knife". I LOVE his game - he's really picked it up lately - 20/20 for the first time in 13 (?) years???!!! WOW - he's a keeper - no question! You've got to love the mentality now, not to mention the huge effort.
That being said, I would LOVE to see some Coby Karl and Beng Diddy time over the course of the rest of the season. Our starters could use the rest and the other guys need to feel the pressure to win now, before the playoffs. You never know what will happen then and we need everyone to be ready to go.

Folks: PJ is keeping Luke in there now because he needs a big body and to keep others out of foul trouble. When we get a couple more bigs back and guys move to their natural positions - Luke will definitely be riding pine. But for the time being, we need him to be on the floor and have some confidence to keep the ball moving.
While some here have said to put Newble in - I don't think Newble is ready in the triangle flow yet which is why he is only getting junk minutes. Hopefully, he will have a bunch of junk minutes over next 2-3 games, get comfortable and PJ will play him more.
But I think we have to be realistic with the last 11 games and the "spoiler teams". We have 6 should win games and 5 that are going to be tough wins given the WC standings. PJ is going to have a very short leash with anyone not playing within the system against teams like Dallas, Sac (2), NO, SA.
The next three should be where the bench mob and all others get to shine and give the starters much needed rest!
GO LAKERS!

Nemaia,
I thought about throwing the Sacto games in there as well, but I think the combination of getting Pau back, remembering how we slipped up at Arco last month and needing to lockup home court in the west we'll be able to take those games.
I do agree though, that the Kings are more talented than their record suggests.

I agree with you, Phil picked on Luc Longley, Tony Kukoc, and now Vlad, what's the hell is he thinking? You signed European player and ask them to be good defenders? No way, even Lamar is not good defender. I saw Lakers and Detroit in Final, and Phil put Luke on the floor to run trial angle offense, result....5,6 turnovers, at that time, Luke was a rookie, Phil had high hope for Luke, he thought Detroit was stupid, they couldn't guard Luke, i bet you, untill now he still has high hope for Luke and Kwame. Every year, i hear the same excuses, Lakers are young, injuries, but one thing this year, Portland won 13 games in a row, Houston won 23 games in a row, Lakers won 3,4 games and lost, whenever Lakers has a good momentum, Phil lets players taking day off, or cancel shooting around, next game they lost, is that the smart coaching plan ?
