Texas Two-Step, step one
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Once again, Lakers Blog is on the road. AK will be courtside- or wherever they put writers in San Antonio and Houston- tonight and tomorrow, which of course means a live blog from both games. So make sure to stop by at game time.
The Lakers head into San Antonio tonight (5:30, KCAL) having given off mixed signals in their first five games. The purple and gold have looked great (see Utah, Phoenix), they've looked less great (see Houston, New Orleans). No doubt they'll have to be the former if they'd like to return to L.A. with a win or two. The Lakers will know what to expect in San Antonio. It's just a question of getting it done against some tough D. The rivalry has plenty of history, but while the Lakers have actually played hard and reasonably well against the Spurs over the last couple of years, San Antonio has continued to dominate the league while LAL has been treading water. Of course, with .4 back in the house, things could change for the purple and gold. Add in a healthy Lamar Odom, whom the Lakers would like to free up as much as possible in the offense and a lull in the Kobe Bryant Saga, and many fans probably feel more optimistic about this game than they might have over the summer.
Things aren't quite as mellow in Chicago, where the Bulls are struggling and need to grow up fast, Kobe rumors or not. And if they don't win, the discussion in BullsVille continues. By the way, that the issue has died down (a little) locally doesn't mean others aren't still investigating the pros and cons of a Kobe deal.

BRING ON THE SPURS!

They'll have to put Manu or FInley on LO. That's a mismatch made in heaven. Lamar should get 30.
SA will be ready because of last year. This will give us a look at where the team really is. Hope it's a positive one.

I think Chicago's just using the Kobe trade excuse to account for their horrible playing.
Mamba, sign me up for the Kobe MVP bandwagon. An MVP win would certainly trump the Lakers bid to get rid of him. What franchise would want to be know for trading the leagues MVP????

3 keys to Texas sweep.
Kobe -- playing the all around game which we know he can do.
Rebounding-- Lakers should never lose the rebound battle w/ Bynum , Turiaf, Odom
2nd unit--this squad needs to show it's value on these b2b games.
This is more exciting than opening night, this will let us know where were at and the type of team we have. You could say the DVR is going to get a work out these next couple of days.
Go Lakers and make a statement this week!!!

This game will probably go the way of San Antonio three-pointers. If SA pulls a Peja on the Lakers then the Lakers get blown out. If SA misses a few three-pointers then the Lakers could win in a hotly contested, grind-it-out game...Incidentally, I don't think Peja has shot that good against any of the other teams he has played against since the Lakers...

AK, BK and everyone else,
What do you guys think of PJ taking the reins off of LO? Personally, I love the idea. I noticed the shift during the Minnesota game but didn't really think much of it. Now that I do I think it could be the key to LO being the type of player we all thought he could be. We've all known that despite his skill set, LO is not Scottie Pippen (shocker, I know). We've spent three seasons trying to fit the square peg in to a round hole, with fairly disappointing results.
For all his talent and basketball IQ, I've always felt that LO is more of an instinctual player, rather than a cerebral player. And for two years we've been asking him to be a cerebral player. LO's always been at his best when he's been able to use his full complement of talents (remember last season's opener against PHX) and I think we're finally allowing him to do that. I think this could potentially be the best move PJ's made in his second stint in LA.

On a game day, we are the freakin' Laker fans - the so called 97% Posters, at least we have a positive view of our team. To pundits like Mike Monroe, Eric Pincus and John Frolic, they attract readers by writing about the Magnificent. On the big game day, all they can do is publish an INTRIGUE, a never ending drama also promoted by the spies of Jimbo on this blog. Again I quote you.............. Forget about the Bulls as they have no deal for the lakers as their top three players do not make a Kobe. Get rid of Kobe for some real young imprressive talent and or picks.
Posted by: rickbb | November 13, 2007 at 11:26 AM
xodus - It may just be me but I don't see a difference in what's happening on the floor with LO. To be fair, I didn't see a difference between all the different little Kobe role changes either. If it works then I'm all for a more aggressive LO that's posting up opposing SFs and grabbing lots of boards.

RE: Literary Take on Kobe
That analogy was completely absurd. If Kobe was the Great Gatsby, than Gatsby would've hooked up with Daisy on at least three occasions, and in consecutive years, no less. Gatsby also had every imaginable asset to help him hook up with Daisy. Kobe had Smush and a cracked out Jimbo as his wing men. Nuff said.
THE REAL LITERARY TAKE ON KOBE:
The Kobe saga is less "The Great Gatsby" and more "Of Mice and Men".
Kobe is George trying to make it on the farm with his handicapped buddy Lennie (Jimbo).
However, Lennie's cluelessness and infatuation with "soft" objects such as mice (Cook, Smush, Shammond, Vlade Divac, Tierre, Luke, Samaki Walker, Kwame, etal.) make it impossible for Lennie to succeed out in the farm.
In the end, Lennie is undone by his infatuation with these soft objects, and George is left with no choice but to kill his clueless buddy.
Kobe tried giving Jimbo the axe all summer when he demanded Jerry West back with "Full Authority", and when he demanded the insider be fired. Unfortunately, in the real world, Lennie is not so easy to kill.

Xodus,
Couldn't agree more. Look at LO when he has been at his best and that's when he was in Miami and with the Clippers. He was more of a "Magic" than "Pippen" and it just plays to his strengths. I think if you have a certain player with a unique skills set (like grabbing a rebound and getting down the court in six and a half steps) you are a fool not to use it. Of course you can't have him playing completely outside the system at all times, but giving him the right amount of freedom could be a huge gain for us.
I think we've both been saying it for awhile now, but this roster is going to require everyone, including Kobe, to find not only where and how they are most effective, but excelling in that position as well if they are to contend.
Should be interesting tonight.

KEIFOOOOOO! BACK TO BACK TO BACK that's what I say. Always remember
this may be 9Rings last year and he aint going out as punk. Phil always has
a theme for every season so I'll give my theme for this season OUT OF CHAOS COMES GREATNESS

As the Bulls continue to struggle, I see another deal that can make the Lakers instant contenders... Everyone on hear has been saying that we are thin at the 4 postiion.. But I really think it's our 5... Turiaf has been doing a great job at the 4 thus far, and I think he will continue on getting better. With LO returing I see him taking on that roll as well when Luke or Vrad come off the bench.... I really think we need a max 9 player rotation.. I say we trade Kwame, Cook, Sasha or Mo as well as our 19th for Ben Wallace.. His been struggling up there in Chicago, and with Lueol as well as Ben Gordon due to be signed next year the Bulls are going to need to cap money, as they are both looking for 8-10 Million a year.... Here is my line-up, let me know what you think... Also I think Bynum will get a lot more experience behind Ben than he will behin Kwame( just a bad, bad roll model).... Even though Bynum has been playing good thus far, I still think hes a good 2 years away... If the Lakers really want to keep their core ( Kobe, LO, Bynum, Farmar, Fisher and Luke) and compit at the same time than they really have to look at this deal carefully... What you guys think
IMAGINE our defense with a line-up of
Fish/Farmar
Kobe/Mo or Sasha
Lamar/Luke
Turiaf/Vrad
Wallace. Bynum
I think this team can contend....

Future ideas inspired by the "Kobe as the Great Gatsby" column:
Mobe Dick - Captain Kobe searches for the trophy that once bit him. Who can forget the opening line "Call me Kobe."?
The Scarlet Letter - Kobe must wears a mark on his chest that reminds everyone of his sin.
Lolita - Colorado. Ouch.
The Wizard of Zen - Kobe gets caught up in a tornado and finds himself on a journey with a lion without a heart (it's Kwame - no Turiaf joke here) a scarecrow (Odom), and a Tin Man (Mihm). Toto would be Fish. Farmar would be a Munchkin.
The Fountainhead - Kobe as Howard Roark, the architect who did things his way or not at all.
... I would think of more, but I gotta go to lunch!
Posted by: Kobe's T | November 13, 2007 at 12:01 PM
That Kobe analogy made me wonder.
Would winning a championship with another team, mean less to Kobe on a personal level?
Certainly the plight of the past and current roster would be less of an excuse for mere mortal men but we are taking about Kobe aren't we. His desire for winning, dedication to understanding the mental and physical aspects of basketball puts him above most of the NBA players. Is this excuse enough of a reason to leave the Lakers?
I would find it hard to believe that he could have the same personal satisfaction if he were able to somehow bring a championship to the Chicago, and not with his current Laker team. I'm hoping that he realizes that for his best answer to proving the "Great Gatsby" analogy wrong in its face, would be to stay a Laker and prove everyone has been mentaly challenged by bringing us another NBA Championship* banner.

Especially a talent like LO, who hasn't been able to put it all together as a Laker. If the T-Wolves game provides a template for how he'll be playing the rest of the season than I like it. The biggest issue with the Kobe-Odom partnership is that both require the ball in their hands to be effective. On Friday, he appeared to be aggressive w/o having the ball in his hands a ton.
I think this suits both his skill set and his attitude. LO gets to play the team game in an up tempo style he was born to play in. And we get (hopefully) get the 18 and 10 guy we've wanted him to be for 3 years. Everyone wins.
BTW, is it just me or are Baby Bynum and the Mamba beginning to build a little chemistry? Kobe's made solid entry passes into him and always seems to be looking for him on lobs. Kobe was always made the best entry passes into Shaq in the early part of this decade and he seems to be using those skills with Bynum.

How about an analogy of "Felix the Cat" and the Lakers!

Aholic,
No, I would never insult you unintentionally. And whenever I attempt to use sarcasm, it's never a hint. I just dump the full load, with reckless disregard of front to backs or back to fronts.
Regarding Krolik, I don't think he intended to insinuate that his opinion was derived from that one game. If it does come across as such, then he has some polishing to do. The kid's just a freshman. He has real classes to worry about. He can only come in as a sub for a few minutes here and there.
Ok, I am off the rest of the afternoon. C U gametime. Talk amongst yourselves:-)
Lakers will be 5 and 2 tomorrow night.

I wondered that also, but I set my dvr to record the game and it showed it starting at 5:30.

Lakeraholic-
Buy the Gatsby comparison or not, it's pretty clear he has seen Kobe play more than one time.

The KCAL schedule actually says 6:30. In 20 years Ive never seen a San Antonion game start at 5:30!! Usually 5:30 are for games on the East coast which start at 4:30. KCAL wants to give the locals time to get home so they usually delay it an hour. Anyways, I hope it's 6:30 so I can get home in time!!!
