A win so easy, it wasn't even worth Kobe's time

February 25, 2008 |  9:15 am

Pau_gasol_passes_over_his_shoulder_ Which could explain his urge to take off early.   Maybe catch the tail end of the Oscars, see how his pool picks were holding up (word is he picked upset Best Actress Marion Cottilard, which provides one's ballot a major boost), dish via text with friends over the fashion do's and don't's and who looked good while pregnant.

Or he was just pissed about the over the back's going unwhistled and figured, "My team's gonna smoke these chumps as it is, so this would be the perfect game to inform an officiating crew what a lousy job they're doing."

Probably one or the other.

In any event, this 111-91 win over the Sonics featured a quick Laker lead that was never relinquished or in jeopardy, with and without Bryant on the court.  And frankly, Kobe didn't need a ton of time on the hardwood to put together a pretty good stat line (21/4/10, 8-13 shooting), work that help create the foundation for a cruise control victory in his absence.  Plus, his teammates weren't exactly slouches with their two cents.  Yet another double-double from Lamar Odom, 22 from Pau Gasol, and a baker's dozen off the bench from Sasha "I'm a Machine at any time of day" Vujacic were just the highlights of a roster greasing a box score from top to bottom.  That action illustrates why your Los Angeles Lakers have leapfrogged past the recently embarassed Suns and currently sit atop the entire Western Conference  (which ain't the only poll they're topping, FYI).  When oats are being felt in such fashion, a team can even overcome refereeing botches that fester at a hereditary level.

Is it premature to start thinking about "34?"

The Lakers are a cohesive unit with everyone on the same page and enjoying each other's company.  Which pretty much makes the Knicks the "Bizarro-Lakers."

Despite the positive impact of Cleveland's newest Cavs, if Danny Ferry is really serious about keeping LeBron James, it might be worth his time to spread a rumor about The King and Beyonce.

Ex Clipper Wang Zhi-Zhi may have been soft on the court, but he'll clock dudes on the street like nobody's business.

Mamba-

Put me on the 34-straight wins Bandwagon.

It looks like the world is going to get it's wish

LEBRON VS KOBE for the 2008 NBA Championship

It is going down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's Go Lake Show

Cleveland and the Lakers both have solid teams and i CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE PLAYOFF START!!!!!!!!

Shaq the Wack and now simply a Quack!! Didn't Shaq say that Suns don't need to adjust to him rather he will adjust to them....bla.bla bla..Well Nash's assit total per game has dimiinished as the Suns try to adjust to the Shaq..LOL..It was funny to see poor Shaq labor and waddle his way back to offense or defense..Nice going Shaq!!

Repost from other thread:

Laker Joke from Long Ago -

Michael Joran after a long life,...dies. He goes to heaven and sees Magic walking by. Upon seeing peter, Peter says "Michael you are a very lucky man. An honor has been bestowed upon you that rarely happens. God has seen fit to give you a house. There ae very few houses on heaven and you should be very thankful. God really appreciates your talents and gifts and wants to let you know."
Michael thanks him and make an appointment to meet with God and then goes home to luxuriate in his house. On his way to his house he passes a purple and gold mansion The place must be 50 bedrooms and 10 stories high with 24K gold everywhere and upword of 20 Laker Banners hanging from the Gold Flagpole outside.
Michael gets very excited and starts running to his house. Upon his arrival he look around puzzled. His house although one of the few in heaven, is broken down, paint peeling, weeds everywhere,...it s a dilapidated mess. Even the 6 Chcago Bulls banners in the window are faded and tattered.
The next day Michael meets with God and says that he is very appreciative of the house, but he did have a question. God told him to go ahead and ask.

Michael said, "well God I was the scoring champ more than 10 times, the MVP of the league 4 times and I won 3 consecutive championships ---twice. I won 6 titles and Magic won 5 and yet my house is a shack compared to Magic's. I don't understand.

God replied, Michael, that's not Magic's house, that is mine.

Shaq the Wack and now simply a Quack!! Didn't Shaq say that Suns don't need to adjust to him rather he will adjust to them....bla.bla bla..Well Nash's assit total per game has dimiinished as the Suns try to adjust to big mouth..LOL..It was funny to see Shaq labor and waddle his way back to offense or defense..Nice going Shaq!!

Given the glory he brought the Lakers, it's painful to watch Shaq reduced to the Big Cheerleader status. Or maybe it's the Big Stuart Smalley.

"Phoenix, you're good enough, you're smart enough and doggone it, people like you!"

He's just there to pump up Nash, Amare, et al, and to make them feel better about themselves.

"Starting... at center.... for your Phoenix Suns... SHAKIRA KNEEL !!"

Sad, sad, sad.

Kobesbad,

That's a great one.... love it.

We all know, God is a Lakers fan.

Here's to 20 banners!

Does anyone else here think we should try to go for Brent Barry? If not for what he can bring, to keep him away from the Celtics and Spurs.

Also, an observation from last night's game. After Kobe left the game, Gasol seemed to immediately struggle with his shooting -- poorer shot selection and awkward shooting in general. Just goes to show how Kobe's draw on defenders makes life so much easier for Gasol (and Odom, Sasha, etc).

One win(game) at a time - Let's make it 9 on Tuesday!

Kobe MVP

Lakers - 2008 World Champions!!!!!!

Will the Lakers Organization willing to pay HUGH money to maintain this roster intact in the following years to come to make a dynasty is a BIG question.

LOL Mamba24 and richtown

zen,

I knew you'd see the light eventually. haha

Tom...I forgot -

Chuck (Sir Charles) is probably focused on the Alabama Governor's race right now, much as he was focsed on gambling and golfing during his playing days. The round mound of unending sound is probably a little quieter on that Laker naysaying. Or he should be.

I miss turning off the Network broadcast during the playoffs and listening to Chick's radio broadcast on my stereo while watchng the game. Last year I didn't even bother turning off the network morons. Ahhhh, as Archie & Edith used to say: "Those were the days".

So the current situation for the Lakers, by position, is something like this:

PG:
+ Fisher & Farmar healthy
+ Sasha or Coby could backup if Fisher or Farmar got injured

SG:
+ Kobe playing great through pain
+ The Machine playing well backing him up
- There is no replacement if Kobe goes down
+ Coby could fill in if Sasha went down

SF:
- Ariza possibly out for season
+/- Rad was playing well recently, but out with calf injury
+/- Luke starting to improve, but nursing bad ankle
+ When Bynum gets healthy, Lamar could take over as starter

PF:
+ Lamar playing great since Pau added
+ Pau will be awesome here when Bynum comes back
+ Ronny does well in the minutes he plays at PF

C:
+ Pau plays good here as well
- Bynum out, hopefully back before end of regular season
- Mihm out, maybe for the rest of the season
+/- Mbenga okay big body, but not for big minutes
+ Ronny does fine here when Lakers playing small-ball.

So if you're looking to add one player to shore up a position,
what do you add?

Some ideas:

Brent Barry - he's probably going back to San Antonio rather than
uprooting his family to switch to another contending team. It
would be awesome to have him to back up both guard position,
but who's minutes do you give him? Farmar's? Sasha's? Could
he back up the SF position?

Actually, Barry points out something about the type of player
the Lakers should be looking for (if any). It should NOT be a
player who's expecting to play a lot of minutes.

Right now the Lakers have a good balance of minutes to players.
They'll have to re-work the distribution of minutes when Bynum
comes back, but you don't want to add someone whose ego will
get bruised if they're mostly riding the bench.

I'd go with adding either a SF or a big.

Lamar is presumably going to take over most of the minutes at
SF when Drew comes back, but it's looking more and more like
Ariza won't be back this season, and Rad and Luke are
perenially injured.

If he hadn't signed with a Russian team, I'd suggest the Lakers
sign Viktor Khryapa for the rest of the season.

Other than that, I can't think of any SF's that have been waived.
Who are the hot SF's in the D-League? Is there a retired SF that
might be worth bringing in to be a stable locker-room presense
and to play some backup minutes only if needed?

As for front-court help, Bynum and MBenga are the only two
big bangers on the team. Gasol is great against finesse big
players, but not as good against big banger frontcourt players.
I'd prefer that Ronny's backup minutes go at PF, where he's
rarely at a size disadvantage.

I three ideas here:

Jelani McCoy. He plays for the D-Fenders, and earned a ring
with the Lakers in 2002. He's not great, but a little bit better than
Mbenga. The biggest advantage is that he's already familiar with
the triangle.

Nick Fazekas. Dallas waived him to make room for the Kidd
trade. He's a rookie who averaged 20 & 10 in college. Guys
who average 20 & 10 in college almost always succeed in the
NBA. Actually his game is quite a bit like Gasol, so I'd consider
signing him for two years at the minimum and having Gasol
& Kareem mentor him a bit.

PJ Brown. He's an excellent post defender. If they add him to
the existing set of healthy players, he could easily take over as
the backup center, freeing up Ronny to play PF minutes. The
question is if he'd come back at all, let alone for the rest of the
season on a minimum contract. If he thinks the Lakers are
serious contenders, he might do it to try and get a ring.

Any other ideas?

Or do you think the Lakers should just stand pat and hope that
Bynum and Ariza recover completely?

34 wins in a row?

The Lakeshow is playing great but no one’s touching that winning streak IMHO. There will be the matter of integrating AB back in the line-up… and you know that Phil will do his experimental combinations at one point. Kobe’s competitive drive notwithstnding, PJ also likes to leave something for the playoffs… not reveal all of his tricks. So, yeah, that win streak is safe. I'll be happy with 60 wins.

Go Lakers!

So Vujacic is actually keepable now. A good player.

So what happens if some team offers him $5 mill next year, do we keep him for that price?

What's out of range for his talent?

Agree Laker Tom -

If you've watched the chamionship a 11:30 at night after the news and extremely tape delayed, you've been there.
You've seen the adulation on he Logo's face when Magic finally junior skyhooked his way past the Celtics. Or you've felt the pain for Elgin, who retired during the greatest laker run ever, only to see West get the culmination of their collective dream.
You've seen Norman Go and "B" come. You've seen Vlade for Kobe and Pau for Kwame.

You've seen the greatest front office in sports, rebuild, re-tool and re-enrgize and generally get things done quicker and better than anyone..

If you've lived through the Sedale Threatt Years, you can survive anything.
Does anybody remember Cazzie Russel and that sweet baselne jumper?
Most importantly if you've been living for the Lakers very long at all,...you've seen the Beauty that is the Lakers

Keep it up Laker Tom and Tim for Show

Top of the West plays below average East tonight

Washington at New Orleans
Chicago at Dallas
Atlanta at San Antonio

Lower West teams play the top of the East tonight

Detroit at Denver
Boston at Clippers

The only game that should be challenging is Detroit at Denver.

The Lakers have done very well against losing teams, something
like 21-2. Tonight gives 3 of the top West teams and the top team
in the East a chance to slip up against lesser competition. Or
it gives the Lakers top competitors in the West to gain ground
on the idle Lakers.

--------

Pretty much the same thing tomorrow night. The Lakers have
the most challenging opponent (Portland), while their competitors
play lesser teams (Seattle, Washington, Memphis and Minnesota).

--------

Let's hope the Lakers take care of business so they can at least
maintain their position at the top of the West.

Kobe needs 7 championships to get any credit from he sportswriters as the greates and even then he will probably somehow still be villified and belittled by the HATERS

Kobesbad,

HaHa... good one.

Kobesbad,

hilarious...that got a good chuckle out of me...God must be a laker fan...

Mamba24,

Let it be known that the Laker's blog was ahead of Tim Green on the 34 win bandwagon.

Reposting Fearless's request from post-Clipper game: the 34 game win streak bandwagon: I know there are others (Tim Green for one!)

Count me in for your roll call Mamba24. It would be an honor to be add some flava from da 805!

MAMBA24!

You gotta start up the 34-game Win Streak bandwagon! By my count we are already 4 dudes deep (counting me):

1) Amazing_Happens
2) 805LakerLove
3) LakerTom
4) SBPimp (not yet committed)
5) Yours Truely (FearlessWhackJob)

Plus, we need to upgrade the 55-win Bandwagon. It needs new rims. Captain's chairs for all the original faithful members. Lots of flat-screen TV's. DirecTV and PS3's in every seat. Plus, a set of fuzzy dice on the rear view mirror.

Oh, don't forget the NOS, too. Cause we are racing to the playoffs!

--FearlessWhackJob

LTLF
From the CBA rule book, Larry Coon

March 1 - Players waived after this date are ineligible for the playoffs

Its when they are waived.
Players can be signed after March 1 and qualify for post season.

Example: Brent Barry was released before March 1, but could still sign with SAS after 30 days

Mamba24,

Not Sure if we're doing bandwagons anymore, but Id like to be on the 55 win bandwagon, and also be added to the Championship bandwagon.

Thanks

Forget about the record of 34 in a row as record doesn't matter, but the last (play-off) game of the season does. Just look at the Patriots.

Need to stay focus of the ultimate goal.

Lakers4Life

Correction: Ted (not Tim) Green from previous post

We appear to be on a roll. But here are some things we should work on. 1. Boxing out on rebounds putting body on man, make ref do his job. 2. Continue to move with out ball, don't just stand and watch cut to basket like you want ball. 3. Must hit open shot's no excuse for hi IQ player not able to hit at least 50% of wide open shots. This would keep defenses honest and keep overpaid beachclown on roster.

Mamba put me on the championship bandwagon! Not frank rizzo, RIZZO.Two different people.

LTLF,

Definitely a banger. PJ Brown would be great - he could play C or PF and allow us to (re)try Lamar at the 3.

Mamba 24,

You were missed, welcome back. Put me on I do not want a Shaq Day until after he retires band wagon (ha ha ha).

Talking about the band wagons, it is easy to jump on the band wagon when your team is number one and smoking hot. I posted that we will be celebrating on Figueroa way before the championship band wagon started.

The early members of the 55 win band wagon, myself included, the GHF crew, is the most meaningful bandwagon expression, since most of the bloggers were still unwilling to trust our teams growth. With the improvement of the team last year, before injuries, and expecting further maturation and improvement of Drew, Farmar, Roni, Vlad and Sasha plus hoping that Kobe will not get traded (although that was a rough time) I figured we will have a great team.

Sasha, what can you say about him? He was brutalized by our blog, yet all he needed was time to grow, relax and gain confidence to allow his talent to shine in the PM. It took longer then I thought for Sasha but now he is that killer from the three we needed.

Drew, Farmar, Roni, Vlad and Sasha, Odom and now Pao and Trevor combined with Kobe are the new Kupchack Laker Dynasty. Next five years will be sweet. Don’t forget the 55, we will blow the doors of of that one.

Roky

Since everone having a giddy day...we'll bring in a classics back from the queens rivalry days...we'll just embelish it a little here....(feel free to change Suns w/ Celtics or any other team )

A Kindergarten teacher tells her class she's a BIG SUNS fan.
She's really excited about it and asks the kids if they're L fans too.

Everyone wants to impress the teacher and says they're SUNS fans too, except ONE kid, ...named Josh.

The teacher looks at Josh and says, "Josh, you're not a SUNS fan?"

"Nope, I am a Los Angeles Lakers fan!" He said proudly, "Well why are you a Los Angeles Lakers fan and not a SUNS fan?" she asked.

Josh says, "Well, my mom is a Los Angeles Lakers fan, and my dad is a Los Angeles Lakers fan, and I'm a Los Angeles Lakers fan!"

The teacher not really happy after hearing this replied, "Well, if your moms an idiot, and your dads a moron, then what would you be?!"

"Well ...." Josh replied "...then I'd be a Phoenix Suns fan!"

Is it premature to start thinking about "34?"

....................yes...............................

Kobesbad,

The Best Comment of the Day and the best Lakers story since Pau's arrival. Bravo and keep it up. Just loved the punch line.,,Did you hear this or was this original genius?

"God replied, Michael, that's not Magic's house, that is mine."

P.S. Where you were going with it I thought was what Kobe's house looks like after he wins his 9th ring. lol.

Tom

Charles- I am a laker fan not a Kobe fan, and I did re-read what I wrote, it needed a comma

great leaders are great in good times and bad, especially during bad times

Now u obviously think Kobe can do no wrong , defend his ever action and assume his ejection was good for the team. Forget about the fact the lakers were up by 30 pts at the time and one of the reasons Kobe doesnt get more calls is he is constantly whining about calls even when he isnt fouled.

Was it a foul on the play? Probably but ive seen worse not get called and the players need to play through it and adjust. Either way its no reason to get ejected and the team never lacked for intensity in the game so I am not sure how Kobe getting ejected helped in that regard. Did any laker or coach say that was the case?

I will say the one good thing about Kobe getting ejected was it showed the lakers can play well without him even while some posters here say the lakers would be a lottery team.

Mamba24,

I am ALL ABOUT the CHAMPIONSHIP WAGON!

wow, i am still getting bursts of flotacious excitement over this
trade for gasol....
i was in a vintage eyeglass store in pasadena when i found out and

nearly trashed the place with a joyous jig of pure
elation

-------------------------

LakerTom - well said or well written rather, although I am no longer considered a young pup, what attracted me to this blog in the first place (lurked for a long while) was the posting of the elder bloggers (not to mention AK& BKs contribution :P) and the great blog community you guys built here. Happy days are here again!

If anyone starts a 60 for 60 (60 wins for 60 years) bandwagon, put me in!

DK,

Barry won’t return to the Spurs because he would not be on their roster effective March 1 and would therefore be ineligible to play in the playoffs. We don’t need him although I wouldn’t mind him sitting at the end of our bench rather than the Suns or Celtics. No news of the Lakers being in the running though.

Tom

KiKosDad,

lol ... dude so not right, we should be still be civil with our opponents

Mamba24,

Nail me up on that champship bandwagon. I called this ish last year when kobe met gasol in spain.

GO LAKERS!!!

My have things changed when it comes to the opinions on Mitch Kupchak. I remember Dave Smith of 1540 and callers calling him Kupcake all the time. Now Mitch is looking like the best GM in the NBA.

He has built this team from scratch and they are set for the next 5 to 7 years.

What is wrong with these schedule makers?

The next 7 games we play POR twice and also Sacramento twice.

Then, March 23rd/24th we play GS back to back nites!

What kind of schedule making is that?

c'mon!

Byron Scott...Wow, what a shooter that kid was, huh?

I think Kobe has to win 3 championships for every one that James or Jordan win to be regarded as on par with them...he doesn't get the media respect those two get.

Check out respectkobe.com for the fun arguments for Kobe.

Just wanted to say something. Have a good one. Go Lakers!

LMAO!

AN 1,

Dang. Barry back to the Spurs. That is not fair. What a hypocrit Pop us to complain about the Lakers trade and then have his former employee gift wrap Thomas for him and then cut Barry to return home.

I liked my misinterpretation of the rule better. lol.

Tom

KikosDad,

Very nice. Kiko should be proud. I hadn't heard that one before. Great stories today on the blog. It's such a pleasure to gloat. heheh.

Tom

lakers legacy,

"If anyone starts a 60 for 60 (60 wins for 60 years) bandwagon, put me in!"

We already have. It's funny, when we had 30 games to go, I posted a schedule showing us winning 25 out of 30 to finish 60-22. I also noted, as you did, that it is the team's 60th anniversary. Hence the 60-60 Bandwagon, which Mamba is busily trying to fit into his schedule. LOL.

We need to pass the hat and get Mamba a pair of free tickets to an upcoming Laker game in appreciation. That is if AK and BK don't ante up out of their own bulging pockets. lol. Keep working, Mamba. We love you, Larry.

Tom

"Dang. Barry back to the Spurs. That is not fair. What a hypocrit Pop us to complain about the Lakers trade and then have his former employee gift wrap Thomas for him and then cut Barry to return home."

Oh c'mon! Let the Spurs and other NBA teams get what their heart desires, there has to be some compettiton for the mighty Lakers!

Besides we're talking about a 37 year old Barry?

IT'S GO-TIME, BABY!

GO LAKERS!

Laker Lover,

I think the reason Kobe was so pissed was because it had to do with his injured pinky. Remember when he said he didn’t think anybody would deliberately try to re-injure it? When you’re trying to protect an injured part of your body and someone seems to make a deliberate attempt to hit you on that part, it can really upset you.

I remember a rec league game where I was coming back from a ruptured Achilles tendon and got tackled from behind by a guy on a wide open fast break. I was so angry I jumped up and threw the ball at the guys head and started swinging away. Naturally, I was immediately ejected to my chagrin as my wife and kid were in the stands rooting for me. I think that is what happened with Kobe. Just a guess, based on his reaction.

Tom

Elle,

Can't help you there, getting rid of Clipper tickets is about as rough as finding Laker tix is. If the tickets and parking weren't completely free tonight, I wouldn't be going.

Oh c'mon! Let the Spurs and other NBA teams get what their heart desires, there has to be some compettiton for the mighty
Lakers!

That's the spirit, that's the confidence I like to hear

ready to face any team. No bashing of any signing or trade, simply accepting a challenge with total trust that your team IS the best team out there.
