Fortunately, NBA games aren't 49 minutes long

March 19, 2008 |  9:26 am

Vlad_radmanovicPROGRAMMING NOTE: Join us for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11:00 am.  We'll have Kurt Helin of Forum Blue and Gold, will talk about last night's game, the new Bynum timetable, and other W.C. items of great import.

If they were, LA's 102-100 win over the Mavs in Big D might have had a decidedly different outcome.  But 48 is the magic number, and as such the Lakers were able to withstand a furious Dallas rally to escape with the victory.  Things started off well, as LA played perhaps its best half of the season.  Kobe came out red hot, hitting jumper after jumper (guess that extra practice paid off), the Lakers moved the ball well, and held Dallas to 33% from the floor in building a 21 point halftime lead.  At the end of the third, though, Dallas made a big run and cut the lead to 12, and the Mavs just kept going from there.  It took big performances (as shown in the box score) from Vlad Radmanovic, who hit three huge triples down the stretch, and Lamar Odom, who drilled two big free throws late, for the Lakers to hang on.  Ronny Turiaf reminded everyone he's more than simply an energy player, hitting some big jumpers early and performing well in the absence of Pau Gasol, while Sasha Vujacic combined a clutch jumper with some excellent acting to make his contributions

In the end, thought, the Lakers had to hold their breath until a well contested Dirk Nowitzki clanged harmlessly off the backboard before they could rest.   For Dallas, this one left a lot of questions, as the Mavs still can't seem to beat the good teams

The continuing evolution of Andrew Bynum's return continues to evolve in a direction unpleasant for Lakers fans.  The goal now?  Back by playoff time.  They want to see him run and jump- then recover- before thinking about game action.  But in the meantime, the Lakers can't focus on who isn't there, and need to try and get back to the attention to detail that wins games consistently.

So you know how Kobe joked yesterday about Mark Cuban letting him use the American Airlines Center gym because he's hoping 24 will join the Mavs in '09?  Well, if the Lakers let it get that far, Dallas will be in position to make a push.

With the win, the Lakers are back on top of the W.C.  Or a tie, at least.

REPOST:

You heard it here first Lakerville:

Friday, March 28

Lakers claim #1 in the West once again with a 51-22 record. Although a somewhat easy schedule after their tough road trip, the Lakers have fared well and seem to have adjusted to life without Gasol going 6-2 without him excluding the game he went out injured. The Lakers report Gasol is practicing with the team and will be available for Sunday's game with the Wizards...

Ak The Airported One - Bk,

I want to say thanks for your hard work. Your last (DFW) post has helped triggered a flashback and an accumulated appreciation for the blog.

With in the last week we had a poster by the name of Robert Chen. I recall this guy posting and asking about Roland Lazenby. He was asking about the legitimacy, and if that was Roland himself. Roland always left a signature “The Author of…”

At that point I recall Jon K telling someone to eat some paste (LMAO still), Zakee predicting Turiaf becoming the 2nd smartest player and rallying for a Devean George and Chris Mihm trade, having a Clipper Fan post his blah tirades, Rabid Fan hoping for Cook not to be extended and Zen being one of the most active posters.

I am completely typing drab now, but the blog reminds me of how we have come a long way since the Rudy T experiment. We now have Gasol, a much-improved Bynum and flashes of what’s to come of Farmar. It is an exciting future and thanks for the outlet to share our frustrations and joys for the Lakers.

I will forget many great posters, but here are a few that I immensely learned from (the inactive and semi-inactive ones). Why I never posted then, I don’t know. But I hope to have you guys post again. And please know from time to time I will see a post that brings a smile to my face, just because you guys kept the development of this website.

Fearless, Forrest, t_sensei, Gmac, DarthMamba, the Lamar Show, bonzoa, LakersSanDiego, lakofan, Ron, Amado Mex, Dude, godchild or was it gchild?, Pedro Navajas, Rabid Fan, Silver Dollar, Cable Guy, DJ Cobb Salad, Maleke, jonnybravo, KB8 Fan, dila, Dan Garcia, Kevin Nguyen, ekkie, BabyG, R.G. Gaznabi, VIVALOSLAKERS, Revgen, budha, Pete Maguire, and Roland Lazenby. (If that was really you)

Thanks.

Moving on to the next game! Can you dig it!

Guys correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't fisher play in the playoffs for the Lakers with a broken ankle? I remeember he said he need surgery but was still out there and playing at a high level. Whats the deal with Ariza? How bad is this injury. We got rid of Cookie and MO and now we have no one. Ariza is not going to be available for the playoffs. One of our best defenders. Shoot the leg with novacaine and get out theree and play.

I'm out

CrzyFan

Possibly the worse refed game I have seen since Miami was handed the championship by the refs giving Wade an automatic trip to the line each time he touched the ball.

This time the Lakers AND Mavericks were getting hosed. I thought I was for the refs letting players play until last night. It was hack a player night all night on both sides with nothing being called.

Then the worse call I think I have ever seen. Ronny going for a lay-up, Dirk INTENTIONALLY fouls him and shoves him to the ground IN FRONT OF THE REF and there was no call. To Ronny's credit he goes down and takes out his frustration on Dirk. I would have exploded and called that ref every name in the book and been tossed AND THEN probably went more bezerk on the ref. Well at least from my reaction at home.

But Ronny is a prof and I am not. BTW does anyone else think Steve Jaffe (sp) has a vendeta against the Lakers? I cringe every time he refs a game. To be 'fair' I think he hates all ballplayers because they make so much more than him, but particularly the Lakers. Stern needs to get him out of the league ASAP because of his ego. But instead he lets him ref the playoffs.

Great win for the Lakers but one of the worse refed games I have ever seen and needed to get that off my chest. And I think that non-call on Dirk was THE WORSE 'call' I have ever seen from a ref.

Vlad looks good in a hero's role.

With Phoenix and the rest of the west breathin' down our collective necks, I hope he and the boys can work another miracle in Utah.

That's an industrial size hope, but that's what fans are for.

Any news on Kobe ? Looked like he may have injured his groin.

Did y'all see Kobe diving on the floor?

Great game for 2 quarters and 9 minutes.

Scary game for 1 quarter and 3 mins.

Just Win Baby!

From Thorpe's chat, hilarious!:

Kobe (LA): Tell Lebron I carried my team for three years and got nothing. Where's my MVP?

David Thorpe: (1:01 PM ET ) It's coming, I think...

Good morning all!
We squeaked our another win last night. And we still have to face Dallas 1 more time, which should be another close game. Great job from the role players stepping up. We just lost our focus and energy in the 3rd quarter. Lets hope we can continue what we did in the 1st half in Utah.

What was up with the Mark Cuban staredown of Avery? Does Avery write a blog now??

I also hate it when Javie refs a game. You just know it's going to be lopsided and unfair - and not just to the Lakers. I think we should start the "Get Steve Javie out of NBA ref'ing or someone's going to jail" bandwagon - Mamba24, what do you think?

It sucks that Bynum won't be back until the first round at the earliest. That's definitely a body blow.

wattup mamba24!

what a victory!
lakers were getting gyped on foul calls all nite, but they kept their heads in the game & pulled it out.

given the current circumstances (injuries), i think it would be wise for the Lakers to run more pick-n-rolls/pops between Kobe & Lamar/Kobe & Turiaf. Lammy can take it to the rack at will off the p-n-r & Ronny Size is pretty money with them 14-17 foot jumpers. just a thought.

i'd also like to see Kobe or Lamar bring the ball up the court & then slide onto the block more often... both those guys are a certified mismatch just about every nite & this would help them have a post presence until the bigs are back. it would also serve to throw the other team off a bit.

glad to see our boys win one shorthanded in the big D!

lets hope they can recreate the magic against utah

-Fowl Out

AK-

Kudos to you and Brian for rarely pulling out the old “the officials had it out for the Lakers Card”. In fact, you guys only point out truly hideous and atrocious officiating.

However, I thought there might be some offhand mention of it in your report today. I try my hardest to be a “balanced” fan, really I do. However, it sure seemed like the officials got caught up in the Mavericks momentum last night. Now I am talking more about the vibe I got in the second half than # of plays/fouls etc. It sure “seemed” like they swallowed their whistles on numerous over the backs (in Dallas’s favor), and seemed to have two sets of rules for what counted as a foul (one for the Mavericks and one for the Lakers). My shock over the fact that Lamar benefited a loose ball foul on a rebound was only overshadowed by my later absolute astonishment that he made both free throws. Now, I do not think there was an officiating conspiracy, but I did anticipate a mention of the fact that the officiating style was another contributing factor to the run Dallas made during the late 3rd and 4th quarters.

Hopeless Homer CS

Sorry if this is a repost, I lost track of which post I was replying to...

-Fowl Out

The difference between the first half and the second half was the intensity. I posted a couple of days ago that the Lakers has been lacking intensity. Well, they came out with defensive intensity and focus. Defense in the first half was amazing, Ronny stepped up big with those blocks. The offense was running smooth, Kobe was picking his spots and executing, not forcing. The first half was beautiful.

The second half, not so much. We came out flat and acted like we had already won the game. No intensity on defense, we picked up a trillion fouls in the 3rd. And Kobe wasn't picking his spots, just firing at will. Then slowly but surely the lead dwindles. Hopefully the Lakers realize from now on that a big lead means nothing. Remember that 28(?) 4th quarter comeback against Dallas back in the day, Lakers should have known better last night.

Im very pleased to see Vlad breakout, he's had a couple of really good games (I went to the Nuggets-Lakers game in Denver and he was on FIRE). We just need him to be more consistent. You never know what you are going to get out of Luke or Vlad.

Props to LO for some clutch free throws, he will def. be put in those situations in the playoffs. And props to Sasha for shooting through his slump and hitting that big 3.

GO LAKERS

i'm worried about GUNNER... he hasn't showed up yet since kobe lead the team in last night win..

TO GUNNER: we still need you here... please come back.

The infamous Zen Report

So far, I'm feeling pretty good about this Laker season. Not just because they are winning. But also the fact, that pretty much all my predictions have come true!

1) Injuries seem to hit this team and I thought it wasn't realistic for us to improve to 55 wins this year with basically the same team as last year..55 win bandwagon probably won't be riding. They almost got lucky with Gasol, but now he's out for a week or two. Congrats to all those who took a more cautious approach like myself!

2) I knew and the Lakers knew Bynum would be out a lot longer. I told you the next step would be Bynum out until the playoffs! The Lakers are trying to give us the pain slowly instead of saying "He's done for the season"

3) All of a sudden, Phoenix is playing better! It's still too early to tell, but they now have won 5 in a row. Everyone seem to expect them to roll over and die..I would never underestimate a motivated Shaq (at any age). He's still the biggest guy in the league and nobody can stop him down low when he really wants to get in there. Some say that long term this majorly hurts their transition game. So far, they seem to be improving.

Also folks, it looks like the championship is coming out of the East this year. I love my team, but I don't see them or the west winning this year.

Why would I say this? Because Detroit and Boston are very talented. Plus, they have an easier schedule to rest their players! They don't have to face a playoff team every night so they have less wear and tear. They can pretty much coast to the NBA finals, well rested. That is one advantage to being in the East.

Larry of LA -

As you can see from my post. I agree with you. Yeah, how about the 3 second call on Turiaf when he had only just gotten into the lane. I replayed it five times to try and figure out what I was missing until I realized it wasn't me who was missing something. The general rule seems to be to only call three seconds when players are in the lane for 5 secends, but to go the opposite direction and call Turiaf for just flashing in the lane was sort of funny. What did Turiaf do to the refs last night anyway?

I feel better now too!

Well. Not only does Cuban have no class for messing with AK and the Blog world, but what about those Texas trolls who couldn't even show enough class to stick around a few minutes and give their homies a standing "O" for the second longest streak in NBA history?

Can't wait to see them on 4/4 when we hand another well desreved whoopin'!

How do you spell big win?

L-a-s-t-n-i-g-h-t.

Great, great necessary win. Who cares how it happened, lets just be thankful it did.

I'm starting to like our chances of sneaking up on Utah and delivering one proper spanking.

Yeah!

AK,

Screw Texas, anyways. It'll be better for everyone once you get hell out of that trash heap.
-----------------------------------------------

Posters shoul stop being provincialistic. TEXAN Laker fans are not in any shape or form lesser than other Laker fans. If you have observed the feed of last night's games, you should have heard the Laker Fans in AAC shouting MVP for Kobe specially after he made the circus shot. Do you know the abuse those Laker fans get for vocally and openly supporting the Laker Team in an enemy arena? Stop making derogatory remarks about a place. A Texas Laker Fan is as passionate being a Laker as well as being a Texan. Make trash talk about other teams but not the place. Bear that in mind the next time you post.

Just a poster's opinion.

Flagrant Fowl,

Great Great post!

Laker/Kobe Fan,

great take. even though i remain a southern cali resident laker fan, i enjoy watching laker road games and seeing all of the purple & gold sprinkled throughout the sellout crowds.

it proves that the lakers are not only a southern california brand, but a national brand.

and with gasol suiting up for the lake show, the lakers remain a global brand as well.

peace.

Tha_Show goes where lesser mortals may fear to tread.

tha show,

I gotta give you a holla holla holla for that post!

Anybody else not getting anything on the K-Bros show? I'm not getting any sound
at all.

Hey BK,

IRA NEWBLE?? Whats the deal with Lakers tryna sign him or is that no longer a consideration?? If Trevor is gonna be out, we all know Luke is one unathletic basketball move from another injury (knock on wood)..We def need assurance at the 3 just in case..Getting Ira would be better than the Suns or Spurs or somebody else out West snatching him up...Just my thought.

That interview with Vlad Rad in the previous thread where he said that he has not played as well in the Lakers the last 2 years as he had previous in his career. Can you imagine how good the Lakers can be if Rad gets back to where he was before the Lakers?
Can you imagine if Lamar starts playing every game with the aggression that he had last night and even improves upon it?
I think both are possible and if so, last night's win could be one of the most important of the regular season if it was truly a breakthrough game for both Vlad and LO.
It was also Ronny's best game in a while since he started losing minutes after the Pau trade.
If these 3 front liners conitnue their upward momentum, we can beat Utah, and to come back 2-2 to Staples after losing Pau will be very impressive.

Repost from previous thread -

Mamba24 - please don't forget to add me to the "Andrew will now be known as the Beast" bandwagon. I posted yesterday, but guess you didn't see it. I said I'd bring the liquid sea minerals & dit da jow in case of any future mishaps (with LO's foot or otherwise)!! LOL!

ALSO - SO GLAD TO SEE THE ROLL CALL make it's pre-playoff appearance!! Smells good.....

GO LAKERS!

Zen - you really don't think Lakers can win 9 out of the last 15 to hit 55? Really? Come on man! Jump on board the "55 win" bandwagon - the ride might be a bit bumpy but it's going to reach Lakerland with lights flashing, sirens blazing and the banners flying high! Just watch! LOL!

GO LAKERS!

bzar-

Hmmm.... maybe try to go to www.nowlive.com, and click directly into our show window?

Sorry for the trouble.

BK

AK/BK,

Along your line of reasoning, unfortunately, NBA games aren't 24 minutes long.

Charles and Mamba24,

good to hear from you guys, your consistent presence on the blog has been great for everybody.

your vibes have even made me optimistic despite all of the recent injuries.

peace.

as always, c'mon lake show!
