An odd way to try and make you forget Wednesday's loss...

March 28, 2008 | 11:56 pm

With any luck, the Lakers will start playing some legitimate title-contending, cream of the crop, elite squads ASAP, because this two-game stretch against a pair of the NBA's worst is killing them. Wednesday's loss against the Charlotte Bobcats went coupled with tonight's 114-111 fall to the Grizzlies, a squad rarely associated with the word "powerhouse," especially on the road. So what accounted for Grizz's sixth victory outside of Memphis?  Well, outside of a honkin' 53 points from Kobe Bryant (19-37 from the field), there wasn't a ton of scoring support. The only other Lakers to reach double figures were Jordan Farmar (11) and Sasha Vujacic, who required 17 shots to rack 14 points.  The Machine's errant touch reflects one where the team shot a paltry 39% from the field.  And speaking of inefficient, the Lakers chucked a franchise-record 45 balls from downtown.  (Before you ask, not a typo.)

That's just crazy enough to not work.

But despite the madness and mostly poor defense, the Lakers did manage to stage a rally and offer themselves a shot at a tie at the end of regulation.  But with .9 ticks remaining and (ironically enough) a trey needed to knot things up, Luke Walton attempted to force an inbound pass to Kobe rather than use a 20-second time out still in his pocket.  The ball gets batted away, along with any shot at a winning box score.

AK (The breakdown is below, courtesy of BK)

The Good:  Slim pickins...

  • Kobe Bryant: 53 points on 19-37 from the floor, including 9-17 from downtown.  He was absolutely on fire early, posting 23 in the first quarter and 34 for the half.  In the second 24, Memphis coach Mark Iavaroni started double and triple teaming Bryant, and forced the ball from his hands.  Kobe still fired away, but  did his best to move the ball out of traffic to open teammates.  Tonight, though, they didn't come through.  He was also effective on the glass, grabbing 10 boards, and chipped in with three steals as well.  PJ said after the game that he was happy to see Kobe come out aggressively, though it might have taken some energy out of his teammates.  Lord knows there was a lot of standing around.  But philosophical arguments about style of play aside- I think I'm on record here preferring more ball movement and shot distribution when possible, and I'm sure we could have a grand debate on whether the other guys miss because they don't get the ball, or they don't get the ball because they're missing/not moving- but overall Kobe played a good game.  He also did a good job on Mike Miller defensively, a nice rebound from Wednesday's game where he played a poor game on that end.
  • DJ Mbenga: It's all relative, but while the Lakers suffered on the scoreboard with him in the game (he was -18 in 16+ minutes before fouling out, and while +/- doesn't explain everything, in this situation it's a good sign they were losing ground with him on the floor),  pressed into duty because of Ronny Turiaf's foul trouble, Mbenga gave them some decent minutes.   Four blocks, four points.  Only one rebound- how does that happen?- and the aforementioned six fouls.  Perhaps my expectations are too low and saw nothing to change my belief that extended minutes for him aren't a good thing, but he worked hard, did what he could, and made some contributions.
  • The Support Staff... Fourth Quarter Only: Ronny Turiaf, plagued with foul trouble early, finally started pitching in defensively, making two big blocks.  On the other end, he was huge on the offensive glass, grabbing four rebounds, and put in four points as well.  Luke Walton, at least for 9:45.1 of his 9:46 on the court, made some positive contributions.  Eight points, four boards, a dime and a block.  Of course, that last .9...
  • Chris Mihm: He got on the floor for five minutes, which surprised even him.  There was no great contribution there, but it was nice to see him back on the court.  Lord knows they need some size right now.
  • C'mon Guys, Take the Open Three!: They were just too shy about shooting from outside.
Just kidding.  Every once in a while, I like to see if anyone's paying attention.

The Bad:

  • Three Pointers... Lots and Lots of Three Pointers: 45 overall, ironically one fewer than they needed at the final buzzer.  But putting that aside for a moment... 45 three pointers?  Are you *@(@&#$ me?  The Lakers easily obliterated the previous franchise record for triple attempts in regulation (36), and also managed to beat the record for a game in OT (44).  Wow, that's a lot of shooting.  Memphis, like every other team the Lakers have seen recently and will see for the foreseeable future, at least until the bigs come back, went zone and dared the Lakers to shoot out of it. Man alive, did they oblige.  But while the percentage (33.3%) wasn't atrocious, shooting that much from distance totally screws with everything else happening on the floor.  It hurts them defensively, as Memphis was able to get run out after run out, and also more easily create opportunities to penetrate (helping explain both their 38-16 FT advantage and the 60-32 win regarding points in the paint).  Incidentally, that was part of the Memphis game plan- to get inside and hurt the Lakers, who aren't a great team down there right now.  How's that for a role reversal?
  • The Supporting Cast: Take away Kobe's 19-37, and the rest of the team shot a robust 33.3%.  It's not that every shot they took was a bad one- even the constant shots from distance were often wide open- but they simply didn't go in.  And overall, the shot selection, and the patience to get shots (as Fish put it, recognizing time, place and context) was totally lacking.  LO pitched in with an unusual double double (11 boards, 11 dimes... and two points) and was sick as a dog, so keep that in mind. Jordan Farmar had 11 points and wasn't all that bad.  Fish was 2-7, Ronny, 3-10, Sasha 5-17, including 4-14 from downtown, which includes 3-10 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.  Dude loooooooooves to shoot the rock.  Overall, though, it wasn't a great night for the role guys.
  • Penetration: Did I mention the Grizzlies outscored the Lakers 60-32?  They did.  The Lakers are having trouble keeping the littles out of the lane, and without the bigs available to stop penetration, Memphis was able to do some serious damage inside.  38 FTs for a squad not known for beating people up down low.  How about 20/12/3 for Darko, with four blocks?  That ought to improve his mood over at Free Darko.
  • Luke's Last .9: It's hard to say they'd have won in the end (desperation threes not being the most reliable of shots), but dude, if the 20 is available, use it.

Of course, there's plenty more to choose from.  Bad ball movement, bad player movement.  The defense was lacking.  Basically, they lost to a team that had won five road games all year.  Yes, the Lakers are beat up, yes, they're shorthanded.  Yes, it was even worse tonight, with LO sick and Fish working with the bum foot.  But keeping all that in mind, they still need to win a home game against the Grizzlies.

QUOTES:

Former Laker guard Javaris Crittenton

On winning in L.A.

"It feels good.  It feels good every time you get a victory.  You know, playing against your former teammates, it's a great feeling.  It meant a little more to me than just a win."

On the guarding Kobe
"It was difficult.  He's such a great player.  He came out and had like, 54... I don't know what he finished with but it was something ridiculous. He put up a lot of points.  I tried to come out and guard when I could.  You know, just like (during Laker) practice.  I tried to guard him as much as I could in practice to get better.  Tonight, it was ridiculous.  Offensively, he went off."

On the nice reception he got from the Staples crowd
"That felt good to know I still got people in L.A. behind me and cheering for me even though I'm on another team.  I appreciate that from the fans."

Ronny Turiaf

On what's the issue with the defense right now

"I don't really know.  Maybe we're not staying with the guys all the way to the basket.  Maybe we're not being talkative.  All I know is we're trying to play hard.  Unfortunately, it's not going our way right now. (Pause) I don't know.  I don't really know how to answer that."

Lamar Odom (who, by the way, looked half dead while talking to the press.  Dude was seriously sick during this one)

On the defensive issues currently being experienced

"I don't know if it's a chemistry thing or guys not taking care of their assignments or the extra effort isn't there.  Something is missing."

On how much his health affected his performance
"I didn't feel good, but I still went out there and played the game, so there's no excuses.  You make some, you miss some.  I tried to just focus on rebounding and moving the ball.  I got a pretty good look in that corner with about 16 seconds left.  That damn ball went in and out.  That's the way it goes, right.  That's a play I gotta make."

Kobe Bryant

On whether this was the most wasted 53 points of his career.

"Pretty much.  We didn't do a good job defensively at all.  Staying in front of the ball has been a big problem for us."

On how to fix the issue
"We have to address how we're going to cover screen and roll, cover little quick guards.  Pick and roll situations.  If we can't solve that problem, then we'll have to continue to get penetrated on until we get the big games and they can bail us out by blocking shots."

On whether some of his less experienced teammates might not understand that the opportunity to win the West could be slipping away
"It's not going anywhere.  We're still, what, one game back?  It's not dire straits.  We've lost to two teams that we won't be seeing in the playoffs.  We'll just move on from here.  I don't think it's dire straits by any stretch of the imagination.  But still, we gotta buck up."

On the team being so heavily dependent on his contributions throughout the game
"We had an opportunity to knock down some shots.  I just took what the defense gave me.  They were leaving me open, so I'm gonna shoot the ball."

On his situation with the technicals (which he said he wasn't worried about going down the stretch)
"The (ref) must not watch soccer. I just won't kick the ball again where somebody can catch it."

On the defensive issues with missing their two best big men
"That's a big concern, especially defensively, we're gonna get penetrated on. We need to have somebody in the middle that's going to block shots. Having Pau and Drew back there obviously covers up for a lot of that."

AK: Was tonight somewhat thrown out of sync due to Lamar being sick, Fisher still feeling out what he can do on that foot?
KB: (smiles) "That's a good excuse.  I'll roll with that."

Good to see The Mamba's still got a sense of humor during this frustrating period.

Injuries, fatigue are starting to catch up to us.

Well, we’ve been through this before. The Lakers have been up and down all year, and fortunately mostly up. It’s been a long year and the Lakers are again tired and hurt.
Hopefully they will be able to switch it back on in when the playoffs start.

Still it’s painful to watch. Losing 3 of 4 to teams who are very athletic gives us pause, no doubt.
When are the Lakers going to realize these teams are going to bring it against us? The defensive intensity from the Bobcats and Grizzles was night and day compared to the Lakers. You could tell we were going to lose this game after the 1st quarter. There is no excuse to lose 3 in a row at home against this competition. The Lakers only interest seems to be attempting outscore a more athletic opponent with no thought to defense. To be content to put up constant 3 pointers borders on laziness.

Where is the pride? Where is win # 50?

Time to get back to work boys…

First Post???

Sad day for the LAKERS Nation!!!!

Don't worry this will be the last day of sadness ....

Glory days will folllow ....

What is this energy BS Phil keeps talking about? Phil never takes responsibility for anything and he is very slick at how he implies that Kobe had something to do with why his teammates can't shoot the ball.

Kobe carries the team literally in the first half and that's what Phil comes up with.....he may have taken energy from the other guys...........What about the lack of energy against Charlotte Phil? Who the f was responsible for that?

The bottom line is Phil does a terrible job at preparing his teams......do they even practice defense and pick and roll situations? Do they even practice rotations?

The Lakers problems do not happen on the offensive end of the floor, it happens on the defensive end.

Why did they sign Ira Newble if Phil isn't going to play him.......especially since they need Defense

Kobe played a great game.......shooting when he should shoot and passing when he should pass.............other guys have to knock down shots.......it's that simple

Good to see that Kobe didn't look too frustrated in the post-game interview. His interview made me feel a little better about the loss. Not sure why, but seeing that he did have a sense of humor about the game tonight but also recognizing that they can't keep this up, shows me that he is a good leader.

Kobe's response to a reporter saying Kwame Brown was smiling after the Memphis win is priceless:

"For what? *chuckles* I'm happy for him though"

And I liked the intensity he showed on court in the first half. Every player should start with that same intensity. I think Phil's excuse that Kobe took the energy out of some players is a silly excuse. You show up with energy, ready to play hard and beat the other team. You cut into the paint. Not make wild threes, especially if those threes aren't falling in.

And yeah, Lamar looked terrible in the post-game interview. Poor guy needs a lot of R&R.

As disappointed as I am with the loss, I was glad to see Chris playing tonight. I want to see Ira, Gasol, Andrew and Trevor out on the court soon. I was surprised to see Andrew and Trevor at some event on Thursday. Hopefully that means they're coming back soon.

GO LAKERS!!! We'll get through the injuries, the sickness, EVERYTHING. I have faith.

pfunk36, I am glad that there is at least one other Laker fan out there that understands the real problem with the Lakers, it is PHIL J. You are right, once again he takes no responsibility for the loss. The so called hall of fame coach allowed his team to give up 114 points to Memphis (Memphis, not Phoenix). It was sad watching the Lakers down by 10 late in the game, while Phil is eating on the bench and sitting back comfortable, like he is enjoying a good movie. None of the Laker teams since he has been coach have defended the pick and roll well. They woudl always blame Shaq for not being able to rotate, but now what is the excuse? Wake up Laker nation, as long as Phil is coach we are in trouble. He no longer has the heroics of Kobe/Shaq and Jordan/Pippen to bail him out. I'm waiting now for the so called hall of fame coach to do some real coaching.

B. Bryant

Korey,

You'll get no apology.

The Lakers shot way too many threes tonight. And missed too many of them. That is correct. But you
placing that burden ON Sasha and Farmar is incorrect.

Without Gasol or Bynum, the two best post players on the team tonight were Luke Walton and MBenga.

The Lakers are a good offensive team when they have someone who can play in the post that they
can throw it in to for easy shots THAT THEY MAKE. Tonight, Ronny Turiaf was not that someone. He
repeatedly bricked layups and dunks in this game. 1-for-7 shooting in the first half and 3-for-10 overall
doesn't cut it. If Ronny goes 4-for-7 in the first half, not only would the Lakers have won the game, but
they'd have been throwing it in to Ronny more instead of jacking up 3's. Instead, Ronny repeatedly bricked
easy shots until he got in foul trouble. And then MBenga came in and played better on offense
(2-for-3 shooting), but was also a foul machine, and fouled out. And of course, Lamar's 1-for-7 shooting
and 2 points didn't help either.

Sasha took SEVENTEEN SHOTS!!! And it's not because Sasha went out and said, gee I'm going to
shoot like it's going out of style tonight. It's because THERE WAS NO INSIDE PRESENSE. There was
nobody to throw the ball inside to who would score consistently.

To illustrate my point, consider the last full game that Gasol played. It was March 11 against the Raptors.
Gasol made 5-of-9 and Odom made 9-of-12 and Ronny made 3-of-5. And only 2 of Lamar's shots were
3-pointers. So there you had 3 people making more interior shots and thus making the scoring more balanced.
In that game, Sasha took 7 shots and Farmar took 9 shots. Sasha only took 2 3-pointers and he made both
of them. Farmar had 5 assists. With inside scoring working, Sasha and Farmar played their roles well.

Also consider the recent Utah game. This was a game WITHOUT Gasol or Bynum, but where Lamar
and Ronny actually did their jobs well. Lamar hit 9-of-14 (8 of 11 inside shots), Ronny hit 3-of-6, and
Kobe hit 11-of-24, only 2 of which were 3-pointers. Once again, there was enough inside scoring
that there wasn't a great NEED for the outside shooters to shoot as much. Sasha took 8 shots (and
made 4 of them), Farmar took 9 shots. The team only took 22 3-pointers overall.

When someone is actually producing inside, Farmar and Vujacic do pass up shots to get the ball inside.
When Ronny shoots 3-for-10 on mostly layups and dunks and Lamar shoots 1-for-5 inside, guys like
Farmar and Vujacic feel COMPELLED to shoot more just to keep the Lakers in the game.

What exactly do you want Sasha and Farmar to do?

Throw it inside to Ronny more so he can go 6-for-20? (that's assuming Ronny could have actually
stayed out of foul trouble long enough to take 20 shots)

Throw it to Lamar more, so he can go 2-for-14?

Go post up against Darko to show Ronny & Lamar how it's done?

Give it to Kobe EVERY time down the floor and hope he can go for 80 again?

Or maybe you didn't realize that BOTH Farmar and Vujacic shot higher percentages than Odom and Turiaf.
Where is your diatribe about how angry you are at Odom and Turiaf for bricking layups all game? Where is
your call that Phil should play Luke Walton more, since he did at least TRY to get in the post (no 3's for Luke)
and also shot a higher percentage than Odom or Turiaf.

Could it be that your bias against Farmar and Vujacic incites you to blame them for the loss, despite the
fact that the guys that were taking the easier shots shot worse (other than Kobe, of course)?

Jordan did drive the lane or the baseline a few times, and he was 3-of-4 inside the 3-point line. But he also
ran into a packed in zone and turned it over a couple of times. If Gasol or Bynum was in there, then Jordan
could flip it over the top to them for the easy score. With an ineffectual Turiaf and Odom, people double
and triple teamed Jordan knowing that if he passed it to Turiaf, he'd miss it anyway.

No. There will be no apology from me. In fact...

I want an apology FROM YOU to Sasha and Farmar. They're out there working hard and trying to win, and
you're criticizing two young role players because they are unable to take up the slack for missing
veterans (Gasol, Bynum), ineffective veterans (Odom, Radmanovic), and undersized young players forced to
play out of position (Turiaf)

It's funny, you're on the right track when you say this:

>>>Injuries happen. So you have to have players who can step in and play solidly.... We dont...

So are you expecting Farmar and Vujacic to play center and power forward to fill in for Bynum and Gasol?
Obviously they can't. But you're so blinded by your bias against Farmar and Vujacic to recognize the
fact that it's Odom and Turiaf that are filling in for Gasol and Bynum. And in the games where Odom and
Turiaf have played effectively with Gasol & Bynum missing, Farmar and Vujacic have deferred to them
and the Lakers have won. And in the games where Odom and Turiaf have stunk it up, Farmar and Vujacic
have jacked it up more (especially in the second half) trying to keep the Lakers in the game.

So let's hear your apology.

kobe didn't "carry" the team the 1st quarter, he hogged the ball the 1st quarter. he didn't set up his teammates as he's done in the past. he just did his own thing. he kept calling for the ball, and what can his teamates do but give him the ball or he's gonna bitch about or clap at them. how can they possibly deny the best player of the game? if he asks for it, he's gon get it.

they're def. gonna lose in the playoffs if they play like this. if kobe doesn't get his teammates involved and set them up, then they are def. gonna lose. we only need kobe to dominate when the game is on the line and when we're in overtime. other than that, he just needs to attract all the attention and dish it out to his teammates.

don't they know by now? goodnesssss.

if it's an energy thing, why don't they play more energetic music before the game? they should play some trance/techno to get the players going.

also.. mbenga was horrible. why is he on the good section? he keeps fouling people after they dunk. he did this like 3 times. he's using all the fouls to give, and gets them in foul trouble. ronny too. don't they know they only need to alter shots and not necessarily block them?

horrible.

kobe should move to the center position... he'll be the inside presence. and then he can dish it out and the lakers can all shoot those damn 3's that they like. or ronny can go backdoor and dunk it for once.

OH I KNOW. PLAY IRA NEWBLE DANGIT. BMENGA AIN'T GETTING IT DONE. THEY'RE ALREADY LOSING THE GAME, JUST PUT IRA IN ALREADY.

AK/BK
I see weekly updates about Bynum and Pau but I really want to know what is up with Ariza.. is he coming back soon? Ariza is someone we DEFINITELY need out there to win this thing... Of course Bynum and Pau are needed but Ariza is our hidden wild card that does so many little things for us. I WANT ARIZA BACK!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

THIS LAKER TEAM HAS NO CONFIDENCE OR LEADERSHIP !!! IT LEFT THE BUILDING ON MY BACK!!!!!!!!!!

Lose to a 6-28 road team. Lose to a 5-30 road team (1-20 Western Conference).

Where is the MVP when you need him? 2 points in the 4th quarter. Took his own teammates out of rhythm by taking so many shots in the beginning. If Kobe's going to do that, then he has to make sure that he follows through since it was apparent his teammates were deferring to him because of his propensity to shoot during the early stages of the game.

I noted after the loss to the Bobcats. What exactly can Kobe do these days to affect the outcome of the game other than scoring? He doesn't play defense particularly well anymore and the Lakers were actually fortunate that Bryant's shots were falling; considering most of them were jump shots.

The leader sets the tone for the team. Kobe started to shoot a lot of 3's. Guess what the rest of the team does. Follow suit.

Bryant's game is beginning to resemble Jordan's stint on the Wizards. Nothing but jumpshots. Can't blow by anybody. Rarely creates open looks for teammates. Either his legs are really hurting but I do hope the Lakers don't give Kobe the maximum.

He's clearly on the decline. The decline of a player is usually evident in his shot selection. Kobe's game is relegated to being a volume jump shooter. Remember, he couldn't even get enough lift and had his jumpshot blocked twice.

If the Lakers really do have the "best player in the league", why are the Lakers losing to two of the worst of the worst road teams in the league? If Kobe is truly #1 out of 300+ players, why isn't this fact showing up more in the W-L column? Instead, the Lakers are only a .500 team with Gasol out of the lineup.

It's excuses after excuses for Bryant pundits. W-L is the bottom line. Where is the "MVP" when the team needs him? Isn't it during these tough times that the MVP should rise up and carry the team? Yeah, you might argue that he scored 53 points.

Obviously that's not the formula for winning with this roster. From what I remember, Bryant's scored 40+ this season around 5-6 (possibly even 4) times. The Lakers have obviously done well without needing him to score in bunches. What this roster needs is somebody to lead by example by PLAYING THE RIGHT WAY. Team ball offense predicated on solid defense.

If the team sees it's leader, having made up his mind before the game to jack up shots, then the teammates are not going to commit themselves on the defensive end since their leader isn't leading by example. He talks the talk (barks a lot) but rarely walks the walk (doesn't bite).

As alluded to in previous entry, Bryant's decision making process is obviously skewed. Since Bryant was still fuming about the technicals, what does he decide to do?

Bingo. You guessed correctly if you said that Bryant was going to come out and be very very aggressive on the offensive end. It's like he's trying to "show" up nonexistent entities. Is that how he psyches himself up before a game? It was downhill once Bryant jacks up 3 consecutive shots on the Lakers first 3 possessions.

MVP? Seriously? The best of the best losing to 6-28 and 5-30 road teams? Honestly? Bryant's teammates are at fault? So when the Lakers win, Bryant's the MVP. But when the Lakers lose, the onus is on the team?

That sure makes sense.

-Jeffs Aho

The Lakers need to stop gambling on defense. It can be a part of defensive intensity, but they overutilize their gambles and don't take the right chances because they 7 out far too often.

We had a lot of reasonable excuses to lose this game, but I still think we should have won it.

We need to play a little smarter.

Turiaf's first foul was not smart. We had a few other fouls where they guy got an easy bucket. We didn't foul properly to stop the basket. There was no commitment to either foul or not. We just let the foul happen if it was going to happen.

I don't ever, ever, ever want to hear about Luke's so-called, reputed high basketball IQ again.

Even I was thinking that we should call another timeout to get a better look.

We really missed Lamar's great rebounding in this game. His ueber efficient clean-up of the boards makes up for a lot of our offensive deficiencies.

I feel like we got to see last year's team play today. And it was about right. Everyone shot poorly except for Kobe. Defense was suspect. We only got Lamar for half the game. We lost to a totally mediocre team in part by playing foolishly and demonstrating weakness in character.

We need to right the ship desperately here.

One word...DENIAL.

Although losing to Charlotte and Memphis on our home floor is upsetting, I dont really care if we don't get home court for the West playoffs as long as where healthy.

One thing that is really starting to bother me though is that Jordan and Sasha thinking they can jack up 3 pointer after 3 pointer. Tonight for example the 2 of them played 48 minutes and they jacked up 19 three pointers whilst hitting 5.

19 THREE POINTERS IN 48 MINUTES R U FREAKIN KIDDING ME!!!!

No wonder the lakers defense is crap cause those 2 jacking up three pointers gives the other team run out opportunities and fast break chances.

I hope Pau plays sunday just cause it will make them pass the ball inside a few times for crying out loud.

The answer to our teams problems is not Sasha trying to practice his 3 point shot.....or Luke Walton for some reason remaining in the NBA when their are so many more deserving players......
The Lakers need to slow it down and drive and draw fouls and just really go back to the basics. Might be boring but its what will work.
Kobe is just so rad....He is a true Los Angeles Laker. I like too that Lamar has put his heart into the team.
Seeing Crittenton last night I really wished we had seen Walton go for a long long bus ride out of LA and that Crittenton would have stayed in our city.
Anyway the team will pull through.
Its like all of theese people come to the games and just expect the Lakers to win win win and when they dont they start to cry.
Its kind of funny, most of these people have lived in LA a short time. And then they just expect the world.
Like they pay the $5000 for their courtside seat or box and then start to complain.
Los Angeles is the best and so is our team.
So leave if you dont like it.
We for sure do not need more people in LA.
Thanks

AK/BK: what's wrong with the Lakers vs Grizzlies
Live game post?
I would like to read it.

Good morning Laker Nation,

Do not despair. This team can still go all the way. What? you say. Yes, I still believe. From the cloud of vodka I consumed to lessen my pain from the loss has come clarity I wish to share with you this morning.

1. Remember, back in the summer, when the 50-win bandwagon was a statement of audacity? It is still possible for the members of the 55-win bandwagon can find fulfillment.

2. The team has been playing with only 3 of its true starters. That means that 40% of the starting five lately are really bench players.

3. That also means that 100% of the team's true starters were playing hurt on Friday night: Lamar, Fish, and Kobe. Despite the pinkie, the ankle, and the cut under his eye, Kobe still jacked up 53 points.

4. For all the screaming and cursing at the bench players, we forget one thing: They're supposed to come in and maintain the flow as the starters go in and out to get some rest. That's the system. If the starters can't get the game under control at the outset, it is very difficult for the bench to rotate in and be effective once the other team gets hot and sees a hoop the size of a swimming pool every time they take a shot. Worse, even our bench is depleted.

5. For all the clamoring to see Ira Newble and Coby Karl get minutes, we must remember that this is the time of year PJ normally starts to tighten his rotation. We're already seeing guys on the floor with more minutes than they might otherwise be getting. The Lakers were fortunate to get what they got from Mbenga and Mihm.

The only issue is, can this team get healthy enough by crunch time? That means more than just getting Gasol, Bynum and Ariza back in action. It has to happen in time for the Lakers to re-establish their identity as a team.

The lack of Defense and the propensity to keep shooting wild 3's are symptoms of a team playing without its key ingredients. This late in the season, the Laker opponents have had plenty of time to identify the team's weaknesses, which are magnified by all the injuries.

There is still time to restore order in the Universe. Go Lakers!

Lakers management has a problem.
Do we keep 2 small forwards who can only shoot the 3 ball (Vladimir) and pass the ball (Luke), which is only effective with a post presence or do we trade them for a small forward who can shoot when are bigs are healthy or slash to the basket when our bigs are hurt (and by the way: with the play of Luke-who can only pass-and the play of Vladimir-who can only shoot the 3-Trevor will be our starting small forward next season).
Do we re-sign 2 guards who can hit the 3 when the ball goes in (to Andrew) and out which leads to un-contested 3's, yet they are not productive when our bigs are hurt, or do we sign a guard who can hit the open shoot when our bigs are healthy or go to the basket when our bigs are down?
If the Lakers do not move Luke and Vladimir and if the Lakers make the same mistake with Jordan and Sasha that they made with Luke and Vladimir and throw money at them with new contracts, I will not watch the Lakers ever again during the regular season.
I will just wait until the play-offs arrive?
Why?
I just refuse to watch Luke/Vladimir/Jordan/Sasha being exposed when our bigs are down (and it will happen again because injuries-especially to bigs-is just part of the game).
I want players who can play with a big men, yet are go enough to play small ball for a couple of weeks when our bigs are down.
After the past two loses, I have had enough.
I went through this 05-06 and 06-07.
And I am done.
I will not watch another Lakers game until Andrew and Trevor come back.
Pathetic.

As the game was coming to an end, the camera caught Sasha messing around with his hair.
Stu Lance then state, "go ahead, Sasha, fit your hair."
I know this might sound stupid (and come off as being ticky tack), but Sasha's beauty moment symbolizes the Lakers: a bunch of L.A. pretty boys who are not 100 per cent focused (Luke was seen spraying on colonge during his post game interview after the Bobcat lose).
And when I see TMZ.COM clips of them going out partying this late into the season, I really feel this team just is not there mentally.
And for those who think we will be o.k. when Andrew, Pau, Trevor and Chris returs, keep dreaming (see how off Chris looked in just 5 minutes of play; there will not be enough time to incorporate our returning players, especially if they return at play-off time).
If the Lakers are emliminated in the first round, this will be the most painful play-off in Lakers history.
And I can guarantee you this: Kobe will speak to management about certain player not deserving to benefit from a healthy Andrew and Pau and Trevor if they are not willing to play when they are hurt (trust me: behind closed doors, Kobe will push for the trading of Luke and Vladimir and the release of Jordan and Sasha; he will not want those four players to enjoy the return of our bigs since they all played horribly when our bigs were hurt).
The good thing about our injuries: certain players are being exposed (and that's a good thing).

Phil Jackson and Luke Walton have to gooooooooooo!

AK or BK,
With all the problems we've been having covering the 3 spot(Wallace & Gay) lately, why hasn't Phil played Newble. I've watched him so i know he's a better on ball defender than Luke. Luke simply is to slow and not physical enough for those guys. Newble would bring some energy. I'm troubled by Fish's injury b/c Farmar seems to be an one way player, so does Sasha.

I don't know. Maybe all the injuries, how banged up the majority of the team is... maybe it's getting to the guys. Also, it could be the intensity of the Race for the West. But losing 3 straight home games, 2 of which were to the bottom of the barrel, is virtually inexcusable. *facepalm* The only bright spot (not KB's 53 cause the rest of the purple & gold didn't do much to help) was Chris Mihm's return. Of course he didn't do much in the 5 mins he played but at least he's available.

I want to know why Vlad didnt play at all in the fourth? Again bad coaching by Phil, they were up when he left and he had the second most points on the team up to that point, and he was playing decent D no matter what any one syas compared to what happened after that. He hashad a couple of big shots at the end of games also why wasnt he in for the last second shot or for the last couple of plays, instead each play resulted in an Odom 3 pointer, Phil Jackson needs to show confidence in Vlad.

I don't think fatigue is the reason. These guys are paid millions except for Mbenga and Coby Karl. And they are the best conditioned athletes in the world with all the modern facilties they had. And it's their job and theirs is the most easiest job in the world. Imagine they have to run and shoot for only 3hrs and they get paid millions like Luke Walton win or lose. or Like Ira Newble sitting on the bench but getting paid more than the average worker gets. Its better to give those money to our soldiers and healthcare workers who are working so hard just to feed their families.

We are seeing a breakdown in team morale. The primary culprit is the rash of injuries, most recently Fish. But another cause of the current malaise has been the mental aspect of the game. The complacency and laissez faire attitude that were apparent on-court is disappointing and quite destructive at this juncture of the season when the team instead should be peaking as they head into the playoffs. The laziness on defense is the most glaring deficiency. Offense may not be there some nights, but there's no excuse for the lack of effort on defense. Second chance scoring, points in the paint, put backs off offensive rebounds all by the opposing teams are common traits found in many Laker losses and close wins. As emphasized a few weeks previously my main concern was how well the team maintains its focus and energy. Apparently not much, judging by losses to cellar dwellers and non-playoff teams. Injuries is valid excuse but the laziness is not.

Have I not been telling guys like LongTimeLakerFan, Rick Friedman, LakerTom, and everyone that this Fish/Sasha/Farmar/RAdmanovic 3pt thing is ridiculous.

That they are shooting with an unconscious heart. That they will shoot you in/out of games and that this is the heart of why we cant win?

Well most of you bloggers, commended LTLF for coming to the defense of Sasha. See, he's really a good player, shoots a great% from 3 and he is really valuable! And you know what, So is Farmar!

I think you guys know the answer now. When you give guys like this too many minutes their true colors shine. If you actually watch the games, then you already knew this. You already knew Sasha can make shots, but 9 times out of 10 he knows he's going to shoot it before he gets the rock. Open or not it's going up. And a lot of times rushed and early in the shot clock. What is this guy, in middle school or something?

For some reason, Farmar decided he wanted to become a 3pt shooter too. I think it was because he got a lot of props for scoring early in the season. NOW, Farmar chucks up 3 after 3 when he gets in the game.

The worst part is, neither Sasha or Farmar play good on-ball D! Sasha is pesky, but not good. Anyone quick is going right by him. Farmar has no excuse for not at least being better on D.

So in conclusion, I want an apology/affirmation from all you bloggers including LTLF , Rick, and whoever who argued with me this the last few days.

Can you see now? Can you see why I get so angry with Sasha and Farmar in particular? Can you now agree that the stats you show are skewed because they are not with these backups playing big minutes? Put these guys in the game without a post player or with free reign and they will shoot you in a game or shoot you out of game. And same for Luke except he will pass you in a game or dumb pass you out of it.

This is ridiculous and exactly why Kobe wanted to leave the Lakers. The Bench Mob/Role Mob is just not that good when Bynum or Gasol is out. We still need some serious upgrades in PLAY or upgrades in PLAYERS if these guys dont get it and get it fast.

Injuries happen. So you have to have players who can step in and play solidly.... We dont...

No D, no intensity, no focus, no inside play, nobody running the offense, NO WIN.

Unacceptable effort from a team that should have put this game away early, and there can be no excuses about being tired or undermanned against the Memphises and Charlottes of the league if we expect to go anyhwhere in the playoffs.

Better get it in gear quickly, guys or we're gomma be talking about next year way too soon!

Don't know what can be said except ... the cavalry is coming ... the cavalry is coming. Get your asses in there Pau and AB.

The panic in the Laker blogger folks shows real weakness the minute something goes wrong with your beloved team the cannibals start eating each others remains castigating each other and the Laker players for not coming up and meeting the challenge. This is why your ilk the ~Laker Nation~ is so hated and despised around the world is because of your spoiled and impediment nature towards your team ,it borders on the ridiculous and ludicroius.Maybe it is the year round heat or basking in the liberal bastion of Los Angele's that makes the laker ilk so weak. I will pass you on a tip instead of cannibalising your players like Walton Sasha,Vlade,Lamar the whole Laker team rally around instead of crucifying.

Let's just say that with Phoenix about to pass us on the left that was the rock bottom of this season.

The Lakers are not, and will not be a healthy bunch in the playoffs. That is more than cause for concern. Overall the future is blindingly bright, but this year is banged and bruised. Adjust expectations accordingly.

I think you're being too harsh expecting the Lakers to win these games, especially last night's contest.

These teams are doing what they're supposed to, coming in and taking advantage of a SEVERELY depleted squad by working us over in the paint and shutting down everyone but Kobe.

Granted, these are bad teams, but we're playing with our 3rd stringers as starters and a guy in Mbenga who wasn't even on a team at all until a month or so ago. I don't really expect to be able to beat anybody with our current "lineup" (if you can call it that), especially with all the injuries and illness they're going through. Not when the teams you're playing are close to 100% healthy and have several large bodies to put on the court.

I knew Kobe would talk after he has a good game....How come he didnt call the time out?? He's the leader and anyone on the court can call it???

Of couse Kobe didnt look frustrated after the game...he had a good game.If he's the leader how come he didnt post up and tell his supporting cast to stop jacking up 3's???

Good morning Laker fans,

Just finished cleaning my house after trashing because of last night's game, LOL. Time to move on and trust that things will get better. Kobe post game interview was encouraging. Go Lakers!!!

Energy was definitely a problem in each of the past two games. We've seen this team rotate and show hard on pick and rolls in the past. Heck, we only have to go back a week to our wins over Utah, Dallas and Monday against Golden State. In the first two games we executed on both sides of the ball.

I don't know WHAT to think about that debacle. They better light some incense or bang the drum or go on a bonding field trip or SOMETHING because this is really the wrong time of year to revert to last season's form.

Okay, before some person tries to press my easily pressed buttons and calls me a Troll (Rick Friedman--By the way, when I get back to L.A., I am personally coming to your front door and having words with you!), let me make some things clear.

1. We are making the playoffs.
2. This is still my favorite team since Showtime.
3. We will reach AT LEAST the Western Conference Finals this year.
4. The sky isn't falling.

That much said, if I was Phil Jackson and the Lakers coashing staff, I'd be PISSED right now. Laker Nation has a right to be angry right now.

Why? Two STUPID losses. Just stupid.

People call Kobe arrogant. Well for the past couple games Sasha and Farmar have been arrogant. Hucking up threes like they're about to be banned. Just stupid.

Yeah, I know, if you're a shooter you think you're going to make every shot, but the truth of the matter is that you won't! If you're shot's aren't falling, personally, I don't find much valor in constantly forcing the issue when you have other players on your team who you could the pass the ball to for a higher percentage shot.

Think about it. Other teams are picking up on this.

In about six, maybe seven losses this year, the other team simply did not guard the perimeter, but guarded the paint. As a result, we just hucked up threes like we were Indiana during the Reggie Miller era. (WE ARE NOT INDIANA DURING THE REGGIE MILLER ERA!)

And the other team attacked the rim.

We lost everyone of those games.

That's the game strategy against the Lakers.

Attack the rim. Defend the paint. Let them have the easy outside shot.

You leave Farmar, Fisher, Sasha, Rad Vlad, even Lamar wide open on the perimeter and they'll immediately huck up a three, even if we need to use up the clock. I don't get it.

Do these guys have so kind of post-practice HORSE competition going on, so it's become ingrained in them that they have to take the difficult shot to win? It seems like it.

Because they're not thinking.

That's like seven games we've lost this year because our "shooters" are being arrogant and stupid and not using their teammates.

The last two losses were inexcusable. Everyone except Koby, Braveheart, and The Banger should apologize to Laker Nation because they've let us down. We're in a tight run for the playoffs (a historically tight run) and they've let their arrogance lose two easy victories. Just plain stupid.

{Angry.}

The good...

It is GREAT that Chris Mihm has back because the other side of the coin is that we have been beaten in the paint (as well as beating ourselves on their perimeter). Mihm's not the greatest defender, but he can block shots. As soon as Kung-Pau is back, having three centers and being able to push Braveheart back to power forward makes a huge difference. That'll be enough for us to win games even when our shooters arrogance tells them "I know if missed six in a row and we're down by five BUT I CAN MAKE THIS SHOT!"

[PASS THE BALL OR ATTACK THE RIM YOU HYPNOTIZED MORON! URGH!]

As ironic as it seems, Kobe needs to have a talk with these guys. Truth be told, Kobe could have had 70 points last night (and we would have won the game), but he chose to be a model instead and distributed the ball more in the second half. Farmar and Sasha need to follow that model.

You can't be taking that many three point shots, especially when the game is not flowing your way.

Last night was like watching the pathetic gambler at the roulette table in Vegas.

"If I just take one more three, I'll get it all back. Just one more three!"

Tablemaster: "Green! Zero! Everybody loses!"

"NOOOO!!!!"

Exactly, Sasha.

That's just what I was feeling last night.

You and Farmar need to get ahold of yourselves.

GO LAKERS!

Wow losing to two bad teams and sliting with a 8th seed, looks like Phils lakers i sure Jeannie will get him some more money for the playoffs. Hay if the lakes don't get it if they don't get to aleast 51 they are a lottery team, so they better put it back together or humpty dumpty will never get back on the wall.

LTLF,
Excellent post.

Well, Kobe's critics are out in force after the loss. One guy
(toshiba) calls him a ball hog, and another guy (Jeffs Aho)
blames him for not shooting enough in the 4th quarter.

So what would one of you guys do if...

1. You're missing your starting Center

2. You're missing your 2nd highest scorer

3. Your starting PF (filling in for your 2nd highest scorer) has the flu

4. Your starting point guard has a torn tendon in his foot

5. Your team has just shown that even without problems
3 & 4, they're capable of losing to a bad team at home

The correct answer to this problem is, you try to score more
to make up for losses #1, #2, #3, and #4. And that's what
Kobe did in the first half. He went out and carried the team
on his back.

And then late in the game, when Memphis decided to double
and triple Kobe as soon as he touched the ball, he didn't
force up shots over 3 guys, he passed to his teammates
and for the most part his teammates let him down.

And for people (like Jeffs Aho) that want to say that if Kobe
had just played a normal game and kept feeding his teammates,
they would have "had a better shooting rhythm" and would
have thus shot better, I suggest you go back and watch
Wednesday's game. That's EXACTLY what Kobe did on
Wednesday - 22 shots is about his average - but Kobe
got 1-for-7 from Rad, 2-for-7 from Fisher, 4-for-10 from
Turiaf, and 4-for-11 from Vujacic.

When Kobe "trusted in his teammates" in the previous game,
the Lakers lost by 13. When Kobe took more of the offense
upon himself last night, they lost by 3. And they were
mostly leading or tied in the 3rd until Kobe sat down with
2:47 in the 3rd. That 2:47 is when the reserves went
cold and repeatedly didn't get back on defense, and Memphis
built up a 9 point lead, which they would never fully give
back.

So don't blame Kobe for this loss. Point the finger at Odom
(though he was sick) and Turiaf (playing out of position
against a 7-footer - Ronny made Darko look like a star)
and Fisher (injured foot) and to a lesser extent Sasha
who overextended himself trying to shoot the team back
into the game (which he failed at).

Where all all of the fans who stated " the Rockets won 22 in a row, but they were not playing good teams?" Silence speaks volumes.

The panic in the Laker blogger folks shows real weakness the minute something goes wrong with your beloved team the cannibals start eating each others remains castigating each other and the Laker players for not coming up and meeting the challenge. This is why your ilk the ~Laker Nation~ is so hated and despised around the world is because of your spoiled and impediment nature towards your team ,it borders on the ridiculous and ludicroius.Maybe it is the year round heat or basking in the liberal bastion of Los Angele's that makes the laker ilk so weak. steve nash,

Shut up wall-eyed Canuck!

We just lost to Memphis at home!

It's not a matter of losing faith in our team, it's a matter of disgust at a momentary lapse of sanity in our team play.

By the way, I cannot wait to play the Suns in the playoffs.

GO LAKERS!

Korey,

Farmar and Sasha are role players, they're not expected to be able to play big minutes against starters and be successful more times than not. If Sasha and Farmar could do it consistently they wouldn't be role players, they'd be star players.

Good Morning Charles--Good Morning Everyone....

Well that game stunk up my living room.....

Our offense is looking so predicatible--one pass and shoot a three.....what happened to the crisp movement offense we used against Utah last week?????? We had no inside game what so ever---and even though our centers are out or so that's really no excuse.....

WE RAN 1 PICK AND ROLL LAST NIGHT--!!! Has Jackson ever heard of that play????? Someone send him some video / coaching book that shows how it is done---could be a play that might help us not shoot so many three's and break done a defense or two.....

I guess I didn't realize that the Grizzlies were the defensive jaugernaut of the league.....

Our defense is non existent at best----WTF??? Where is the effort????

Puke--you with the "high basketball IQ"---CALL THE FRICKIN' TIME OUT!!!---Can we please NEVER refer to Puke as having that elusive attribute ever again please?

and that stack play AGAIN???? Come on Jackson I refuse to watch that "play" ever again.....

Positives For Puke--he made a couple shots---only 36 years left on his contract.....

It's too bad to see this team return to last year's habit of losing to the bottom feeders of the league---thought that was behind us---definitly a bad time of the year to revisit last year's glories....

As much as it pains to say it, those jerks from Boston are probably going to win it all this year which will rip away some more of my heart and soul---they look good---too good---I hate Herman Munster and hope he is tarred and feathered by Timberwolf fans (if there are indeed any left).....

DESPITE THIS LOW POINT IN THE SEASON---IT IS STILL A GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

Some Musings:

1. Are the Lakers tanking games? Is it a coincidence that if the playoffs were played today, Lakers will be facing the Suns?

2. Is Jackson and Kobe playing some head games again? "Uncoachable"?

3. Is Cleamons a good defensive coach? Why does screen/roll or pick /roll seems unsolvable to him? Why is defense so much an issue for the Lakers?

4. Should the Lakers have taken a defensive point guard instead of a defensive small forward(Newble)?

5. Should disgusted fans stop seeing the games altogether? Should the fans be desperate?

6. What's with these injuries? Are the players not sufficiently conditioned for a season of games?

7. How come the issue of Kobe overshooting/ball hogging versus carrying the team/doing what the team needs is a recurring one?

8. Why is that 50th win so elusive?

9. Why do I feel so bad when the Lakers lose?

10. Is the world round or flat? Now, I'm losing it.

I need my prozac.

Korey,

Read my response to your ridiculous request for an apology above.

One note to add...

>>>The Bench Mob/Role Mob is just not that good when
>>>Bynum or Gasol is out.

No. Properly, the Bench Mob is not that good when Bynum
AND Gasol are out AND Odom and Turiaf don't pick up any
of the slack. The last two games were not "Bynum OR
Gasol out". They were "Bynum AND Gasol out and Odom
and Turiaf shooting a combined 15 for 37 with a lot of
bricked layups and dunks.

Compare these last two games to the Dallas and Utah
games. It's not Farmar and Vujacic and Luke who let
the team down. It's Odom shooting 1 for 7 and Ronny
bricking layups and dunks and going 3 for 10.

So if you want to rephrase your statement that the Bench
mob aren't that good when EVERY LAKER POST PLAYER
EITHER DOESN'T PLAY OR SUCKS, then yes, I'll agree with
you. Add effective play by any two of Gasol, Bynum, Odom,
or Turiaf, and the bench mob play the roles they are
supposed to play and are very good at it.

Morning guys,

Can't help but feel bad. This is the wrong time for this type of play against bottom feeders. But today is a new day,and tomorrow we have a brand new game.

Repost:

Man we defeated Two Teams with with better records than the Bobcats and the Grizzlies. (Utah and Dallas) It has to be a motivational issue with the coaching staff. PJ, I have defended you before but is it a non-chalant approach? This is not the early 2000's Lakers team...

Steve Nash -

Hey gramps, Rondo broke your ankles the other night. Haha!
