Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water

February 15, 2008 |  9:05 am

And by "water," I mean "the All-Star break without any worries," along comes Kobe's durn pinkie.  A extra look-see from the medical staff has revealed a right pinkie ligament tear.  The doc recommended surgery.  Kobe has decided to hold off on the O.R., opting for pain over a six week absence that could leave the Lakers high and dry in seriously competitive and ever changing Western Conference.  And  considering the Lakers have their sights on coming out of said division, it stands to reason that Kobe on the court would be a part of any blueprint.  He also remains, for the time being, a part of the All-Star blueprint this weekend, although Dirk will be subbing for him in the shootout from distance.  The Lakers (and yours truly) are hoping the league will allow Kobe to skip the whole kit and kaboodle (or at least limit his work to a cameo smaller than William Hurt in "A History of Violence").  But even then, the decision likely remains up to Kobe, who appears dead set on lacing 'em up.

If you see Pau Gasol on the street, compliment his ability to be an apt pupil.  Then let him know he can crash on your couch, if need be.

AK

Is Denver the next Western conference player to make a bold move?  Shockingly, Z.Bo is open to the idea of leaving the Knicks.

Jerry Stackhouse's big yap could make him even less popular than Devean George in Dallas.  But should  Stack's flapping gums not sink the ship, Keith Van Horn could become a local folk hero without doing a damn thing.

For those who like to do their homework before betting on the rookie-sophomore game, have at it.

It's easy for Blazer Darius Miles to love the NBA lifestyle, since it doesn't involve that whole "playing" thing.

OH SHIZNIK!
Memphis does have our lottery pick this year!!!!
The think Kobe knows now is know year is guaranteed. He or Pau or Bynum could get hurt next year. If you have a chance for a ring you just gotta go all-in.

I am wiling to bet that Kobe will find a way to play.

Even if it means DRAMATICALLY changing his game ... ONLY averaging 20 pts , but playing crazy good D, and distributing I thiink Kobe will do it.

This COULD BE THE DEFINING MOMENT in Kobe's career.

Can he change his game for half-a-season to overcome a finger injury, and still lead his team to victory?

Kobe loves challenges. And this might be his greatest on-court test.

How could he turn this opportunity down?

Ak

Thanks very much for your reply. I just wanted to know the source of your thought, did I miss something in an article? or if it was your opinion. No problem with that.

I found this in the ESPN article that adds some light perhaps to Kobe's thoughts

"The Lakers, according to team sources, are trying to convince the league that Bryant should be excused after a visit Thursday to hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin revealed a ligament tear. Bryant is expected to make that plea personally once he arrives in New Orleans on Friday after Shin recommend that Bryant undergo surgery that would likely sideline him for six weeks."

My take is Kobe could play. But just a cameo and Kobe has his hand wrapped in pillows. But would it be fair to others? Remember VC from last year?

Stackhouse is super dumb!!!

He is going to kill this deal!

ahahahahahah....

I love it when people snitch on themselves.

The league needs to change that rule anyway. If a team trades you, then you can't sign with them to the NEXT YEAR, period.

It's unfair to do what Stackhouse is proposing to do.

AK/BK,

Kobe didn't tear the ligament during the Minny game right? How I'm understanding it is that it was torn the whole time and he aggravated that injury on Wednesday.

If that's the case that makes me feel a little better since he played very well with it after the Atlanta game. If the Lakers can set him up with something to protect the hand from further injury, Kobe avoiding surgery until the summer may be plausible.

Laker Lover, i think a couple years ago when players started to pull out the all star game with injuries (Shaq an big offender) the league issued a ruling that you had to miss either the last team game before or after the all-star break with the injury or face suspension or something to that effect. The only way Kobe pulls out without risking suspension is through surgery, special consideration or the Lakers declare him out of the next game.

Okay, enough whining about the hand.

How `bout a feel-good story?

Byron Scott finally makes it to the All-Star game. He never
made it there as a Laker. He was sort of the Tayshaun Prince
of the Showtime Lakers.

The year Byron most likely SHOULD have made it was
1988, when he led the Lakers in scoring. Yes, B. Scott
was the leading scorer on a team with Kareem, Worthy,
Magic, Cooper, and Michael Thompson. (Not to mention
Mike Smrek). Kareem, Magic, and Worthy all made the
All-Star game that year, but Byron got passed over for
Fat Lever, Clyde Drexler, and Alvin Robertson.

And even better, Kobe is starting for coach B.Scott. Byron
mentored Kobe when he first came into the league and they
are still friends. I'm sure Byron will be happy to give Kobe
as many minutes or as few minutes on the floor as he wants.

I imagine Kobe is kinda torn right now (and not just his
pinkie). He wants to rest the hand so that he can get
it back to as good a condition as possible for the rest of
the season. But at the same time, he was the leading
vote getter in the West. We fans are what MAKE the
NBA what it is, and Kobe doesn't want to let down the
fans. I think he'll go out and play a reasonable amount
of minutes (maybe 15-20), and spend the rest of the
game cheering from the bench and spending some QT
with his old mentor.

And Kobe has played with the injury for a couple of games and done okay. The turnover against Atlanta was the game after the injury and he was shooting at about 45% untill the Wolves game a.

Kobe loves BScott.

I would be so amused if Devean George gives in and agrees
to the deal and then the league blocks Dallas from re-signing
Jerry Stackhouse. I would just laugh and laugh.

Xodus-

My understanding is the original injury came in the Jersey game, and then it was aggravated against Minnesota. It's possible that more damage could have been done, I guess, depending on the extent of the original injury. As for avoiding surgery, I think he'll try to play. Whether he'll be able to do it, it's hard to say. Even if he can't make it worse, there's a point at which pain and swelling make it too hard to play effectively. Not that it's the same, but I've torn finger ligaments before (and have the screws in the bone to prove it) and it's painful and awkward. It makes your hand feel more like a mitten than a glove, so to speak.

He'll try to work around it, but it may not work. Cycling through a situation where he heals, can shoot and handle, then gets banged and can't for a few games may not be super productive, either.

On the other hand, he has more help than before, so that could play into it, too. There are a lot of factors, but I think the biggest is how much he feels like he can heal over the break.

BK

The thing about the Dallas trade is that, in typical Cubanesque Mavericks fashion, they're really looking to screw everyone involved in the deal but themselves. With Stackhouse, they're looking to screw the Nets. With George losing his Bird Rights, they're looking to screw one of their players.

Just plain not cool.

Memphis didn't get screwed with the Pau Gasol trade. They were empowered to rebuild. They get a great rookie (Critterion) who has the potential to be a star in three years. They get two first round draft picks. They get rights to Marc Gasol (who some feel may be as good as Pau Gasol in a couple years) and they get a contract to burn with Kwame Brown and, thus, $9.1 million to improve their team's roster.

AND they get rid of a player not appreciated in Memphis, Pau Gasol.

Dallas should be penalized for what they're trying to do.

GO LAKERS!

Tim-4-SHow,
"And there were actually bloggers who thought this guy was our answer?"

Yep, probably the same ones who wanted to sign Chris Webber.

First time blogger here, but LOVIN' this - you guys are great! Man it's good to be a Laker fan & having the kinds of problems we have now. Do we sit the Mamba & lose a few now but win it all this year, or do we let him play and win it all this year anyways? What a dilemma! Seriously - if anyone (LBJ, Nash, etc) were hurt like this do we REALLY believe their team would still be a contender? The LAKER kingdom believes!

GO LAKERS!

John K--

I am a huge Marillion Fan..My favorite band...

Misplaced Childhood is my favorite album ever and easily the equivalent of any Floyd Album

Regarding the theory that Lebron realizes the playoffs are more important than the regular season therefore sitting out games (ALL OF WHICH RESULTED IN LOSSES FOR HIS TEAM) with a pinky injury is acceptable.....I know a few players that disagree with that approach:

MJ
Magic
Bird
Kobe
Hakeem
Malone
Stockton
Iverson

I do know players that definitely agree with the approach, however:

Shaq
T-Mac
Vince Carter

And now....Lebron James

i agree that kobe is probably feeling torn between playing and not playing. i don't doubt he sucks it up and plays through the pain because kobe's always been a gamer (unlike lebron). it would be hard to convince the guy to sit considering the lakers are on top of the league right now, even without bynum.

but i'm leaning towards surgery right now and sitting the 6 weeks. having gasol and odom down there holding down the fort will keep the lakers from going into the lottery. i wouldn't mind kobe opting to have the surgery and coming back to a healthy lakers squad towards the end of the season.

think about it. who wants to play a complete laker squad in the first round as the top seed? the lakers, when healthy, should be a top 3 seed in the west. imagine them healthy as a 7th or 8th, and knocking everyone off.

if i were kobe, i'd have the surgery, heal up, and return towards the end of the season fresh for the playoffs. i'm sure everyone will be targeting his pinky from here on out. the only negatives i see in this will be that kobe will no longer be considered for mvp, and the lakers could very well drop out of the playoff race.

Cahrles are you and I the only ones up for 3/2/08?

Didn't Alonzo Mourning get traded, and re-signed with his former team the heat (via Nets-Toronto). That's pretty close right?

Chill out Laker fans! We are NOT going to drop out of the playoff race, no matter what KB24 does. He will make the best decision for himself and the team. He wants to play - he wants to win - he will do what's best to accomplish the goal of "ring #4 and nothing less". Have no fear - we are the freakin' LAKERS!

Another facet of Stackhouse's stupidity has occurred to me.

Since he went and shot his mouth off to the press, he's
made it clear that he really expects to be back with Dallas
in 30 days and has no intention of playing for New Jersey.

If I was New Jersey, after the trade I'd tell Jerry Stackhouse
that they'll agree to buy him out... for 3 million dollars. So he
can play for the Nets and get the full 17 million remaning
on his contract, or if he wants to go back to his championship
contending team, he can take a 14 million dollar hit to do so.

Elle,

I can get Laker Legacy to go with some other friends. There was another blogger HappyDaze who said count him in.... You have myspace? myspace.com/musiclife75

Stranger in the Night-

That is funny. Remeber when Kobe was compared to Vince Carter and all the now LeBron lovers said Vince is the best not Kobe, then Iverson came along, Then T-Mac, Then Nash, Then Wade and LBJ is the newest version of the KOBE HATERS' ACE.

In any case don't let this unmentioned that LeBron's team is on the D-LEAGUE third conference known as the eastern conference. So they were in the playoffs before the season started. And if PLAYOFF was gauranteed for the LA LAKERS there was no doubt that Kobe should do the SURGERY right now.

WHAT THE HELL DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH LERON JAMES??

just had to say that.

GO LAKERS

AK-BK

You guys have a public myspace page? Your boy Steve Mason does.....

Kobe is the glue that holds your team together. He's the one that creates shots for your roll players, without him your players have a tough time doing what ther supposed to do. fisher is having one his best seasons of his career cause of kobe.
your space invader vlad will certainly miss kobe
walton, well what can I say about him that you guys havn't already said.
dummy, count on him to disappear when he has to step up.
ronny, not worried about him your coach will keep him on the bench, now that gasol is there.
gasol is about the only bright spot on your team without kobe sheeeeeeeee

YOU GUYS JUST TURNED INTO THE L.A GRIZZLIES

Charles...

Thanks for doing the roll call!

Regardless of whether Kobe gets the surgery or not, thank God we have a superstar who truly hates to miss even slightly meaningful games. I must admit early during Kobe's career I use to think that Kobe and McGrady could basically be plugged in for each other and were basically the same player. Now we know better. Kobe works hard in the off season so he won't be injured during the season, and when he IS injured, he often guts it out.

I truly hope he isn't jeopardizing his career by playing. Either way though, he probably is looking at it as just another challenge to adjust to.

On another note, I actually was more excited to see Kobe in the 3-point shoot out than in the ASG. Anyone else feel that way?

Anyways, GL Jordan in the Rookie/Soph game. We're all rooting for you.

Have a good one. Go Lakers!

Happydaze

yes I do have a myspace, just search under my email addy elleb28@hotmail.com.

the MILLION dollar question-

Any SPORTS DOCTORS in the house (if you are a biology major please don't say me cause I'll be laughin), or anybody with more resources than I.

QUESTION:

What is the worst thing that can happen if Kobe doesn't get the surgery? Is it going to be painful? Is it going to get WORST? Is it going to effect his future? Does he have to pull a Ronny Lott? Am I the only one who wants to know this?

As always all I've been able to find on the net is the media members' usual MUMBLE. HELP PLEASE.

I’m re-posting this by Tsphere in yesterday’s post. sometimes you run into a very eloquent post that should be seen by the masses – and in our fervor to go to the next "new" post, I don’t know how many people saw this, since it was late last night. it’s got some typos – but it’s spot on.

God job Tsphere, assuming you didn’t plagiarize this from somewhere!

>>>>>>>>>Will this be the tragic moment of the season? I don't think so, though it is bad news.
I think we should all be enjoying the comic high point of the season highlighted by the Shaq trade followed by the Devean George comedy hour.

What's comic about the Shaq trade is the take of the journalists and the ideological drift that's been taking place as everyone waits for the return of Shreq, the MDE (Most Dominant Earlier... in his career). At first everyone said that it was a desperation move that made no sense. But the longer we wait for the official date of return, the more the journalists have aligned on the official Suns ideology: Shaq is rejuvenated. If anything it resembles the Emperor's New Team. The longer Shaq's uncertain health keeps him out -- though he says he's already 1000% (sic) -- the more the pundits say he'll be rejuvenated and transformed. Marv Albert was going on and on about this as the camera showed Shaq sitting at courtside in a spiffy grey suit. And of course the rejuvenated and indomitable Shaq is the missing piece that will complete the Sun juggernaut.

The one insight that nevertheless comes through the different commentaries is the remark that things were really bad in the locker room with Marion and Stoudamire and that Shaq is a reassuring presence. That alone justifies the trade and explains the rejuvenation that nobody has seen but everyone predicts. But if he isn't rejuvenated by the desert air -- and what sort of magic potion would he need to take to make that work -- how long will it be before the bad vibes start reverbating again?

Was it David Stern who gave the order to the NBA press corps to say only good things about the Suns-Heat trade after so much initial dissing? Maybe, in a trade-off, he got d'Antoni to agree to Shaq's return for the game against the Lakers. I don't remember who I heard say, quite rightly, that if Shaq does return rejuvenated it will prove what a slacker he was in Miami. But that shouldn't be a surprise to Laker fans. After 3 titles, Shaq stopped making an effort, used "company time" to extend his vacations dedicated principally to doing absolutely nothing to improve or even just maintain his game. Yes, moving to Miami motivated him because he felt humiliated by Buss's refusal to grant an extension and he wanted to prove something to the world before age could take its final toll. Luckily, in his second year, he ended up in the finals against the hapless Mavs alongside an energetic Wade and the O'Brien trophy fell into his hands again. But that's as far as his body could take him and his mind went on vacation again. Anyone who believes that Shaq can rub a magic lamp or just decide to rejuvenate should return to their science fictions movies, where the special effects do the job real people -- with their fragile minds and bodies -- can't do.<<<<<<<<<<

Laker Lover,

Dude do you even read the articles? As to why the nba is requiring an injured player to play, i have no clue either but they are. I think their logic is if Kobe can play for the lakers injured, why can't he play in the allstars injured.

As per quote from espn currently lakers are seeking clearance from the league. So again laker lover, check the hate before you wreck yourself.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/allstar2008/news/story?id=3246576
"The Los Angeles Lakers are hoping that Kobe Bryant gets clearance from the league to miss Sunday's All-Star Game in New Orleans after announcing Thursday that Bryant has a torn ligament in his right pinkie."

justanothermambafan-

Hey I love your name and spirit. I also somewhat agree that we are not going to fall off the playoff race (although me and you may be bias on this subject) but this is not about making or not making the playoffs. This is about a RING and a Western Conference crown that looked very achievable up until yesterday and upon losing Kobe for 6 weeks one becomes impossible and the other a TALLLLL ORDER.

Kobe is like the Black Knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail. "Merely a flesh wound." Kobe could lose an arm and he would continue to play. We Should nix Black Mamba and instead call him the Black Knight

Charles-

No, but we should. It's on the to-do list, for sure (haha).

BK

Kobesbad,

"Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws" are incredible albums. I wasn't sure if "Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Back In The Water" was a "Jaws" reference or Marillion lyrical reference. That's why I asked.

GO LAKERS!

Happydaz-

What is up playa. Read your respond to my post the other day and wanted to say HALA.

But I can't believe you thought Kobe and T-Mac could be plugged in for each other. I'll be Marc Jackson for a sec, "You're better than that."

Stackhouse!:

Biggest waste of potential ever?

Three biggest examples:

1) Despite name, never started a chain of casual dining restaurant to take on Waffle House and IHOP.

2) Despite appearance, never starred with Kiki Vandeweghe, Patrick Ewing and Vlad Radmanovic in a GEICO cavemen spinoff.

3) Despite promising college and early pro career, has spent rest of his NBA life famous only for his "camping toilet" technique for shooting free throws.

"Assuming Bryant can't practice the rest of the season, it also would inhibit the Lakers' integration of newcomer Pau Gasol."

wha wha wha?

Why can't Bryant practice and just put the red-no touch jersey on him? Just like QBs get...

If he practiced and Sasha Vujacic hurt him , man I might go skitzo...

Kobesbad,

Actually "The Last Straw" the climax of Marillion's album "Clutching at Straws". A statement of an addict's inability to overcome personal demons and worldly obstacles.

I think AK meant the "Jaws" reference, but I think it would have been a lot cooler if he would have meant the Marillion reference. Now THAT'S obscure to an American.

GO LAKERS!

Kobesbad,

By the way, Kobe rocks!

GO LAKERS!

BK,
I'm betting Kobe would be willing to get shots at half-time of games to mask the finger pain if it gets too bad.

Also, I would like to see the angle discussed of how Kobe could adjust his game with this.

Maybe he changes his role in the offense to be the primary facilitator? Maybe, he posts up less and sticks to pull-up jumpers and open shots off of ball movement?

Those are the strategic questions I'm really interested in...

Kobe should have the surgery, make a cameo appearance at the allstar game but not play but... the exact opposite will happen. LOL! Kobe won't have the surgery and he'll play 40 minutes in the allstar game...

Lebron will sit and watch after putting in his 15 minutes. What they should do, since there were so many guards getting stiffed this year is allow Kobe to come out and wave to the fans and add one of the guards as an alternate... but... that won't happen either...

Samski - Who the heck is Leron James?

I think if the Lakers were in the East, the surgery would already have been done.

But the fact is, we're in the west. 4.5 games seperating #1 and lottery. That margin is even less for the Lakers.

Yes, their schedule is "favorable" and the All-Star break offers some reprieve... but with such a narrow margin for error, they could easily slip down into the lottery without ample time stage a miraculous comeback to get the 8th seed.

If Gasol was capable of being a #1 option on a playoff team, then Memphis would have already been contending. I love Gasol, but he can't do it alone, just like Kobe could not do it alone.

As you can see, this is a classic dilemma:

Forego surgery, risk more trouble down the road, risk missed or subpar games, risk having to do surgery anyway at a less favorable time

Or

Have the surgery now and pretty assure the team the little chance at making the playoffs, even though they could conceivably compete for the title THIS YEAR.

rayray

Nothing is impossible with the Black Mamba - AKA the Black Knight! LOL! I agree it would be more difficult this year, but I would settle for keeping the long-term view alive that we are in the process of creating the newest DYNASTY! If it takes a bump in the road because of a finger, I'd settle for that. It's better than where we were a few games ago with Kwame & no Kung-PAO! It's not "now or never" - with the guys we have it's "now or later - either way we're winning it all"!!

http://www.nypost.com/seven/02152008/sports/are_they_kidding__97682.htm

Peter Vescey's take on the JKidd trade....good read , even though Pete's a tool.

AK,

I read your earlier post and I still don't buy how this is up to kobe. Why would the lakers be seeking clearance from the league if it was kobe's decision as to whether to play or not.

Also if he has a strong desire to play based on his always up for a challenge attitude, why would the lakers not have the discussion inhouse? i.e. kobe pls sit down, we want to tell you we'd like you not to play as opposed to what you're inferring ... i.e. latimes we'd like kobe not to play in allstars, pls pass that along to him pls.

Like seriously y'all need to stop the hateration (AK you're not included, i have another theory as to why you're sticking to your guns, see below). Given a choice from all the articles out there it's apparent the lakers and kobe would rather not play this weekend, the real debate here should be whether he should be even playing at all to begin with

Like has the lakers team doctor signed off on this crap? What's his opinion on how serious the injury currently is? What's his opinion on how serious it could get? Does Vitti have anything up his sleeve that could help?

How about you help us get answers to some of those questions instead of WRONGLY reading in between the lines. You dont have a quote anywhere that says kobe wants to play, but based on his silence you're inferring he wants to. Never mind other facts like articles inferring league clearance is needed to sitout the games.

Lastly AK, normally I'd say your hating but idk ... i think you're just one of those people that has a hard time raising his hand up and saying I'm wrong especially if you're not caught red handed with it stuck in the cookie jar ... dude your analysis of this is way off ... surprise us and own up to it ...

bronxlakerfan

Your welcome. Chest pound and a point right atcha!!!!!

Kobe can sit out for 6 weeks, we've got the Machine now! Dude will easily put up 30 points/game, Farmar will step up with increased minutes, it'll be fine... just fine...

Don't we have any DLeague guys who play SG/SF? I mean... what's the point of having our own DLeague team, running the triangle, etc. if we aren't going to use those guys anyway?

I have faith in the rest of the team ... kobe should sit ... this schedule is weak enough for us to play 0.5 ... lets make other folks earn their paychecks for one ... i.e. calling out rad and lamar to follow fish and gasol's lead

i'm on the 55win bandwaggon and i approve this message ... lol
