PROGRAMMING NOTE: Join us for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am, at www.nowlive.com or by clicking the show widget on the side of the page. We're wide open for callers today, so find a quiet place at work and get on the horn!
UPDATE: No show today. Scheduling kerfuffle with HQ. But we'll be back next week! Sorry for the mix up. BK
No real surprise to learn that Pau Gasol won't suit up for tonight's game at Staples against the Bobcats (7:30 pm, FSN), and is doubtful for Friday's game against the Grizzlies. That left ankle of his still isn't ready to go. In his absence, though, the Lakers have been getting big performances from Lamar Odom, who has gone for (rounding the numbers, here) 19/17/4 over the last five games. Surely it must be satisfying for a guy who has been accused in the past of not meeting big moments with big games. Odom, along with Kobe and Fish, had time to consider such issues, as they were held out of practice on Tuesday to heal. 24 mocked the writers present for not noticing that he had a bum wheel (a tweaked ankle, to be exact) during Sunday's loss against the Warriors, though it should be noted that folks on this site caught on to some limpiness during Monday's rematch.
The blog sees all.
A little more on Monday's win from Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, including postgame comments on "The Charge," his evaluation of it, and how the Warriors and Lakers match up in a potential playoff battle.
Jon Barry of ESPN.com has his MVP candidates whittled down to two, and who wins depends on, well, wins.
Down in Miami, Shawn Marion seems unlikely to opt out of his contract... or get the extension he wants from the Heat, though there's still time for either to change.

An open letter to Andrew Kamenetzky.
My name is Generic One. Along with my Laker brethren, I sometimes fight the zombie horde and continue to prevent the extinction of the human race. The work I do compliments many of the other HRLSFF (Humanity's Right to Live Super Freedom Fighters) groups, which, as you guessed it, battle the forces of evil in it's many shapes, forms, and states of mortality. In no small manner do we take our task, just as the other coalitions that focus on different types of monstrosities (such as aliens, lycanthropes, Scientologists, and there's even a group devoted to sea monkeys). We all do our part, in some fashion, to keep these menaces from growing to the point that they could threaten our very existence. While we aren't published often in any newspapers, we do have a growing contingent of unionized labor (still haven't gotten dental), quarterly conventions, "Game Night" at a variety of different venues, and our own wiki page, which I can not release information on at this time. We've been fighting for the survival of the human race for centuries and through a combination of hard work, creativity and professionalism, have garnered ourselves a loyal, intelligent following, many of whom you will find on this very blog.
Because of this, I must commend your decision to take up the fight against Mark Cuban. At first, you may think Mark Cuban has nothing to do with the aforementioned zombies, aliens, lycanthropes, Scientologists, and sea monkeys, but I assure you he does. He does, indeed. You see, what you have stumbled upon, is a creature of incredible intrigue to our group, and the true nature of Mr. Cuban is coming to the surface through your plight, and incidentally, through his direct banning of bloggers from his locker room.
Bloggers have been a great resource to us, we've found in the past, and this circumstance that has arisen has enabled us to observe the curious actions of Mark Cuban in a completely different light. Because of this, I must say your decision to continue attempting to bring to light Mark Cuban's strange behavior. Not simply because it makes any work we'd do that much easier, but because the responses to the blogger outrage provided on his own blog (irony alert!) continues to offer more evidence to research. His locker room is too small to house a few more writers? That's really what he's running with? A premium on elbow room? If things start getting really crowded come playoff time, will he demand that scribes lose a few pounds or find their credential yanked? Perhaps, and this would lead us to believe that he had cannibalistic tendencies, or, as we suspect, if he is indeed not human, a taste for the flesh of men. And women.
(By the way, you've been to his locker room. Not particularly small, by any means, at least you assert. And if he's looking to prove this weak point by linking a photo into his essay, hopefully we'll be able to see if he casts a shadow or has a reflection.)
The explanations he provides in backing his case are equally interesting. For example, for him to imply that someone such as Mark Stein, who works for a major news network, can write a blog, but escape "blogger" classification, is a huge piece of the puzzle. This would lead us to believe that he feels the need to have the spotlight. Vampires are rather vain beasts, as are some alien life forms. While Stein's credibility actually lends to Mr. Cuban's ego, just as you mentioned, Wayne and Garth would not. And then there's this: Bloggers are usually insightful people, and aren't afraid to publish what they truly believe. People such as Wayne and Garth would already be very suspicious of Cuban's true nature, while a media meat head such as Stein would never guess there was something else going on.
Which brings me to my next point. His behavior. Curious, ain't it? He sits courtside for every home game, and attempts to for any road games that he can. While his vanity would certainly lend credibility to his status as a vampire, the bright lights on the court would tend to lead me away from that theory. Reptilian life forms can often be found basking in the sun, because they are cold blooded, as I'm sure you are aware. Also of interest is his ability to screech at extremely high pitches whilst yelling at the refs, his own players, and whatever coach he has leading his team at the time. Banshee, perhaps? Banshees are typically female, but it is possible there is a male version of which we are unaware. There's also his propensity to disappear at the end of games, which would lend belief that he has access to technology unknown to mankind.
To conclude, in making this dubious decision to ban bloggers, Cuban will inevitably end up granting better access to the HRLSFF, so we can continue studying his behavior and eventually make a determination on his true nature. We're currently leaning towards a reptilian alien banshee, but are open to changing this view when more evidence is presented.
I tip my hat to you, Sir. Shine on you crazy diamond, and keep fighting the good fight.
Sincerely,
Generic Cornelius Crabtree One, III

With this crackpot medical team they should just state minimum 8 weeks for all ankle sprains. Does anybody remember what Gasol, Bynum, Mihm, and Ariza look like?
I am pretty sure Ariza is white but it's been so long I can't remember.
It looks like Golden State is so upset at the Fish call that they now want an independent congressional hearing on it. After reviewing a few times I really don't see a conspiracy.
And of course Phoenix thinks they were robbed too in the Detroit game. Something about NBA conspiracy to keep the Lakers in the #1 seed. Also loved Shaq quote that he gaurentees winning the Western Conf Finals and was only brought to Phoenix to body up with the likes of Duncan, Yao and Bynum. Let's just say I liked it that Bynum was on his mind. I really would like to see a healthy Bynum against Shaq in the playoffs and I think it will happen.
Go Lakers, take care of business tonight and may God bless our medical staff it needs it.

The Bobcats game has the makings of "TRAP game" all over it..What, with Gerald Wallace back in the lineup, then you have Raymond Felton and Okafor doing what he does ... Hopefully, the homecourt will have it's advantage as what it is intended and we can make very short work of they ASZ and be done with it....
GO LAKESHOW!

I think you're on to something. I suspect Cuban is a vampire. Here's my evidence so far:
1) He's freakishly pale
2) He's bloodthirsty
3) He sucks
There's probably a lot more, but those are the big three.

I get the sense that there's some sort of movement that's pushing towards Kobe winning the MVP award this year. It reminds me of those times when actors or directors who've received multiple nominations but never won, finally get one not necessarily for that year's achievement but for their entire body of work. The thinking is, this person has performed at a high level for so long, and still hasn't won yet?
It seemed like everyone (coaches and players) got handed cards at the beginning of the year that instructed them to SAY that Kobe is the best player in the league. I'm not inferring that he's not the best player or that his peers don't believe it. What I'm pointing out is that they're all SAYING it over and over in interviews. It's almost like a PR campaign. It's like they're saying Kobe's paid his dues, let's give the old man his MVP - kids like CP and LeBron have plenty of good years ahead of them.

BD, LOL, Shaq can ONLY dream to be on the court matching up against a "healthy" BYNUM....Cuz if it ever DOES come to fruition, he is gonna FOUL himself out the game in the 1st half! A "healthy" Bynum, is a very agile and skillful and dominating BYNUM and Shaq cannot test him.!

Good Morning/Day, Laker Nation!
Am I the only one who is frustrated with the Lakers training staff?
1. Pau Gasol stated that this ankle sprain was similar to the one he received in the pre-season whilst playing for Memphis. Why is is that the Memphis training staff was able to get Pau Gasol back on the court faster than the Lakers training staff?
2. If Chris Mihm's problem was the screw all along, why did it take MONTHS to literally figure this out? I mean, couldn't someone have recognized this in November or December, and we would have had Chris Mihm back on the court TWO MONTHS ago? Why did it take SO long for someone to recognize this or even pose the question?
3. Why is there this consistent problem with reducing swelling amongst injured Lakers? There anti-inflammatory nutrients (such as omega-fatty acids) and liniments (Dit Da Jow!) that specifically do THAT. Are they being used? It sure doesn't seem like it. Is the Lakers training staff just using high school tactics of "hot and cold"? It sure seems like it because they have a consistent issue with resolving swelling associated with injuries.
4. Trevor's Foot. It seemed like it took FOREVER to find out that "Oh, Trevor, you're foot isn't healing properly. Keep that boot on a bit longer." It seems to me that if the present course of therapy isn't leading to "proper healing" that one might want to try another strategy. When I think of my 60 year old martial arts master's foot healing so quickly, and Trevor's foot taking so long to heal, it just intuitively seems that something's not right in terms of the appropriateness of the treatment he is receiving.
Jon's Number One Disappointment of the Seasaon: The length of time it is taking for injured players to return to court.
Jon's Number One Point of Celebration of the Season: The fact that DESPITE all these critical injuries we are still number one in the Western Conference. Just fantastic.
GO LAKERS!

"GENERIC ONE WELCOME BACK BROTHER. D@MMMMMMMN YOU BEEN MISSED!!!"
Good to be back, bro. I've been lurking in the shadows, but a bit too busy to post.
Charles,
"You have been missed!"
Thanks, bro. The elimination of zombies in the Seattle area has been pretty time consuming.
exhelodrvr,
"Just make sure that when he does, it's not a trap!"
Since his chief agent, the Giant German, has gone down, traps should be much easier to avoid. Jason Kidd is a ghoul. Nothing a little holy water can't take care of.
The D,
"I think you're on to something. I suspect Cuban is a vampire."
Perhaps he's half vampire? Kinda like Blade? We've seen him in the daytime before, so that might be the case. Half-vampire reptilian alien banshee. Interesting.
Jon K,
"Mark Cuban is CLEARLY a Reptillian. It's all in the eyes, brother."
I think I've noticed a forked tongue, too, when he gets really angry.
Posted by: generic_one | March 26, 2008 at 10:58 AM
richtown-
my initial, gut response to that was "yes," but not a super confident one and I haven't really thought about it. There are some knocks on the guy for sure, but the bottom line is for a very long time he was one of the league's best players. But injuries limited him, and there wasn't a ton of postseason success.
Of course with hoops, it's the total picture, right, for the HOF? College, etc.? Toss in his Michigan career (TO not withstanding) and he has a better case.

Posted by: Elle | March 26, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Susan Lucci, the All My Children daytime soap opera acrtress comes to mind when it comes to Kobe and the whole MVP thingy. She went like forever being nominated for an Emmy until like her 19th nomination, she finally won but Susan's role was always considered one of the best roles for women on daytime soaps. Not quite Kobe, but eerily similar in terms of him and the MVP....Sort of like, they just finally couldn't DENY not giving it to her...Makes you think it truly is a personal thing when it comes to certain individuals..

Mamba,
What ever happened to the 55 win bandwagon??? I say we set the bar a bit higher and say 60. I know we have maybe two serious games in that stretch so I say we lose one and win one.

How about some props to BK too?
He has been handling everything while A to K has been Cuban smoking.

The D,
"1) He's freakishly pale
2) He's bloodthirsty
3) He sucks
There's probably a lot more, but those are the big three."
Not so sure - the Warriors drove a stake through his heart last spring, and he's still around.

A quick comment on injuries: I think it may not be so much of our medical staff's inadequacy as far as our injured players not coming back quickly as it might be due to the management being conservative in sending them back too soon, esp since we seem to be doing ok without them. If we were in the playoffs right now, we might have seen Gasol and Bynum being rushed back to play a bit more, but right now the thinking is that there's no reason to bring them too early and risk re-injuring them. On the other hand, you can;t expect them to just show up for the playoffs and be ready to go, they need time to adjust. So expect most of them to be back right before or early in the playoffs...

EAST COAST JESSIE:"IWhen that series does start we're going to have to make some type of arrangements to get my Laker crew out here. I'm going to need all the help I can get out here in Boston. dea: We can all strip down and paint the purple & gold on our bodies....ooops never mind, this March madness stuff is getting to me. Can't wait 'till it's over so we can watch some real b-ball."
STOP IT EAST COAST JESSIE! STOP IT NOW! LOL!

"ROLL CALL"
Present -- Mamba 24, I'm afraid that The Force is only 99.991% in balance. hahaha
We need to beat up on the Cats, Grizz, and Wiz without Gasol this week and The Force will be in full harmony with Laker Nation. Go Boston! (Today and Friday only).

"Erica could not go to her left!!"
She could probably go left, but I would really like to see her tea-bag Steve Nash while dunk-ing a basketball during a playoff game.

Frank -- that was just wrong! haha

To you guys out there that blog during the game, how do you do it. I can't handle commercials, I can't even imagine watching a Laker game without my DVR. My stress level would be off the scale if I had to watch the last 2 GS games with commercials. I really don't know how you do it and have you ever read your post after the game?? It's comedy at it's best. Usually by the end of the thread it doesnt matter if they won or lost, everybody has been traded or they all pretty much suck. To say Laker fans are fickle would be a major understatement.
