It's all relative, folks

March 7, 2008 |  9:27 am

Injury news out of El Segundo after Thursday's practice wasn't overwhelmingly good.  Chris Mihm looks surprisingly spry after having a big honkin' surgical screw removed from his foot and could return starting in April.  After that, though, the news gets less encouraging.  Andrew Bynum is still in the pool and on the elliptical machine.  No real estimate on when he'll be back, but he's better off than Trevor Ariza, who still can't get out of the walking boot he's been wearing to protect a broken foot.  He could miss the rest of the regular season.  At least Kobe has figured out how to play through his pinkie pain, and (knock on wood) shouldn't have to miss time because of it.

But as they prepare to host the Clippers tonight at Staples (7:30 pm, FSN)- here's where the relative part comes in- the Lakers realize things could be a lot worse.  After an all-too-brief run to respectability, injuries have laid waste to the LAC this year, dropping them back to a familiar place at the bottom of the Pacific (Division, not Ocean). Now the franchise is in some serious limbo, facing an offseason that could be good, could be Armageddon, or just about anything in between.  As center Chris Kaman rather graphically points out here, the Clips haven't beaten anyone good this year, and Phil Jackson is focused on making sure the Lakers don't allow them to buck that trend

Mike Dunleavy might not lay big odds on the upset.  He still believes the Lakers are the best in the league.  In that notebook, too are health notes on Kaman (sat out practice Thursday) and Tim Thomas (questionable for tonight).

More MVP talk, this from former Daily News writer Ross Siler's blog with the Salt Lake Tribune

"There's been an increasing amount of chatter about the LeBron James/Kobe Bryant showdown for MVP this week in the Jazz locker room.

Deron Williams marveled at James' line of 50 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds Wednesday against New York, but the consensus seems to be that Bryant deserves to be MVP by virtue of being older and having led the Lakers to the West's best record.

As someone who voted for Bryant last season, I'm inclined to think the same way. The one thing that gives me pause would be voting for somebody who made as vocal a trade demand as Bryant did last summer, one that threatened to destroy his team.

There's no disputing what Bryant has done this season, but as recently as training camp there were questions about whether he cleaned out his locker in protest. I'm leaning toward James right now, especially given the two games he had against the Jazz."

Siler is as solid and thoughtful a beat writer as there is working in the NBA, so this gives you an idea of the different things voters struggle with and how they arrive at a decision.  Kudos to him for making his though process public and letting people hold him accountable.

John Hollinger calls LeBron the league's best.

Dirk? Not thrilled about the suspension that kept him on the sidelines in Dallas' loss to Houston Thursday night.

An interesting exchange between a writer and an agent

Good Morning!

Good morning!! Time to show our co-tenants who owns Staples!

and someone should tell Siler how badly Lebron behaved DURING the season. Using an offseason incident that actually propelled the lakers as something against kobe is horrible.

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles, Good Morning Laker Nation!

Another win tonight against the Flippers (I can't get away from this team........had season seats for the Braves when they actually had a good team........moved to SoCal and they found a way to follow me)

50 before 20!

WE ARE THE FREAKIN' LAKERS!

GOOD MORNING LAKER FANS!

AK47 is still injured. Dirk needs to recognize the gravity of the foul. Quit crying DN.

The only way to end this debate is:

KOBE VS LEBRON in the 2008 championship. I would love for this to happen this year. Not next year, but this year. Bring on the King James so the Mamba can show him how poisonious his bite really is.

Laker vs Cavs 2008

Morning everybody! We are the Lakers, we are the Lakers, the mighty mighty Lakers, mighty mighty Lakers. Whoo, ahh, we feel, whoo, ahh real good! (little Remember the Titans right there for y'all.)

AK & BK SORRY ABOUT THE LINE OVERRUN
IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN

Good morning Larry mamba24....If you have the time sir do you think you can post the old 60 and 55 win bandwagons, thank you.

Good morning, Lakers family.

It's game day! I'm glad the boys got a day off... but I'm itching for a game. I'd love to see the Lakers lay down a serious whupping on the hapless Clippers. Let Kobe and the starters rest in the fourth. Get Jordan, Sasha, Turiaf, and DJ some playing time.

The Clippers can surprise you sometimes, especially with the way that Maggette seems to end up at the line with the slightest bump. But the Lakers can, and should, beat them easily.

Go Lakers!

Good morning LAL friends: AK/BK, Mamba24 - you the man, Charles, et al.

GO LAKERS!

I might be responding to Gasol - what he doesn't say is that Kobe said at the beginning of the season - back to business, I'm on this team and its the TEAM I am concerned with. Additionally, when they acquired Gasol - Kobe said Buss/Kupchak did their part, now it's up to us. I think he has shown everyone that us is now 13-2 since the Spanish inquisition, oops acquisition.

quite frankly,

i am absolutely sick of the MVP talk. lots of basketball needs to be played. we need to get the number one seed. every time i read articles it just makes me angry to see writers do 180's on their criteria.

i do not want to see kobe win because he's owed one or because he's due. i have a lot to say about this, but like i said.. no more MVP talk til april. we have basketball to play damnit.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? having 2 games back to back calls for an MVP for Lebron? what about the last 2 SEASONS for Kobe? he scored a ton of points.. what lebron is doing for cleveland, kobe has already done for la, and has not won mvp. so it's not right if lebron gets rewarded for being a one man team when kobe didn't. if lebron does, then there is obviously a bias against kobe. it seems to me like people are just looking for a reason NOT to vote kobe for mvp. so they're using what kobe said in the off season as the reason lebron should get it. well, if that was already decided before the season even started, then he shouldn't even be in the talks of mvp. that's some stupid reasoning by that reporter. they wouldn't give it to him the last few years because mvp usually goes to one of the top teams. well, lebron's caves are not a top team, so why should he get it? he put on a show yesterday against the bulls, and they completely lost by the end of the third.

why do the media get to decide on mvp anyways? maybe it should be the coaches instead. i mean, common, the media just want to create more stories and would choose the underdog just so they can stir up some more stories. lame.

An update in the LAT about the Lakers' injuries. Of course, nothing here that AK/BK haven't already found out for us. Those guys -- always a step ahead...

Lakers get mixed injury updates

Bynum coming along slowly, Ariza possibly too slowly.
By Mike Bresnahan, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
March 7, 2008

The Lakers continue to monitor their injured players, receiving positive updates (Chris Mihm), negative ones (Trevor Ariza) and some that are in between (Andrew Bynum).

Bynum is still jogging in a swimming pool and also working out on an elliptical machine, but he has not tested his injured left knee on a treadmill, though that could come next week, a team source said.

The Lakers do not have an updated target date for his return, but Bynum is out until at least early April. He has missed 25 games so far because of a deep bone bruise in the knee and a brief dislocation in the kneecap.

Ariza hoped to get out of a walking boot earlier this week, but the broken bone in his right foot hadn't healed enough, a reality that Coach Phil Jackson called "a disappointment for us."

A key member of the second unit after being acquired from Orlando, Ariza probably will not return before the end of the regular season, four weeks beyond the original forecast for his return. (The Lakers' last game of the regular season is April 15.) He has missed 23 games since sustaining the injury in a Jan. 20 practice.

Backup center Mihm has begun jogging on the court less than three weeks after having a screw removed from his surgically repaired right heel. He hoped to be back in time to play in April, which would be about right for the original six-week timetable.

"There was a tension and a painful pressure in the back of my heel, but it hasn't been there since that screw was removed," Mihm said. "I'm doing stuff already that was driving me up a wall four or six weeks ago."

There's also that other injured guy, the one who keeps playing.

Kobe Bryant hasn't missed any games because of a torn ligament in his right pinkie, but that doesn't stop him from calling it the "most aggravating" injury he has ever had.

He is constantly reminded of it, whether the pinkie gets smacked in a game or caught while buttoning a shirt at home. "Every day," he said. "But you get used to it. When it's painful, you just know that it can't get any worse. It's just pain and it'll go away after a minute or so."

Bryant has been on a tear lately, averaging 39.7 points and shooting a respectable 48.1% in his last three games. He also has developed a strategy when his finger gets hit during games. "I'll keep my hand out of a play or two and I'll kind of move my fingers around, try to just kind of wait for the pain to subside a little bit," he said.

Oh yeah, the Clippers.

The Lakers have had other things on their minds -- namely the top teams in the Western Conference -- but they could achieve a small feat tonight in a designated home game against their friends down the hallway at Staples Center.

The Lakers were 31-5 against the Clippers from 1995 to 2004, but managed to only tie the season series the last three seasons. With a 2-0 edge in 2007-08, the Lakers could make the season series theirs tonight, even though they seem more concerned about the bigger picture.

"I'm even surprised you asked that question," forward Lamar Odom said. "We're trying to fight to stay on top of the Western Conference. The 'Battle of L.A.' will come second to that. We're trying to play for a playoff position, and position ourselves for home-court advantage."

The Clippers (20-39) have endured an entire season without Elton Brand and Shaun Livingston. Their record has suffered, as have any playoff hopes.

"We had the injury bug last year. This year, it seems to be on their shoulders," Jackson said.

I was just re-annoyed by the Simers article because it is STILL near the top of the sports section on latimes.com.

What the h#!! is an article about celebrity popularity doing in the sports section? If I wanted to know about spokesman cuddliness, I'd read People. Or the Journal, if I wanted to pretend it was business news instead of trifling gossip. I don't find entire articles on Angelina's PER in the Calendar section, do I? I'm sure Forbes is just itching for a cover story on Sergei Brin's killer crossover.

Simers, what you are starts with the letter "D" and rhymes with Smush.

Morning everybody. Have a great day and a better night!

Mamba24:

Much thanks, man! you da bomb! Didn't even have to ask!

Mamba24,

Thanks for adding me to the roll call!

To honor Ronny's suggestion, I think you should start a Kobe for President bandwagon.

What do you think?

Good morning Charles!! (chest bump)
Good morning MAMBA24!! (fist pound)
Good morning Laker Nation!!

Another GLORIOUS DAY here in LA LA LAND!!!

This MVP thing is getting a little silly people. I wish writers would just trust their eyes.

Mr. Siler may be a thoughtful writer, but I ask him:

1. How many losses resulted from off-season strife? 0

2. Has Mr. Siler ever fought with his family before? Yes

3. Who is the assassin between the two, the one you absolutely would not want mad at you during the playoffs? KB24

WE ALL KNOW WHO IS MOST VALUABLE IN THIS LEAGUE.

SAY IT LOUD AND SAY IT PROUD!! SCREAM IT FROM THE MOUNTAINTOP!!!

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

Mamba24,

You are the man and very busy with requests, but I humbly ask that you change my name in the roll call to remove the "L" and make it DREWPAUKOBE. You are a gentleman and a scholar and I your humble servant.

Peace to you.

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

Oh the Mamba!

AK/BK: "At least Kobe has figured out how to play through his pinkie pain, and (knock on wood) shouldn't have to miss time because of it."

With all the pinkie pain, I don't think knocking on wood is such a good idea...

TOAD:"Much thanks, man! you da bomb! Didn't even have to ask!"

Toad the only thing you should have had to ask for
is my resignation for not including you sooner. Sorry
I'm slowly getting back up to speed. LOL!

LakerTom, Benjamin,

Was it a cheap shot at Chris Mihm? Maybe so..I am a supporter of Chris Mihm. I just didn't like the fact that he said all summer how great he was feeling and then when he signed his contract he's in pain. They had to remove the screw that was giving him problems. You mean to tell me that didn't plague him during the summer? Maybe he didn't work as hard during the summer as they did once training camp started and once he did training camp it showed he wasn't fully healed. I don't know..It just looks bad that he was smiling for the camera all the time and saying how great he felt until his contract was signed.

Do you realize we have paid for Chris Mihm to sit for 3 years already?

Maybe he was working too hard and he aggravated it.. I don't know.. It just looks bad that practicly the day he signed his contract, he was in pain again.

that reporter just contradicted himself in the entire argument that he made.

1. if kobe had "threaten to destroy" the team in the summer, that gives him the ability to "destroy" a team, which is essentially the definition of MVP. if kobe left, that would "destroy" the team wouldn't it? so he being there makes them awfully better.

2. he says that people say that kobe should get it because he is "older and led his team to the best in the west." UM, i think that's a pretty good reason right there. would you rather give it to someone on the 4th or 5th best team in the krappy eastern conference??

3. what do you mean "as recently as training camp" ?? training camp was 5 months ago sir. not very recent at all. if you want to make things recent, then i'd say 81 points deserves an mvp award. i'd say carrying a modest team into the playoffs 2 years in a row deserves an MVP.

4. didn't lebron say something to make management get basically an entirely new team just a few weeks ago? he definitly said something. doesn't that say something about HIS attitude? hm?

5. so lebron's 2 games against the jazz makes him served for an MVP. Let me just run through a few games kobe worked his magic to get us the W. let's take the game against the maves. did you see the 4th quarter? did you watch overtime? kobe practically made every shot, and his teammates did the work on defense. smells like MVP to me. what about the first game pau had with the lakers. pau scored 20+ and got 10+ boards. who kept feeding him? kobe bryant. how about the series against this suns this season, including shaq? kobe was fantastic. you're rewarding lebron for his performance in 2 games. doing that just makes kobe's game commonplace and an expectation from him. well, then, if that's the cse, then kobe is BETTER THAN MVP. he's MIP. most invaluable player. he is better than mvp.

6. no i'm sorry BK/AK, i don't think writers struggle with deciding who to vote for, i think they struggle with coming up with the reasons why they are voting they way they are voting. let's face it, the media just doesn't like kobe because kobe makes them feel stupid for asking dumb questions, which they do. during interviews, kobe is a lot less personable simply because he's keeping it professional. he doesn't joke around with the reporters because he has other people ot do that with. do you see him being all stoic with his teammates or during games? i think not.

7. as someone who was always a shaq fan and not a kobe fan, even i think kobe deserves the mvp. he is the best player, the most valuable to a team. the lakers honored his request to be traded in the summer, but couldn't find any player, let alone a set of players that is equal value to him. he is invaluable. he is the most invaluable player. if you want to say the mvp should go to a player who makes his teammates better, well, he's done that too. look at shasha vujacic. look at jordan farmar. look at andrew bynum. look at lamar odom. look at pau gasol. look at derek fisher. who is drawing the double team to free up fisher? kobe. who is making the lob passes to andrew? kobe. who penetrates and kicks it out to the machine? kobe. who called his team's bench the best bench in the league? kobe.

8. also, phil jackson himself made it known to reporters that he thought kobe should get it this year. doesn't THIS tell you anything? when has phil jackson ever said one of his players should get mvp? you reporters already know phil jackson wouldn't say anything without an immense amount of thought and reasoning. he's the zen master for goodness sake. the fact that he thinks kobe, a guy he called out on in his book a few years ago, deserves the mvp, i think he should get it.

i just named around 10 good reasons within this post as to why kobe should be named mvp. if the media won't give it to him, well, then, his presence will just be greater and he'll just be known as a guy who was beyond the mvp award.

I am to the point where i say just give it to lebron! We all know that is what just bout everyone wants...if i remember correctly this is a lebron world, we are all just living in it.

So screw it give Kobe more motivation and we win championship and he can look at the media and say screw you (not AK/BK of course lol)

AK BK One of you MoFos

"Siler is as solid and thoughtful a beat writer as there is working in the NBA, so this gives you an idea of the different things voters struggle with and how they arrive at a decision. Kudos to him for making his though process public and letting people hold him accountable".

Solid and thoughtful? Did you guys read his twisted logic?

The only thing Siler's column suggest is that the MVP voting process is in the hands of emotional idiots and should be given to another body to decide the MVP's fate.

Let me prove my point:

First Siler suggest "There's no disputing what Bryant has done this season, but as recently as training camp there were questions about whether he cleaned out his locker in protest. I'm leaning toward James right now, especially given the two games he had against the Jazz."

This isn't a logical "reason" to vote for James but rather an emotional "excuse" to not vote for Kobe.

Do you guys think it is "solid and thoughtful" that this Siler guy would rob Kobe of his MVP vote based ON THE RUMOR THAT HE CLEANED OUT HIS LOCKER!!?

A Rumor started again by Phil Jackson and one Kobe quickly clarified as ridiculous?

Do you guys think it is solid and thoughtful to rob Kobe of his vote because he "perceives" Bryant trade demands as an attempt to destroy the team juxtaposed to a leader with the balls to call the front office, the coaches, and the players to raise the bar excellence and compete for a championship?

This type of thinking is absolutely ridiculous and it spawns from a mind that doesn't have a consistent criteria of an MVP based on the numbers. The criteria keeps changing and reflects the mindless ravings of a writer that has lossed any sense of reality based on the numbers.

Based on the criteria that was set with the voting for Steve Nash's MVP (2-time) it was the best player on the best team with a 50 win criteria........although Kobes 06' season statistically dwarfs LeBron's stats this year (and Kobe came in third or fourth).......Siler wants to vote for LeBron? .........and that is thoughtful and solid?

Bloggers: is it me? it's them right?

It is really sad with this 24/7 media more and more writers have become drunk and corrupted with "the power of the pen" over those who can't or will not think for themselves............writers sadly like this Siler guy try to create the news instead of reporting the facts...........and are in the process rewarded for the Dumbing down of America

Unfortunately this thought process has also spread into the offices of Nike because there is not one national commercial featuring Kobe.........but that is another story altogether.

It's a no brainer.........Kobe is the MVP

My messge to Kobe: I am glad you are the Lakers MVP. Admist this bullcrap MVP chatter, you simply play. Your inate ability to focus through drama and what have you, ceases to amaze me. So much that it is allowing the players around you to feed off your positivety, you can see this through their individual play. Your fingerprints are all over this Laker team, the confidence, the swagger, the belief, is there. I believe this to be more of a reason why you should be named league MVP by the AP and sportswriters or whoever the hell gets a vote. Since you made the conscious decisioon b4 the season to Phil that you were "here and ready to go forward". Right then and there, that other ISH shoulda been DEADED but these ignorant people want to keep harping on it and perpetuating all the negative ISH that used to hover over our team in the past and then linger. But here you are, the tail end of the season, and you have been 1000% there, never wavering, simply playing, motivating, encouraging, pushing forward, never settling, striving for better. You didn't quit on the team . Currently, the Lakers sit atop the west a 1/2 game or game or whatever it is behind the Spurs, in prime position to do something special, something magical. You have everyone believing again, not that we ever stopped. So continue to do what you've done all year. Good things come to those who wait, and patience is a virtue through everything in life we go through. Victory shall be ours. I strongly believe that.

Lakers NBA Champions 2007-2008!
MVP is nice and all but a Champion is way better any day.

I am getting close to done with the KB24 v. LBJ MVP stuff too but does anyone know the $$$ kickers they each have in their contracts if they get it? It's all about the benjamins.

KB24 = MVP
LAKERS = 14 strong, 15 banners....

And for all of us down on the FUNS. Look at the headline on espn.com NBA page = "the big letdown". LOVE IT!

GO LAKERS!!!

Bonez, I feel you on that. Just change the dayum rules which they do all the time any way and give it to BronBron now so everyone can move on to something way more significant..Like a Laker Championship possibility!

Mamba24,

You added Judge and Jury besides being enforcer, you are really a funny man that lighten up our day.

DK,

Thanks for the detailed aricle with regards to the injuries. It would be a nice talking points or uplifting also our hopes if we are updated on Bynum and Ariza who are important components on this Championship bound team. I'm sure Kobe's pinky and Pau's back are silently wishing that the healing comes out sooner. Of course, the medical staff are not as accurate as our weather forecaster in predicting the estimated time of the healing process, it still depend on the person's susceptability to medical care.

In absence of Bynum and Ariza, I wish they could develop MBenga and Ronnie Turiaf as low post defense and rebounds. Watching the College hoops, UCLA game against Stanford, Coach Howland used all his muscles centers from Kevin Love to Mata-Real to Aboya in stopping the Lopez Brothers and spread out their fouls. It would be great if MBenga can replace Bynum in post defense.

PFUNK36:"AK BK One of you MoFos"

i wish kobe would not get the mvp because this will get him fired up in the playoffs to prove his value.

and i hope there would be a lakers/cavs showdown in the final so that kobe could get the finals mvp from lebron james.

Mamba24 - no resigning allowed! We need you to keep the force in motion on this blog.
Also - I think I got bumped off the "55 win" bandwagon - can I get put back on? I should also be on the "60 win" bandwagon, because that's just how I roll!

Isn't everyone kind of tired of the Kobe vs BronBron thing? Let BronBron be the MVP - Kobe will ALWAYS be the MIP - Most Invaluable Player (as Sigh posted above). Plus - as we all know - Kobe is only concerned about winning a championship. He stated it in training camp, and now he's playing with 9 fingers to do it. No one really believes it's all about the MVP trophy - do they?

GO LAKERS!

The BEAN for MVP or NO PEACE!

Mamba,

Please add me to the Fire TJ bandwagon but keep me off the 55 win bandwagon (I'm a jinx!). TJ has exchanged some wonderfully rude e-mails with my father and me, and if you think he's a jerk in print, he takes it to another level off the page. We got him off the radio, now we need to trade him to the local Duluth, MN newspaper for some melted snow.

How much did we pay for Luke for how log?

Mamba24 - by the way - I'll be on the "Kobe for President" bandwagon, and holding the liquid sea minerals until Jon K comes back & takes his rightful place! LOL!

EDWIN GUECO:"You added Judge and Jury besides being enforcer,

I'll Anything to Keep the Blog force in Balance Edwin!

Pfunk36,

"that this Siler guy would rob Kobe of his MVP vote based ON THE RUMOR THAT HE CLEANED OUT HIS LOCKER!!?"

Let's put across to this Siler guy that Kobe cleaned his locker because it is dirty. It needs WD 40 to remove those cricketts' sounds and applied also, ARMOUR ALL so it's now shiny, no longer rusts from those scrubby substance. Kobe could now see Pau, Lo, Sasha from afar.

If anyone would like to email Ross Siler, this is his email. Please be respectful, not only is Siler an excellent writer and very knowledgeable about the NBA, he has always responded to my emails in the past and his answers have always been informative. He also seems like a real nice guy.

I do think he's got it wrong this time though as I've already told him in an email.
