Minds may wander
They say an NBA season is a marathon, not a sprint. But tonight's game against the Nuggets (7:30 PST) could very well be both. A sprint, in how Denver plays. A marathon, with the game being brought to your home by TNT, meaning the mandatory TV timeouts and halftime show could turn this baby into a three hours plus event. Which gives fans plenty of time to ponder certain questions. Like how the bench can rediscover its groove in the face of continual shuffling. Or how George Karl might have tweaked Denver's game plan with his son Coby in uni. Our guess. Probably little to no change. But again, we'll never know for sure. Or how lucky the Lakers are to be missing only Kwame Brown, because as the Nuggets have found out, Nene and Stephen Hunter being out and Kenyon Martin being questionable can lead to situations like relying on Jelani McCoy. Or whether Lamar Odom will ever consistently score bushels and bushels of points. Or whether you agree with Kobe Bryant that a lotta petrol remains in his workout-fueled tank. Or the heights of Andrew Bynum's ceiling, which is appearing further and further above one's head each day.
Or if you're a K Brother, you'll just be thinking, "When the hell is George Karl gonna put Von Wafer into the game?"

The Lakers is gone beated the Denver ass

AK/BK,
Regarding the "shuffling" of players; Do you know of any statistic or formula of determining the amount of different combinations that a team/coach uses on the floor? In other words do the Lakers shuffle significantly more than other teams? It sure seems as though we have like 12 teams instead of a first team and second team like other clubs do. Just curious.

This will be Vlad's breakout game. He'll score at least 15.
Rebounds, free throws, turnovers... key to the game
Lamar... double double
Bynum... double double
Kobe... well...
Lakers by 9!!!

I think Smush was more afraid of being under detention by the Riley system, he was under stress to move soonest because he was already LATE. Here comes a lady attuned to repeat offenders who evades paying valet fees got entangled with Smush. Just like his game, Smush is all offense, steal the ball but no defense. Too bad he could not steal the keys, he wrecked the podium and almost broke the arm of the assistant manager. haha that's a Smushcalade experience always accompanied by smudge, still late for practice and now under detention by the prison warden, Pat Riley. lol!
PS. He doesn't really care as long as they honor that $5M contract for 2 years.

"Phil [Jackson] and Kobe are depending on me to get rebounds, patrol the middle and make it difficult for the other team to get layups," Bynum said. "Every team that has won a championship has had a post presence, and I'm trying to fill that void as we speak."
There you go, Kid! Patroling the Middle is the mostest commonest denominator of all the Champions. Once you have that, you can try to build around it. If you don't, you haven't got a shot. (no pun:-)

Maybe if the Lakers coaching staff decided to actually play Ariza and Crittenton, our bench might pack the punch that it did early in the season. Sasha can not defend any two guards in the league; he is too weak and too slow. He is however effective against shorter point guards because his length affects them and his awkward kamikaze defense is effective in changing the rhythm of opposing players. Crittenton, can however play both backcourt positions. He has the length to guard most two guards, especially the reserve two guards, and the speed to stay with most any point guard in the league. I don’t understand why Ariza doesn’t get more run, it is obvious he our best defensive three, and he isn’t going to get any more comfortable on the offensive end until he starts to flow in the triangle. Like Phil Jax said, “this is basketball, not rocket science.” But even rocket science when understanding jet propulsion and simple thermodynamic laws is easy. Basketball on the offensive end is about strong sides and weak sides. Teams utilizing movement of the ball from one of those sides to the other, creates cutting off of post entry and creating two man games on the weak side away from the strong side. The simplicity of the offense is just a simple continuity and balance. If three people are on one side, you balance by going to the weak side. If two people are on both sides of the court, you create one strong side. And to top it off, creating strong and weak sides on the offense end allow for spacing to get shoots, penetration, offensive rebounding opportunities, and defensive transition position. Ariza has been playing basketball for a long time, and I really feel like the fact that he could even play some four for our squad. We have got to play him! He would be terrific against Anthony tonight, and is already automatic that he would do better than all of our threes and fours. Lamar can’t keep up with Carmelo’s foot speed, can’t take the pounding from him on pinch post, and he is unable to slide on his spin move. PLAY ARIZA!!! If Lamar can actually score more, be determined to score 20 points a game, he will be an allstar and the Lakers are a real threat. You know Kobe isn’t going to back down because Lamar is hot. We should haven been getting a combined 50 points a game from this duo since Lamar got back to LA. Although I have seen the strife that Lamar has gone through, and share similar experiences because my mother died when I was at a young age, he has never shown any kind of killer instinct. He is not in the gym at 6 am, and he isn’t the last one to leave. At 28 he has never improved his game from when he came out of Rhode Island, and it is hard for me to fathom he continue to have an inconsistent jumper. For what it is worth, Lamar has made GM and coaches salivate, and we aren’t paying him max money. But for his potential, and being drafter third in the NBA draft, he is simply mediocre, and needs to be told that more. The Lakers can win tonight, they need to control tempo and can keep the NUGS under 100, and go out and get free tacos for those who attend.

Lvl8kers,
82games.com might keep track of every starting unit the Lakers have used. But I doubt they're shuffling things more than any other team that's had a decent run of injuries and an early season trade. When stuff like that happens, a bit of inconsistency along those lines should be expected. It's not like the lineups are getting shuffled simply becase Phil's "feeling whimsical," you know what I mean?
Sixonezero,
I think Ronny's ankle is getting better, but not all the way there, which is why he's not back in the starting lineup. I think (or would like to think, if nothing else) that once Phil thinks Ronny can handle starter's minutes, he'll get moved back into that unit, possibly (or in my mind, hopefully) along with Mihm, who'd become a "defacto starter. Bynum would the lion's share of run, but come off the bench to help bring that unit back to where it was a major asset.

"I just wish more people would celebrate Kobe, I really do,'' Rivers said. "Of all the guys in our league, that bugs me more than anything, that it just seems like we spend so much time trying to tear him apart and I think we're missing how great he is. And I think it's a shame.''
An accomplished player, that works as hard as Kobe, should be celebrated!
There are far too many players in this league that are being WAY OVERHYPED!

Ok, now Mitch said that Coby is out to D-League pretty much indefinitely. That leaves the roster of 13.
Hmmm.. Are they setting up for the Dec 15th? Rumors from FO included their strong interest in Nocioni. That date can also free up other pieces like Walton/Fish for further (past Kobe) moves. I think I am on to something (well, really others here pointed that out).
As I mentioned before, I always felt very clear about Kobe's intentions and state of mind. Until the start of this season. I don't know what's going on in his head, and it's got me all perplexed. He is so friendly to and supportive of his teammates. It's almost as if they were STRANGERS :-)
His peace of mind would be explained by his knowledge of an impending trade.
We Shall see what happens soon enough...

Forgot to mention the state of depression the Bulls have been in.. Not a clear sign or anything, but makes you wonder.. Do the players know of their imminent break up, and just keeping a lid on it? More and More signs point that way..
If it goes down and Lakers get something like Nocioni, Thomas, Gordon + picks they'd be in a great position for further wheeling and dealing. They'd be loaded with B level players and could do a couple of two B's for one A trades.

IMPORTANT REMINDER.. ONLY 52 DAYS LEFT TO VOTE
VOTE NOW AND VOTE DAILY!!
VOTING STARTED ON NOVEMBER 15 AND YOU CAN VOTE EVERY DAY!
MAKE SURE TO VOTE FOR LAMAR, LUKE AND KOBE FOR THE ALLSTAR @ LAKERS.COM AND MAKE SURE TO VOTE DAILY!!
EVERY BLOGGER GO VOTE NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY AT NBA.COM OR LAKERS.COM (DAILY!!)
REMIND EVERYBODY YOU KNOW TO VOTE DAILY EVERYDAY FOR THE NEXT 52 DAYS!
LET THE VOTES STACK TO THE CEILING PEOPLE!!!
**ALSO**
SIDE NOTE FROM "TIM-4-SHOW":
"You should add that no one should vote for anyone EXCEPT a Laker. With the All-Star voting, competing players who get votes too would essentially take away the votes we cast for Lamar. In other words, Lakers only + Eastern conference where the votes don't compete against our guys"
VERY GOOD POINT BY TM-4-SHOW.... NOT NECESSARY TO VOTE FOR ALL 5 POSITIONS, JUST SELECT KOBE, LAMAR, AND LUKE AND CLICK TO FINISH UNLESS YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOTE FOR SHAQ ON THE EAST LIKE I DO, HAVE A GOOD ONE PEOPLE
**ALSO**
SIDE NOTE BY "LONG TIME LAKER FAN":
"you're leaving out a CRUCIAL part of the voting process. There's a box at the bottom of the voting page where you can WRITE IN one vote.
Don't just vote for Kobe, Lamar, and Luke. Write in Bynum or Farmar as well. I don't think they'll win, but it would be good to at least see their names in the list of top 10 vote getters."
OK EVERYBODY YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO

Michale H,
But his contract is not guaranteed until Jan 10. I don't have a clear understanding of these matters, but I think Lakers could null and void it TODAY if they choose to, thus freeing up another roster spot.
Ariza trade and Coby move frees up two spots. They could have done to Coby what they did to Farm last season. Up to three times, I guess. But no, Mitch says it's not just for a couple of games. And it leaves only 13 men roster? I think that means some sort of trade with Lakers getting more bodies than they're sending out is in the works.

Edwin,
The difference is between staying Laker FANS and not being the NBA equivalent of Yankee fans. As long as Jay Jay keeps buying tickets and the Lakers keep bringing some top shelf talent for people to watch, the most expensive show on earth is always there. I've been reading this blog for over a year and have only commented sparsely (mostly just to talk the talk about Vanderbilt with BK), but I make a comment about a .500 team - which is what most of the non Los Angeles market considers the Lakers - and that commands a response? I'm not trying to take it to confrontation, but if people would actually read the post you can tell that I've been a Laker fan for "enough time" (whatever that is to placate we bored-at-work people) and clearly upset with the current team. Naturally I'd like to see a 55 win monster emerge. Truth of the matter is, no one can predict how this season is going to go. We fans thought we were going to win a championship when we picked up Payton and Malone.
Who are "oldtimers?" I get 2 replies from people and now there is is a vendetta against my by old timers who love their team so much they bash it all day long? How can people have problem with saying "ok so the team went 500... at least the season wasn't a total disaster?" Would you be happier if we went 17-65 just to get the first pick because "kobe is going to leave?" I'm simply stating that I'd rather have a competent team than a listless one. If you're going to have an off year you might as well have something to cheer for. Unless, of course, we'd rather point fingers at Kwame, PJ, and the front office and still give them our money. We might as well go with the flow of the season and not press the panic button. The mainstream press has been playing with our emotions since may; we might as well relax and enjoy basketball.

Does anyone know or heard if the Lakers are looking at all to fill the 15th roster spot? We could sure use a big guy inside. The guys I'm thinking of are guys like PJ Brown, Charles Oakley, Dale Davis. I'm also wondering if they will leave the 15th spot open until they can sign guys to 10 day contracts. Any information would be appreciated.

Nope. He still counts on the Lakers roster, which is still at 14. The only way they could
reduce him from the roster count is to waive him.

Lakersville, INTERNATIONAL…
By Michael C. Teniente
Lakersville, INTERNATIONAL: SUSPEND INDEFINETELY!
Lakersville Internation will be suspended until The Big Body Theory returns to action or Dec. 15th when trading proposals should be heating up.
The reason is simple: My analysis of the players is complete. Nothing is going to change.
When I resume with Lakersville International it’ll be because I’ll be reporting about the games with a healthy squad. Pointing out our weaknesses, at this point, is counter-productive.
mike
p.s. You won't have mike t. to kick around for a while. Or maybe that's the other way around. I won't be kicking all of you around for a while. LOL!

Me 'n' Phil
Both Victims of our own Insanity
Tonight I'll watch the game as I do every game, and want the same players coached by the same coach to come out and play like Champions. But they won't.
Phil will wonder after his umpeenth comversation with Lamar about shooting more, not to shoot more.
Me 'n' Phil
Both Victims of our own Insanity
Tonight, I'll want the coach to bench Walton and play J-Crit and Trevor Ariza. But he won't.
Tonight, Phil will insert Luke Walton into the lineup, and then criticize the team for not executing good defense.
Me 'n' Phil
Both Victims of our own Insanity
Tonight, I'll want Phil to restore as many players as he can to the original Bench Mob, so they can regain their power. But he won't.
Tonight, Phil once again will hesitate to call a time out when the other team goes on a run, and wonder why they run up the score.
Me 'n' Phil
Both Victims of our own Insanity
We're both ignoring the dictum that repeating the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
Me 'n' Phil
Both Victims of our own Insanity.

one of the Major issues with the Lakers is consistant INCONSISTANT COACHING. Sorry if i'm not convinced that every team in the Leauge can have a coaching issue except the Lakers.
What's wrong with running some pick and rolls..........
Whats wrong with running some combo screens that Kobe, or farmar or Radmonovich can frequently use to attack the basket, take open shots and draw fouls.
What's wrong with Playing rookies that are talented and show great potential in their first year.....I saw a few flashes of Crittenton to know that he's really talented.......but our coach doesn't play rookies right.
It's a good thing Chris Paul, or Deron Williams or Kevin Durant or Brandon roy didn't get drafted by the lakers.
It's funny to me that Phil hasn't signed an extension yet..........because it's obvious. He's waiting to see if kobe decides to stay on next year

Posted by: sixonezero | November 29, 2007 at 12:34 PM
MOLaker and HAB and anyone else jonesing over the open roster spot,
I don't think the Lakers will use the open roster spot immediately.
The first possible time when I would say there's a chance they would use it is Dec 15.
That's the day that it becomes possible for Nocioni and Mihm to be included in trades
(among other people).
Any time between then and the trade deadline, I think it's possible the Lakers could
get a serious offer for Kobe and could take it. It probably would involve more players
coming to the Lakers than going out, so the 15th spot (and probably Coby Karl's spot)
would be needed to absorb the extra contracts. I only think the Lakers (and Kobe)
would be willing to trade Kobe if their record falls below 500 though.
Another possibility for the 15th spot would be someone like PJ Brown or Chris Webber,
but if the Lakers do that, I think they would add the player down the stretch, for
insurance against Kwame or Lamar going down to injury again and leaving the
team weak in the frontcourt for the playoffs.

Here's an encouraging tidbit (from espn's Daily Dime):
"There have been 19 teams in NBA history with three players who scored 20 or more
points per game (minimum 40 games each player). None of those 19 teams won the NBA
title.
Paul Pierce (21.7), Kevin Garnett (20.8) and Ray Allen (20.3) make up the only NBA trio
currently averaging more than 20 points per game. "

Mamba24,
Thank you for the nice words; I am a blog fan of yours.
To everyone else,
The reason the bench isn’t playing well is because we have excluded bench player from the rotation. At the start of the season we had fresh legs all game because we were playing with a 12 man rotation. When LO came back, the FO thought Cook was expandable, expended him with our back up two (see Mo Evans). With the Kwame injury hurting our front court depth, a trickle down effect is causing all of our bench players to seem out of rhythm. Vlad isn’t hitting the open shot, Farmar isn’t getting out in transition, Luke has completely disappeared from last year contract season, and Turiaf hasn’t been able to get back into his energetic form. The rotation needs to include two more players to take the burden off the shoulders of the bench mob. Quite frankly, they are probably the two most talents players outside of Drew, KB24, and LO (Farmar is on par-talent level). Play Ariza and Crittenton, and do it tonight. You don’t win championships in November, unless it is getting your young players ready to battle in April/May/June.
Crittenton is a rookie, and Phil doesn’t play rookies. Ariza however, is a transaction much like a midseason Isiah Rider roster move in 2001. Phil allowed him to learn the triangle as he went, citing the fact that he was a veteran. Phil sure does love old dudes.
Play both Crittenton and Ariza, and watch the bench mob go crazy.
and Nine Rings for two more years. I can't say their is a better coach in the league, so kudos to the Lakers and Jeanie Buss for doing what they need to do to keep Phil around. I know id stick it out for a playboy bunny.

Mike T.
p.s. You won't have mike t. to kick around for a while...
That's the line of the late Pres. Nixon at the Checkers Speech in the fifties. Will you also resign from being a celebrity or be impeached? Is Kwame going to be dealt on Dec. 15th? I think Ariza would be the last stroke and yet nobody knows what is expected from him? Can you imagine getting another bunch of players but will just sit them down up to the end of the season taking lessons on the triangle? Why tradie if you will just put them in the inactive list? I believe nothing will happen on Dec. 15th just like the two summers where nothing had happened.

Good one Rick Friedman!
Key to tonight's game will be which team will stop playing small/fast paced ball long enough to play D.
Go Lakers!

WE HAD A VERY SUCCESSFUL NOVEMBER!!!
I thought at the beginning of the season that if the Lakers could play .500 ball in the month of November, with the difficult schedule and all the injuries that it would be a success. Well, we're guaranteed to be AT WORST a .500 ball club come the end of the month. I'll take it.
Energy and chemistry, those are the two big keys to this team being successful and maximizing the roster they have.

Rick F.,
That's a nice observation: Me'N Phil. As they say in Spanish: "Por eso Phil es tambien insano y' loco." Did I say it right? lol!

Edwin Gueco,
This is just a historical clarification. Richard Nixon actually made the 'You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around' speech after he lost the 1962 gubernatorial election to Moonbeam Sr. It only took 6 years for him to return from exile.
The Checkers speech rules, though; Nixon was an early master of the power of television to manipulate.

Andrew Z,
"Energy and chemistry, those are the two big keys to this team being successful and maximizing the roster they have."
What about point differential?
