I'll try not to be distracted by the Vandy-Tennessee game
If this pregame report is full of typos or misinformation, it's only because I'm typing with one eye on my Commodores, and the other on this screen. Like bald version of Tony Shalhoub's character in Men in Black. But maybe it's a good thing, (segue on the way, people) because while Vandy is looking for a big win against an elite, #1 ranked squad, so too is Portland looking to score one for the little guy against the West's top dog (bam, there it is!). The Lakers are looking to avoid a let down and run their consecutive wins streak to nine. They'll have to do it without Vlad Rad, who will miss tonight's game, and likely Thursday as well. Could be more, but nobody's quite sure yet. His MRI showed nothing more than a strain, which was a relief to Radmanovic, who was worried the injury could have been Achilles related (the tendon, not the hero), since the pull was at the bottom of his calf, just above the ankle. Luke Walton will get the start tonight, but as you'll hear in the audio, down the road big minutes for the don of Custom Comfort Mattresses could be tough to come by.
Other items of interest:
- Lakers inactives: Mihm, Bynum, Ariza. Portland scratches James Jones, Greg Oden, Darius Miles.
- It's corned beef night in the media room. They've got a whole theme, with sour kraut, rye bread, mustard, potatoes, etc... but then are also serving something called "Greek Nachos." Essentially, pita bread with fixins. It's an odd combo, to say the least.
- Brandon Roy won't play tonight for Portland, a note that probably should have come above the previous one. Without Roy, Portland will likely start Jarrett Jack and Steve Blake in the backcourt, with Aldridge, Pryzbilla, and Travis Outlaw. The Blazers have been slumping bad, losing eight of ten, but could be inspired knowing that perhaps a crack at a playoff berth is out there now that Yao has gone down.
- PJ talked a little about the Yao injury, and how it could change the face of the W.C. race. Needless to say, it hurts them. Things are so tight, any injury to any team could be the difference between finishing in the top eight and going home early.

BK (more after the jump)
As one would guess, I was concerned about one thing and one thing only heading into this game: Lakersblog icon Von Wafer. How's he doing? Will he play tonight? Is he still looking to chuck like the fate of Western Civilization depends on it? After listening to some reporters pepper Nate McMillan with some trivial inquiries about Brandon Roy's health (he won't play tonight), who's starting at the 3 for Portland (Travis Outlaw) and his take on the Lakers (he considers them one of the best passing teams in the league and a squad that's "hitting on all cylinders"), I finally broached the important subject. Whether McMillan felt comfortable yet with Von on the floor, given how little practice he's time he's had since Thursday's trade deadline. "We've gone through some sets with him, in a situation like that, a week of basketball with the team is not enough time. So "no," to answer your question."
I gotta say something, and maybe it's just me. I'm not a coach. Nor do I claim to be one. Nor do I claim to know more about basketball than a dude who's coached steadily in the NBA since the 2000-2001 season. But good lord, man! How are you ever gonna learn what you have in this cat unless you throw him into the mix with the greenest of green lights? Am I the only person who gets this?
MacMillan did say that Wafer's been through a few easy, fairly versatile sets with his new squad, so along those lines, so it could be possible to get him on the floor without being totally lost. Which obviously provided me some hope. I asked McMillan if he had any concerns about Wafer looking to light up his old team, which can sometimes happen when guys see their former employers and get a little too amped. Not a concern, really. "Well, we want amped guys," explained the Sonic great. "That's fine. I think we need to be there now, in the sense that it's that time of the year to be hyped and pumped up. So we're looking for that."
Naturally, my ears perked up at hearing him say he wouldn't automatically yank Wafer after a few too many shots. But my enthusiasm was quickly tempered upon talking to Von in the Blazer locker room. I asked if he was excited at all at the notion of squaring off against a team that gave him walking papers (and by "squaring off," I mean "burying them via a barrage of non-stop and ill-advised threes from six feet behind the arc.". Disappointingly, while he admitted that he might have relished this opportunity last year, by now, he simply sees the Lakers as another team. Honestly, at this point, it's just about getting some burn no matter who the opponent is. "I just really want a chance to get out there and play." when I asked if he's calmed down a bit since his rookie season when it comes to shooting like there's no tomorrow and looks to pick his spots a little more, he said most definitely.
I can't say I was thrilled to hear that answer, but it's probably for the best.
By the way, he still talks with Andrew Bynum, his former purple and gold rook.

Check out this great, in-depth analysis of statistics in context:

The author at RespectKobe.com shows why you can't just compare two players statistics straight up. So, when evaluating field goal %, rebounds, assists, etc., he shows that Kobe is a MORE EFFICIENT shooter, a better rebounder, and at least as good a passer as LeBron.
If statistics interest you, you'll really enjoy this article. If you ever make comparisons of two players using stats, you should REALLY read this article.

Griz played the Suns tough until the final 3 minutes. Memphis scored 113 points tonight. Utah is down by 9 with 2 minutes left to Minnesota. Nothing comes easy in the West. Suns play tomorrow night against the Hornets, should be a fun, interesting game. Miami snaps their losing streak against the Kings. Houston is stomping Washington in their first game without Yao. Man, I love watching the NBA, especially our Lakers!!!

I hope the Portland announcers don't call the game. They along with snapper jones and the sac kings announcers are horrible, and are haters that are always trying to crack dry jokes when it comes to the lakers. I wish Chick Hearn were still around because even though he was the lakers announcer, he called the game for what it is. If you were bad he would say it, if you were good he would say it without being totally biased in favor of the lakers. He always knew facts and had good insight about the other teams and their players. He is sorely missed.

The one Blazer I can't stand is Jarrett Jack. Wow, Michael Redd just hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to beat the Cavs.
