Live from Staples- Lakers vs. Clippers
It's the BATTLE FOR THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF L.A. BASKETBALL FANS!!!
Okay, not really, but it's fun to use caps and exclamation points sometimes. BK with Q1.
FIRST QUARTER:
Clips trot out Kaman and Maggette with Ross, Knight, and Paul Davis. I doubt that's what Elgin Baylor hoped to have on the board in, say, late May.
9:21- Kobe short on a jumper. It'll be interesting to see what kind of hop he has on those shots tonight. If he can get the necessary lift, the Lakers will be in good shape... and with that he hits a nice little fallaway. Good sign.
7:26- Stops and pops in Q. Ross' face, does Kobe. Early returns are very encouraging. Offensively, the Lakers are doing a great job early of generating excellent opportunities. Not making all of them, but still getting great looks. On the other end, Kobe has to pick up Q Ross, so that's not a rough assignment. At least he won't have to work a ton there.
5:50- Fish to Bynum on the screen and roll, alley oop. On the previous possession, Drew put a nice move on Kaman and hit the baby hook. Good start for Drew early. Four points, a board, three blocks, and Kaman has missed his first five shots.
Timeout on the floor (5:41). 16-10, LAL. Take out some scores off raggedy play from LAC, and the gap gets even wider. Kaman's at the line for two, which would cut the lead, but thus far the Lakers are playing a very solid game on both ends. Smooth, efficient. Kaman makes one of two, Lakers by five.
Kobe hits on the other end. Then on the next trip, drills a three. I'm going to call the groin problem a non-factor, for the time being. Nine points, five shots, four makes.
4:35- Drew skies up to get a tipped ball on the screen and roll. One of the best things about him is, unlike some tall players, he actually uses his length. He gets up and extends to his body, using his full length to get the ball, whether coming off the glass, or in this case, dropping out of the air.
Meanwhile the Clips turn the ball over, then Maggette launches an air ball on the next trip down. Lakers by 11, and thus far, at least, the purple and gold are ruining Mike Dunleavy's weekend.
2:45- Timeout on the floor, Lakers up 25-11. There isn't a statistical category the Lakers aren't dominating right now, short of rebounding. The Clips are under 30%, the Lakers near 60%. 7-3 in dimes, 4-0 in blocks, 2-4 in TOs. They're moving a lot of offense to the rim, but not forcing too much. Just taking care of business.
Coming out of the TO, Vlad replaces Walton. Farmar already on the floor for Fish.
LO to the line, with a minute left in the first. makes one of two, and the Lakers have a 29-11. Clipper Daryl is trying to do his thing. He's not getting much love from the crowd, nor does it seem to be helping the red, white, and blue all that much.
:15- Kaman finally gets a bucket, but it comes off a tip in after a Clippers miss (Mobley, I believe, nicely adjusted by Drew).
END OF THE FIRST- Lakers lead 29-15. Hard to argue with this start. AK will have the second, and remember, my +/- is +14. If things go sour over the next 12, blame him. I pulled my weight.
SECOND QUARTER:
Just for the record, BK might have a better +/-, but those stats don't matter because I do a better job protecting the rim. That's just a fact.
No Kobe or LO to kick the frame off. it would be nice if these guys (Ariza, Farmar, Mihm, Sasha, Vlad) can keep the large lead intact for a pleasant stretch so the leading Laker scorers (and in particular, a groined out Kobe) can get some rest. Back to back triples from Vlad and Farmar do their part to make the initially possible.
8:52 - Ariza's been admirably hellbent for leather so far when it comes to attacking the rim, but the actual makes-to-misses percentage hasn't shaken out in his favor. But this time, he gets to the line as a result of a converted reverse layup waved through traffic. A very nice move for the newest Laker.
8:08 - Mihm backs Kaman down, gets the position, lets the jump hook fly.. and it rattles in and out. Thankfully, Ariza's there for the putback, but it marks yet another instance of Mihm just not looking quite right on shots typically made with relative ease pre-injury. And on the other end, he's getting used by Kaman, who began the quarter 1-8 from the field and is now 3-10. Bynum checks in, with LO quickly on his heels.
5:38 - With the lead down to 8 after a three point play by the wee Dan Dickau, a 14-footer by Kaman and a long jumper from Dickau, Kobe checks back in and wastes no time canning a 15-footer. With the and-one miss, the Laker lead is back to 10.
4:38 - Luke's left way the hell wide open behind the arc, unguarded to the point where I say to myself, "Dude's just gotta make that shot." Thankfully, no worries, as the ball gets drained.
4:08 - The feed inside from Luke to Drew, who scores courtesy a sweet spinning layup by Drew in traffic. That, friends, is good stuff. With 8 points, 3 boards and 3 blocks, Bynum is currently way ahead in the mano y' mano battle with Kaman, who did almost all of his damage with Kareem's protege on the bench.
1:26 - In the span of about 30 seconds, Bynum blocks both Richie Frahm (not necessarily all that impressive) and Kaman (considrably more impressive). That's five blocks for Drew this half.
.39 - Kobe bricks a pass to Bynum, sailing it off the backboard and into Maggette's hands. It's so off, even Kobe has to laugh.
The half ends 57-44 Lakers.
THIRD QUARTER:
Clearly, AK doesn't know how to extend a lead. I'll see what I can do. It would be nice to give Kobe's groin a little extra rest in the fourth. The rest of him, too.
9:50: Fisher picks up his fourth foul. That'll give some extended minutes to Farmar.
Walton hits a three at the top of the key. Nice to see him playing a good, consistent game. He's been in the flow of the offense, has done a nice job distributing, and is hitting from outside. Much, much better effort from 4 tonight.
8:52- Kobe hits on one of the damn near most impossible looking and-ones I think I've ever seen. Q Ross was basically in his lap. Hits the FT, Lakers up 67-49.
6:31- Kobe hits two more FTs, and the lead is up to 16.
6:16- Kaman slips inside Drew off the Davis miss, and gets to the line, via the Drew foul. It's one of the only times tonight that Kamn has found an opening and beaten Bynum to it.
Lead down to 14, but LO is going to the line. It would be nice to see the Lakers hit the gas here in the final 5:35 to stretch this thing out to 20 or so. Odom can push the lead to 16 with one more FT... but he misses.
5:18- Great steal from Luke on Maggette. He jumped the screen, and tied him up in a big way, then stripped the ball. Good D, 15 points. It's fair to say everything's coming up Luke tonight. Too early to say he's turned the corner, but it's certainly encouraging.
4:08- Great recognition by Drew on the Maggette layup. Maggette had position, and the ball was in the hoop. All Drew could have done was picked up his fourth foul. Not much good could have come out of it. Smart play not to pick up the cheapie. It's that sort of recognition that will help keep him on the floor more w/o picking up serious foul trouble.
3:00- A tough Mihm shot breaks an 8-0 Clippers run, but then Maggette gets inside and makes an easy layup to cut the lead back to 11. This has been a problem with the Lakers all year. Given the opportunity to put a team away, they don't. Not that they're in danger of losing right now, but they also haven't put it in high gear and given themselves a victory lap in the fourth.
Kobe draws another foul on Thornton- apparently, AT didn't get the memo that Kobe likes to pump fake, because he's bit at least a couple times tonight- so coming out of the LAC timeout (one perhaps in which Mike Dunleavy will remind Thornton about the whole pump fake thing), the Lakers can push it back to 13. Tough spot for the Lakers right now with Drew on the bench. If I'm the Clippers, I pound on Mihm as much as humanly possible...
1:25- Sasha Vujacic one on one against Richie Frahm. That's what the people come to see.
:30- Maggette hits two FTs, to cut the Laker lead to nine, and give himself 18 for the quarter. That's a nice 12 minutes...
Holy crap! He hits the prayer at the end of the quarter for three. 21 for the quarter, and the Lakers will now enter the fourth up by only six. LAC finishes the quarter on an 18-5 run to finish the quarter, much of it coming after Drew picked up his fourth...
AK will have the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
10:48 - Sasha catches the pass from Kobe behind the arc, dribble step just inside, then drills one over Richie Frahm's head. A classic play to mark a classic matchup: Vujacic v. Frahm. That's what the people paid good money to see. And thus far, advantage Vujacic.
8:57 - But the see saw battle takes another turn. A Laker possession features much dribbling from Sasha, eventually winding up as a missed three pointer with a lot of Richie Frahm nearby throughout. In this particular case, Frahm... wait for it... comes alive.
6:38 - Cuttino Mobley gets upset for some reason after sinking a layup. Violet Palmer's having none of it and immediately T's him up. Sasha sinks the technical freebie, then quickly adds a trey ball to his resume. It wasn't over Frahm, but still, the crowd seemed to like it. Especially since it put the Lakers up by 20.
5:46 - The Lakers reenter the game after the timeout with The Critter getting some run. Human victory cigar time, perhaps?
4:13 - Luke checks in to replace Kobe, who gets some well deserved cheers after putting up 32 points, 8 boards and 3 assists on a groin that must hurt like a mother. When it comes to playing through ridiculous pain on a regular basis, there likely isn't anybody in the league better than The New Jack Bauer.
2:29 - Sasha drills another trey ball, again another three points at the expense of the guy BK and I have arbitrarily declared his nemesis, one Richie Frahm. The newest Clipper will start having flashbacks the next time he hears the word, "Slovenia."
2;19 - Ronny Turiaf enters the action for the first time after the timeout, putting the tally of Zags (Turiaf, Dickau, Frahm) on the floor at 3. I'm not bothering to do the research, but I'm pretty sure that's an NBA record.
Final score. Lakers 113, Clips 92. Pretty much a slaughter from start to finish and with the exception of a third quarter run that was more Corey Maggette (21 points) than concerted red, white and blue, the Lakers' opponents brought little in the way of fear to the proceedings. We gotta run so Stu and Joel can do their thing (they're filmed where we sit), but thanks for dropping by.

Paul Davis is starting? That's weird, but then again, Dunlevy likes to do some odd things as coach.

AK, BK, rest of bloggers
I'd just like to point that as much as I have been critical of Kobe Bryant, today I cannot be. Today I had the pleasure of representing a sponsor for the Annual Boyle Heights Miracle on 1st Street. For the whole day a bunch of companies give a way really nice free toys to kids and families who really need it. Today Kobe Bryant came on behalf of the Nike campaign which donates money to local neighborhoods to build athletic facilities like bball courts, soccer fields, etc. Today Kobe presented at $20K check to the Hollenbeck Youth Center in East LA. He was all smiles and he also stayed around for a while to hand out gifts to families and take some pictures and autograph jerseys, ball etc.
It is fitting because while I never really thought about, Kobe was a confirmed guest awhile ago to come to this event...and I never made the connection that it was December 15th until a few days ago. So today a bunch of really happy kids chanted Kobe's name and some people said "stay kobe" young and old and it was a really nice experience. Yeah and even though Kobe hurt his groin, lost a close nail bitter, and probably got home to his family late last night, he still showed up to East LA.
So today I felt a glimmer a happiness because here it was, the day he was supposed to be gone, but yet he was still here, an icon of Los Angeles, helping a neighborhood of mine.
Go Lakers!

Early report on the Bynum/Kaman match-up.
Right now Bynum has the advantage in points, while Kaman has the advantage in rebounds.
But the real match is in the position that they get on each other.
Kaman EASILY backs Bynum down to the rim. Kaman missed his shots and had one by Bynum.
On the other end Kaman isn't allowing Bynum to push him at all. Bynum did hit a nice little banker for 2 points and slipped on pic' 'n roll for 2 more points.
I'm convinced that Andrew Bynum is too weak to hold the post down. This guy gets backed down too easily. We're so early in the season that I have no doubt that Bynum is going to fade as the season goes on.
Bynum is long, which serves him as he alters shots, but the guy is too weak to keep the ball from getting close to the rim. In the long run his length is going to fail him for the phyiscality of the game.
Mark my words.

So far so good, looking at the boxscore and play by play. I must say, Odom is the new Shaq...at shooting freethrows....
Posted by: Gilly | December 16, 2007 at 07:11 PM
Farmar, Sasha, Vlad, Mihm, Ariza. You wonder where the O will come from with this group. This is a good matchup to give Mihm a little run. Once Kaman is out of the game, the Clips really don't have much of a front court presence.
Lead down to 12... now up to 15 w/ a Farmar triple. Nice.

Bynum did real well against Kaman in the first. I guess you don't need tree trunk calves to defend the post against one of the league's best bigs.

Clipper Daryl...haha i can hear him from through the tv....followed by boos haha

Who is Magette playing for? That looked like a lay up
Posted by: bobie | December 16, 2007 at 07:18 PM
Four straight shots for the Clips, including two chippies for Kaman. That'll bring LO and Drew back into the game.
BK
Posted by: Brian Kamenetzky | December 16, 2007 at 07:19 PM
In the first quarter Bynum had 4 points and 1 rebound. Kaman had 3 points and 6 rebounds.
Andrew's length is bothering Kaman down low but he has NO PROBLEM AT ALL BACKING BYNUM DOWN.

Mike T,
You're so full of it. I just watched Bynum back Kaman right up under the hoop
and get a hook from about 1 foot. Bynum is almost as strong as Kwame
already and Drew's got more brains, heart, and courage than Kwame will
ever have. Perhaps Kwame should go visit the Wizard of Oz. You seem
to have him living in some fantasy world, so maybe it could happen.
Posted by: Long Time Laker Fan | December 16, 2007 at 07:24 PM
Bynum should be an all-star next year.
Kaman should be an all-star this year.

im listening to the game online since i cant get any video of the game. and it got me to thinking how incredibly good chick hearn was at commentating for the games. its so hard to follow whats going on in the game sometimes. really miss chick. spero does a pretty good job, but he needs to develop some type of style or signature thing. on the nba classics game and stuff, wish they had a game where you could hear chick commenting again. i dont think ive heard him on any of those games
Posted by: andand | December 16, 2007 at 07:27 PM
Did you see the entry pass to Kaman? What happened? The Lakers doubled on Kaman. Then Kaman passed the ball out for a Clippers 3 pointer.
The Lakers know that Bynum isn't strong enough to hold the post or else they wouldn't double on Kaman.
What that means is that in the long run the physciality of the game is going to bite Bynum and the Lakers in the ass like it did last season.

LTLF,
I'm beginning t think there's no pint in arguing. I saw the same play you're talking about but chose not to say anything. He's going to believe whatever he wants to believe.

Kaman sure is abusing Bynum like he did Chris Mihm..................................hahahahahahahahaha

I hope Jordan was watching D-Fish guarding Dan Dickau. Jordan was playing him pretty soft in the 2nd quarter.

kaman is starting to take bynum out to the perimeter since he cant seem to get a good shot off in the paint..... WAY TO PUSH BABY BYNUM AROUND IN THE BOX, CHRIS!
Posted by: sixonezero | December 16, 2007 at 07:35 PM
the Lakers picked up a new assistant coach sitting at the end of the bench to help our bigs with their defense. KWAME BROWN. kid looks good in a suit.
Posted by: sixonezero | December 16, 2007 at 07:38 PM
I said Kaman was having trouble with Bynum's length but backing Bynum down...Kaman is having no trouble with that.
Read my report. That's what I said.

The Lakers should be up by more than 13 at the half. Kobe is playing well despite his injury. Ronny should have started so Walton can play with the second unit. Farmar, Sasha, Vlad, Trevor, and Mihm is just not a good combination.
Posted by: Rick Friedman | December 16, 2007 at 07:41 PM
another great quarter! the defense looks solid! I really like how LO took maggette out of this one so far. bynum and his five blocks is just as great. keep it up!

KWAME BROWN IS AS GOOD ASS GONE.................HOPEFULLY HE TAKES LUKE AN LO WITH HIM
Posted by: COMPTON FINEST | December 16, 2007 at 07:42 PM
Kaman has 12 points, but on 14 shots. Excellent defense on him by Bynum, as well as excellent help defense by Bynum. It's nice to be able to expect that again from a Lakers center.
Posted by: exhelodrvr | December 16, 2007 at 07:44 PM
See here's the thing. Bynum got abused in the Boston game against a guy named Perkins.
Just like Kaman EASILY backs Bynum down...it's only a matter of time before the phyiscality of the game bites Andrew in the ass.
MARK MY WORDS!
The difference between this game and the Boston game is that the Celtics had plenty of options, while the Clippers don't.
I'll Bynum his due for the 1st half. He did bother Kaman with is length. But not by keeping him from the rim.
The Lakers started 26-13 last season before the breakdown came. That's 39 games into the season.
Here we are 22 games into the season...it's early, man. This guy is going to fade. I have no doubt about that. He has no true strength.

Isn't anyone else tired of the DWADE commercial with the mini-Wades? It's so annoying that they play it every 4th commercial.
Good first half, play better defense and give some starters the night off.

The Lakers are slowly developing. As the season continues, we are getting better and better.
Along with the Lakers growth, there are several other teams having problems early on in the season. That is keeping everybody (except for the Spurs) pretty close in the standings. Even with how well Phoenix got out to that early start for the season, they are only a few losses ahead of the Lakers in the standings. With the rough schedule they have over the next week, things could really look different by Christmas than they do now.
I wish the Lakers could have won the game the other night, but losing may actually turn out to be a good ting for them in the long run. Those types of games can serve as teaching areas for Phil. He has used those with his past teams. Plus, it showed them the importance of being able to perform with Kobe not being in there at crucial times.....
Well, the game is back......
Posted by: JJ | December 16, 2007 at 07:53 PM
Mike T you gotta be smokin crack. The score is 44 to 59 Lakers lead. Cayman isn't even close to a legit center. Next year Bynum will dominate!

Posted by: Xodus | December 16, 2007 at 08:01 PM
It escapes how a true Lakers fan would actually sound as if he wants one of the Lakers to fail as the season continues. You would think that seeing the progress of Bynum would cause everybody to wants it to continue all season. However, instead we have someone that has their own agenda and in turn they have made it their mission to continue to express their beliefs on why eventually it won't last.
What is most interesting to me is how when Bynum has a great game excuses are given to attempt to lessen the accomplishment as if any center could have done the same. YET, Kwame....the designated chosen one of this poster, never has similar types of games when presented with those same advantages.....Crazy...
Well with that second 3-pointer in a row by Walton.....I'm going back to the game......Oh.....and 6 blocks for the guy that is being overmatched!!!! I guess Kwame would have had 10 by now....LOL!
Posted by: JJ | December 16, 2007 at 08:02 PM
"The score is 44 to 59 Lakers lead. "
I didn't say anything about the score. This is the Clippers and not the Celtics. I totally expect the Lakers to win this game.
What makes this game interesting is the Bynum/Kaman match-up. The Clippers/Lakers match is a no brainer.
