A win so easy, it wasn't even worth Kobe's time
Which could explain his urge to take off early. Maybe catch the tail end of the Oscars, see how his pool picks were holding up (word is he picked upset Best Actress Marion Cottilard, which provides one's ballot a major boost), dish via text with friends over the fashion do's and don't's and who looked good while pregnant.
Or he was just pissed about the over the back's going unwhistled and figured, "My team's gonna smoke these chumps as it is, so this would be the perfect game to inform an officiating crew what a lousy job they're doing."
Probably one or the other.
In any event, this 111-91 win over the Sonics featured a quick Laker lead that was never relinquished or in jeopardy, with and without Bryant on the court. And frankly, Kobe didn't need a ton of time on the hardwood to put together a pretty good stat line (21/4/10, 8-13 shooting), work that help create the foundation for a cruise control victory in his absence. Plus, his teammates weren't exactly slouches with their two cents. Yet another double-double from Lamar Odom, 22 from Pau Gasol, and a baker's dozen off the bench from Sasha "I'm a Machine at any time of day" Vujacic were just the highlights of a roster greasing a box score from top to bottom. That action illustrates why your Los Angeles Lakers have leapfrogged past the recently embarassed Suns and currently sit atop the entire Western Conference (which ain't the only poll they're topping, FYI). When oats are being felt in such fashion, a team can even overcome refereeing botches that fester at a hereditary level.
Is it premature to start thinking about "34?"
The Lakers are a cohesive unit with everyone on the same page and enjoying each other's company. Which pretty much makes the Knicks the "Bizarro-Lakers."
Despite the positive impact of Cleveland's newest Cavs, if Danny Ferry is really serious about keeping LeBron James, it might be worth his time to spread a rumor about The King and Beyonce.
Ex Clipper Wang Zhi-Zhi may have been soft on the court, but he'll clock dudes on the street like nobody's business.

Jesterguru, no apologies necessary my man. I know I'm not the only one who found beauty in Byron's game.
A deadly jumpshot, mad hops, and a high-top fade of a haircut were pretty cool back in the day!!
I hope this week is a good week. Hopefully Phil turns these into "assessment/practice games" where he can see who is running the offense well, who is playing defense, and who can play well together on both sides of the ball. The bigger picture is really important in a week like this.
No championship bandwagon for me yet, as Bynum isn't back, the team isn't fully developed defensively, and they have been playing weak opponents so far.

I'd be into Shaq day, but . . . Shaq never seems to show love to his teammates. The Lakers win was all about Shaq. He rarely mentions the great supporting cast. He is the big x or the big y. If Shaq held a Lakers appreciation day, I'd possibly reciprocate.
We do cut out some of our collective Lakers glory if we start hating on someone who is so entwined with our legacy. I'll celebrate Shaq as a part of a Lakers team. But not as a celebration of Shaq alone. The Lakers won those championships, not Shaq. I'll have a Shaq day right after our Rick Fox day and our Michael Cooper Day and our Norm Nixon day and Gail Goodrich day. But not as a stand alone. Shaq was a part of a team that he could not have achieved without. As Kobe knows, the Lakers are bigger than any one player. Even the big earthling.

Charles,
It was either Laker Lover or Gunner without the cap locks. Maybe it was some Suns or Shaq fan who has issues with Kobe, but my instinct is one of those two guys.
If someone cannot say who they are, then they deserve no response. This is why I didn't even address the comments even though the first instinct was to bite on the bait.

Tim.
I would have no problem appending my name to any Tim-4-Show post without even reading it. I am that confident that you know whatever the hell you are posting about.
Kobe Bryant, the true MVP. And we don’t even need a bandwagon to know it. It’s really gratifying to see how many of us are suddenly seeing our team as if through the same eyes or glasses. It’s a wave not unlike what we are witnessing in the political arena.
It’s also almost as if the blog is alive and has developed its own identity and opinions that reflect its unique and varied constituency. The blog believes in Kobe, Drew, and Pau. It is starting to coalesce with support for Lamar. It wishes Smush, Kwame, Cook, Evans, and Shwame (my new name for Shaq) well but it is thrilled they are no longer Lakers. It is grateful to Jerry, Mitch, and Phil. And it knows the Lakers are on the verge of another dynasty. The only place where there is any uncertainty is exactly when we start winning championships again – this year or next year. Lakers and the blog rule.

Need more playing time for the Machine!
Sasha is doing a fine job creating balance in scoring even with the absence of Vlad and Ariza. We normally do not see Sasha the whole first quarter, then he comes out before the 1st half ends. He averages only 15.9 minutes per game. On the other hand Luke averages 24 minutes per game and can't be relied on his shooting. With Vlad out, it is more important to have Sasha on the floor.

Floyd,
Hands down Magic Johnson. Has played all positions and proved his value his first year with us. Constant intensity, flash, and a knack to create passes. (I would say he a Pistol Pete were the most dynamic passers.)

Re: 34 wins
Like I said the other day, it's too premature to talk about this stuff, but since it's out there already and let's face it, all of us thought about it at some point in the last week...
If there ever was a time to break the 71-72 Lakers record it would be RIGHT NOW with our last games of the season. YOU EVER NOTICE posted them and put the big ones in caps. There's 7 really challenging games on that list...
Essentially us winning 34 would amount to 7 really hard games, and 27 "should win" games.
There perhaps has never been a team that has the opportunity that we have. Still, it's a VERY long shot to presuppose that we can hit all 34 without stumbling.
We are better than the 8 game streak we're on though... one loss came in Atlanta when Kobe had tape everywhere on his hand, and another came when we did not cover the three point shot even though we were up by 3... then inbounded the ball to Kwame Brown hoping to win the game (Lamar airballed the pass back)...
In other words, the streak could already be a lot higher than it is now. But, these are just the type of things that cannot be forseen... 34 straight is asking for a lot...
But if anyone ever had a chance to do it, we do have that chance. One game at a time and get everyone healthy.

Just got free tickets to Clips/Celts tonight. Some kind of luxury box near the top of the arena with sofas and catered food. Should be interesting, too bad it's the Clips and not the Lakers though.
Is it bad if I wear Laker colors to a Clippers game? I don't look good in red.

memo the laker fans. Shaq does not care what we think. In fact he was once quoted as saying, "I'm not going to go and eat rat poison because they don't like me."
This was of course pre-whole page in the LA Times "thanking" us. Yeah right.
I'm just happy he's going to be directly responsible for the downfall of the Suns.

Seems to me he had some choice words directed at Kobe once upon a time regarding this same situation.
But whatever, this is ruining my good Laker mojo lol. Go Lakers!

LakerTom,
You're spot on as usual.
I think we all (certainly I do) wish Smush, Kwame, and Cook well.... and certainly we wish Shaq well, in addition to Mo Evans and J Critter... wish them all well, but are happy with the guys we have in their stead.
We have who we have, so no trade talk until the end of the season, and even then I'm guessing the talk will be very limited as who we're willing to part with.

MAMBA24 BACK IN THE HOUSE!??!?!
Man seeing that rollcall at the top of the blog is like... coming home for Christmas and seeing your mama wave to you from the porch. It's like opening up your morning paper and finding the Lakers at the top of the West.
Everything is right with the world.
Championship bandwagon? Me and LakerTom were the first ones talking championship back in November, if my memory serves me. But put me on - I feel weird not being on. Also put me on the NO MVP NO PEACE bandwagon - if Kobe doesn't win I am setting fire to Stern's eyebrows.
Hey, I heard a good idea - a blog watching party. Why not wait for the playoffs and all show up on one of those roadies where they charge 10 bucks to come into Staples and watch it on the jumbotron?
Floyd,
My favorite Laker has always been Magic. He came into the league when I was barely old enough to dribble a basketball, and he was always my hero. There was so much hype surrounding him coming into the league, and he lived up to all of it and then some. For me as a kid it was like good versus evil - the right way to play, and the wrong way to play. My best friend was a huge Jordan fan, and he was the epitome of the wrong way to play - scoring and scoring but no winning of anything meaningful. I always used to argue that if you counted Magic's assists, he was a better scorer than Jordan. In the 91 Finals I remember watching at the end of game two after the Lakers had taken the first game in Chicago, when Jordan changed hands in mid-air and scooped it past AC Green - I knew then and there we couldn't win - we didn't have a guy who could do that! The following Fall I was going through some heavy personal stuff - I ended up leaving home when I was 14. I left home November 7th, 1991, the day that Magic announced he was HIV positive... it felt like everything about my life and the world was over. So me and Magic, I feel like we've been through some serious stuff together, you know? Magic will always be my hero.
However, to be honest, Kobe is a close second in my heart. I've always identified heavily with Kobe - growing up, I was always the smart one, always the talented one that things came easy to. I was always so eager to show everyone how smart and special I was, and it made a lot of my peers really not like me very much. I didn't care - I had my own goals and I had a hard time relating to them, anyway. Then, as I got older, I realized what silly, avoidable mistakes I had made in my youth, and have striven to be a better person since. If Magic is my hero, then Kobe is my brother - he's only a couple of years younger than me, we both married young and had strained family relations because of it, we both have had to learn similar lessons... I feel a lot of kinship with Kobe. It was hard this summer, to see Kobe acting the way he was and feeling like he was turning his back on fans like me, who had defended him to people who didn't believe in him for years. I'm so happy that things are working out the way they are - seeing Kobe in another jersey would have made a little part of the idealistic sports fan in me die, the part that had Magic posters on my wall and dreamed of sitting on the floor at the Forum. Now I understand why Philadelphia fans are so bitter... ;)
Peace my Lakers family. All is right with the world.

J.Walter, Saturday night the Lakers got more cheers than the Clippers and about 5 seconds later DJ Dense (sp?) came on and told Laker fans to "go home". I say wear Laker colors for the hell of it. I have tickets ( Really, really good tickets) to Clippers vs. Pistons but I really don't want to see that blood bath, what should I do with them?
Posted by: Elle | February 25, 2008 at 12:26 PM
SBPimp,
I swear everything you said about Kobe is right on point with what I felt this summer and over the years.
I've spent each year of Kobe's career defending amongst my peers, explaining why he is the best, hated on unnecessarily, and underappreciated.
It's tuff. Then he pulls the trade stuff and I even backed that for awhile.
Anyway, I'm glad to be back on top. I am going to enjoy this ride more than any other championship run. I realize how tough it is to get a title. I'll never take a 3-peat or a run of dominance that lightly again!

I know this is the most ridiculous thought ever.
BUT, what would it take for Kobe to be the G.O.A.T?
I say he would need 9 total championships. Now, to say we will 6 titles is absolutely crazy, but I am just thinking that even if Kobe wins 3 more he will still always be regarded as the 2nd best.
Posted by: Korey | February 25, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Time to consider that 15th roster spot.
Right now the Lakers have 1 open roster spot. And Saturday is the
deadline for adding players for them to be eligible to play in the playoffs.
If everyone was healthy, I'd say forget about that 15th slot, but with
Bynum, Ariza, and Mihm out and with Rad rei-injuring himself and
Luke at times looking hobbled by playing through the ankle injury,
it might be a good idea to add a player just for a fallback position.
So do you think the Lakers should add a player?
And if so, who? or what position should they try to add some
depth at?
I'll make my comments in a separate post.
Posted by: Long Time Laker Fan | February 25, 2008 at 12:38 PM
Tim-4_show,
"I can't say how far our odds drop because I don't know how strong Bynum will be when he comes back. If he comes back at FULL strength, I think maybe we're 75% favorites, but if he's around eighty percent back (more likely) then we're probably around 55-60% favorites. In other words, very close to 50-50."
Agree; in addition, the perimeter defense is still a weakness; that will improve somewhat with Bynum's return, but probably needs to get better beyond that improvement to really contend. Ariza's return (if it happens) will help.
Posted by: exhelodrvr | February 25, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Bynum not back till April?
Wow!
There are only 8 games in April. By that time we will be in some type of 20 out of 23 game winning streak run.
Tom, Tim-4-Show, ery1, I'm telling you, it's looking more and more like Bynum's role this year will be the best 6th man in the league when he gets back!
I still think we can win it all...

I would rather Bynum come back healthy and with a couple practices with Pau under his belt rather just come back for the sake of the "8 weeks time thingy"..He needs to get his legs back under him, get his confidence in the knee back and comfortable going after the ball like before, just my thinking..
I am anxious to have him on the court cuz our D has suffered in some areas but at the same time, we are not just going for Playoffs as in years past, we are going for IT ALL! So he has to be right when he returns...

Lakers Legacy,
Separated by birth? Maybe separated by generations. I'm probably one of the oldest and wisest (lol) posters on the blog who has witnessed all 9 Los Angeles Laker championships (Minnesota Lakers won 5 titles). It's that history that justifies my always highly optimistic view of the Lakers. When you have seen so many championships in the past, it's easy when you see the same pattern repeating in the present. It's not rocket science. It's just recognizing the same signs.
Tim-4-Show is a much younger blogger and former track star who understands who the Lakers are and what made them great and successful in the past. Although just a pup, the man know his basketball and his Lakers.
That we and many other of the long-time regular posters often sound the same notes or see the same insights is probably due to our innate intelligence and the sharing of ideas and observations we have made on the blog over the years. After a few years, we become the blog.

Right now the whole world ( lovers , haters alike) rank Lakers no 1 in the league ( east & west ) almost unanimously ; nontheless don't get over-exicted , I still think we will win it all after this season, what do you think?

Okay Mamba24... I've never really been a big bandwagon guy, but add me to all bandwagons that LakerTom is on. I need to fully express my GHF viewpoint. LOL.
That pretty much takes care of all the bandwagons.
One additional note, the Kobe for MVP bandwagon, please put me at #24 in honor of KB24.
Okay! Tomorrow night, Blazers... Hugo will be watching the game at my humble abode.
We will have Colorado power in the house!
Hey, whoever wanted to know about a Sasha jersey... Hugo has every single one, home, away, sunday special! I think he even has a few of them signed...
The Face....
