6-12th Men of the Year

February 28, 2008 |  9:42 am

The NBA only hands out an official award to the first man off an NBA bench, but for the Lakers, their entire reserve panel's work merits some kind of cash prize, ribbon or smiley face.  If you ask one Kobe Bean Bryant, his pine boys are the cat's pajamas.  In particular, the work of Sasha Vujacic, Ronny Turiaf and Jordan Farmar has stood out in bright, shiny fashion.  Of course, if you're gonna credit the young Farmar, some props need to be simultaneously tossed in old man Fish's direction.  The effectiveness of the purple and gold bench has been pretty obvious all season, but if any further evidence of their prowess is required, compare the Laker second unit to that of their opponent during tonight's match against the hapless Heat.  Frankly, Miami's first unit ain't world's better.

September inspires Earth Wind and Fire to boogie, Neil Diamond to get sentimental and Kobe Bryant to have his hand fixed.

As the Cassell turns, his perceived quest to become P.J. Brown's teammate remains in limbo.  In the meantime, if a playoff team is interested in shopping at Bed, Bath and Giricek, it may be open for business.  And if these three or other free agents (wanna be or otherwise) don't join your roster, it's never too early to start thinking about the summer.

That sound you hear is the blogosphere puking in harmony at an LBJ milestone achieved.

On the plus side, Jamaal Tinsley's looking more upstanding to Pacers fans of late.

Tim 4 Show,

I, Never, believed in Kwame.

Good Afternoon Fellow Laker Fans and Others
Looks like anothr win tonight to me- can't wait until gametime.
DK- Thanks for posting the article by D Neiman on Kobe; a good read.

I was wondering if everyone else is keeping in shape the same way I am: by jumping on & off various Laker Bandwagons. I've gone from 50 to 55 wins and am now thinking 60 wins might be possible. I've been on & off the "trade LO" bandwagon so many times, I think I've pulled a calf muscle. Currently am in-between on the "What IS up with Luke?!" bandwagon.

Keeps those Wins (and Bandwagons) coming!
Go Lakers!

tim,

"I was on that bandwagon last year... I got on mid year after the Lakers lost like 3 in a row. I thought they'd fight their way back...
I was just "Tim" back then.

Like Jamie Sweet would say, "Search your feelings... you know it to be true"

You know what happens when you put an old timer like me in charge of something. LOL. I can't believe your name was not on the list. What a screwup. Anyway, I have asked Mamba to take over and fix it. Hopefully, he will take pity on me and take this over. lol. No Tim on the bandwagon is a BIIIIIIIIIG mistake. Mea Culpa.

Tom

Why are we giving all this coverage to a franchise that has never, ever, in the history of recorded time, won an NBA championship? Yeah, I"m including myself in the "we".

There's 26 other teams in the NBA. Let's focus on them...

....which, incidentally, is something that the Funs failed to do when they brought in The Big Sunset.

Xodus,

I believe that Steve said that the correct list was the MORON list, not the Iiot list. Karl, As a journalist, you need to be more careful and do more research. JK.

Tom

Hey all,

Read this blog and comments daily but its my first time posting. Laker fan all my life good and bad.Actiuallyl I am just an L.A. fan period. Looking for ward to tonights 10th win.

Purple and Gold!!!

Quoting: "Jesterguru - PLEASE - don't forget to wear your protective gear - a cup, a kevlar vest, whatever it takes. DON'T DIE ON US!!! It would be very traumatic to watch you get killed on TV by the Portland trolls. Leave the assassination attempt to KB24."

Like Ben Kenobi, if I am killed, it will only make me stronger.

The memory of my slaying will motivate the team another level and they will win a championship in my memory.

With two seconds left, trailing by two in game 7 of the finals, Lamar, seeing Kobe entangled in the arms of Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, will inbound to the only open player, the player whose man was doubling Mamba.

Pierce will notice and recover, but just as he gets within range of the block, he will be screened beautifully by Gasol, bounce off, and go spinning woundedly toward half court.

At that moment, as he catches the rock and faces up. my voice will appear in Walton's mind: "Use the force, Luke."

...And he will calmly close his eyes and loft the ball softly toward the basket for three. LAKERS WIN!

Then we all get to celebrate with Princess Leia. Or something.

Xodus,

Where is damb Brylle when you need him? Do we have any other Photoshop guys out there who can create a new 60-Win Bandwagon screen background and saver? Got to have Kobe, Drew, Pau, Lamar, and Fish and Trevor and all the current guys on it.

Do I hear any volunteers? And how about any T-shirt artists out there who can create a 60-Win T-Shirt image.
We could sell the shirts on the blog and give Mamba or another deserving blogger a couple of free tickets or just have a raffle. Or contribute the proceeds to a good cause.

Tom

Although I am thinking about the finals in June, I don't mind thinking about potential free agents. I think the bloggers with P. O'Bryant in mind, are very smart and wise. In seeing Mbenga, he lacks natural instincts, and seems like too much of a project. Although I know O'Bryant has had very little time on the floor, I think he is well worth the gamble. His size, length, and athleticism are all impressive. What i am really curious about is, why and how Mbenga was getting more PT than O'Bryant when he was with the Warriors to start the season. He was getting run, while O'Bryant was not. All and all, i know Nellie was hesitant to play B. Wright because of his youth and inexpierence, so that might explain why O'Bryant got buried on the back of the bench. It just concerns me that he hasn 't had any flashes of brillance, or even goodness for that matter. When it comes down to it, i am for the move, but at what salary can we afford to take him on at? He was after all the #9 overall pick, and i am willing to bet some organization would be willing to sign him to at half of the mid level exception. Just a thought, but I like how our bloggers, even with our current strength are addressing our weakness still. Backup center is an issue, when you consider that Pau is kind of soft as a 5.

I, Never, believed in Kwame and chanted my beliefs throughout this blog. Now, Kwame Brown has magically turned into Paul Gasol. Therefore, when I see what everyone calls "Pau Gasol", I envision Kwame Brown that I, Never, believed.

So maybe if I chant the same thing for Luke Walton, he'll magically turn into Ron Artest.

Jesse and Laker Bandit,

Hello! Purple and Gold baby!!!!

Everybody who had seen Shaq play at all this year knew it was a bad trade for Phoenix and a GENIUS move by Pat Riley. Got to give Riley his props, he rode Shaq into a championship and then was able to dump him for a pretty good player in the Matrix and wasn't stuck riding out Shaq's sunset years while taking down $20m per.

Shaq on back to back games will be a disaster, there's just not enough left in the tank. Next year should be even worse and Shaq has TWO MORE YEARS LEFT on his contract??? Owwwwwch! Ohhohohooo, SOMEBODY should be fired for this trade. I don't see how they even move Shaq's contract next year unless they take total garbage back in return. How much time does Nash have left? Phoenix might end up trading Nash by the trade deadline next year to start building for the future around Amare.

Buh bye Phoenix, you'll get booted by whoever you play in the first round of the playoffs this year and then next year possibly not even make the playoffs. See ya, wouldn't want to be ya...

Xodus,
"If the Suns' have an equal chance at losing in the first round before they did as they did after that qualifies it as a failure for several reasons I've gone over multiple times."

I don't believe I posted that they have an equal chance of losing in the first round.

Laker Truth siad it very well:
"The Suns with Marion had no chance against a healthy Laker squad, especially with Bynum dominating Amare in the paint. Translation - The Suns had no chance to win a title this year with the emergence of the Lakers. Bynum will have a much tougher time against Shaq's size (although I still expect Bynum to win that battle), and Amare has the edge against Gasol. In other words, the Suns with Shaq have a better chance against the Lakers than with Marion, which means they have a better chance at the title. The Suns will still lose, but at least they increased their odds of winning the title this year. "

LakerTom,

I'll try and do better next time. LOL

Eric M,
"Can you think of a single game in the last 25 where Luke contributed?"

You obviously haven't looked at the game logs.

I've seen o'bryant play out here in oakland a couple of times. He would be a very good young backup if he got the right coaching, I still remember how he controlled the middle against the lakers in pre season. My only real concern from what I've seen out here with him is that he is much more of a head case than he is lazy. He kind of has that artest type of mentality where he's just a few ants short of a picnic.

PLAYER RATER: MOST AND LEAST IMPROVED OVER SEASON
by Josh Whitling for ESPN.com
http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/basketball/fba/story?page=nbarater0228

A pretty objective look at Lamar Odom:

“Lamar Odom, SF/PF, Lakers (Season PR: 58; 30-day PR: 29; 15-day PR: 25; ADP: 48): The Lakers are scary with Odom, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant on the floor together. Double-digit boards are tough to find, only 14 players are averaging more than 10 per game this season, and Odom is one of them, plus he's averaging a career-high 49.5 field goal percentage, compared to his career mark of 45.6. Throw in the fact he's averaging 14.5 points, 11.6 boards, 4.5 assists, 0.8 steals, 0.7 blocks, 0.5 3s and 60.7 percent from the floor in February, and it's clear that Odom benefits from playing with other top players and is in line for a fantastic finish to the season.”

Tom

generic_one,

Wow... that's impressive. I'm not the only one out there that thinks in terms of cards! His story was almost verbatim how I characterized the Suns. Funny stuff!!

So Sam got his wish........Off to Boston with PJ Brown............It almost seems like a Payton Malone situation all over again....

Wow, the injury bug is running rampant in the NBA this season. A re-examination of Washington Wizards All-Star forward Caron Butler's hip revealed a small labral tear of the left joint, further complicating his return from injury.

We sure need our Lakers who are (relatively) healthy to stay that way. We're still really thin. I'd still like to see the Lakers pick up Ty Lue as insurance before the March 1 deadline.

Tonight I'd like to see the Lakers put the Heat in cold storage early. The sooner Coby Karl and DJ Mbenga grace the Staples floor, the better. Fans can never have too many tacos!

Sam Cassell is douce.

GO LAKERS!

If I hear MVP chants tomorrow night during the game, I'm putting the success at the soles of Jesterguru's feet!

You will get all the credit in the world... and like a make a wish foundation, you will bring me the one thing I'd like to see before the playoffs begin...

Thanks!

"The amazing thing about the Fisher for Smush and Pau for Kwame moves is that they were 3-time winner moves for the Lakers:

1) Got rid of players who were a huge liability – Smush and Kwame.
2) Added players who are huge assets – Fisher and Pau.
3) Opened the door for other key players – Lamar and Jordan."

The door has openned for Lamar Odom ever since he was traded to the Lakers. He just have not taken advantage of it the LAST FOUR YEARS, he has not inprove his game and he has never been comfortable with the triangle offense. Lamar Odom still showes us flashes of brilliance then hides for periods of days. Nothing has change in his game since his days with the Clippers. It's Lamar Odom basketball and it will be reliable, consistent and great.

Any player with greatness abilty will compete to the highest level to push himself. Challenge and responsibilty to be the 2nd option for a great team like the Lakers, he had all the chances and opportunity. You can't say he had done well in this aspect.

At best he was a good teammate and an above average role player.

But in the role the Lakers envisioned him, LAMAR has failed big time! That's why he is either traded next summer or take a huge salary cut. I think there will be NBA teams willing to sign him much more than the Lakers are prepared to offer him.

The cornerstone of this team in the frontline is now made up of...

Bynum, Gasol, Turiaf, Radmanovich and Ariza. Odom is not in the immediate list as far as salary balance is concerned.

Turiaf for energy and PF skills of the bench.
Vlad for spreading the floor for Bynum and Gasol.
Ariza for perimeter defending and excellent cut and strong finsher.

The three are perfect role players that does not cost much for the Lakers, it is what it is. Odom is the th eodd man out and Walton.

To all fans,

Who better than PJ and other Lakers coaches knows all the Shaq's shortcomings? And we're talking about circa 2004, as you all aware only wine gets better with age. Besides free throws, how about other teams namely SA killing us on pick and rolls because Shaq never comes up? How about sticking your hand in the face someone like Duncan or Gasol capable of shooting from mid range? How about never be in shape when training camp starts? The list can go on and on...

Charles,

Can I holla at chaa? Holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla, holla

LMFAO

I love that video

I am waffling on the 55 to 60 wins bandwagon....
Help me get to 60. I think it will be 57 or 58.

11/25 games left are teams that are on the playoff cusp and will be very desperate/scrappy/hyped up to win in last couple weeks.

I think the next away stretch will be tough but not as tough as the finishing out in April.

Jon K.

I think it's spelled deuce - but no he usually plays the point not shooting guard...

(just kidding...)

I'm cheering for Detroit or Orlando in the East... I know everyone wants the Celts this year, but I'd rather get them next year so they can experience total domination.

LakerTom,

This one's for you!

Big smiles here.

-------------------------------------------------

some day it will get old...

Taoshum,

"Got to give Riley his props, he rode Shaq into a championship and then was able to dump him for a pretty good player in the Matrix and wasn't stuck riding out Shaq's sunset years while taking down $20m per."

Excellent point. For being a GM and coach, Riles is doing ok. He jumped in and took Van Gundy's spot when he had a nucleus to work with, and got that ring.

I have a a feeling of uncertainty that Marion will be with the Heat for long though....

Elgin Baylor was a great player but as a GM? Ooooh, I'm going to say it's a bit pitchy, he's got some tone problems but he's trying to work it out, Paula would say he's wearing nice shoes and Simon would say his track record is hideous...

LakerTom and Jesse,

Glad you enjoyed the article. I'm patiently waiting to see more recognition and appreciation by writers and journalists outside of LA. I grew up in LA but have been living in the east coast for 7 years now, and at times it's frustrating to constantly see the local media's bias against Kobe contrasted with its blind support of Lebron and KG.

It feels as though the tide is finally changing -- I think we're all witnessing a very special time in which Kobe is elevated from a player who is adored by Lakers fans and begrudgingly acknowledged by others to a player who is praised and respected universally. This makes me proud. And the disappointments and letdowns we've all shared the past few years makes this moment that much sweeter.

Laker Tom,

Thanks for keeping the 55-win bandwagon alive.

Brylle,

That is an AWESOME wallpaper for the bandwagon! You have got skillz!

PS: 10 in a row, tonight!

With PHX fans choosing to come here rather than their own blog. It makes me wonder, what the heck do they blog about?

"Remember when we lost to the Celtics in the finals in the 70s, that was a great team!"

"No, no, our 90s team that lost to the Bulls in the finals was the best!"

"Hey all, I took a picture with Barkley at a casino!"

"I hope we raise another Pacific Division title banner again this year!"

and of course
"I want some attention from Laker fans, lets go post on their blogs"

Hello Charles,
BTW I'm not using another name, I don't try to hide no matter how unpopular I am here.

So I read your post and I thank you for replying to me.

1. Your upset that I crashed the blog with insults to your team (understandable). but
how else was I supposed to come? timid and nice asking for permission to blog here. I would of got ran in minutes plus I'm from the hated SUNS.

2. On the K bros question, Ya I missed that, I didn't read it.

3. punchlines like I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU HATE US. C'mon Charles I do understand why. I'd have to be def, dumb, and blind not to understand why, heck the whole league knows why b/c we knock you guys out of the playoffs 2 straight years. Same reason that king fans hate you guys, which brings me to Sonny. Sonny is welcomed here cause his team poses no competition to your team. I truly believe that. (dont call me a hater cause of it)

4.Smart bloggers, well I have said before this blog is full of smart bloggers, some are just smarter thats all. I have never called anyone dumb on this blog, never disrespected anyone on a personal level. Charles, so if you think I was calling the rest of the blog dumb thats your problem b/c I certainly wasn't. On the other hand Charles, you in your own way pretty much have called me dumb or stupid, with the question you asked me in your hubie post ( which I liked by the way). Can you spell Adroos and Bryens last name.
I compliment Nemaia Faletogo and Eagle Boy in posts b/c they don't have blinders on, meaning they know their team is good but not taking other teams for granted. Having blinders on is not insult some of you just need to realize that their is teams out there that can take you out, maybe not now but in the playoffs
its a different story i.e Dallas last year . Take your blinders off, alot of you are raving like your team already has the trophy in the bag, WRONG.

Cowards, I called some of you cowards b/c I hear all this talk about how big bad as@es your team is, but the afternoon of the SUNS game some of you were singing a tune of, Its just another game. I don't know, but that sounded like a bail out excuse just in case you lost that night.
The coolest kid in class, well that came about when you (Charles) tried to get everyone to ignore me. It reminded me of that cool kid in the back of the class who always wanted everyone to fallow him b/c he was just so cool. If you noticed though I have stop saying that realizing it may have been out of line, also getting old. The only times I would harp is when you would comment on something that I would say to other bloggers, other than that I wouldn't bring you up. OK maybe once when I said I'd gladly play a pick up game against you, but thats it. So no I don't harp on you, Actually I think it's the other way around. You pick at everything I comment through other bloggers, which is your choice and I'm not hating on that. ( a lil childish tho) After all this is a laker fan home so I expect blows coming my way.

So thats some of the reason I say what I say, If you do reply to me I will gladly respond to you Charles.

Oh ya I'm not going away and neither are the SUNS PLEASE BELIEVE.

Nik Kannan,
MBenga was signed by Nellie when he was still with the Mavs. I guess that's the main reason why he plays him more. POB was drafted when Montgomery was still the coach of the Warriors and it looks like he doesn't fit their run-and-gun style now. Nellie is really tough on rookies. Granted POB is no longer a rookie but he has hardly played so I still consider him one. The Warriors did not pick up his option for next year. They might consider signing him as a free agent but I'm guessing that it wouldn't be close to half the MLE. The knock on POB was that he seems lazy but there are Warriors bloggers who want Nellie to give him a chance. I'm curious what a good big man coach like KAJ and PJ can do with him. I think he fits the Lakers but maybe sign him for 2 yrs. $1.5-2 million per.

SamII ,

Thanks for the bio on POB!

Thirty2,

Both SC and GP have alien shaped heads too!

LakerTom,
Please add me to the 40 win bandwagon.

ExHelo,

I take it from your comment that you are saying that Luke is a solid contributor? Yes?

I doubt you will answer yes, because you will lose all credibility. So then what are you trying to say?

Luke makes two shots in a half and everyone goes CRAZY on the game threads. I think most everyone likes luke and wants him to succeed.

Sure he throws in an occasional 3 or gets a steal or rebound once in a while just by being in the right place.

Remember even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Luke is averaging 6 points, 3 rebounds, and shooting 32% from the 3 in 25 minutes a game. And as bad as that is, what doesn't show in the stats is his obvious fear to "Touch the ball or shoot" anymore.

I challenge you to find me a game where luke was a solid contributor. If you look through the entire season you might find 2 or 3. What about the other 50 where he didn't contribute?

Like I said before....I like Luke and hope he works it out, but I can't ignore reality.

The Clippers shouldn't have paid Sam-I-AM-A-JERK-Cassell one red cent.

Now he's off to strengthen the Celtics. Fricken great.

Something needs to be changed in the rules. This kind of stuff shouldn't be happening.

GO LAKERS!

Zakee,

Not only did we not trade Lamar Odom for Caron Butler BUT thank God we didn't! Caron's out, baby!

GO LAKERS!

Hey not to be a pain or anything but that 55 or 60 win bandwagon should have an asterick!! We wouldn't have reached 55 wins if we didnt get PAO! I said if we got injuries, we wouldn't make it and that has been a big thing with this team the last several years..

You guys are lucky PAO came here! Otherwise your predication would have been wrong!

TO EVERYONE:

March 1 is not the deadline for picking up a player. The Lakers could pick up a player anytime before the end of the season and still have them on the 15 man-roster.

The only important factor is that the player MUST NOT BE ON ANY OTHER TEAM'S ROSTER AFTER MARCH 1.

HOWEVER, in the playoffs, a team may only have 12 players active for each series. So having 15 players is unlikely to be beneficial unless the Lakers determine that Mihm, Ariza and a third player are not going to be able to play AT ALL in a series. Even then, the player we picked up would likely get little or no run in PJ's system.

If it came down to it, I would put my money on Coby Karl getting run before someone like Ty Lue.

Just the facts.

Laker Nation ---

Off topic. Since we are all family here -- some of you may want to re-evaluate whether to blog or not.

LekerTom - love the LO update....good stuff

The Lakers' second string are second to none!

Kobe's much talked about improvement is obviously a direct result of the major improvement of the young ones.

Give credit to all: the players first and foremost, the coaches, and, of course, Kobe. He was finally able to instill his winning ways to all the guys in the team, that includes the injured players.

And please, the Sacramento Kings use to call their guys "The Bench Mob" so let's come up with something better because our guys are definitely much better!

GO LAKERS!!!

Posted by: knowing is half the battle | February 28, 2008 at 10:15 AM

Sure how about the "other starting unit" or "Bench" or "Our Other Starters"

I would think that you guys would want the SUNS to play well
wouldn't you wan t to beat the SUNS when there at their best?
Guess not, you want easy opponents.
I want the best laker team in the WCF. Keep talking your all mighty talk, at the end it's just talk. Too much early celebration from some of you, it's gonna come around and bite you in the azz.
We'll see each other again this year, like I said before
Hats off to the winner, and if you guys get it you wont hear any excuse from me.
