Hallway pass revoked

March 8, 2008 | 10:38 am

Ronny_turiaf_slams_against_the_clip Whatever remnants of whatever rivalry the Lakers and Clippers might have had a couple years back have officially evaporated, evidenced by the current standings in the Pacific Division and reinforced by the overwhelming 119-82 beatdown LAL laid on LAC Friday night at Staples.  With the win, the Lakers clinched a win in the Hallway Series (a departure from recent history, a return to historic history), but more importantly moved a half game ahead of the Spurs for the top spot in the Western Conference after San Antonio lost in Denver.  The Lakers, who had been sluggish from the perimeter over the last few games, blew up in the second half, turning an eight point lead into a blowout behind a 12-17 from beyond the arc.  The margin was enough to get all the starters on ice- or more specifically, to get ice on the starters- down the stretch as they hit the bench for some always valuable rest.  And if contests like last night's are causing you to feel sorry for the Clipper Nation, fear not.  It's still possible for the season to feature a little frivolity, assuming people are willing to think outside the box.

With the game in the bag, thoughts of the future- specifically Andrew Bynum- got some attention.  It's looking more like the his return won't happen until closer to the end of the regular season, and when he's ready the Lakers will be very careful with him.  Whether he'll start once back in shape or come off the bench is also in question, and probably has a lot to do with exactly when he's ready to go, and how fit he is when it happens.  The two seven footers will have to learn to play together, a tougher prospect in the playoffs where the stakes are higher.

The Lakers went to bed as the number one team in the W.C., and if ease of schedule means anything are likely to stay there.  Home heavy with a lot of cupcakes.  Obviously there are no guarantees, but the opportunity is certainly there.  It's the kind of thing that has folks visualizing a Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals... something that would make David Stern a very happy camper (even if he won't say it out loud.)

Kobe and PJ aren't the only members of the Lakers family in contention for some hardware this year.  GM Mitch Kupchak might need to make space on the mantle for an Exec of the Year trophy.  Or plaque.  Is it a ribbon?  Whatever it is, Mitch could get it.

Denver beat the Spurs Friday night, and if they make the playoffs could very well be a team the Lakers face in the first round.  Should anyone worry about that?  Speaking of potential opponents, Mike D'Antoni insists his Suns are better now than before they picked up Shaq.  Not that he can say anything else.

Lakers Blog can vouch for the veracity of this feature:  Adonal Foyle is not your typical NBA player.

Nene is progressing well in his return from cancer.

Should we just toss OJ Mayo in with the older guys for Senior Day at USC? After all, he's likely as gone as they are.

Buenos dias nacion Laker!!!

Ahhh, back in #1 seed.
Great 3rd quarter for us and I am glad to have Vlad back.
Great to see Coby and DJ out there (my prediction came true!) Dacos!!

Have a great weekend all!

Back on top and we won't stop!

I would prefer Bynum to come off the bench for the rest of the year!

How about you guys????

I really want Drew to take as long as possible to recover (as you've heard me say on many an occasion). But, DANG!, the West is tough. How do you win 17 games in a row and not be on the top? How do you win 13 games in a row and have a good home record and not make the playoffs?

The fact that we've gotta face so many West teams up to three times each still in the home stretch makes me a little afraid.

But I gotta stick with my guns and recommend that Drew be as healed as possible before he steps onto the court. No relapses, no re-injuries, and no timidity.

Yet, he and Pau do need time together to gel.

Dang.

Good Morning Charles---Good Morning Laker Nation....

Just the type of game I was looking for---Mbenga and Coby adding some tastey icing on the cake---

Just looking at Mbenga's play it seems that he should play more which would mean being able to do what I have long advocted--playing Ronny more and playing him along side of Pau--let Mbenga be Pau's relief.....

More playing time for Ronny would mean moving Lamar to the 3 sometimes and less playing time for Puke (hooray!!)

A front line of Pau, Ronny and Lamar brings a lot to the table....

Rad played really well and just his presence and shooting makes the offense work that much better...it was good to see him hit some shots and open up the offense---same with Sasha--when those guys are hitting their shots (along with Fisher, who had a great game, and Farmar) we are vitually impossible to beat.....

If Rad ever gets close to his level of play from his Seattle days we might be the best team in the west...oh wait a minute....we already are yee fricken haw!!

Positives for Puke: well he did hit a few shots.....but overall he is reverting back to his sub par play---come on Puke practice shooting about 6 hours a day!!!

Does he (and Lamar) ever practice free throws---he never seems to make both, and Lamar only rarely makes both---come on practice the easiest and most consistent (as well as uncontested) shot in the game.....

Championship teams almost always shoot free throws at an efficeint level....

K -Bros---any news on the 15th roster spot? Also is Kareem indeed working with Mbenga and or Pau?

YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN!

GO LAKERS!!!

just in:

"LBJ will take the scoring title out of reach for the rest by the time he will finish his career"

Cleveland Cav. commentators, today, March 8, 2008.

they first have to petition that from Kareem!

“Whatever remnants of whatever rivalry the Lakers and Clippers might have had a couple years back have officially evaporated”

Unfortunately for Titanic Nation, the so called “rivalry” was dreamt-up by writers like TJ Simers and JA Adande, who were desperate to get people in this city to read their columns. Titanic Nation bought into it, and flooded talk radio and the blogs with their delusions of grandeur. Once out of their miserable existence they managed to be two games better than the Lakers -- Once -- If that’s a rivalry, then I’ve had a rivalry with Vegas for years, when I won my one and only slot jackpot.

Look for the Spurs to pick and roll the Suns into oblivion tomorrow. The Suns are giving up 126 points per game. The Spurs will destroy them. By the end of the day the Lakers will have a 5 game lead in the pacific. Unbelievable. D’Antoni may not survive the season folks.

My concern is Bynum’s injury. I’m hopping the Lakers are just being extra careful with the timeline. I was disappointed to read PJ say he’ll be out the rest of the regular season. They will need him 100% to beat the Spurs. I think the Lakers know that.

One of the cool things about this blog and Laker Nation in general is the Laker Legacy and the different levels and age of Laker fans.

There are old time fans that have been fans sinse the 60's (like me) ---maybe even some fans of the Minn. Lakers (?)--and then there are the fans that went through the up and downs of the 70's (post West /pre Kareem--still cool, some good teams etc.)--then, of course, there is the 80's fans with Magic/Kareem/Worthy etc--the post Magic, pre Shaq/Kobe (still a lot of fun), then the Shaq and Kobe era--and finally the present.

While I do revel in the past of this franchise and can vividly remember those 7 game losses to the Celtics (and Knicjs in '70), (which was the start of the deep hatred I have for the Celtics (the 80's only fueld the hatred fire, even though we were the better team throughout the 80's---and actually we were often the better team than the Celtics (and Knicks) in the 60's as well, the lucky SOB's).....I do, however, live in the present and am definitly reveling in this present exciting team.

I do think this team, especially when we have all our players back and healthy, can compare to any of our past teams...

I hope all fans, regardless of length of service to Laker Nation, do find the time to review all those past teams and glories.

There is an excellent team history on the Official Laker web site, and there are probably a multitude of others.

There is a good (but not excellent) DVD history of the Lakers, that every Laker fan should indeed own---if you don't own it---get it now!!

The Laker Franchise has again and again over the years proved more than worthy (no pun intended) to have the devoted fan base they possess....even when surrounded by Laker haters I am proud to be a Laker fan

And the future looks just as bright as the past.....

And Laker Nation keeps growing--my wife and four kids are also devot Laker fans... and so it grows.....

YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND ERA) TO BE A LAKER FAN!

GO LAKERS!!!

.

So if Bynum comes off the bench for the remainder of the season/playoffs, does that mean we might see a return of Ronny to the starting lineup?

Sounds familiar:

"Livingston, who has not played this season because of a dislocated kneecap and three torn knee ligaments, will scale back his on-court activities for four weeks."

We may have really dodged a bullet on the Bynum injury.

Does anyone know--could a knee brace have prevented Bynum's injury and will he be wearing one when he returns?

Wes

Bummer about Drew. I have faith that, though not as smooth as weaving Gasol into the team flow, Drew's return will be an instant gain - at whatever level he plays - for the LAKERS.

I would still like to know if 11 players scoring above six points is a record of sorts for us. Just for fun and evidence of our depth.

I also agree that giving Mbenga more minutes could not hurt. But what about putting Coby Karl in for Luke? That couldn't hurt too much either. He nailed those threes.

Ah, the joy in Mudville, today. As fans we can be thrilled that the Lakers have yet another notch in their belt. As tight as the Western Conference is, the "W" was a necessity.

As far as the players go, they should look at the victory over the Clippers as a "freebee." They were barely challenged by a lifeless opponent.

What the players should focus on is that they stepped onto the floor at the start with an aura of complacency instead of urgency. That won't get it done playing a worthy competitor. That 8 point lead at the half should have been triple that if the Lakers were on their game.

The Kings will come into Staples on Sunday carrying a grudge, since we took it to them in "their house." Coach Theus is not likely to make the same mistakes twice.

You don't become an NBA Champion by reading your press clippings. Luke Walton should spend more time practicing his shots and less time preening for the FSN cameras that follow him around.

Friday night, Ronny Turiaf seemed to be the only one who came out to play with a chip on his shoulder. As poorly as the Clippers were shooting, their scoring percentage should have been in the 20's and not the 30's.

As a fan, I'm hungry for a parade. I'm chomping at the bit to see a Championship banner hanging at Staples that hasn't faded over time. To be a Champion one must play like a Champion. I only saw that for about 12 minutes on Friday night. Mediocre play only begets bad habits. From here on in, Championship attitude is the only thing that will get it done. Go Lakers!

did anyone find it strange why he (coach Pop) sat his starters when they were only down 13 with better than 5min left to play? After watchin the Spurs last night I'm not very impressed. They started playing very dirty when they couldn't win..and Mr. (ill pump fake but if you don't fall for it..then ill just jump into to you) Manu looked mediocre at best..and the bad part about it is Denver isn't known for there defense. What I saw last night was a team playing dirty and thinkin that there defensive clout will allow them to play dirty thinkin the ref will see it as pressure defense. Oh and Coach Pop..watch the company you keep! Hehehehe!

Did anyone get that joke?

The NBA..were College phone calls gets you a NBA coaching recomendation happens

Lakers vs Suns, first round!!

The Suns may not be a Ferrari before but they sure look like a Diesel-powered John Deere today. Let us hope that the Suns make the playoff - in the 8th seed. And if the Lakers clinch the #1 seed, it will be the Lakers vs the Suns first round rematch again, which I think will be a delight for Kobe, the Lakers and the Lakers fans. It will be a battle of the Division champ, Shaq or Kobe. It will be sweet!

Watching Luke Walton's game reminds me why the Lakers was in trouble in the last 2 years. He is the last holdover from the dark tunnel of the Lakers' ghost - literally, because every ones except him have improved. When he shot the ball, did his trademarked 360s-spin-and-lose-the-ball act, a few Angelenos and myself just had a heart-attack. So folks, for my health and a few Angelenos, please don't encourage him to do anything on the court. Just let him play the hot potato game, something that doesn't damage the possessions.

For those that think Luke has improved somewhat, I hate to use this much-used term, Fool's Gold. If our opponents want to double-team Kobe and front Pau, they will have to leave someone open. That will be Luke - let the Luke-Walton-kind-of-the-world to beat them. This was exactly what happened in the last few games (Portland, Sac). That was why Luke could score a few points. So, in the next few games, late in the possessions, if the ball is still in Luke's hand, you know it is due to Luke's fault not his productivity because he fails to pass the ball to the interior or the cutters, to Pau, to Kobe, to the other high-percentage scorers. If Luke has to create the shoots late at the clock, whether he makes it or not is irrelevant (a 2 pts will just enbold him to take a few more bad shots), this is not the game that Lakers should be playing. I believe Phil finally got it. Sometimes, we just don't have enough choices but to use him.

So, let's all pretend that Luke is the smartest Einstein in the league (wink, wink). So, along with his great PR machine, we may be able to convince some GM's like Steve Kerr to take him off our hand. We are just one player short of having a dream team.

HmrHed,
"Look for the Spurs to pick and roll the Suns into oblivion tomorrow."

LOL..I like that.

AK & BK and readers of this blog,

I blog about the Lakers in extensive fashion about once a month on my myspace(it actually has format and substance) because I can't handle just reading about them anymore, I have too many opinions to contain myself. I can understand AK & BK being too busy to check it out, but if you guys read this blog then you'll definitely enjoy mine, as I frequent Lakers blog every day.

My latest one just mocked Bill Simmons, so that should be worthy enough.

Anyway the team is looiking great and all my real laker fans can feel me.. you smell something? i smell something, a championship!!!!!!!!!!

AK,

That SportsHub Clipper article was freaking amazing - my favorites were the Dickau Dunk Contest and the Real World: Staples bit.

However, I have to point out the completely SHAMELESS self-promotion, linking to your own article. Is that even allowed?

can you say beatdown?

Ouch.

Go Lakers!

Alright Laker Nation!!!

Good on ya Charles and Mamba24!!!

That was a fun one last night, eh?

As Austin Powers would say:

"NICE TO SEE OUR SHOOTERS GET THEIR MOJO BACK, BABY, YEAHHHHHH!"

Now, let's hope that's the end of the shooting slump for our collective backcourt (MVP excluded).

Some questions I never thought I would be asking
--------------------------------------------------------------

I cannot even imagine typing this last season:

"Does a healthy Vlad Rad make a big difference in our offensive and defensive efficiency?"

Makes my head ache just to write that.

Here's another...

"Could Coby Karl be an effective rotation player next season?"

It hurts, make it stop.

And a final one to really make you wonder...

"With Bynum's return uncertain, are Chris Mihm and DJ Mbenga the keys to a Laker Championship run?"

I think my head just exploded.

Not much else to say about last night's game except one thought did occur to me:

"Is Mike Dunleavy trying to shove it in Donald Sterling's face tonight?"

Ahhh. Now I feel better.

SAY IT LOUD AND SAY IT PROUD!!!

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

I guess such blasphemy is allowed by out dear moderators. We need Andrew to beat the spurs. What season have you been watching! in case all of you worriers having noticed. We have the best record in the west. As far as i"m concerned, we have the best stat of all going for us right now. Wins and Losses. We can beat anybody, Period!

SB Pimp,

"That SportsHub Clipper article was freaking amazing - my favorites were the Dickau Dunk Contest and the Real World: Staples bit. However, I have to point out the completely SHAMELESS self-promotion, linking to your own article. Is that even allowed?"

Not only is it allowed, it's heavily encouraged. haha

Seriously, though, we're starting this bad boy from the ground up. A mom and pop shop needs all the help it can get. haha

AK

Food for thought:

How will the Lakers match up with New Orleans with Bynum out, and Gasol in?

I thought that a large part of the Lakers' success against New Orleans was due to Bynum's neutralization of Tyson Chandler's rebounding, and scoring off of Chris Paul alley-oops.

Will Pau be half as effective in keeping Tyson Chandler from running roughshod as he does against other teams? I hope so.

I agree. A healthy Bynum is only crucial for the later rounds. Let him take his time. He'll be great in limited minutes off the bench if he's really healthy.

I really don't see him and Gasol's "meshing" being any more of an issue than Gasol's "meshing" with the team in the first place. That went relatively smoothly. I mean, how hard is it to throw a lob to a freakishly soft-handed 7 foot behemoth? Basketball is not fundamentally all that difficult.

Now, will we be as good as we were going to be if we'd played together for a year or two and were completely comfortable with the intricacies of the triangle? No, of course not. But if a team doesn't play great, disciplined, physical defense and rebound really well, they're not going to beat us anyway, especially with home court.

Go Lakers!

Drew should definitely come off the bench for the remainder of the season. He'll be great off the bench and we won't have to drastically change our lineup at the most important point of the season.

"Can we Please cut out all this talk about the laker NATION?!?!? It sounds very bostonish, it's annoying, and it definetely makes you sound like a bandwagon/fairweather fan."

No. We can't. Was that a simple enough answer for you? As a card-holding member of the Laker Nation, I question your validity as an upstanding fan of the Purple and Gold, and furthermore, sir, suggest that you hold allegiance to the Zombie Horde.

Be wary, fellow Laker fans. We may have a member of the undead in our midst.

laker4lizzife,

That sounds arrogant and unjustified. 15-2 -- OK -- how many top dogs in the west did we beat? The Mavs and Suns look terrible.

Do you think the team with Gasol alone would fair better than the team with Bynum alone against the Spurs?

We are talking about the champs in the playoffs -- not the Clippers or the Kings-- we need every weapon.

And yes I have been on record several times saying that the Spurs are not beatable without Bynum -- I stand by my comment.

Shaq has experience with Duncan...lets hope for an upset!

I love this quote............ "We're here to win a championship," he said. "We're not here to develop players." ..........hows that working out for you?....ha..ha..ha ....

Time is running out for Suns

You can slice, dice and dissect this trade all you want, but even after the Bass-o-matic treatment, the conclusion is the same: The Suns led the West when they traded Shawn Marion for Shaquille O'Neal a month ago. Now they sit in sixth place.

How long can you work out the kinks before acknowledging that they're not going away? If Friday's 126-118 loss to Utah at US Airways Center was a playoff preview, it's going to be a short postseason.

"We just didn't get any breaks, and we don't quite have the swagger to close yet, but I think we're on the right track," Suns guard Steve Nash said.

The Suns were better. But this dangerous fine line they're walking, trying to restructure their team while trying to stay in the playoff hunt, is getting dicey.

You can bet that fans will start barking about the Suns' bench again.

The Jazz went 10-deep, even without injured starter Andrei Kirilenko, and four of their reserves played 10-plus minutes. They are a solid bench of role players, including Kyle Korver, who scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Coach Mike D'Antoni went eight deep instead of his typical seven, with the addition of new acquisition Gordan Giricek.

D'Antoni doesn't want to hear it. Nothing raises his hackles like criticism about his short bench.

"The object is to win," he said earlier Friday. "It's not, 'Play everybody and have a good time and everybody goes home friends.' I'm getting ticked, because our (starters) are playing less minutes than anybody in the league."

He has a point about the misconception of his starters' minutes. The Suns have zero players in the top 27 of minutes per game in the Western Conference. Raja Bell is 28th with 35.5 minutes. Houston and the Los Angeles Lakers each have three players above that.

You want crazy minutes, look at Allen Iverson (42.4), Stephen Jackson (39.5) and Baron Davis (39.4).

The suggestion that D'Antoni go deeper is mind-boggling to him.

"OK, I don't want to play Steve (Nash), I want to play D.J. (Strawberry). Yeah, that makes sense," he said.

D'Antoni wasn't ripping Strawberry as much as he was trying to reiterate what he always has believed: He sticks with players he trusts and refuses to apologize for it.

This is where it gets dicey. The window of opportunity for players to prove themselves closes quickly in this neighborhood. Once it's closed, it's hard to crawl back through.

"We're here to win a championship," he said. "We're not here to develop players."

He might not be developing players right now, but he is trying to develop a functioning offense. And that seems to be getting in the way of this championship business.

D'Antoni still is tweaking and fine-tuning. O'Neal would like to stay on the court longer, for example, but the coach doesn't want him and Amaré Stoudemire out of the lineup at the same time. And when Stoudemire is ready to come out, he wants O'Neal to be fresh.

Still, O'Neal has made sure to let the coach know he's ready. As he tells people in the organization, "I have no night life." Consider how often he comes to work out in the arena during the evening, I believe him.

It's hard not to feel nostalgic about what the Suns used to be.

D'Antoni still believes that the new-version Suns can be successful. He also still believes that his preferred rotation is the way to go.

"One of the reasons we could win 60 games or 55 or go to the conference finals is because we have this group of seven guys, where there shouldn't be much of a drop-off when a guy comes out," he said. True, but none of this short-bench business will matter if the Suns can't get out of the first round of the playoffs.

And lately, that doesn't sound like such like a crazy proposition anymore.

You know, for everyones talk about the Lakers winning against a soft schedule...people forget that the reason the Lakers have a soft schedule now, is because we had one of the hardest before the All-Star break.

Also, we were winning these games without Pau Gasol, and with Andrew Bynum. For all the talk about Bynum, he only averaged about 14 and 10, whereas Pau is around 19 and 10. Next, Lamar was really giving us severely inconsistent games, whereas now he gives us an almost guarenteed double-double.

My point is, that before Pau we had the best record in the West (we were number 1) and that was without the same level of play we have now. That's why I feel that even though Drew and Ariza might not be around until the playoffs, we still should consider ourselves one of two favorites to win the whole thing: us and the Spurs who are doing their annual late season push. However, the Spurs will have to stay hot on it, because the Lakers arent going anywhere.

The Lake Show,

Agree with you post completely except for one thing.

We cannot dismiss the Celtics and to a lesser extent the Pistons. One of them is coming out of the East and they will be formidable.

THE MVP RACE: IT’S KOBE OVER KING JAMES, AND HERE’S WHY
By Ted M. Green for SportsHubLA

http://www.sportshubla.com/2008/03/08/the-mvp-race-its-kobe-over-king-james-and-heres-why/

AK and BK, great article. Ted Green is like SportsHubLA’s version of all out GHF. Funny, but I find myself clapping and shaking my head in total agreement every time I read stuff that Ted writes. When are you going to have him on NowLive?

At any rate, I think this article is the consummate assessment of why Kobe Bryant should win his first regular season MVP award this year. Ted nailed all of the salient points right on the head, including the Lifetime Award and PIP (Playing in Pain) Award.

What is most amazing to me about Ted’s article is that I actually wanted to read it and enjoyed reading it, which is quite a testament since the subject has been beaten to death in the media to the extent that most of us are totally sick of whole debate.

Good stuff, guys. Keep it going and thanks.

Tom

"We're here to win a championship," he said. "We're not here to develop players."

I'm glad PJ took the time to develop the rooks or "whale bleep" as he use to call them -- It seems he changed his philosophy out of necessity. Now Farmar Vujicic and Triaf are integral parts.

I hope so.

Posted by: Amazing_Happens | March 08, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Amazing_Happens,

Man, I was thinking about the same thing today. Not only did Bynum neutralize Chandler on the glass, but Tyson couldn't handle Drew offensively in the post. I remember when we beat the Hornets by 29 in New Orleans, Andrew played great interior defense by blocking and altering shots. I think Pau will do fine against Chandler especially on the offensive end because Pau has a versatile post up game and will also draw Tyson out of the paint and use his great passing skills. Pau can't let Tyson dominate him too much on the boards because LO will have his hands full with David West.

I think PJ will doing the right thing by working Bynum back slowly and PJ may not let on that Bynum could be back sooner as to keep opponents in the dark about when Drew could return. I read in the article that PJ said Andrew may not return until April, but then he said there's still no set time table so Drew could possibly come back sooner if his rehab improves in the next few weeks. Andrew may be on the treadmill this coming week, so we'll see how it goes. Go Lakers!!!

My GF wants to know what kind of dog Luke has? His name is Gus. I couldnt figure it out.

LakerTom

Great article! There's a few reasons why the article is bucking the trend of Lebron mvp article!

1. He stayed with the facts. Its very hard to argue the fact. Yes Kobe had an offseason mess on his hands. Yes everybody figured The Lakeshow to be a Lottery team. So many things he stated that so many other sport writers glossed over so quickly that if you didn't read slow enough yoi would miss it.

Ex. LEBRON IS SUCH A FEROCIOUS BEAST DEFENSIVELY..oh yea did I mention kobe is also..LEBRON IS PUTTIN UP MONSTER NUMBER AND DROPPED FIFTY ON THE KNICKS..well other than the 52 kobe happen to score against dallas..LEBRON IS THE MVP.

That is not calling it how it is. Atleast there a sports writer that have the Brass to actually write the truth instead of knowing the truth and being to much of coward to print it and post cuz it may Buck The Trend!!!!

just as i thought and hope for... that against a weak team, kobe doesn't need to go all out... just a minimal effort enough to kill the other team... MVP aura.

Lebron against a non play-off team scored 50...wow... he sure poured in a lot of juice...

Kobe against a non play-off team, just let his teammates build up some confidence... this is how you make your teammates better...

there has been a mis contention of the phrase, that a great player makes his teammates better. some, like hollinger will refer to the stats... and sadly he look at the stats only. i know there some guys out there, rely only on the stats. but its not only the stats.

i look farmar, sasha, ronny, vlad, LO, there swagger and confidence is much at the same level at Kobe's.. they don't have that few seasons ago...but now Kobe makes them feel that they are better.

as player myself, if you don't feel that you are a better player than before.. it would greatly affect your output. that is true to all kind of sports. in other words, it starts at your confidence.

for now LB is doing what he needs to do, to make his team reach the playoffs... right now Kobe is doing what he needs to do in order to win a championship.

Im so glad that Suns traded Marion for Shaq....I will be so happy when they will finish #9 seed

THE STATE OF THE LAKERS AND OTHER MOMENTOUS SUBJECTS…

The main thoughts that ran threw my head as I watched the Lakers crush the Clippers last night were that God truly is a Lakers fan and the Clippers need to relocate to Orange County or Oklahoma City or they will never escape the shadow and legacy of the Lakers.

Watching last night’s NBA action at a sports bar with friends was like winning a trifecta. We cheered the Lakers romp over the Clippers while simultaneously rooting the Jazz to drop the Suns and Nuggets to dump the Spurs. Game, Set, Match. Lakers back as top seed in the West over the Spurs and 5 games ahead of the Suns in the Pacific Division.

You can really see the way that having played a tougher schedule earlier now benefits the Lakers, who have an easy rematch against the Kings tomorrow, while the Rockets and Hornets, Jazz and Nuggets, and Suns and Spurs beat up on each other this weekend.

If you ever wondered what it would be like if everybody on the team played great, then last night’s game was just what you ordered. The Lakers had 7 players in double figures and 11 players who scored at least 6 points. Other than Luke Walton, every Laker player shot better than 50% from the field and beyond the arc.

While Kobe was his usual MVP self and Pau his usual double-double, the guy who played a great game was Lamar Odom: 15 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks in a team-high 37 minutes. While the great play of Drew and Pau have elevated the Lakers, the key to how well we are playing right now is Lamar Odom, who has become a beast.

While it’s disappointing that Andrew and Trevor will probably not be back until the playoffs, the news that Chris Mihm may actually be back by the end of this month could turn out to be a real plus for the Lakers, giving them another 7-footer to back up Pau and also allowing Ronny to move back to his natural power forward position.

It will be fun to see if Phil experiments with playing Mihm and Gasol at the same time. It would give Pau and Lamar the opportunity to slide into their ultimate positions of power forward and small forward and the team a chance to work on their twin towers offense. It could actually make it easier for Andrew to fit in if the team gets a head start.

I have to admit that I was initially skeptical that the Lakers could perform as well as they have without Andrew (a small case of GHE, LOL) but the way the team has been playing has me convinced that they can win it all despite the late return of injured players. And if we somehow fail to go all the way this year, there are still the next 10 years.

You have to give Phil Jackson and the Lakers coaching staff a lot of credit for the level at which they have these guys playing despite the injuries and changes in personnel. Like Kobe, Phil deserves to win COY based on lifetime achievement if nothing else. How can you win 9 championships and only 1 Coach of the Year award?

Phil is doing a great job managing the team’s and fans’ expectations. His tentative plans for integrating Andrew in slowly make sense, especially since we will not really need him until the second round of playoffs at the earliest. I also agree we need to be careful not to disturb the current team chemistry, which is terrific. Bottom line, however, we won’t be the best we can be until we get Andrew back.

Finally, I was really glad to see Vlade start and play well. Luke has totally lost all confidence in his shot, although the rest of his game seems to be picking up. Having Vlade’s 3-point shooting at the 3 makes us a much more dangerous team. We need to just keep concentrating on winning the next game. Everything else will work it self out. We are going to win the championship this year. I guarantee it.

"The Suns have found swagger. Problem is, it resides in opposing shooters.

"I think a lot of teams have a comfort level; they think they can score on us," Mike D'Antoni said. "They come in and shoot the lights out."

The Suns coach produced examples from Wednesday's 126-113 loss at Denver.........."

T minus 8 days and counting until the Puns fall out of the top 8.
(Unfortunately, both Dallas and Phoenix can't both drop out of the playoff picture.)

"While I do revel in the past of this franchise and can vividly remember those 7 game losses to the Celtics (and Knicjs in '70), (which was the start of the deep hatred I have for the Celtics (the 80's only fueld the hatred fire, even though we were the better team throughout the 80's---and actually we were often the better team than the Celtics (and Knicks) in the 60's as well, the lucky SOB's).....I do, however, live in the present and am definitly reveling in this present exciting team. Amen Brother. I didn't think anyone here hated the GreenieWeenies as much as I do. And I live in New England.
Glad to see I'm wrong about that.

Go Lakers!

LakerTom,
You do not want Mihm on the floor with the Lakers. You think Luke Walton's +/- on the floor is bad, Mihm's is worst. Mihm is soft and plays with absolutely no energy on both ends of the floor. \ You want Mihm to rest his ankle so he can rob another team a couple million dollars next year.

During yesterday's game, I found it hilarious that Stu seemed more interested in the Nuggets/Spurs game than the Lakers game. He was so happy that the Nuggets were leading.

It was good to see the Lakers confidently extend their lead on the Clips and give some extensive PT for the bench. The chemistry and camaraderie on the team is very encouraging. And how great was it to see DJ hit his turnaround Js and Coby knock down a pair of 3s?

The Lakers need to finish AT BEST 16-4 in order to secure a fourth seed in the playoffs. That 16-4 requirement depends on Phoenix finishing the season on a 20 game winning streak.

I want to give a little PROPS to a fellow blogger!

I find myself constantly criticizing every blog entry (just to myself fortunately) for grammar, punctuation, spelling, run on sentences, etc....

Every once in a while I start reading a post for a while and I realize it is well written with proper punctuation, spelling, etc... There are concise paragraph structures (which really does make reading easier) and NO CAPS (except when necessary to drive home a POINT).

I am not talking about content, everyone has an opinion, and I enjoy each one of them. I am simply saying it is nice to see the occasionaly well written post!!!

Point is 9 times out of 10 the end looks like this....

Props to LakerTom for many well written, and usually right on point, postings.

Props to Lakertom!

Lakerblog,

As many of you know, I'm from San Diego. As I've always known it to be, San Diego is an LA hating town. We San Diegans hate the Dodgers, we certainly hate the Raiders, and that hate spreads to the Lakers as well, except a few like myself, AZ, and ex of course.

Well, me being the die-hard Lakerfan that I am, I wore my Laker shirt today while hanging out in the Pacific Beach part of San Diego. You guys would not believe the positive reactions that I got just for wearing my Laker shirt today. When before, I would get, "Lakers Suck!", "Kobe's a bi**h"; today people were yelling, "Go Lakers!", honking horns, wearing Laker gear, etc.

Seriously, I've lived here my whole life and have gotten a heck of a lot more criticism for being a Laker fan than props. But man, today I felt like a superstar wearing my Laker shirt. And this is LA hating San Diego I'm talking about!

This Laker team is on the verge of something special and everyone knows it.

The team needs to stay humble and continue to execute.

Go Lakers!
