Pins and needles

January 14, 2008 |  9:00 am

Bynum_hurt_2 It was Ronny Turiaf's birthday, Kobe was able to gut through his upper respiratory bug, and the media room was serving some delicious little tostadas.  That was some good news from Sunday's game at Staples.  The rest came almost exclusively in the final score- a narrowly taco worthy 100-99 win over the Grizzlies- and was totally overshadowed by the bad.  Andrew Bynum went down with an injury to his left knee early in the third quarter after landing on Lamar Odom's foot while reaching for a rebound.  X-rays were negative and Bynum was able to walk- albeit slowly and wearing a soft cast on his leg- out of the building.  Still, the extent of the injury won't be known until an MRI is taken today.  Given how vital Bynum, who is averaging 13/10 overall and 17/12 this month on 70% shooting, has been, it's no surprise that the wind went out of the Staples crowd when he went down.  Nor, really, that it went out of the Lakers, who scored only 39 points in the second half, shooting 28% from the floor, and saw a 13 point fourth quarter lead disappear

Scoring, as the box shows, was a pretty Kobe-based venture, though Javaris Crittenton had seven points in the fourth.

Ironically, it was Kwame Brown, who replaced Bynum in the lineup, who came through in the end for the Lakers. Granted, his play wasn't pretty throughout, but 54 hit a free throw with nine seconds left to break a 99-99 tie, and contested Kyle Lowry's drive at the end of the game to help preserve the win.   And, barring some sort of miracle (and creepy) resurrection of Laker greats from the days of yore, Brown will be the starting center for the time being, which should at the very least help 54 keep his knee loose, something that was tough for him coming off the bench.

The Lakers will travel to Seattle for tonight's game (7:00, KCAL) very thin, especially at forward.  Vlad Rad and Sasha Vujacic again won't play.

Oh man. Good morning Bloggers. I just hope Drew won't be out for the season and the team pulls together. Everybody tow the line!

I really hope Bynum is ok. If we lose him for an extended period of time, we will definitely be in trouble. This team has enough offensively to do ok without him, but we will really struggle defensively.

Kwame can not even begin to fill Bynum's shoes & even if Mihm were healthy he is only good for 10 minutes or less at this point of his career. I wonder if this will open up discussions for Jermaine O'Neal.

Does anyone have an update on the status of the MRI examination and the health of Bynum's knee? Could not help but think about last year when he went down. *Here is hoping for the best*

Hey do you guys notice how the bench stands up until the first Lakers' basket is scored? My friends and I have started doing this too...It's pretty cool everbody should start doing this.

Byum get better soon, my man.

I'm crossing my fingers, toes, and an array of body parts that Bynum knee is okay. I've never had a knee injury, even with my 40" vert, but I'

Hope Vlad and Sasha come back soon too.....that second unit isn't what it used to be without those options on the perimeter. Vlad is another big body we could use for the time being as well.

Kobe's little pep talk before the free throw got him out of his head.

That was an MVP move.

AK/BK

Do you know if Kwame has, or is working with a sports psychologist? Between he and LO, I think J Buss ought to put one on at the end of the bench.

I'm crossing my fingers, toes, and an array of body parts that Bynum knee is okay. I've never had a knee injury, even with my 40" vert, but I've had an array of ankle injuries that have slowed me down. Hopefully this is something he just gets through quickly and bounce back from easily.

Hope Vlad and Sasha come back soon too.....that second unit isn't what it used to be without those options on the perimeter. Vlad is another big body we could use for the time being as well.

I think it is now time to ban Mike T. from the blog, he and his voodoo dolls finally took out Drew and left us with a guy who misses layups, dunks, freethrows and who for some reason you can always count on to make a stupid foul

Am I the only one that almost cried last night when Andrew went down? And am I evil for thinking "Oh please god not Andrew, take Kwame, please take Kwame?"

"Hey do you guys notice how the bench stands up until the first Lakers' basket is scored? My friends and I have started doing this too...It's pretty cool everbody should start doing this."

I have never noticed that, cool stuff.

I'm hoping and thinking Bynum's injury isn't severe. You don't walk on your own power after tearing something. Probably a severe sprain at worst.

I'm not too worried though, Big D, no O Kwame will deliver. He's shown aggression lately, I think he's out to prove he should be a starter. Come to think of it, somebody else pointed out that Kwame won the game for the Lakers last night.

He made the foul which Navarro missed 2 FTs
He grabbed the Kobe tip and made a nice pass to Kobe for 2
Then he made 1 clutch FT.

Kwame's 100% clutch, we should get him to start making our technical freethrows.

Ok, maybe I'm getting a little carried away. But Kwame, Ronny will be fine.

After 2 seasons of the injury bug, the Lakers have progressed beyond living and dieing by 1 player. We'll be fine.

With Bynumite, we Dominate!

this is kwame's chance to earn a new contract somewhere else ,a real good chance to increase his stock and trade value, now getting major minutes. remeber two years ago right before we went into the playoffs kwame played excellent ,the reason he siad was, he wasnt looking over his shoulder wondering if he was gonna get yanked from the game if he messed up,so now for a little while he doesnt have to look over his shoulder and can play for a nice contract somewhere else, or go via trade and be a starter somewhere so there is some good of this

I've got a feeling we come back to earth in the nest week or two. Maybe 500 over the next 8 games. Just felt tis coming for some reason. Sad.

REPOST

UTZWORLD'S WORD OF THE DAY:

APOLOGY

Dear Jim Buss. I have flamed you darn near all season long about being the real cancer to Laker Nation. I simply did not believe that you had the wisdom and insight to restore Laker Nation back to it's rightful place. When you and Mitch failed to trade Odom & Drew for KG, I declared full on war with you. I knew that, by being the architect behind the drafting of Drew, you were trying to cement your own legacy by creating a 21st century All Star Laker Center. I thought you were stupid and foolish.

I was wrong.

When Drew's knee buckled and he went down last night, horror was on my face. Why? Not because of the thought of 6-8 weeks of Cake Boy Butterfingers as our starting center. But because I fully understand what you were doing, Jimbo. I underestimated you. I took for granted that you had a front row seat to the dynasty that is The Los Angeles Lakers. You have known all along - as ALL OF US SHOULD HAVE - that, in Laker Nation, we live and die by the strength of our CENTERS. To be a CENTER in Laker Nation is ICONIC. It is the ultimate spotlight. It is the glue that has led us to the Promised Land time and time again. And you felt Andrew Bynum had the mojo to enter that fabled role. Not only that, you handpicked El Capitan - THE MOST ICONIC CENTER OF THEM ALL - to show him the tricks of the trade.

He's got it. Despite what Mike T the Glue Sniffer things, Drew's got it.

20-10 games? Check. Double Doubles? Check. Even the SKYHOOK was rumored to make a reappearance!

And you saw it coming, Jimbo.

And now, all of Laker Nation (except for Mr. Glue Sniffer) is awaiting the news of that MRI. We're scared. And rightfully so. Andrew Bynum was rapidly ascending up the ladder to take his place in the Circle of Laker Nation. And you saw it before all of us did.

For doubting you, for flaming you, for mistrusting you, I apologize to you, Jim Buss. I'm standing right along side you, brother - and the rest of Laker Nation - as we hope and pray for the best.

And is Mamba back from vacation? We desperately need a pep-talk!

this was one of the worst things to happen. why bynum? lakers were running on all cylinders, playing great. we are about to play some top teams and were going to show them just how good we are. hopefully this injury is only a few weeks. play 500 ball then come back and get healthy for the playoffs. just hoping its not last year all over.

another thing im scared about is bynum playing "scared" when he comes back. i hope that he can put this scare behind him and not even think about it. i hope when he comes back he picks up where he left off.

i hate kwame brown. hes a loser. you can tell he doesnt care at all about the game of winning. on a few occasions last night he was laughing after a blown play or a bad play. he clearly doesnt have the drive to get better or even give it his all. i just pray he can some what pull while drews out.

javaris has game. you see those crossovers and shots? hes going to be really really good in a few years.

what time is bynums mri?

GO LAKERS

where's mamba24? on one of his blog vacations?

we need his optimism and laker pride on the blog, especially at a time like this.

mamba24, what say you?

A telling sign of the Lakers' improvement: SG Kobe Bryant's scoring and minutes are down. But don't think his confidence has wavered. Lakers coach Phil Jackson told reporters that during a timeout against the Hornets last week, Bryant was demanding the ball because of the 5-inch advantage he had on his defender. Jackson told Bryant that, yes, the Lakers should always try to take advantage of mismatches. Bryant's retort: "I have a mismatch every game."

funny haha, i guess we'll get to see ithe truth of that more often in the next few games

not only will it suck for the lakers, but he's carrying my fantasy team. please no torn ligaments...

Congrats to PJ for tieing Bill Fitch in career wins! I thnk that the Lakers have a great chance even without Bynum to beat The Sonics. Things will be alright, just come out of Seattle with a win and practice your game plan Tuesday and Wednesday to beat PHX on Thursaday. Go Lakers!

we're #1 on nba.coms power rankings. too bad thats only going to last one week. prove me wrong kwame, prove me wrong.

This sucks...Bynum was the real deal. I hope its only 4-6 weeks.

Thankfully, we didn't trade Kwame for Swift or , we'd be in some serious do-do.

Sure Kwame's overpaid but he's still one of the NBA's best Defensive Centers and an underrated passer...just don't ask him to score.

I have a feeling Dallas loses tonight and the Lakers will win for Bynum.

If that happens, Lakers will be kings of the Western Conference...at least for a day.

Take That! TradeMongers.

The Lakers have a history of making late announcements and downplaying player's injuries. Maybe they are just overly optimistic. Or they just don't want to lose ticket sales. They have a history of bringing back players too soon (Especially KEY players), and then they end up on the bench again..

From a psychological and physical standpoint, I hope AB can get through this...

And if your listening AB (like Mike T says), Keep up with the good nutrition and work on your upper body strength while your out. I wish you a speedy recovery!!!

With Bynum out, that leaves the PF/C options at 3 - LO, Ronny and Kwame (next tallest player is Ariza) - for at least up through the all-star break. That's 16 games, 12 of which are on the road. I'm going to think positive and hope the team goes .500 over that span, leaving the record at 33-19 when Drew is able to rejoin the team. Compensating for the lack of size on the front line is going to be taxing on the remaining bigs. There will be a period of transition as the team figures out a new way to play. Then there will be a period of transition when Drew comes back - along with getting him back into condition. It's going to be a tough storm to weather.

JANUARY 14 2007
THE YEAR OF THE LAKERS HAS ARRIVED - NBA BE AFRAID BE VERY AFRAID
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TONIGHT FIRST PLACE IS OURS!! SUNS, SPURS AND PRETENDERS IT’S TIME TO REAP
WHAT YOU HAVE SOWN THE LAKERS ARE BACK TO RECLAIM THEIR THRONE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BALLAD OF THE LAKERS 3.0
It was the start of a new year and all was quiet
the Lakers were 25 and 11, now aint that a riot
A buzz was spreading throughout the NBA
Realizing these Lakers were here to stay.
In the off season some blockbuster deals were made
The Lakers stayed with the hand they were played
Boston got KG and Houston got Stevie Franchise
The Lakers got Heart and game , SURPRISE!
The Lakers got something no free agent can provide
It starts with the Heart and its called Laker Pride
So now you dont hear no more Ship his Ass
Instead you hear cheers of damn please Bynum heal fast.
And Kwame yes Kwame will start once more
Whats that you say, Ship his ass out the door!
The Lakers are a team other teams fear to play
If you aint on your game they’ll rip your heart away
I had a dream and the following is true
If you don’t believe, then the hell with you
The regular season ended and they were so great
They broke the Bulls record they were 74 and 8
Then came the Playoffs and Im sure that you know
They ended up winning 16 in a row.
Mitch cried for joy and Jim gave up the crack
Jerry retook his Office the Lakers were Back
9Rings became 10 which made Phil the Best
For three years in a row The Lakers ruled the West
For each of those years Kobe won the MVP
Then Kobe retired and handed Bynum the Keys
But Bynum said NO! Kobe we both can drive
So when Kobe retired instead of 3 they won 5.
Which gave Kobe 8 NBA Titles and 5 MVPs
And Kobe not MJ became greatest in NBA history
And one final thing that the haters should be told
When Kobe retired he proudly wore Purple and Gold
The moral of this story, don't get me started
Purple and Gold and Kobe will never be parted

Wonder what time the MRI is scheduled for? Anyone got a scoop? AK? BK? When should we expect to hear something?

Think about this...

If Sacramento could pull an upset on Dallas tonight, and if the Lakers win,
then the Lakers will be in first place in the West!

I'm so pyssed at the Clippers - they had a 2 point lead on Dallas with 26
seconds left and managed to lose. If not for that, the Lakers would currently
be 2nd in the conference.

So for tonight:

Go Sacramento and Go Lakers!

It's time for renewed vestment of our perimeter defense.

I think we've gotten relaxed some the past two games.... both were very ugly.

Good thing for us, the Sonics are horrible... a big game by Kobe tonight will be what it takes. It's Thursday's game we need to be ready for. You know PHX is thirsty to beat us & missing our second best player isn't going to make it any easier.

Come on guys... DEFENSE, it's our only chance.

Mamba,

Welcome back. Just when the storm hits and everyone becomes frightful... out on the rough sea appears a blogger. His name is Mamba.

"Mamba, if that is really you, let me walk out to you"

Time for the Lakers to follow Mamba's lead and walk on water.

Kwame cares...

OK, I have no way of knowing this, but every physical sign I see says the Kwam cares too much as opposed to the way he's normally described here. The end result is the same, but bad play is not necessarily a sign of not caring. His rushing every move and shot is more evidence of his anxiety about failure.

Yes, he's not the first in the gym but he's also never been the healthiest. Yes, he hasn't worked with Kareem but... I don't have an answer for that one.

He obviously cares about how he fits in, how he's perceived. He's a kid that needs a hug, not a jab in his emotional side. Kobe got him out of his head at the free throw line, and it worked out... this time.

He'll slow down and do do better with PT. He's not the Laker's championship center, but he's our guy now.
GO Kwame, or better SLOOOW, Kwame

all i have to say is -- damn man!

i cannot believe we lose drew just as we were peaking and about to take on the big boys in the conference.

Shmit!!!!!

irony?! what goes up comes down (or vice-versa)

bynum is the most efficient player in the nba @ .636

http://www.nba.com/statistics/player/FieldGS.jsp

and the lakers are

http://www.nba.com/powerrankings/index.html

Vman,

I thought it was funny last night BEFORE drew was hurt, Kwame came in for the first time and did a turn around lay-up that went off the rim and Joel Meyers says "Kwame missed AGAIN"... even though it was his FIRST shot of the game.

We are fickle fans. He's had something like 7 seasons to learn how to make a lay-up.

Still, if there was ever a time to cheer and hope this man has it in him to step it up, it's now.

The only silver lining I can think of... the team will HAVE to focus and will HAVE to execute perfectly with Drew out. I think they were getting high on themselves after blowing out Memphis and New Orleans like that.... time for a reality check, or as Fish would call it, Humble Pie.

Ok, we've tasted the humble pie with Drew being out, let's step it up, we can still WIN these games!

Long Time Laker Fan,

I was thinking the same thing about the Clippers, I actually watched that game cheering them on. They totally blew the last few minutes of the game. Missed Free Throws and Tim Thomas shooting at the end with 8 seconds left. He should have waited til 3 seconds and shot a long ball. The rebound would have eaten up most of the remaining 3 seconds.

Instead Mavs get the ball with 8 seconds and the Lakers miss a chance at Top seed in the West.

i_dont_want_to_be_like_Mike,

Awesome, didn't know the Lakers were at the top today. Of course it doesn't matter but it feels good.

Besides, the Pistons got hammered by the Knicks???????
Boston lost to Charlotte
Spurs lost a few ones
Phoenix has lost to the Lakers
Dallas still missing it's mojo, only barely beating teams like the Clippers.

When will we know the results of the MRI?

GO LAKERS!

why is it when bynum gets injured all i can think of is mike t.

I like Kwame and I hope he wins a starting position. Just not at the 5 I'd prefer him at the four. I feel bad that drew got hurt, the young kid is playing great. It's too bad but I hope Kwame can sieze the oppurtunity and win a spot just not Drew's. I hope he can pull Walton out the starting lineup and take the four from LO and move him to the three.

Alec, you are not the only one who thought about Mike T. as soon as drew went down.

Welcome Back Mamba24!

When can we expect an update on Bynum's condition?

"I was scared. Drewski is like my big little brother," Turiaf said. "We came in together, so I really care about him. I saw him grab his knee and I was real worried."

Ronny calls Bynum Drewski....That's one of the most awesome things I've ever read. I didn't think it possible, but I love Ronny even more then I did.

If I haven't said it before, Ronny Turiaf is the Effing MAN.

HOPEFULLY BYNUM IS FINE.
BUT FROM THE PICTURE THE KID SURE DOES HAVE A WEIRD LOOKING KNEE.

Bynumite,

>>>Tim Thomas shooting at the end with 8 seconds left. He should have waited
>>>til 3 seconds and shot a long ball.

Yeah, I watched it too. If I was the coach, I would have called time out and ordered the
team not to shoot. If they'd have just held the ball and not taken a shot at all, it would
have left Dallas with 2 seconds, so they'd only have had time for a desperation shot,
instead of moving the ball around a few times until they found the open shooter.

Oh well. Over the next couple of weeks, the Lakers will have a chance to EARN the
top spot in the West. If the Lakers can beat Phoenix, Denver, San Antonio, and
Dallas (ESPECIALLY if they can beat those four teams without Bynum), then they
will be #1 and nobody can say otherwise.

My prediction if Bynum is out is that they'll still go 2 of 4 against those 4 teams.

Get well soon Socks (and Machine, and Snowboarder, and Mihm), we need you.

Elle,

Has Mike T. been posting lately? I haven;t been here much the past couple of weeks, but I hadn't seen him much since Bynum pretty much proved him wrong. I hope his youth lets him hel fast because injuries for this team ALWAYS seem to keep a player out longer than expected or be worse than thought at first, which makes me question the Lakers training staff. Kwame, Mihm, Vlad, Lamar, etc. It seems to be a trend that when a player gets hurt. It worsens before it improves, and 1-2 weeks usually turns into 4-5. Let's hope this is not the case this time.

Mr Mamba 24,

Welcome back, sir. Amazing! I feel more positive already.
Bring on Seattle!

Chris Webber has just said on real gm that he will be back in 2 weeks with a new team...
....could it be...

"utzworld THE BANNER HOLDER, man I could see that banner waving a thousand miles away."

Hey Mamba. I apologized to Jim Buss today. Go back near the top of today's thread for my Word Of The Day.

XODUS,
"Welcome Back Mamba24! When can we expect an update on Bynum's condition?"
Thanks Xodus. I know this may sound corny as hell but I think if each of the Laker
Blogg family take a few minutes sometime today and just say a little prayer
for Baby Brother Bynum then this too shall pass. I mean it can't hurt.

There was an article on yahoo.com sports stating that Chris Webber will return and play for a new team. Webber has narrowed his choices down to three teams but refuses to name those teams. My guess is that he'll become a Laker in two weeks to help shore up our frontline and give us some scoring and great passing from the post.

"Has Mike T. been posting lately?"

The Delusional One was all but doing cartwheels last night during the In-Game Blog when Kwame was handed the reins. With all his pep talking and what not, Mike T. still couldn't will Kwame's @$$ to make a friggin 2 handed dunk!
