Quick impressions

pm
I wrote earlier today (in the Question of the Day) that I wouldn't read too much into the result of tonight's game- a strong 105-90 win over the Nets in Joyzey, nor the performance of Pau Gasol in his purple and gold debut. I didn't say that I wouldn't make some observations, though. We'll get into more of this in tomorrow's broadcast of Purple, Gold, and Blue, at 11:00 am (Kurt Helin from Forum Blue and Gold will be our guest). Just a few, off the cuff thoughts (i.e., don't get on me for not mentioning certain things...)
- This has the potential to be very, very good.
- The spacing offensively was outstanding, which is particularly impressive given Gasol's very shallow knowledge of the offense. The Lakers recorded 27 assists on 38 buckets, a very nice number, particularly on the road, where dimes are a little harder to come by. With Gasol in the lineup, they have a ton of guys who move the ball well, and any extra room on the court will improve the work of the weaker passers, too.
- Pau's face up game should mesh very nicely with a healthy Bynum, a hi-lo thing that could be awful constructive.
- If the ball movement can stay effective, guys on the perimeter are going to get a TON of clean looks. If I'm Rad, Sasha, and Farmar, I'm a very happy camper.
- Once Drew returns, the Lakers have the potential to be monsters on the glass. And along those lines, personally I found LO's performance tonight to be very encouraging. If this is what they'll get out of him going forward, it'll be great. He influenced the game in a big way, but didn't have to score. 14/15/5, off 13 FTs. Anytime he gets to the line 13 times, that's good.
- By the way, the Lakers won by 15, and Kobe scored six points. Yeah, the Nets suck- really, they suck- but still, how often does that happen?
Plenty more tomorrow.

Shaq to Phoenix leaves me scratching my head.
Just more chances for Bynum to dunk on Shaq.
I do like it when these trades happen so we can answer some questions, like: will Marion be just as good independent of Steve Nash? Can Steve Nash make Shaq a better player? Inquiring minds want to know.

so much of this depends on how motivated shaq is to win...he obviously tried harder in his first 2yrs in miami and won them a championship..(obviously wade did the heavy lifting) but shaq contributed to the W's...
he "could" try to turn it on....in april/may agst the lakers and spurs --just outta spite....
i hope not...but i wouldnt put it past him...he's won 4 rings...he's not a complete idiot...as we try to make him out to be...

Riley dodged a bullet with this one.
Dumping all those pounds and salary before it killed his franchise is the luck of the Irish squared.

I suggested that the Lakers should trade Kwame for Marion a while back since the Suns need a defensive presence at the 5. Now, the Suns are trading Marion for an injured 35 year old center who makes 20 mil a year. Shaq has never been a committed guy on defense, so why is he going to make a difference now? Plus, no way can Shaq keep up with that offense. This is comedy waiting to happen. I love it. There are many delusional Suns fans on the ESPN boards saying that we should be scared. Clearly, the SUNFLOWERS are scared and have made a panic move.
Posted by: fkillah | February 05, 2008 at 11:28 PM
dave m,
Marion does everything Shaq does but better. And he does everything the Suns need him to do. The Suns say they're getting Shaq for D, when he's not a defensive presence. He can't stay out of foul trouble. Like I wrote earlier he's had at least 4 fouls in 21 of his 32 games. And the Suns just gave away their best perimeter defender in Marion. Shaq can't move and protect the rim so guys will be flying through the lane and all he can do is reach and grab and pick up fouls.
He also can't shoot free throws so they'll go from being one of the best free throw shooting teams to an average one.
The Suns have just gotten worse in several areas. I'm thrilled!

Watching the game tonight against the Nets there's no doubt that Triangle offense suits Pau's game and skills and vice versa. No wonder both PJ and Tex were so high on the acquisition. Not to beat a dead horse, but with Pau in the middle the offense will flow and things will easier on everyone as it was before Andrew got injured. With Kwame in the middle, it was way too taxing on Kobe night in and night out to score and put enormous pressure on LO to be the second option. I don't recall any past championship teams that didn't have a big that didn't contribute somehow on the offensive end. What's even more dangerous is that I believe we have an inspired and motivated Pau Gasol playing for us.
I hope Shaq plays with the Suns and plays well because I want the Lakers to beat teams when they're at their best which will make it that more sweeter should we go all the way. Phoenix is taking a big risk and seem desperate because they're window is closing. I don't think D'Antoni will remain the Coach if the deal for Shaq doesn't work out.
Posted by: Nemaia Faletogo | February 05, 2008 at 11:32 PM
I went over to read the Phoenix fan's perspective, and I was surprised to see very little outrage over the trade.
This worries me a little bit. Not much, just a little.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | February 05, 2008 at 11:35 PM
I feel like Shaq's only purpose is to be a goon to Andrew Bynum and the Lakers.
There really is no reason to make this trade other than the Lakers and maybe the Spurs. Theres still a shot that Bynum could struggle against Shaq due to his size and playoff experience. Im not saying tha Shaq out plays Bynum...but he could cancel out Drew coming back from injury. That matches up Pau v.s. Amare and Kobe v.s. Nash. That essentially puts the onus on Lamar Odom to outplay somebody to win...hmmm..
I still the think the Lakers take the series beacuse of the deep bench..put it makes it interesting.
Either way...as predicted the rest of the WC freaked because the Lakers got Pau. Still, Bynum is the wild card. If he can came back to full strength by the end of the season and before the playoffs...I think the Lakers are the favorites.

Prince,
"i swear to god my girlfriend just said the exact same thing. "whats wrong with you, why do you look so confused?" i try to explain it to her and she says " well thats good then". my response is "am i missing something? is this somehow a genius move and my tiny mind can't understand it or is it really as silly and knee-jerk as it seems"
Exactly! There's a part of me that's frustrated over not being able to figure out why Phoenix thinks this can work. That I can't figure out how to make 1+1=3 is somehow making me feel like the idiot. And it's pissing me off. haha

dave m,
This trade is clearly a desperation move on the Suns part. You actually think that Fat Daddy can keep up with an up tempo offense? Do you think that Shaq will be happy being a defensive enforcer instead of being the second or third option on offense? His career is shot and he will likely play only 20 games this season. Plus, it is very conceivable that Shaq will go down with an injury during the playoffs, what then?
Lastly, do you think a front line of Shaq, Diaw, and Amare is better than Bynum, Gasol, Odom? Please.
Posted by: fkillah | February 05, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Yahoo is reporting that Smush may be included in the Shaq trade. Imagine that! ROTFL!
It's a comedy beyond a Laker fan's wildest dreams.
Smush's matador defense plus Shaq's no D on pick-n-roll...I can't wait for the Lakers to pick the Suns apart.

Look at the picture of Shaq. That's kind of messed up, lol!

AK,
Just wondering, when does the Nash contract expire? How about the Shaq contract? Okay, how about the Lebron contract? ..... humm
Is it possible the Suns are looking for some huge expiring $$$ that will coincide with certain free agents down the road? Hard to figure they'd give up on the next couple years in a scheme to go after LB. Something is up because Shaq to Suns makes no sense.
That trade would be good for the Lakers.
Posted by: LakerLarry | February 05, 2008 at 11:40 PM
After reading some other reports, it does seem better that Shaq went to the Suns as opposed to the Mavs.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | February 05, 2008 at 11:40 PM
Andrew T,
Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm very happy about it. My initial reaction when this came up (I believe it was during the "Real Time" Game thread) was "I hope they do it, because it makes Phoenix much worse." But mind you, that was also when I didn't think it would actually happen, because it was too ridiculous.
I'm still excited, but I think the confusion is preventing me from feeling truly elated. Right now, I feel like I did when I walked out of that George Clooney flick, "Syrianna." Very interesting movie and I enjoyed it, but not the easiest plot in the world to follow.
But assuming I eventually do fall asleep, I should feel much more giddy about it in the morning. haha

I think the Suns realize they must win now.Nash is 34 and won't be the best pg much longer.Teams like the Lakers,Blazers, and Jazz soon will be much better than Phoenix and San Antonio.Picking up Shaq proves it is now or never for them.Hopefully it is never.I would hate to see Shaq win a ring on 3 different teams.I don't know who will win this year but it should be great to watch.

Charles can put Shaq in his faves now! Pookie is not going to be happy, but he'll be when he sees how athletic Shawn Marion is!

I hear more and more speculation what Bunym 's injury is in fact a lot worse. Is it true ? It there any way to find out ?
Posted by: novolakers | February 05, 2008 at 11:54 PM
I'm sorry, but WHAT IS GOING ON?! Why would the fastest team in the NBA thats currently sitting atop the West, make what seems like a panic-y trade, for one of the slowest players in the game? Not to mention he has a bad hip and bad knees and basically bad joints altogether. You've all seen his Icy Hot commercials!
Posted by: DavyJonze | February 05, 2008 at 11:56 PM
AK,
My head's spinning, too! You found someone to put up with you for a year and a half? j/k
Posted by: mel | February 06, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Xodus - sorry to disagree but Marion and Shaq have totally different games, not to mention different positions. This isn't about comparing the two of them, it's about the Suns are trying to add a different type of low post presence and whether it will work or not.
fkillah - I'm not saying they'll have a better front line than us. I'm saying that we shouldn't summarily dismiss what this could bring them. We do that at our own peril. "Oh please" youself pal.
Posted by: dave m | February 06, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Mel,
Oh, my head should be spinning about that, for sure. But unlike the Shaq deal, I just try not to think about it too much. haha

Where are you hearing these things? Ric Bucher? Haha. He'll be fine.
Posted by: fkillah | February 06, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Wow this is a fun lineup for Phil. I bet he must be all giddy inside like a little school girl. The possible combinations are just mind boggling. I would go with a different lineup then Phil. I would be different just to prove a few theories about the Triple Post offense when Drew returns (hint: Odom would come off the bench and the Machine would start).

This PHX/MIA trade should now place Pat Riley far out in front in the race for the Executive of the Year award. He sure gets my vote. I was LMAO hysterically when I saw the bullet on the 4 letter network. I thought Mitch had it locked up, but Pat has blown him away with this one.

Shaq to Nash-
"um i bbeieve you have my basketball"
Posted by: | February 06, 2008 at 12:06 AM
Here's the quick breakdown.
The last thing the Suns should do is slow their offense down. In fact, they should speed it up. Lots of teams this year have shown that they can play the Sun’s pace and even exceed it. Think the Lakers when Bynum was in the game. We basically ran almost at their pace, got as many easy basket as they did, except we killed them on rebounds and defense.
Take away the Suns speed and high powered offense and their weaknesses become more apparent. They don’t play bad defense because they put up 110 points, but slow it down and that defense becomes questionable. Don't forget, Marion rebounds and aside from muscling players plays better defense than Shaq.
This deal is such a good thing for the Lakers. It shouldn't even be compared to the Gasol trade. We traded for a seven footer with All-Star talent and didn’t even give up any one of our TOP TEN players.
The Suns are going to trade their 2nd or 3rd best player for a guy who plays limited minutes, doesn’t fit into their system, and might actually be worse.
As a Laker fan, I approve this trade.
Posted by: AndrewT | February 06, 2008 at 12:11 AM
Random thoughts from a discombobulated mind...
1) Steve Kerr didn't get pushed into this if (as reported) D'Antoni is not up to speed on this deal.
2) If he is (thus) pulling the strings here, D'Antoni will likely be out unless he can do what coaches always must do: make lemonade with the parts that they've got.
3) Kerr is much too smart for this to be the final act. Since Kerr is not stupid, either the Shaq rumors are not true (but it seems that they are) so, more likely, he has another deal in mind. Smush for RonRon, Maloofs? Anyway -- yeah this seems panicky, but this can't be the only move to get to check-mate. There has to be one more.
We can stay (nervously) guessing up to the trade deadline.

You're forgetting one thing-this will be a complete change for the suns. In midseason they're making a move that will entirely change how they play. Now they only have half a season to incorporate Shaq, figure out an offensive and defensive system that will work with him in the lineup (run and gun won't work for Shaq), get their chemistry down, learn each others habits, etc. I just don't see that happening b4 the playoffs. While Shaq MIGHT bring them an inside presence to challenge Duncan and Bynum, incorporating him might cost the Suns this season.

Now the suns have to slow it down which magnifies Nash's deficiencies in the half court, he doesnt play defense and they only got Stat running the wing on the fastbreak

OHOH Shaq is back. That fat bastard is back in the West. Oh no!!! J/k. No worries. Weird trade. Don't really know what to think of it yet. If he's not really injured then I think it will be a tremendous upgrade but the team will have to play a different style with him in there. Oh boy. I do think they had to do this move in order to compete with us in the playoffs. It's a huge gamble that actually had to be made if you really sit and think about it. There was no way they could have beaten us in a series when Drew returns from his knee injury. At least now they have a chance of winning a playoff game or two if Shaq can 90 % healthy. Wow what to think?
Posted by: johnny | February 06, 2008 at 12:19 AM
I hope this makes the Suns a better team. Lakers meet them in the WCF and spank them with our talented twin towers.
Lakers meets Celtics in the NBA Finals!
Lakers are World Champions!
I believe KOBE, BYNUM, GASOL and a deep bench is unstoppable. The "big difference" is the young Bynum!
NBA RIVALRY is BACK on ABC (national TV)! The whole world gets to watch our Lakers perform in the biggest stage. Lakers should sign up SunYue, so the 200 million viewers from China can be added. It beats the superbowl right away!
Bynum 7' 1 = Jabbar 7'2
Gasol 7'0 = Thompson 6'11
Odom 6'11 = Worthy 6'9
Ariza 6'8 =Cooper 6'6
Bryant 6'6 =Magic 6'9
This line up is a complete package of offense, defense, length, athletic abilty and talent.

He doesnt only improve the LAKERS but also destroyes the SUNS by causing them to panic and make this trade.

Shaq to PX?
Suns trying to do a '71 Lakers? Wilt and Happy rebounded and started the break. Coming down for the offence was optional for Wilt and only if the break was stopped.
Posted by: p ang | February 06, 2008 at 12:21 AM
dave m,
This is going to bring us some good times, like watching a bulldog trying to keep up with some rats. Your totally missing out on what the whole point of this trade is about. Phoenix is small and they wanted to move Amare to the four and get a big center to clog up the lane and play defense (aka-getting a bigger, better front line). Problem is, Shaq, a guy who has historically picked his spots on defense, can't do that anymore. At the same time, they are going to lose out on a great all around player in Shawn Marion. Terrible trade.
Posted by: fkillah | February 06, 2008 at 12:23 AM
t_sensei
Good point, if this trade is just a precursor to something Kerr has on the table it might not end up looking so bad; however, for a team that was just a few mistakes away from the finals last year and has the best record in the west so far, it seems a bit much to be tinkering with you're team to this level. Remember the Lakers didn't give up any of their "core" players to get Gasol. The only other reason I can see for this (other than another deal Kerr might have on the table) is something internally for the Suns. We all know Marion wasn't happy and wanted a trade, but if that's the case they could have done better than Shaq.

I know this is yesterday's news now, but it still bugs me... do people really think Kwame was not one of our top TEN players? Behind Walton and Vlad Rad? Really??
Posted by: McGarnagle | February 06, 2008 at 12:26 AM
FREAKING SHAQ, HE STILL HAS LIFE AFTER DEATH. What a story. This year so far has been a year of the resurected life of the center. I feel confident that we can still beat the Suns. But man why can't those Suns just concede and let us meet the Celtics in the Finals. Hate their guts. They just want to get in our way because they hate the fact that we are better this year than the previous 3 years. Hey Kobe there is a god for Shaquile too I guess. LOL.
Posted by: johnny | February 06, 2008 at 12:27 AM
Well of course Nash will make Shaq better. MUCH MUCH BETTER. Just imagine how much better he could make Lamar, Kobe, and Gasol. Of course this is only possible if Shaq is healthy which I really believe he will be. He may be a bit slower or whatever. He's still only 35. Malone, Mourning and Kareem played into their 40's. You can't deny a big body. He can be effective if he's at least 90% healthy. I'm not a doctor but something tells me that he will be ready for the playoffs. WOW!!! I can't wait. I'm salivating right now like a famished little pup. I think this makes them somewhat of bigger threat than before. I don't think that they can withstand a lineup of Drew, Gasol, Kobe, Lamar, and Fisher. That's too too deep.

What may have been true 4 or 5 years ago is not true anymore -- the new canard that Shaq rounds into shape come playoff time.
I do recall that he showed a surprising level of fitness for almost the entire 2004 - 2005 season but he ran on fumes during the playoff of that same season.
In the 2005 - 2006 season, meanwhile, he reverted to his practice of loafing about during the regular season and work into his peak during the playoffs yet again. Championship notwithstanding, he was not the fearsome playoff performer that we saw during his Laker days (there was a compelling reason why Wade was awarded the playoff MVP trophy, as it were). It was starting to become apparent that the Shaq that Shaq himself thought can be summoned according to his will now only exists in his ego, memories, and record books.
The mind may be willing but the body has clearly become very weak even for a man of his considerable gifts.
Last season and the current one really are but a continuation of his declining contributions. This decline is not only limited with respect to his playing skills but, even more tellingly, his physical state.
Shaq may only be 35 years old or so but the poor bastard put in almost 15 years of pro ball at its highest level while playing the game's most rugged position.
A large number of people think that the man can still "turn it on" for the playoffs when, sadly, he hasn't been able to produce anything close to what we expect him to do since the first part of the 2004 playoffs.
Still, it takes a whole team to win a championship but, for those who think Shaq can help bring one, Shaq is the proverbial last bullet in the clip that is largely more likely to miss than to hit.

Beezy - I hear what you're saying but I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I'd rather deal with the Sun's pure run and gun style than a hybrid that includes a motivated Shaq in the middle. But anyway, I'll just leave it alone for now... at the end of the day I have faith in our guys, we've got a seriously rocking team.

PANIC attack - it's when people make their worse decisions: The bottom-line reason Suns would do this trade (SM for Shaq) is because they know that the Lakers is the new team-to-beat in the Western Conference and they know they can't beat the Lakers with their current line-up. With Drew being healthy and with the new 7ft weapon, Pau, added in the Lakers line-up, who'd not panic? GO LAKERS!!

"So, how long til the cockaroaches come out and say Gasol is better than Kobe."
so, HELLO from spain (EUROPE)
Have no fear, man, i won´t say that gasol is better than kobe cause it´s false. BUt gasol have done this numbers during 7 years in memphis without teammates. He played all star, won the fiba world championship and won rookie of the year without kobe.
Gasol will be better with kobe, of course, as well as kobe can be better with pau. THIS IS A TEAM GAME.
Anyway, Pau is not the man. This is kobe´s team, we all know, and the responsabilty is over his head. But pau can help to make a champion team. He understand this game. BTW, i hope people in LA will be comprenssive with his defence game. Pau´s a really great offencer, but also an awful defender.
P.S.: I stayed wake up till 4 am watching the game!! I´m working-sleeping, lol.

Is Phoenix smokin something? What the heck were they thinking... I don't know -- I've looked at it from MANY angles.. and I still don't know...
I mean I'm glad they got worse but I mean they have no backup center.. are they going to switch styles throughout the game or let Shaq cherrypick on defense?
You can't expect 40min/game from the Diesel... so what the heck are they thinking? And they lose Marion...
My my, everyday Lakers look better and better
