Eastward ho!

March 13, 2008 |  9:38 am

The Lakers are about to hit the road for a challenging roadie (New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Utah, every other day) and the excursion comes on the heels of a six-game stretch that's included four victories.  That sounds great on the surface, except that none of wins (Clips aside) featured much in the way of ease.  In particular, the defense hasn't always been up to snuff.  Should the Lakers expect to come out of this bad boy with at least a .500 mark to show for it, they'll need to dig deep and prove able to create stops.   They'll also continue to need help from their bench, which has thankfully been a request mostly gone fulfilled this season.  As noted, the second game will be against the Rockets, they of the 20-game win streak currently in the works.  That clip of prosperity may strike Laker fans as inconvenient during this tight Western Conference, but that aside, they'll all admit, pretty damn impressive (despite a choppy victory last night).

One year ago today, Isiah Thomas went from appearing on the verge of being formally banned from NBA employment to an extension with the Knicks.  The results have remained steadily craptacular.  Of course, Larry Bird's been arguably as craptacular with the Pacers, but with half the scorn.   If John Paxson's not careful, he may start getting mentioned in the same breath as these two.

Can Caron Butler keep up with Kim Kardashian?  We'll find out at his birthday party?

Greg Oden finally gets an official workout with his Blazer mates.

D-Wade's rehab approach has sent shockwaves through the NBA.  Wait, scratch that.  He's undergoing shockwave treatment.

Love that roll call. The vital member of the blog. sigh...

*REPOST* because I want Marco to see it, it took a long time to write, and damn, it was beautiful. lol.

Marco64,

Oh My! Where to start? Basically William Smush Parker was a very good street baller from New York City who spent some time at Fordham. He left early for the draft and his coach, predictably, said he wasn't ready yet. I don't know if there were other issues, but basically Parker wasn't ready for the truth, and he left on bad terms.

Don't know if he was drafted or not (I'll guess no) and he floated from team to team, basically living off of 10 day contracts. Well, Phil likes his tall guards so Smush was signed by the Lakers to very small salary. Less than a million. But he was the only player to play the full 82 games in the 05-06 season.

He did as well as he could adapting to the triangle which is very complex. He was hot and cold. Alternating from brilliant, athletic plays to the most boneheaded-want-to throw-something-at the tv moves. Very inconsistent and played what we call "matador" defense which means he tried to poke the ball for the steal. The problem was that was the only defense he would play.

(meanwhile Jordan Farmar is drafted)

Smush is back with the club with another low contract even though he played 82 + games the previous season. His bad attitude, perhaps exacerbated by the fact that he wasn't getting star treatment even though he was a starter for the Los Angeles Freaking Lakers plus Jordan Farmar's quick adjustment to the triangle sealed his fate. By the time the playoffs rolled around Farmar was playing more meaningful minutes than Smush. But to be fair, there was nothing Smush could do to make a happy ending for the Lakers in an injury-riddled season.

Now Smush is a big joke around here, but that's not really fair to him. He did what he could. He served as a point guard in a system that doesn't really need a true PG. He had a tough background and overcame a lot of it. I think the problem is that he never matured, never appreciated what was in his hands at the time and as a result lost it.

Why do I say that? Well, there was a reason he never found a home until the Lakers took him. Phil is known to have a soft spot for unconventional players. Of course he was no superstar, but I think his attitude problems stood in the way as there are lots of opportunities for role players.

Here's an example. He impressed the Heat enough to give him a $2M contract. Yet, he was benched for disciplinary reasons. That's not basketball problems. That's personal problems. This is a forgiving league. You can screw up, but if you work and play hard you'll find a place.

Smush was a good guy who did good things, but like many other players he was the target of jokes on this cruel, cruel blog we all love and enjoy. Nothing more, nothing less.

We wish Smush all the luck in the world and I hope the LA people are not cruel to him when he dons the red & blue.

(bloggers, feel free to correct my recollections)

Hate to see Gail and Chick left off the list :)

Good Morning Mamba.........HOF blogger extraordinaire!

Good Morning Charles, Good Morning Laker Nation!

Let's just be sure to clamp down on the defensive end, keep the intensity up, and all will be fine.

GO LAKERS, 50 B4 20!

Good Morning everyone! Good Morning Charles, Mamba24, Jon K.!

Charles - I will get in contact with you in the next few days - I have a conference call and a seminar this afternoon, and I have to work pretty much all weekend. Thanks for giving me a way that I can drop a line to you.

Exciting news about Socks getting a dunk in - I'm sure he's chomping at the bit to get back in there and help his teammates. Remember to take those liquid sea minerals, and take things slowly - we want you back for the long term, not just for a game or two.

Let's get ready to make this a successful trip! Let's go lake show!

It was great to see Brylle here yesterday!

The thing about Smush is that he has the talent to be an all-star PG, but he lacks the personality and character to see a smidgen of his potential fulfilled.

It was precisely for that reason (plus his sulking) that he had to leave.

Brylle, was that you who posted that Celestand article? I thought it was fantastic. Reading it brought back some memories. When Kobe was still in high school, I thought the same thing as Celestand (who does this guy think he is)... you could see, he REALLY thought he was MJ incarnated. There was absolutely no doubt that he thought he was not only the bag of chips, but the entire snack food isle.

I was convinced when I watched him in person during a shoot around prior to a game early in his rookie season. Like Celestand's article, when you see him on the court just practicing, you could SEE the determination, the fire, and that left little doubt in my mind. It was that day in shoot around that Kobe became my favorite Laker. He's been my favorite for more than a decade now.

Bynum dunking and shooting could be both good and bad. It's probably good because it means he did not have swelling from the alti G machine. Whether he was supposed to be jumping around on the hardwood is unknown... hopefully Andrew isn't doing anything stupid (like trying to jump ahead of the process). If we hear that he's back in the pool, that won't be so good, but if we hear he's dunking again, it probably means the swelling has been contained and his return is swiftly approaching.

Toad

Thanks man!

I Lost the Game.

TMac is one of my fav players in the league. And I have gotten dissed on our blog for expressing as such in the past.He is starting to get a look about himself, like, yall forogt about me huh, now there are whispers of MVP as far as TMac is concerned. Still, I am impressed with the Rockets. Chris Paul is playing great ball too as is David West and Tyson Chandler. Then Deron Williams and the Jazz, take care of their home court. Despite all that, I still love our team against all of them, especially if we regain the focus we had a few weeks ago. So, while it's going to be tough just as any road game is especially this time of year and all that's at stake, I feel like the Lakers can def take a step in the right direction and contnue to build momentum by putting the clamps down on all these teams that are currently tryna pull rank!

RydeOrDie fool!

charles. my bad for being personal saw ur otherpost to me. honestly dude, you think kobe is like kim kardashian? lolz

Good morning LAL friends........thanks for the roll call Mamba!

Am really looking forward to this weekend with our team. All 4 opponents are playing well and it should be a good indicator of where we are (oh yeah top of the WC). Hopefully, staying there for another week and more.

GO LAKERS!

Good morning Mamba24, Charles & everyone else in the GREAT Laker Nation!

OMG - love the smell of roll call in the morning - lol! (And really glad to see Gail & Chick added - thanks!)

One more day before game-time - how are we going to contain ourselves?!

GO LAKERS!

The BEAN for MVP or NO PEACE - definitely no peace.

Happy Birthday Caron!

Good morning MAMBA!!! Godd morning CREW!

Mamba... keep up the incredible work you do!!

It's time to soldier up boys and girls!!

Tonights going to be tough!

Mamba... i'll give you my prediction as soon as I feel it!!

GO LAKE SHOW!!

blingbling,

That's more like it man. Apology accepted. Just wanted some blog respect for the peeps in here and our team.

I don't know what you mean by "you think kobe is like kim kardashian?"

But I'll tell this much as far as similarities...
Earlier in the season, Andrew Bynum was Ray-Jiing our Kobe. http://tinyurl.com/2azoe4

When we acquired Pau Gasol, Pau was Reggie Bushing Kim. http://tinyurl.com/yot75x

I honestly can't wait for the threesome.

Regards,

I predict Bynum's first game will be . . . at home v. Portland on April 2. That's 9 games for him to get acclimated to the team and get into game shape. The a 9 game win streak and rolling through the playoffs to Championship #15 over the Boston Celtics.

Pig

Damn but that roll call makes my morning smile. Present!

Yeah Brylle, where is our new T'Shirt design? You did a nice one last season with Smush/Kwame/Cookie around, how about this year with possible MVP and Champ?

Brylle is in the Philippines and it's still 3am over there, I'm sure he will design a good one for the blog. Also another design for AK sparring with Cuban at the Dallas locker room. lol! (That will sell more in blog than the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight on Saturday.)

justanothermambafan:"OMG - love the smell of roll call in the morning "
Please, Please I beg of you JAMambaFan, please
don't tell me the smell of Roll Call in the Morning!

KEIFO!:"Tonights going to be tough!"

KEIFOOOOO! Are you refering to the New Orleans game tomorrow or tonight just being a tough night in general?

Good Morning TOAD my friend how are you?

PSYCHED_LAKER_GIRL Keep the faith. I predict
a long and happy ride in first place. But if we should
fall out of it, who gives a d@mn. June and the
Championship is all that counts.

Mr Mamba 24, the best way to start the day.

Bring on the road...

FOUR FOR FOUR bandwagon.

GO Lakers!

Manong Edwin Gueco,

Where are you based out of? The PI also?

Tim-4-Show,

Speaking of Celestand, I wonder if you remember when he put the ball behind his back laid the ball to the hoop like Pistol Maravich move. He got a standing ovation for that shot. I don't know whether somebody put that on the You Tube. A Season later, he was cut off.

I read somewhere Trevor is supposed to shed the walking boot this week sometime, well, hello? Tomorrow is Friday so I wonder how that is looking for him..I guess maybe that is why no more rumblings about Ira Newble, they are maybe wanting to see how Trevor's foot is shaping up..Even still, he has to get his conditioning back to and strength in that foot..

Well, looks like Chris will be back very soon. That will be interesting to see..If he comes back anywhere close to where he once was, perhaps, he can still alter shots and gives up some scoring down low, every bit helps..

It would truly be wonderful if we can get all these guys back healthy and able to contribute..If nothing else, just to see us go full throttle with all our guns...And PJ tryna manage everyone's time to get all the fellas some run..

JESTERGURU:"Damn but that roll call makes my morning smile. Present!"

AND PRAY TELL MY SON JUST HOW DOES A
MORNING SMILE? - Just playing with you JG.
THANKKKKKKS.

CHARLES:"That's more like it man. Apology accepted. Just wanted some blog respect for the peeps in here and our team."

THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! CHARLES THE BLOG ENFORCER! I LOVE IT!

PIG MILLER:"The a 9 game win streak and rolling through the playoffs to Championship #15 over the Boston Celtics."

ALL ABOARD!!!!

Smush is coming to the Clippers?

One more albatross on a ship of fools.

The Bench Mob Rules! I know that people like bag on Luke Walton around here, but the man is like NBA glue, he holds it all together sometimes. Plus, what if Luke is evolving into a smaller version of Big Shot Bob Horry? Not that you'd EVER accuse Rob of taking the regular season off, but the man knew how to coast through 82 and be ready for that shining playoff stage. Let's all hope that Luke is building towards the playoffs, unlike last year when he led the league in 3-point shooting (for a week, with the 'experimental ball') early in the year and then sprained the ankle and hasn't looked the same since.

I like Jordan's tenacity, he wants to be on that court all the time, or at least when the game matters most. But I think were going to start to see the emergence of the Playoff Rotation as far as PT goes down the stretch. Look for the starting five to get late 4th Quarter minutes over the last few games. Fish'll be in there in game-on-the-line situations this year and probably next, too. Like Ron Harper was in 2000-01 and 02-03.

Ronny Turiaf is a joy to have on a team of somewhat dour competitors. He's the mai tai to everyone elses' scotch on the rocks. Boards, D, a few buckets. How are we going to keep him on the bench in a few seasons?

Sasha? well, he's a shooter and it's nice to have your Kobe back-up not living in Kobe's shadow. They even share the floor for stretches, although I think that will happen less when Bynum returns. His Defence is unheralded and tenacious, he can stay in front of little guards. He might be our best defender off the bench.

That's all for now, Go Lakers!

Smells good, Mamba24, smells good.....

Good points except for the Horry and Luke comparison. You're comparing a cold blooded tiger to a physically and mentally fragile pussycat.

GEEEEEEEEEEEZ.... Mamaba24 there is more to the blog than just taking a roll call... Get a life and a new job please!!!

Alright!!!!

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles! Good Morning Blog Crew!

Another GLORIOUS DAY IN LA LA LAND!!!

How about those Spurs, eh? The are "experienced" aren't they? They sure have some "veteran" leadership, huh? A bit slow in the 4th quarter might be an understatement. Seems to be a recent pattern for them. Don't get me wrong, THEY ARE A BIG THREAT, but I'm beginning to wonder if they've got the "umph" to make it happen...they haven't been able to bring it in back-to-back years. Is Tim Duncan a killer? I am not taking them lightly, they are the DEFENDING CHAMPS and all roads go through them, but are they vulnerable? As I've said before, only Pop and PJ have proven they can get a team to PEAK AT PLAYOFF TIME, so I ain't writing them off yet. We'll see.

ALRIGHT YOUNG LAKERS, NO PARTYING ON BOURBON STREET TONIGHT!!! GET IN YOUR ROOMS EARLY AND GET SOME REST!!! COME BACK TO NEW ORLEANS IN THE OFF-SEASON!!!

Damn, another night without a Lakers game? I guess I'll have to hang out with the family. LOL

DIT DA PAU!!!!

SAY IT LOUD AND SAY IT PROUD!!!

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

Mamba24 and Toad,

One Love.

AK/BK,

Please tell me the title "Eastward ho!" and the mention of KK are not accidental. I want to believe you could be my heroes...and what exactly does "hosted by" mean in this case? The Ho-Stess with the Mostest, anyone?
