Live from Staples- Lakers vs. Portland

February 26, 2008 |  7:36 pm

Nine in a row!  Nine in a row!  The fans demand nine in a row!

BK with the first quarter...

I've said it before, I'll say it again, Baba O'Reilly makes for some killer pregame intro music.  Biggest boo in the pregame intro?  For Steve Javie.  And there you have it.

FIRST QUARTER:

10:19- Two quick hoops for Aldridge, which shouldn't come as a surprise to too many people, who saw LM beat up on LA a few times last season.  He's a really, really strong young player.  There aren't a lot of guys who can handle LO's length and have some left over, but he's one

9:29- Great feed underneath from Kobe to Gasol, and the Lakers are up 6-4.

8:19- The other Blazer currently having a good start to the game tonight is Steve Blake, who has a three and two dimes.  He's a guy who has historically killed the Lakers.  If he just played the Lakers, Blake might be an HOFer some day.  As John Ireland once put it during a conversation with us, "Steve Blake was put on this earth to make the Lakers look bad."

8:03- Kobe brings the Lakers back to within one, 11-10.

5:48- The Blazers are doing a good job of getting Outlaw some space to get away from Kobe defensively.  He's been able to shake free a few times, both to get to the basket and also for a couple clean looks from outside.  They're also iso-ing Aldridge on Odom, and letting the young un use his length and size to work on LO.  17-10 Blazers coming out of the timeout.

4:30- LO misses an open jumper from short range.  They're getting some very clean looks at the hoop, but just aren't converting.  If a few of those drop, it's a tighter game.  Right now, though, the Lakers are going to have to figure out a way to stop Aldridge, who drew a second foul on LO.  That sends him to the bench, Turiaf in to replace him.

19-10 Portland.

2:30- Timeout on the floor.  Lakers down 24-12, and are generally getting out worked on the floor.  Portland is far more crisp offensively than the Lakers are defensively.  They're a step behind everything, and are running around a lot. No answers  yet  for Aldridge.  On the other end, the 35% FG number the Lakers currently sport is misleading.  They've missed a bunch of easy shots.  This is a good test for the Lakers, who haven't been behind in a game for a while.  San Antonio ended the first quarter down 16-5 last night against Atlanta, and still won by ten, I think.  Maybe eight.  Whatever.  The point is, they won, and pretty handily.

Good teams don't get all freaked out by bad play early.  There's still a lot of time to get back into the game, if they can tighten up  alittle.

Farmar in for Fish out of the TO.

Big minutes for the seconds.

:50- Farmar hits a three, a nice change from a couple trips back, when Martell Webster just posterized Sasha.  That was ugly.

END OF THE FIRST: Ronny grabs a big offensive board at the end of the quarter off a Sasha miss, and sinks the putback for a late two.  Big bucket, as it draws the Lakers back to within 10, 27-17.  Nothing to freak out about.  It's the worst quarter they''ve played in a while, probably since Atlanta.  They're really just not crisp.  A step slow defensively, the ball movement we've grown accustomed to seeing isn't quite there.   But it's one quarter, and there are three left.  A lift from the seconds at the top of the quarter--- wait, LO and Kobe will start the quarter, so it's not really the seconds.  More the 1.5s....
AK will have the Q.

SECOND QUARTER

11:49 - Jordan Farmar wastes no time hitting one from distance to make it a seven point contest.  Unfortunately, his follow up attempt 46 seconds later ain't nearly as pretty.  Nothing but air.

10:19 - Kobe does his best Peyton Manning impression, shuttling a Sergio Fernandez miss three quarters downcourt to Farmar, who just beats a streaking Blazer defender to put in a layup.  Apparently enjoying the QB work, Kobe uses the next possession to hit a streaking Ronny Turiaf under the bucket after the break.  Channing Frye clocks Ronny on the way up.  Foul called. And one converted.  Portland time out.  With barely two minutes having passed, the Lakers have cut the deficit down to four and have a decidedly purple and gold momentum in swing.

Not shockingly, this progress has coincided with a direct rise in energy.

9:32 - Unfortunately, progress may now get tested.  LO gets hit with an offensiev foul, his third whistle of the half.  That'll sit him for the rest of the half.  Pau enters the mix.   The Spaniard can barely break a sweat before his new coach picks up a T.  Me thinks he doesn't approve of all the referee attention focused on his squad.

7:45 - Steve Blake hits an inevitable three.  I say "inevitable" because the possession featured three offensive boards for the Blazers.  Give any NBA team that many tries and something will eventually go down.

7:09 - Having just set up Kobe for the triple, Farmar connect from 17-feet out.  That's a basker's dozen working for Farmar this half.  He's doing an awful lot to keep the Lakers in this contest, what with all the cold shooting and foul troubles plaguing Kobe and especially - After LO.

5:58 - Kobe skies to snatch a strong rebound under Portland's bucket, then puts up a 17-footer that touches rim... bounces... bounces... then finally gets tapped in from the left side by Pau Gasol.  Bucket well timed and seriously uplifting, both for the crowd and this team.  It not only puts the Lakers in the positive (2 points up), but lifts the spirits to set up some razzle dazzle ball movement from Farmar to Turiaf to Sasha.  The downtown shot falls.  The Lakers are now up by 5.

2:23 - Mo's swung back Portland's way care of back to back five foot hooks from LaMarcus Aldridge and additional makes from Outlaw and Blake have put the Blazers back up by 3.  With time running down on the Laker shot clock and Fish having trouble getting some space, it's looking like a lost chance to cut that newly discovered pit.  But Fish's miss gets tapped in by Gasol (who's doing great work on the glass, 8 boards this half) and it's now a one point match.

1:09 - ROnny just picked up a foul and you may notice he's talking with the refs right now.  I don't think he's actually arguing the call, but letting the officials know that Pryzbylla is hooking him under the basket in every scrum.  As someone seated right behind that goal, it's actually very blantant.

18.5 - Walton stays with Outlaw along the perimeter, but allows him too much space.  His 18 footer is good, the second consecutive possession featuring a Travis jumper gone down with Walton assigned to him.

The half ends with Portland up 51, 44.  The Lakers clawed their way back in, briefly took the lead and are by no means out of this.  Truth be told, had they not started the contest so awful, it might be a different game.  It would also be considerably different if they had Lamar on the floor, who's spent much of the half glued to the pine in foul trouble.  Odom's absence probably also goes a long way to explain why the Lakers are getting killed on the glass (24-18), allowing Portland seven offensive boards.  I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I imagine the Blazers' second chance points are considerably too high.  We'll see if they can make the adjustments in the third.  BK will supervise.

THIRD QUARTER:

Not a good start for LO, as he picks up the offensive foul with less than a minute gone.  That gives him four, and he'll have to be careful.  PJ leave shim in, though.

9:15- Jack beats Kobe off the dribble.  He's had a little trouble tonight staying in front of guys.  That, of course, gives him a lot in common with the rest of the team.  55-46 Portland.

8:150 Great pass from Kobe to Pau under the hoop for an easy dunk.  That's what the Lakers need to do- penetrate, and find the open man. The ball movementan doff ball movement hasn't been particularly good tonight.  To much catch, hold, pass.  Not enough crisp play.

6:45- Lakers down seven, now four as Sasha buries the three coming off the screen.  Portland calls timeout, up 57-53.  Very little about this game has gone the Lakers way, other than that good run from the seconds to end the first, start the second.  Still, they're only down by four halfway through the third quarter.  One good push puts them back in the lead. It doesn't like they're going to be in good form before the final buzzer.  The question is if they'll win anyway.

To do it, they need to tighten up on the defensive glass, and find a way to generate better looks.  The offense has been as stagnant tonight as it's been in a long time.  Overall, they're getting beat up on the glass, 29-22.  Not a good margin, especially at home.

5:40- Still no answer for Aldridge down low, as he bodies up Gasol, bounces into him a few times, then hits the right handed shot off the glass.  Aldridge has shown a lot of really solid post moves down low.  Nothing fancy, but he can use both hands, use the glass, go without it, face up, etc.

4:05- Stupid play by Kobe.  The defender got a hand on him, but not much, and to pop off like that after a potential momentum building play isn't smart.  Fish picks up a foul on the other end, and points to the screener looking for a foul.  The Lakers really aren't playing with much composure on either end.

Webster beats Kobe off a ball fake, and the Blazers are up 64-57.

1:57- Great pass by LO over the top to Gasol down low draws a foul from Pryzbilla.  That's one of the best jobs they've done getting low in a while.  There has been little aggressive cutting, aggressive passing, etc.  They're getting passes, then holding the ball.  Very little fluidity.  Since the first half, when they were in the paint a lot but missed a lot of shots, they've lost some of that attack-the-basket mentality.  Outside shooting got them back into the game, but they're close enough to work the ball low, and get into the offense.

64-59 Portland coming out of the TO.

1:37- Illegal defense called against the Lakers, and Blake gets back to the line.  He now has five points of T's.  He only averages seven a night.  Like we said before, something about the Lakers makes Blake into a superstar.

1:17- Farmar gets to the basket, and draws the and one on Rodriguez.  Good start for him coming back into the game.

:55- 65-62 Portland.

END OF THE THIRD: A great drive and dish from Kobe to Turiaf gives the Lakers a 67-65 lead heading into the fourth.  The key to the play?  Turiaf moving without the ball, diving to the hoop and following Kobe to give him an outlet.  There's been way too little of that over the course of the game. In previous games, it's seemed like every time someone was moving forward towards the basket, someone was right there with him.

The Lakers aren't playing well, but they're winning.  12 minutes to go.  AK will have the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

11:36 - Outlaw blocks Kobe's shot from 19 feet out.   I swear, that kid's got the longest arms in the entire league this side of Kevin Durant.  They are seriously long, given an even more stretched out look by some seriously narrow, wiry shoulders.  The kid is essentially a coat hanger with ridiculous athleticism.

10:30 - A 17-foot make by Bryant is gussied up by Sasha's triple from the corner.  That shot from downtown breaks a tie at 69 apiece, putting the Lakers up by 3 and prompting a Portland timeout.

8:03 - For once, Outlaw is on the defensive.  Kobe gets him off balance with a little shake and bake just inside the arc, then buries the jumper in his face.  Next possesion.  More Kobe, this time blowing past every Portland defender for the layup.  Lakers now up by 5.

6:26 - The Lakers take a cue from the Blazer blueprint.  Snag an offensive rebound and give yourself another shot at a bucket.  Pau's offensive glasswork off Sasha's downtown miss end sup in LO's hands, who whips the ball behind the arc to Farmar for the triple.  Money.  One possession, a Steve Blake brick and an LO rebound later, Farmar's good for a conventional score.  Portland takes another timeout (and is it just me, or does it feel like they've already taken about 11 this game).  L.A. now has a double digit lead (10 to be exact)

4:36 - Either there's a serious confetti malfunction going on right now or those rumors about the NBA being fixed aren't too far off.  Portland's still very much in this game with plenty of time left, yet streamers are flying around Staples.

3:05 - Nate McMillan just got tossed for busting a gasket in the ref's direction.  I guess he took offense to the confetti.

2:15 - I hate to say it, but from where I'm sitting, that block on LO looked clean.  Maybe some contact at the end, but a LOT of ball.

42.9 - The game's pretty much in hand by this point, but nobody's gonna complain about a cherry on the top three ball from Sasha.

And NOW the confetti falls in accurate and timely fashion.  It wasn't always pretty and until the closing stretches, it rarely looked secure.  But it ended up happening.  30/9/7 from Kobe lef the way for the starters, who got precious little in the way of scoring from Fish, Walton and LO (although to be fair, 11 boards from Odom certainly helped).  Bryant's cause was seriously helped, however, by the ever-steady bench.  Farmar led all pine guys with 21, but the dozen from Sasha and Ronny's eight were more than needed.  Thanks for droppung by.  More to come later.

I'd LOVE Turiuf to take a step in if hit jump shot is too long!!!

Two interesting games on the schedule tomorrow night. Phoenix at New Orleans and Detroit in Utah. I'll be watching those two games closely. On Thursday it will be Dallas against SA and the Heat against our Lakers. Lakers can widen their lead depending on what happens in those other games. Exciting times in the West!!! Go Lakers!!!

Portland again on Friday. Hopefully Nate McMillan is fixated on trying to stop Kobe again and our guys wake up and play the game from the start.

Amazing_Happens,

Cheers to Ronny!

Reminds me of the Jerry West interview from last week. You're in good company A_H!

Great play RONNY TURIAF for all the energy you bring.. Thanks JORDAN FARMAR for your STRENGTH to carry the team everytime you come off the bench. SASHA VUJACIC, I admire your fighting spirit and toughness it's the perfect compliment to Kobe's demeanor.

Overall, the three of you deserves to have your contracts exntended and hope you stay with us!

Your roles are very important to the Lakers! Just want to make sure you know you are all appreciated here in Lakerland!

Lamar plays great one game and everyone loves him. He has a sub-par game and everyone jumps on him. I don't get it. Lamar is NEVER going to be a 20-10 guy so get over that. He's one of the hardest workers on this team and is a difference maker, even if he's not scoring. Lamar needs to stay on this team.

As for Luke... I don't know, he had a good season last year. I'm guessing it'll take a summer off for him to regain focus. I think the big contract + the injury threw him off. I remember in the series against the Pistons 4 years ago, he seemed to be the only one that came to play and last year he was stroking near 40% from downtown for most of the year. I think he can regain his mojo.

And we thought we had 3rd quarter woes during the inter-AB/PG era...

"Portland was outscored 23-14 in the third quarter, the seventh time in eight games it had fewer than 20 points in that period."

Jon K we remember last three years very clearly.that is the reason we insist Luke stay out of game. Do your self a favor stop jocking Luke!!

Famar had a point to make ............Last season Jaret Jack made some silly comments about Farmar and he got served tonight..........well done Famar...............well done

"HERE'S TO RONNY TURIAF
Love to see Ronny get big playing time. PJ has got to find minutes for him, even when Bynum and Ariza are ready to play. We fans should really celebrate Ronny for the professionalism and enthusiasm he has displayed throughout his career. Through starting, to not starting, to playing as lilttle as 5 minutes in a game, Ronny always gives his best and comes to play. He's never been a distraction, a negative influence, or just anything to worry about. And the guy has skills. He's not just an energy guy. He can shoot the rock from 17 feet out. He can grab boards. He moves without the ball. He passes to the open guy."

I completely agree with you. Ronny like Sasha is developing right before our eyes. I enjoy watching these guys play!

Let's not take for granted our TCB of weaker sub 500 teams.

Case in point... Utah loses to Minnesota (111-100!) and the Clippers in one week.

It would be Armageddon on this blog if the Lakers pulled off a similar stint!

On another note, this officially closes the book on the better trade (KK versus PG).... not that it was ever open!

Wow... look at the +/- stats on both benches... that's the whole story for tonight!

http://www.nba.com/games/20080226/PORLAL/boxscore.html

come on!!! all you guys can see are the positives... don't you realize how weak they are on defense? they're lucky their shots fell... if they didn't we're done. DEFENSE = championship!!!

AK/BK,

Can you guys talk to Pau about not cutting his hair until we win the championship?

I think I saw a bit of a Samson effect tonight...

Rick Friedman,

"No one hates Luke. We just enjoy the game more when he's on the bench."

lol! So true!

In other news around the league...

how about the Shaq/Darko +/- stats?

http://www.nba.com/games/20080226/PHXMEM/boxscore.html

"I don't care who you are, that's funny!"

FIRE 32, what say you?

It's time to start a 65 game bandwagon..

BTW, it's the same bandwagon as the "34" bandwagon.

In other news around the league... check out this picture of Kyle Korver's defense!

http://www.nba.com/games/20080226/UTAMIN/recap.html

ha ha!

Jon K.
I hate to break it to ya.....but Luke has been taking Kwame's "Spot" for a while.

Luke's problem is he has no confidence in his shot. the other teams know this and they want him to shoot. At the same time they sag and they take away his real game, which is passing. He needs to get confidence shooting again, just like Sasha and Farmar, and then he will be fine.

Jon K.

One more thing. Why is it being a "Hater" to point out the obvious that Luke is not very good?

With Vlad and Ariza out, there was a "GLARING" hole at the 3. Thank God Sasha was available and Kobe to the 3 or we would of lost tonight.

wow. here we go with the LO hate. no LO we lose. end of story. nobody else was rebounding. Gasol wasn't getting it done in that dept.

WOW, the energy we brought late in the 3rd and in the 4th was amazing.. but man.. those players are GOOD.. i was wondering how would they look like next year with Oden coming back, the rivery is back.. ANYWAY.. we gave those guys so MANY offensive rebouns in the first half.. if we dont do a better job we will have a tough tough one coming up in portland.. those guys play great at home.. but our lakers have one of the best road records and most of the time they seem more focused on the road! .. great game for baby farmer.. sasha missed some open shots that he usually makes but made some big ones when it mattered, and KOBE was KOBE;) .. the only weakness i see is our penetration defence, and sometimes we sleep on rebounds, and i TRUELY believe that this is reduce more when DREWWW comes back.. I just can`t wait.. as BAD as we played if the first half we still managed to win by 13.. consider it a good sign? I GUESS SO! gooooooooo LA

Hey not the best game of the year, but after a loose first quarter where they didn't seem ready to play, they gave up only 56 points in the last 3 quarters and 32 in the second half. Very nice.

Even so, more commitment on the defensive glass would be appreciated.

GO LAKERS!!

KOBE FOR MVP!!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!!

LAKERTOM ON 96-83 WIN OVER PORTLAND . . .

My first thought when the game ended was game ball for Jordan Farmar. With the other Lakers starters other than Kobe suddenly cold, Farmar stepped up and backed Kobe’s 30-point night with 21 points of his own on 8 of 10 shooting, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. What impressed me most, however, was the way that Jordan took the ball to the hoop and didn’t back down. I don’t know if it was Kevin Ding’s inspirational article that got Jordan fired up but the Lakers really needed Farmar’s offense tonight as he sparked Lakers comebacks in the 2nd and 4th periods. Jordan also had 2 assists and just 1 turnover in 24 minutes. I will be interested to see what everybody says.

With Fisher, Walton, and Odom all ice cold from the field, the Lakers were fortunate to win this game. Besides Kobe and Farmar, Pau fought hard all night to end up with 15 points and 10 boards. Saddled by a couple of terrible calls after great defense, Lamar also battled hardily and really took over the boards in the last 5 minutes of the game. His 11 boards were critical to the team surviving against a strong Portland effort. What was clearly obvious, however, was the Lakers need for Andrew Bynum on the boards and on defense. Pau is a fine defender and plays smart but he doesn’t have the body to dominate the boards and defend other bigs down low like Andrew does.

Finally, another MVP performance from Kobe in my opinion: 30 points, 9 boards, and 7 dimes, not to mention clutch baskets or passes to Farmar (or Sasha or Ronny, who both also came through off the bench to save the day). I also have to agree with Kobe that the refereeing in this game was terribly one-sided. What the hell happened to the home team getting some breaks. The push on Kobe’s dunk on the lob and the blocking call on Lamar for his second foul were just terrible calls. The LakeShow may be getting love from the media but so far we are still getting jobbed by the zebras.

Bottom line, we got our 9th win in a row, even though we did not win the boards for the third straight game. We had three starters score in single digits but three bench players come up big for a combined 41 points. That’s how a championship team does it. It may not always be pretty but they get it done. Way to go, Lakers. 10 and 11 coming up on Thursday and Friday. Keep the pedal to the metal. No mercy on the opponents.

Tom

40 before 20 baby!!

Nice to see Plash is finally on board with Kobe. No, seriously, it's OK -- we've all been wrong and I appreciate it when a mistake is admitted. Welcome to the bandwagon, Bill Plaschke.

Also, one interesting note from the Portland pre-game show tonight. The Blazers announcers were rejoicing that Javie was working the game, saying they knew it was good for the Blazers as he always favors the road team. He spends all game proving it, then baits and kicks out MacMillan. Good job, Steve. you pissed off everyone.

Who was it the other day I was talking about his with? As you so accurately said, he's that guy who always has to make the game about him.

Glad we beat all eight opponents tonight. Can't wait to see the rematch on Friday and start the MVP chants in the Gaden.

TJ Siemers is such an ass. That moron is such a hater. He basically said that he would rather talk about drama than on actual basketball. That should give you all you need to know of him as a sports writers for the times. Moreover, his whole article is a snide attack on the fans. Can we get this jerk fired?

what are you'll expecting from luke...........the talent level around him has improved dramastically.........nothing is wrong with him......he's just not as talented or athletic as almost every player at his position.

This game just gave the Lakers the push they needed to realize that not every win comes easy and without team effort

GO LAKERSSSS

As for Lamar, it's not how you start, it's how you finish and he also helped secure us to victory with his strong play (albeit rebounds and solid defense and good passing), when it most mattered. Its the little things too ya know?? Can't be madd at that. The fouls interrupted him in the first half as far as establishing any type of fluidity on the court, but he finished strong.

A "W" is a "W"..go Lakers and continue to build momentum..We still have not PEAKED lets not forget...Imagine that

FKILLAH: Simers is def a royal SCHMUCK! I don't even read his articles anymore, always anti-Laker (er, Kobe)..

Is it commonplace for a writer to display such disdain for a sports team and or player he is assigned to cover?? Am I missing something here??

Erik M,

>>>One more thing. Why is it being a "Hater" to point out
>>>the obvious that Luke is not very good?

There's a difference between pointing out that he's not
playing well (which was correct last night) and pointing
out that he's not very good (which is a subjective opinion).

There are games this season where Luke has played well
and contributed. Last night was not one of them.

The thing is, it wasn't JUST Luke playing bad early in
the game. Consider these dominating first quarter stats:

Fisher shot 0-for-1 with a foul, a turnover, and a technical.

Kobe shot 1-for-3 and committed two fouls

Odom shot 1-for-3 and committed a turnover and two fouls

By comparison, Luke's 1-for-2 with a technical and a turnover just looks par for the course.

So why are there 50 people posting vitriolic posts about how
LUKE is losing the game? LaMarcus Aldridge scored 10
points in the quarter. Luke wasn't guarding him, Gasol
was. Yes, Travis Outlaw made two shots over Luke, but
it's not like he was waltzing past Luke for a layup.

That's the thing. There are a lot of people who have
decided to make Luke a scapegoat, so even though the
whole TEAM is playing poorly, they single out Luke and
scream and yell and gnash their teeth.

I didn't see any posts saying "Gasol sucks. His man
is scoring at will, so he's TOTALLY losing this game
for us. He should be on the bench". Yet those statements
would be just as valid as singling out Luke.

LTLF,

I usually respect yor posts a lot and I agree that Luke is not as bad as people say (although I really don't like him).

But I think that you are missing the point why people always single him out when things go sour.

Yes, Gasol, Odom, Fisher and even Kobe were playing badly yesterday.
But the big difference is that they usually play well and last night was just an off-night (and Kobe and Gasol turned it around in the second half).

They have a lot more good games than bad ones, so they are worthy every penny the Lakers are paying them.

But for Luke the good games are getting so rare that to defend him you have to point out the few good games he had this year.

So people are mad because he is getting 4m a year (not his fault, I know) and eating up some cap space that we could use to resign Farmar, Vujacic, Turiaf or Ariza.

And this money would be much more well spent to anyone of them.
So people are just frustated that we cannot fire Luke and send his paycheck to the bench mob players.

Korey,

50 b4 20 is a slam dunk if everyone stays healthy.

Let's keep the bigger picture in mind.... 34 straight!!! Ha ha.

9 down, 25 to go.

I gree except for the big picture part. Should be 1 game at a time and big goal Championship. Good post however.

"HERE'S TO RONNY TURIAF

Agree and I think the best thing is for Bynum's return healthy. When you have to spread minutes around the best way is too build big double digit leads early. Then you can give longer minutes to the bench players which can keep the lead.
Accomplish keeping every one happy getting PT and giving starters rested and fresh for next game. Also gives experience for younger players and extends older players by playing less.
