Kobe takes a stand

Kobe Bryant has joined the ranks of celebrities like Don Cheadle and George Clooney to raise awareness of the atrocities in Darfur. His PSA is currently on the homepage of Aidstillrequired.org.
In an age where athletes are often criticized for not being political enough with potential endorsement dollars at risk (LeBron James is a recent example), it's fantastic to see one of Kobe's stature doing the right thing. I'll try to ask Kobe more about this when I get a chance.

Great post. Even without Kobe's involvement, this is one of those issues everyone should be aware of and working towards finding a solution.
Weird side-bit about LeBron though. Youth, ignorance and money do not a good combination make.

It's great to see Kobe stepping up for an important cause like that.

AK,
I think today's game with Phoenix is proving why Im still worried about them. Shaq seems to still have some gas left in the tank.
Posted by: zen | March 09, 2008 at 02:09 PM
Shaq looks as determined as ever. What a dive into the crowd! Miami has to feel a bit short changed with the effort the's displaying.
He's playing out of his mind and they're only up 6. I'm puller for our former Laker to solidify our #1 posititon in the West!

AK --
One of the things that Kobe has over LaBron with regard to endorsement dollars is perspective. Kobe was all over the place pre Colorado (Nike, McDonald’s etc.) but that whole episode may have changed his perception – for the better. After the sponsors pulled his adds, he hopefully had an opportunity to realize that there are more important things in the world than making your 150th million dollars. He lived without the sponsors and I believe he realized he doesn’t need them. Therefore, he is willing to take more moral and ethical stands. Just a guess.
Are you listening Tiger? MJ?
Laker Nation –
May I suggest a “Boycott TJ Simers, Until he Apologizes to Laker Fans” bandwagon, as oppose to a “Fire TJ Simers” bandwagon? Economic times are tough and I don’t want to see anyone lose a job.

Phx does not worry me. They look like there expending so much energy on defense that they 1-10 from beyond the arc. I want Phx to lose so bad. While shaq is playing Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka..the Spurs are just slowly beating them downm Tye Suns are so tired right now it shows

Shaq does have gas! Lead foot!

Glad I could be of use!
Like I said earlier, watching the youtube of what the AK/BK Bros do for the blog gave me new respect for their jobs.
Also, the coach of Los Suns is making me laugh in earnest, because he looks so funny when upset. He gets so mad, and yet manages to keep at least one hand in his pocket!

as far as Lebron..well...if he doesn't want anything to do with Darfur..so be it..but to say he doesn't know enough to add his John Hancock then that a cop out from our young multi-millionair. Hmmm..could it be about the money he's making...he wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds him I suppose

Spurs just look to old to me...
Suns played a good game but Shaq does not have enough energy for a full game you can mark my words that if the Suns want him to play 37 minutes a game they are in trouble
Posted by: shneurson | March 09, 2008 at 03:06 PM
Took a shower after the game and I still feel dirty from cheering for the Suns. I actually fistpumped after Nash's 3 late in the game.
That said, Go Lakers on Noche Latina.

Well, that was a win-win for the Lakers.
So Los Suns won a game at home against Los Spurs, who los in Denver two nights ago.
This gives Los Suns some false hope. Yes!
Also, Lakers create more separation from Los Spurs, who look more vulnerable than ever after losing two straight.
It's gonna be a good year, Lakers fans.
Another thought on the Darfur situation: Steven Spielberg recently resigned from his post as artistic advisor for the Olympics as protest against China's policies on Darfur. Is there any chance Kobe would follow suit (of course this would mean he could get pinky surgery earlier, too)? Does he know what he's getting into?

Good win for yall..i suppose. Yall mustered every inch of intestinal fortitude for that victory. Unfortunately..ive never been one to complain to much about officiating but geezzz man..can shaq push off for rebound any more obvious than he has been doing with 5 fouls and refs are scared of deflating what little confidence the suns have. Again..great win..unlike most people here I was rooting against you..i take more joy in watching yall fail than succeed..but alas..darn now were 1 full game ahead of the #2 seed instead of a half game (lol) Enjoy BSPN while they find a way to resurrect the confidence in PHX fans across the globe...oppsss..my bad..i mean across the Pheonix planet Orange area..haha!

Great game on NBC!
If the Phoenix Suns are going to play like this the rest of the season and the playoffs, they're to be taken serious.
Being a Laker fan, I would not like to see the Phoenix in the first round unless the Lakers are complete with their roster. As we all know, Gasol is a great player but I don't see him putting a body on Shaq for seven consecutive games and the same goes to Lamar Odom.
Other than that... Phil jackson would recognize the best matchup out there and would take full advantage of it.
Give the Suns credit although it was again a game determined by the refs as everyone even the commentators recognized.

Fire32 -
I applaud your Suns. They played a heck of a game. I have always contended that they could turn it around and even win a playoff series. If you play this hard every night, you certainly will.
That said, I don't see you as contenders, and fear for the future of your franchise with Shaq's contract. I just don't see you playing this well for 4 playoff/finals series in a row, especially in the later rounds where you don't have home court.
But does that make me a hater? I'm or record as being against hate. Oh yeah, I'm also on record as saying I enjoy watching you loose. Oh, well.
We really can't have San Antonio winning road games against playoff teams. They have to loose those games if we want to have any realistic chance at home court advantage. This allows us to not feel pressured to sweep this upcoming road trip (which is, of course, totally unrealistic).
So thank you Suns and thank you Fire32.
Now, we just have to take car of our own business tonight.
Go Lakers!

The only thing worse than what is happening in Darfur is the way that the world is responding to it.
Why is the world hang-wringing, instead of ending A CLEAR CASE OF GENOCIDE?
One word: China. China has petroleum interests in Sudan and supports their government. Thus, China tries to block any aggressive military action necessary to stop these atrocities and the world kowtows down to them because we wouldn't want to upset the flow of crap being manufactured for Wal-Mart.
Where one sees China's political fingerprints in the world as a result of their economic interests (i.e. Central Africa, Sudan, Burma) one will find abuse, governmental corruption, and genocide.
As a supposedly moral country, it sickens me how we look the other way while shouting the virtues of freedom and democracy whenever China's oppressive hand is involved.
This government is directly responsible for genocide in Tibet and Xingyang Province (Uighurs), but it's cool because they provide cheap labor and substandard manufacturing to keep profits high.
When they block any meaningful resolution of horrific genocide and cultural rape in Darfur, the governments of the world wring their hands and politely back away.
It turns my stomach.
It's great that Kobe is bringing up what's happening in Darfur.
But it's a tragedy that most people just don't care, but they sure love the values at Wal-Mart!
GO LAKERS!

Just an update. Gunner, Mike T. and KL are Laker fans. Their history on the blog are more in between rampant issues regarding the Laker Player(s) they fought for on their post's. You should probably remove them from the troll call. You may want to take a survey about Sonny Belfast, but he is here on a casual blogging tip. He most likely will not be considered a troll since his adjustment of his input.

Are you kidding me? LeBron James refuses to stand up for Darfur because of endorsement dollars? How much money does a person need?
Hundreds of thousands of innocent people are being killed AND THEY'RE AFRICAN!
When I last checked LeBron James is an African-American.
That just sickens me.
I mean, how does the guy sleep at night?
Oh yeah, on a bed on money.
Too bad he could do some small thing to possibly help stop institutionalized gang-rape of innocent women in Darfur, but choses not to.
I guess that's too much to ask.
NO MVP? NO PEACE!

Just to let people know, that kanye west album, Graduation, was in my top 3 favorite album from last year. And my favorite song on the album, "Big Brother." Best dedication song I've ever heard in my life.
I like Kanye West and Kobe, because they don't cater to the media. Why cater to such pricks? They know they are the best, and they will let you know.
Posted by: wow | March 09, 2008 at 05:02 PM
I saw the PSA on TV and it shocked me. Everyone has been avoiding the whole Darfur thing like it was the plague. I was so proud. The ad is so gritty and not glamorous or anything like that.
I instantly thought of Tiger when I saw it and how he avoids social commentary.
I then thought of Ali (and it is sort of apropos that he watched the Suns game in person). Ali never shied away from anything, even risking (and loosing) his career and freedom to express his convictions, whether you agree with his position or not.
Kobe just placed himself a cut above today's athletes.

On an NBA note, I hope Shaq does well and that we meet Phoenix in the playoffs with them firing on all cylinders. That way, when we vanquish them, it will excise all the demons of the past three years once and for all!

Yeah, I vaguely remember an anecdote about Michael Jordan, where someone asked him to back some politician
who was a Democrat and Michael replied, "Republicans buy
shoes, too."
I'm sure that's why LeBron won't speak out about Darfur or
anything else controversial. Kobe has always been polarizing,
but LeBron's biggest concern is that he wants to be the first
billionaire athlete, so I'm sure he'd never take any public stand
that might alienate some segment of the population, no matter
how small.

Paul Gasol is the best thing to happen to the lakers since Kobe, the lakers must of offered memphis some magic jelly beans in that trade.... in later news i hate Tony Parker. Somebody stop the Rockets.

Nemaia,
“No Spur outside of Ginobili drove the lane trying to foul Shaq or Amare out. I think if it were Kobe, he would've kept on attacking the basket.”
Another excellent point. Again, my thoughts exactly. Wow, more blog-sync-think.
Your point about Kobe attacking the basket reminded me of an point I wanted to make regarding when it is OK for Kobe to take over the game offensively. Basically, I have no problem with Kobe taking over the game ANY time that he finds that he can attack the basket and get to the rim at will. When Kobe gets into those attack-the-basket zones, which are different from his jump-shooting zones, we either get points from the field or the line or an assist and the other team ends up in foul trouble and over the limit.
The game last Tuesday against the Kings was a perfect example where Kobe went into full attack-the-basket mode and scored 17 points while only taking 1 shot outside of the paint. Kobe totally demoralized the Kings with that run. And unlike taking a fade-away jumper, Kobe Bryant driving to the hoop ignites the offense, forcing double teams and rotations, and giving other Lakers players great lanes to receive passes for easy hoops.
The thing about taking it to the hoop every time is that most players cannot do it, whether we are talking about the playground or the NBA. The amount of energy needed to drive into traffic to attack the rim every time is huge compared to the energy needed to shoot a jumper. That is why you don’t see players go to the hoop continuously. They get tired and settle for jacking up a jumper, just like you and I do on the playground.
Well, that limitation does not apply to Kobe as we all know. He is the one player in the NBA who has the endurance and will to take it to the hoop every single time once he gets into his attack-the-basket mode. We saw it in the 62 against Dallas and the 81 against the Raptors. Kobe gets the ball in the backcourt and just takes off with a single goal, the basket at the other end of the court. That’s the Kobe that every opponent fears. Not the dude the shoots those stop-and-pop jumpers. Take it to the hoop, Kobe!

Big ups to the Big Cactus for his effort today. I'm just wondering how much of that he can sustain heading in to the playoffs. I would never want the Suns or Mavs to not make it to the playoffs. I want to see Mamba romp through these former MVPs in the west. Nash, Shaq, Duncan, Nowitzki...

The Suns and Spurs want so badly to be like the Los Angeles Lakers that they have now added the new word "Los" to the front of their uniforms. Los Suns, Los Spurs......... Well it's not going to work. Hell, look at the Clippers. I still call them the San Diego Clippers. There's only 1 LA team and we all know who that is.

That article attacks Lebron where he lives and breaths. It's true, we can't expect wealthy Americans to pressure wealthy Chinese off the same neo-imperialist practices that the USA has taken part in over the years.
Props to Kobe if he is willing to sacrifice his interests with the Chinese and Nike to raise awareness of human rights violations.
That shows character.

Tiger Woods may not be political, but unlike a lot of athletes he is a philanthropist. Among celebrities, he ranked fifth in 2006 (Oprah was first). He gave 9.5 million dollars. Carmelo Anthony was first among basketball players givein 4.5 million dollars.
Kobe raising awareness of Darfur is fantastic. Maybe someone will ask him about Darfur in China. He could give a very interesting answer is he's so disposed.

I just watched the PSA. When was it filmed? Not recently, Kobe's hair is long. Why are we only seeing it now? I find the big chunk of diamond in his ear ironic.
Kobe can speak up because he has nothing to hold him back. In fact, his Q-factor is so low that this kind of thing actually helps him. Not saying that's why he did it, because we know Kobe's anything but fake even if the world tries to convince us otherwise.

Jon K,
it is the right of anybody to choose the battles they want to fight. if lebron chooses to stay away, who are we to cast the first stone? stop being, in your father's words, "the one out of five".
Posted by: reality bites | March 09, 2008 at 06:31 PM
Ive known about this Lebron story since it came out. Im African, and when this story came out that Lebron could not even sign a petition for this cause just made me distant myself from Lebron. I live in Cleveland and I know the love for Lebron in this city. The one argument Clevelanders would make against Kobe was that Kobe was selfish. In return I would try to point out that Lebron is just as selfish too. Maybe not on the bball court, but when it comes to money, Lebron is a huge capitalist. He only cares about money, and he will try to keep his image as clean as possible not cuz hes humble, rather, because a clean image means big dollars. And Lebron knows that, and that is why he stays away from anything that will harm his $$$$$$$$$$.
Im glad Kobe took a stance on this issue, I hope he can do more stance, because we need a bit time athlete that is not worried about $$$, and endorsement but can take stance in issues. I think if Colorado has not happened, Kobe would not be a better person. Colorado has made Kobe a better person, and it was a blessing in disguise. Kobe might still throw tantrums, but hes matured from that little over arrogant kid from Lower Marion.
Kobe has gone through the maturation journey and he continues to improve.

Reality Bites,
You're the one out of the five, jerk!
Only a coward chooses not to denouce genocide because it is financially inconvenient for them.
Do yo have any idea what is happening in Darfur, or are you too busy shopping at Wal-Mart?

Reality Bites,
We're talking about hundreds of thousands of people being killed, raped and tortured simply because they're African.
Now, if it was 1942 and you knew what Hitler was doing, and you had an opportunity to speak against the Holocaust, maybe even do something small to alleviate the Holocaust, but chose not to so you could make more money in endorsements, would that be morally okay?
Would that be respectfully within a person's right to "choose the battles they fight"?
I guess a person has to choose whether or not they have any moral fiber or not.
Nothing is more clearly wrong (NOTHING) than genocide. It's the nadir of human action. If you can't see that, and are not emotionally affected when genocide is taking place and people with power are doing nothing to stop it, then you have some serious fricken problems.
As obviously LeBron James also has.
GO LAKERS!
