The Sundays ring in

October 14, 2007 |  9:57 am

No, not these Sundays, (Though I used to have a thing for lead singer Harriet Wheeler. Pretty, killer voice, British accent.  What's not to like?), but the typing kind. Given all that went on this week with Jerry Buss on the Kobe situation, it's not surprising to see some Sunday hoops columnists weigh in on the situation.

In an unrelated but interesting note, Jackson questions Kevin Garnett's perception of the franchise, at least in terms of why KG was leery of coming to L.A.

How bout Kobe for Dwight Howard?????

Michael Teneiente way of explains things is just sui generis and wrong.

Jerry Buss talked because Garnet destroyed Lakers brass reputation, calling them in the same value that Minnesota.

The Lakers are now low in estimation. They will initiate a period where non good players will come here to sign.

They have to rebuild now. They will face a period of 7 or 8 years of drafts picks and if Jim and Mitch act better than they did the last 3 years, in 8 years they can be contenders and erase the image of the franchise..

So, Teniente. Buss react in desperation, knowing they already lost the game of public opinion. He is trying to justify the trade of Kobe to fans, and he is hoping that Kobe can turn around some type of interest in this franchise, but I doubt...Jerry stated clearly that he is happy with the way his team is growing...so we know now that they won't improve this team because they believe this team can do better. Well, Jerry is now in a process of negation and sad delusion. His own words sounded like a loser pleading his case.

One important question:

Why Kobe, knowing that PJACKSON and Jerry West are almost enemies, ask for the return of WEST?

Isn't that a move against his own coach ?

I'm just curious to hear speculations.

Jon Kav

I'm with you. There's nothing going on here that a nice 18 game win streak wouldn't cure.

I just take issue, given how fragile things were this summer, with Jerry dropping that bomb on the national sporting news. No comment on that issue would have been a more positve way to get this 07-08 party started.

Ill advised quotes stirred up enough trouble this summer. If we don't learn from the past are condemned to relive it.

I agree...GO LAKERS

So far Sonny Belfast is watching his team with disbelief...

The star is a young guy who only merit is to had provided 18 or 20 points just last season.

The team lost any dynamic...even the ultra Sacto fans looked bored watching the game.

RIP Sacramento queens...

Mike T.

I'm good with your take on Jerry in all of this, but why in public? Didn't all this start with Kobe over stepping that boundary? Wasn't that the main complaint? Couldn't he assert his position away from the microphones?

Jerry does what he says and in this case that means taking Kobe trade calls. I think the reason he said it when he did is because you can't keep those kinds of trade calls quiet. He may not get a deal done, but he's officially shopping. That has to have some effect on the season. If it's a winning effect, never mind haha.

tagent here:

how come people are on Gilbert Arenas' jock? he makes plays and is a good player, but....

career fg% .428
career 3p% .361

Especially when they say Kobe sucks with a fg% .453 and 3p% .337???

" After further review: This is my conclusion on the Jerry Buss interview.Posted by: Michael Teniente"

Mike, EXCELLENT POST!!! Word for word, I agree 110% the ONLY WAY this current situation can heal, learn, grow and move forward now is for Kobe to actually MAN UP, swallow his pride and ego and at least offer an apology to the Team and Owner for going off. I truly feel and believe Papa Buss loves Kobe and like the old saying goes, "you only hurt, the one you love" Kobe crushed Papa Buss last summer, right or wrong, Papa Buss PAYS for the lifestyle Kobe, his family and close friends enjoy. If getting before the nation, crying and offering an apology for making a stupid decision with a groupie, who at the time, couldnt afford a new Hyundai, let alone, sign a 20mil paycheck, meant something to #24, then the current firestorm he played a part in should be a "No Brainer" Be Humble, Apologize, move on.. Thanks for articulating my point of view as well Mike.

Tiki props!

People forget that this is all about winning. It's not like Kobe's asking for more money (though I don't dispute that he will get paid more if he does get traded, though I have yet to hear that Pluto pays that well), he's asking for horses to win. In fact this all started with him asking for the return of Jerry West's leadership. Who among here would say no to Jerry Buss coming back? Yes, his recent moves haven't exactly led to a championship, but as with Jerry West, it's really more about backbone, and knowledge and moxie. The man had enough guts to clear cap space and lay it all on the line to sign Shaq. Today, our present front office has enough guts to wait on Socks, Kwame, LO to be an all-star and waste Kobe's prime...I'll give em that actually, that's pretty gutty.

Please don't get me wrong, I am actually looking forward to LO's season, Socks too. I love me some LO, but the very idea of trading Kobe? That's preposterous! That's panic button pushing, titanic sinking (good one Tiki, gilligan lol), Milwaukee Bucks/Atl Hawks like insanity (Milwaukee coz we should ask them how trading the Cap turned out).

What has happened to this organization. How can we reconcile losing 2 HOF in a span of 3 years/4 years.

Correction...it all started with Jim Buss's radio interview.

That was something.

Edwin G.

The "Retain/Trade" bloggers poll obviously raised some valid points, both Pro and Con but how about creating a poll and voting on who amongst us feels Kobe should go public with an apology to Buss and the Lakers? I share Mike T's sentiment that with this ONE ACT, Kobe can quiet not only his supporters and Laker fans, but the B-Ball Nation as a whole in one fell swoop!! I'm sure theres a contingent of bloggers that may feel, Kobe doesnt need to apologize for an inept FO and being "honest" but theres a grey area in play here and I'm curious to see if it matters to Laker Nation? To simplify it and cut to the chase..the question point blank is.. Do You Feel Kobe Should Publicly Apologize to Dr Buss ? If he does, that to me shows he really wants to be a Laker for life, if he wont, he really wants to be a Bull.. or anything other than a Laker which makes him the enemy to me.

If the Lakers want to win the CHIP this year b/4 Kobe leaves for good, this is the starting Five to do it in the playoffs.

Farmar-pg
Critt-sg
Kobe-sf

Bynum-C

I think this is a big setup by Phil, Kobe and Buss. This team is better then we think. I think they surprise everyone this year. Is there a deeper team then the Lakers 1 - 15 ??

But if KOBE is traded b/4 the deadline to Chicago, the 1 player that has to come back in the trade is DENG.. IF not, add it to the list of another bad trade by the Lakers... Buss... you can not blow this trade!!

After all this drama over Kobe, I am at the point of get rid of Kobe, get some great young talent and then lose every game for the chance at MAYO or LOVE...Either one of those guys would make me think of Magic and Showtime again... This team needs a leader and it doesnt look like we can depend on Kobe to provide that... What a shame the best player in the World and he doesnt want to be a LAKER.. Mindboggling!!!!

Looks like Rebuilding for another 3 or 4 years.... That sucks!!

bd

mike T,

After further review: This is my conclusion on the Jerry Buss interview.

Nice conclusion, mike T.. Well thoughts....You are indeed the Einstein of the Blog..

Weave-Man-

I agree with you. I don't think the Bulls would do that sort of deal, one that includes Deng and Hinrich and a pick, etc. If they would offer it, that's the sort of Kobe trade I'd do in a heartbeat. But more likely they'll get the Gordon/Thomas/etc. deal, which isn't one they need to jump at. Not right now, at least.

As Jerry Buss pointed out (after, of course, I did earlier this summer- he's such a copycat), the types of teams Kobe would want to go to aren't those that necessarily need to make the bold move of acquiring him to win a title. Does Chicago need a boost? Yeah. They have serious frontcourt scoring problems and lack consistency in general on that end. But they're close. If they can add Kobe on the cheap? Great. Go get him. But if the Lakers insist on a high quality package, they could very well decide to pass. It's a bolder move than they need. Same with Dallas, same with Phoenix. There are easier ways to get good than a Kobe Bryant trade, assuming the Lakers don't settle.

Honestly, if Kobe really does want out down the road, the easiest way he'll have to gain leverage would be to very pubicly announce that he'd sign for well below market value in an effort to join a winner. THAT would put pressure on the Lakers to make a deal, because then the threat that he could walk would have a lot more teeth.

BK

quality posts today.

michael teniente and rick friedman, you had me at hello.

awesome takes.

BK,

I don't see letting Kobe walk after 08-09 season as the end of the world. Instead of getting players back for him, Lakers would get over 20 mil of cap space to play with. There is a slew of players, currently regarded as best and brightest, with contracts expiring in 09 and 10. And LAKERS were always able to attract top FA's both before Buss and since.

Hearing the ticking of Kobe's opt-out clause, forces their hand quite a bit, but having cap space means flexibility. I don't see why they wouldn't end up with a few top FA's competing for those dollars and a chance to play in the glam capital of B-Ball World. Have their choice of picking a superstar or two-three top notch players..

Am I missing something with that line of thinking?

Complex Brotha,

I think what you suggested was a fair question but it doesn't give a fair perspective for those who believe that the F/O and the Owners are also parts of the problem. With regards to polling, I suggested it to the blog not really to prove a point that there is a greater number of this group than the other but my objective was to cure the ills of our blog wherein the contents does not refer to the Laker basketball but more on name calling, cursing, name manufacturing, if any and whatever maladies that drove many traditional bloggers away from this site.

With regards to my personal viewpoint on the matter as a longtimed fan that goes back to West, Baylor & Wilt era, I ashame to be a laker fan today. This is no longer basketball, we're dealing with politics, human behavior problems pitting one egos with another ego in a high drama and Hollywood as its background. Even in business, I've shunned away from politics tho' you can't avoid it as long as human beings interact with one another, there will always be politics. Seriously, I prefer basketball because I want to be entertained with the sport that I love. Well, in a Laker basketball game the parameters are clear, if at the end of the season they are eliminated in the playoffs - they suck. I don't care whether it's Mitch, PJ, Kobe and 14 scrubs, they all suck. Laker tradition is winning, (like the Yankees in baseball or Cowboys in NFL) that's why fans pay a lot to see this team. Now to extend the season into a melodramatic - he said this so I go to radio hopping, We will surround you with good players, I go to Barcelona, I follow you in Barcelona, He is an idiot, I'm now a good soldier, There will be a lot of changes starting the Draft Day/Free Agency, I go for this 19year year old phenom and finally, We are shopping for our Superstar but no team can give us a good exchange....etc etc. now we go to the Part II Act II - that this guy needs to apologized because he was called an idiot, he should apologize to this guy who is incompetent and while a new pretender goes to radio and will admonish the coach, the coach side with his superstar but question the other superstar for saying bad to F/O or the other way around, that they should apologized to this star player for not giving him enough support as promised......etc., etc. See, I don't see anything connected with basketball. These are all political bickerings from the top owner down to the last player. Can somebody please tell all this people to stop and shut up once and for all and just focus on their game or on their job? If fans can only be united and shut them all OFF, that would be a great season. We did this to the Raiders and to the Rams and no one miss them in LA for the last 14 years (except for Mr. Mike T. wishing the Rams will come back.) As Jerry Buss said this is all about business, well the fans will take the business away from him as a sign dissatisfaction: by not attending games, by cancelling cable/Directv subscription, by not buying any kind of Laker jerseys or by campaigning to cancel all Laker commercials, by putting a legal class action suit "Fans against the Laker Owners"....well, that would never happen, I'm just too idealistic in imagining things as if it can done that way. Supposing it happens when Kobe and PJ are gone, then finally the fans power will be heard by the owners, coach and players.

wesjoenixon,

>>>Not only will he not get the Bulls best player (deng) in the deal, I doubt
>>>he'll get their second best player (Gordon) either.

Actually, the rumors are (according to the Smith article) that the offer the
Bulls made was Ben Gordon, Tyrus Thomas, and Ben Wallace, and that
was what Buss was referring to as not NEARLY equal value for Kobe.

I think Sam Smith's article rang true. Both the Lakers and the Bulls want to
see what happens this year. If the Lakers can move on to the second
round and a couple of the young players show enough promise, maybe
Kobe will stay. If the Bulls can make it to the Eastern Conference finals
with the existing team, them maybe they won't want Kobe.

But if the Lakers lose in the first round and the Bulls get smacked down
by Boston or Cleveland or Miami or some other team with a superstar,
they'll both be looking to change things up. At that point, they might offer
what Smith suggested - which is Deng, Hinrich, either Tyrus Thomas or
Joachim Noah, and a first round pick. That's probably closer to a package
Buss would accept, especially if Deng and/or Hinrich makes the all-star
team.

Watch the Bulls signings. They have until the 31st to re-sign Deng and
Gordon. If they sign both of them, it will make it difficult to trade either
both during the year (poison pill provision) and next year (base year
compensation). But if either of them remains unsigned, it sets up a perfect
situation for a sign-and-trade to the Lakers. It would just make it a lot
easier to make the trade work.

Weave-Man,

Actually, I think the Deng, Hinrich, Thomas or Noah, and a draft pick works
for Chicago.

Nocioni can step in and be the starting SF, which is a drop off from Deng,
but still a legit starter. They do lose their starting PG in Hinrich, but they've
always had trouble playing Hinrich with Gordon because they're both short
so there's nobody to guard the SG. With Kobe & Gordon, Kobe can guard
the opposing SG and they can share the PG duties on offense.

Starting lineup of Gordon-Kobe-Nocioni-Smith-Wallace should do
fine. And they'd still have a little bit of depth with Sefolosha, Noah or
Thomas, Khryapa, and Duhon if they re-sign him.

But I don't think they'll do a trade like that until after next years playoffs
when it gets made abundantly clear to them that they can't get past Miami,
Cleveland, Boston, or Detroit without a superstar.

Can we just play some basketball already?!?

I'd like to see how much better this Lakers team can be now that...

Lamar Odom is coming into his prime;

Andrew Bynum, Jordan Farmar, and Ronny Turiaf have another year of experience behind them;

Luke Walton and Vlad Rad are healthy again;

Kobe is in the best shape of his life;

Derek Fisher has replaced Smush Parker as starting point guard;

and we have a talented rookie like Javaris Crittenton, who can create for himself.

We went 42-40 last year with 3/5 of the starting line-up injured and Smush as starting point guard. Can't the Lakers improve on that with the team they have?

GET REAL!

We won championships with Wilt and West and Goodrich

We won championships with Kareem and Magic and Big Game James

We won championships with Shaq and Kobe and Big Shot Bob

Is there ANy possibility we win with Lamar and Deng and Hinrich????

GET REAL!

We need Kobe AND Jermaine And The Matrix (if not Lamar).

Period.

We are the Lakers and being a solid #4 team in our division is NOT our goal! We lose the best player in the game we lose our shot at being a championshiop contender. Dengs and Howards and players of that ilk might move us up a couple of slots in the West. But championships?

GET REAL!

HAB-

While it's hard to predict where the Lakers will be exactly in relation to the cap after next season, I totally agree that letting Kobe go and taking the cap space is not necessarily a disaster. Especially when compared to taking a trade that could put them behind the eight ball down the road. Given the choice between a bad trade and no trade at all, I'd take no trade. But I'd rather try to select players from a team that I want rather than hope to reconstruct through free agency. Often times, teams have to drastically overpay on the market to get a real star.

BK

second that jay jay. having gordon and deng along with lamar is getting us nowhere. only once can i remember a championship team without a megastar. An that is just cause the pistons ran into a team that imploded.

If I am the Chicago Bulls I will be making a serious offer alreday to Kobe as soon as possible before Buss or Kobe chnage their mind. This is a one in a million opportunity and they have to make a quick and solid move to get Kobe right away.

Bulls shoould be willing to give up Deng and Heinrich. A backcourt of Gordon/Bryant and a front line of Nocioni/Noah/Wallace IS VERY MUCH A TEAM BUILT FOR THE PLAYOFFS. Bulls can afford to loose Deng and Heinrich.

Bottomline is Chicago, NBA, and the World will go crazy with Bryant in Bulls uniform. The bonus is every NBA coach will take Bryant as the go to guy in any playoff game.

Chicago wins whatever they give to the Lakers. All they have to do is to satisfy Jerry Buss, and he has said there is no talent equal to Kobe.

It's your move Chicago! Strike while the iron is istill HOT!

Ben Gordon and Kobe Bryant are scoring machines!

Ben Wallace, Joahkim Noah and Kobe Bryant are tremendous energy in the defensive end.

Tyrus Thomas, Joe Smith, Nocioni, Safalosha, Duhon... C'mon Bulls! You are getting the best player in the game right now!

Deng and Heinrich will never tocuh close to the superstar status of a KOBE BRYANT!!!

As a Laker fan and Kobe fan, I would love to see Kobe in Bulls uniform! BULLS WILL BE BACK IN THE MAP AGAIN OVERNIGHT FOR SURE!

Take this opportunity while Jerry Buss is seriously listening to offers, if the Lakers by any luck starts winning and KOBE apologizes to Jerry Buss, your window of opportunity could close as fast as it opens!

When a great opportunity passes you by like KOBE BRYANT, you better not waste a moment!

Another bottomline, Chicago can not win a WCF and NBA Finals with Deng and Heinrich! A GORDON-KOBE-NOAH-WALLACE can and will!!!

The Bulls can not offer NOAH to the Lakers. Bulls are loaded with perimeter players and the addition of Kobe alreday makes them strong in those positions. Bulls need more BIGS like Noah that can play and are proven in BIG GAMES playing BIG MAN position.

KOBE will love Noah's passion and energy for sure! Have y'all seen him in pre season, he has gotten bigger and plays with same energy as Anderson Varegao with stronger defense.

I just heard through my reliable source that Kobe Bryant wil be traded to the Chicago Bulls my the end of next week! This is huge as we all know and will dramatically change the scope on the NBA. So hears how it will go down. Bulls get Kobe and in exchange the Lakers are getting Ben Gordon, L. Deng, Tyrus Thomas, and a draft pick. That leaves the Lakers with a starting lineup of Derek Fisher, Ben Gordon, Deng, Lamar, Kwame/Bynum/Mihm. Not bad huh. More Importantly it makes the Bulls a legitamate championship contender with a starting lineup of Kurt H, Kobe, Andres Nocioni, Ben Wallace and Noah/Joe Smith. Not much of a bench however with the key researves being Thabo Sefolosha, Chris Duhon, and either Smith or Noah and a bunch of scrubs. However very possible they win championship even with thier meager bench. The Lakers on the other hand will struggle a bit with all the new faces but should make the playoff's and may advance to secound round.
You hear it hear first. C-Dubbs

C-Dubb has yet another reliable source. Where have we heard that before.

MH

C-Dubbs,

Your source must have some fact and figures mixed up. Kobe Bryant is making:

$19,490,625 this season.

Ben Gordon, Ty Thomas and Lang make:

$4,881,669
$3,505,320
$3,320,338

That's a total of $11,707,327

How does that work? That's almost 8 million dollars short, isn't it?

mike

C-dubbs....Come on man...they already said that deng wont be a part of any deal...if this goes through i will take it all back...and give you credit

"You hear it hear first. C-Dubbs"

with a line like that, i hear you too.....good luck with that.

Lets see the best deal would be,

KOBE... WALLACE...GORDON....SMITH....NOCIONI
and a thin bench to battle it out in the east

LAKERS...KIRK, NOAH, TYRUS, DENG, THABO
and a huge need to cut players. This brings power forward help so BYNUM can have a physical presence to help in the post. It is important to fill the power forward spot with a big strong rebounder type (since it looks like BROWN and MIHM won't be able to fill that roll) because this frees the center from being pushed around. Lakers would have four point guards, DENG needs to play shooting guard and Lakers have options at power forward again. Lakers play with a big line up.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=2429~1981~3224~3028~3032~110&teams=13~13~13~13~13~4&te=&cash=

If BULLS want to keep DENG then the problem is they will need to keep a point guard or get one back since Gordon and Kirk would leave.

If no DENG and no KIRK then the LAKERS need a lot of draft picks and will end up taking on a larger contract. The lakers should try to stay away from WALLACE since he is getting older.

Also the center piece of any trade should NOT be a SMALL FORWARD since they already have so many of them. In a way they don't need point guards either but since the BULLS better players are perimeter players thats the way it goes.
The LAKERS should go for a deal the brings them stronger athletes and big power forwards. This lets ODOM move to small forward and hopefully keep him healthy.
Odom needs to stay away from injuries and shooting from the 3 point line.

on another note

Bynum said he will have a big year. It will depend on the play of the power forward. Can the power forward play physical tough interior game.
Say what you want about Artest but the Pacers JO needed him has a force field to free up the interior for rebounding and scoring.
Teams need damage magnets. Tough high energy physical players that distract other teams, deal out hits, absorb them and provide space to operate in the perimeter and post. The idea of an enforcer, ex. rich fox, he got into the heads of the major western conference opponents, Blazers, Kings. And during these times you didn't have Kobe having to go hit Memphis players.

With a strong power forward Bynum will have more space to operate and not be pushed out away from the key.

C-Dubbs:
If the Lakers make that trade I guarantee you that PJ will not start Fisher and Gordon. He doesn't like small point guards much less small SG's.
I would not be in favor of a trade like that. The Lakers want a player who will bring in the fans. I don't see Deng, Gordon or Thomas being ones that will fill the seats.

Boy, go camping for a week and the Lakers fall apart!!

I don't think Buss' comments mean anything has changed; they are all basically a common sense analysis of the situation. But I agree that making them publicly doesn't help matters, in any of the possible cases: trying to trade Kobe, trying to trade others to build around Kobe, or waiting to see if this group of players will develop into a contender.

Tiki,
It wasn't always GIlligan's fault!! What about the time that the surfer got washed to the island by the storm; and when he surfed back, he hit his head and couldn't remember anything about the castaways!! Gilligan had nothing to do with that!

Laker Seth,
"Can't the Lakers improve on that with the team they have?"

It's not so much a question of whether the Lakers can improve on 42 wins, it is a question of what the ceiling is with this particular group of players.

Dear Mamba24,

I will be on a jury duty on Monday, so I'm submitting you the result of the polling last Friday posts up to Saturday ended at 9AM or 12noon your time in the east coast.

11th Edition UPDATE of the Blog Election - To Trade or To Retain KOBE

Upon further review of the posts made on Friday, I have added more names under Trade and Retain. If there are misinterpretations on your post, please sound off on Monday. I have also considered the protest of VMan being lumped with the trade group and clarified it in his postion that he should be retain group. Voting continued after the deadline, so I put them under the category of "Addendum" I likewise submit the names who made their positions clear whether to trade or retain Kobe. However, your oldie clerk is human and non-technie so it's possible I miss one and misinterpreted another one. Mamba, do you want to continue this polling in your roll call or just stop from here?

Analysis:

Anyway you look at it, it is running almost 60/40 on two ideas. This is the Blog Pulse or so called consensus of the given group. It won't win or lose ball games but when you refer to Lakers Blog, we can safely say majority of the bloggers here like Kobe to stay, running 3:2 ratio. However, the voice of the minority 2 out 5 should also be considered that they are getting fed up of all this high drama. There has to be end of it.

There are die hards on both sides, on the retain group they see Kobe as the only saviour, if the Lakers will ever be competitive this season while the other group put the blame solely on the selfishness of Kobe why the Lakers are in this situation. The moderates would like to go on with the game. The trade group moderates would like to trade Kobe to end the drama and move on with the new players; the retain moderates would like to see the new players, new strategies of PJ get it started and interested on the improvement made by some players as exhibited in the preseason games but not working as a team due to the new offense and other experiments in the pipeline launched by PJ. Not to be forgotten are the 3rd group who have no opinions whether to trade or retain Kobe, they have other issues and concerns like the coach, the GM, the injuries, the preseason atmosphere so they have no say on any bandwagon whether to praise Kobe or burn him on the stake.

As I said earlier last Saturday, this is not done scientifically to establish margin of errors or clearly define the sampling methodology, however if there were 80 members expressed their choices from their posts out of th estimated 400 to 500 bloggers in two days time, well I believe the results are credible enough to form a basis for conclusion. Many have mentioned in their post their clear vote while others I just interpreted based on what they are saying on their posts. Once they say that they are dissatisfied with Kobe and want him to be out of here, then that means trade and anybody who defends Kobe to the hilt and have faith with the Lakers with Kobe in it, then that is retain. Unfortunately, if you notice this is all about Kobe as if the Lakers is composed of one player i.e. Kobe. Very sad. Well, I'm just giving you the prevailing sentiments of the times. Never in the history of the Lakers that there is fascination on one player by the Owner, the media, the F/O, the Coach, the other teammates, the Olympic team, it's all about Kobe. So the poll was born because of Kobe. However, the poll was designed not because of Kobe but to save the blog from criticisms from many bloggers who refused to post because it is no longer wholesome and entertaining for discussions and debates with fellow Laker fans.

Now that many have spoken, let's bury those hatchets, avoid those stupid remarks, let's all create more LOVE NOT WAR in the blog, by discussing how the Lakers can win it all this year.

jay jay

"Dude ANY player, let alone the best in the game, who was resigned then lied to and manipulated like the Busses did to Kobe would want out! The way to fix it is to CHANGE the way they've been operating - not blame him and dump him!"

first kobe isn't "the best in the game" and second management didn't "lie" to kobe.

Those would be Kobe Talking Points #1 and #83.

Please admit that you're a kobe apologist...please, be upfront about it.

jay jay

"Yeah I'm a Kobe loyalist. Because he's the best player in the game AND the ONLY chance we have of restoring our former glory and winning a championship sometime in this decade."

thank you. i give you much respect for owning up to being a kobe loyalist like a man. at least i respect you more than your guy.

unlike you, i'm a laker loyalist, not a so-and-so loyalist.

If you are a Laker fan, I'd be leery of Gordon coming over in a trade. He's too small to defend SGs, which means you'll have to pair him with a TALL PG. Plus the fact that he (and Deng) is due for a new contracts (and is looking at least 10M per season) could end up in a situation where we have him for less than a season.

As a Laker fan, I'd ask for:
Sefolosha/Deng(sign-and-trade)/ThomasorNoah/#1DraftPick

Deng is really the only star on that team, and is prolly worth 10M$ a season. If we get him in a sign-and-trade, we don't need to take on additional players to match salaries. He fills a need at SF. Sefolosha is a great defender at the SG spot, and if we can use Noah/Thomas or Odom to get an additional SG (Barbosa?), we'll be set.

Bynum/KwameBrown/Mihm
Odom/Turiaf/
Deng/RadMan/Walton
Barbosa/Sefolosha/Mo
Crit/Farmar/Fish

is a young and deep team.

As for Chicago:

Wallace/PJ Brown
Smith/Noah (or Thomas)
Nocioni
Kobe/Gordon
Hinrich/Duhon

Admittedly, it's a bit thin up front, but that's their problem, not ours :)

Rick Friedman

first off, i give you much respect as a laker fan.

"When you say, "Let our young guys play and leave the drama for Day of Our Lives" I have to wonder what you think the outcome of the season would be without a serious scorer."

i believe we need to take a few steps back before we can move forward. Kobe as the #1 IN LOS ANGELES is clearing as detrimental as it is beneficial.

"None of us on this blog, I believe, have any taste for the drama. You must concede that from Media Day until Dr. Buss spoke out that the drama, at least publicly, had subsided."

i'm going to give the benefit of the doubt to Buss. The guy has not proven to be a "bumbling idiot" as kobe has tried to portray the laker organization. Perhaps, Buss has had enough of the bull shizzle and is declaring that it's time for kobe to go.

"As Dr. Buss has admitted, not a single team in the NBA has come forward with a worthy trade proposal."

and why would a team gut it's core to acquire kobe? Kobe basically reduced his trade value and the trade value of his teammates with the Summer of Rage.

“But if you refuse to accept that the ownership and management have totally screwed up the franchise, I have to tell you that you're not being honest with yourself. To be sure, Kobe's no saint; but Buss, Buss and Kupchak are certainly sinners.”

I don’t believe management “screwed up the franchise”. I believe management was given 2 unappealing choices in 2004 and given the choice, management picked the lesser of two evils….keep kobe over shaq. If anything, I blame management for not trading kobe earlier especially during the Lebron Sweepstakes. Since 2004, management has been quietly rebuilding the team without sacrificing the revenue….revenue brought in by the “Circus Act” in kobe. Management had a legit chance to get KG this summer and I firmly believe kobe was a major deterrent. THAT’S NOT MANAGEMENT’S FAULT. I also believe that management has been trying to get free agents to play in LA, but kobe’s bad reputation as a selfish player, a player who values his INDIVIDUAL LEGACY OVER TEAM SUCCESS, has deterred high-quality free agents from playing in LA. THAT’S NOT MANAGEMENT’S FAULT.

I WILL BE POSITIVE ONCE THE KOBE ISSUE IS RESOLVED.

Rick

"Sounds like the players are trying to focus on the right things. Now, if only the front office can shut-the-f*** up, maybe the Lakers can get it together over the next two weeks and start playing some good basketball."

please note that J-Critt sounds like a savvy young man at 19-years-old. Rise above the kobe-bull and focus on b-ball. J-critt knows that he has an extraordinary opportunity to be the face of the laker franchise, so he's got to play the politics the right way. kobe should learn a few things from J-critt.

I don't think it matters in the least what we say here, the FO is going to do whatever they want. Right now, since Kobe isn't happy and we don't have the resources to make him happy, I'm guessing they trade him. At this point, i don't see how you don't, you can't just let him walk for nothing. I'm guessing if any contending team is really playing below their expectations, you could see things heating up by the trade deadline.

It owuld be better to upgrade the team, but I don't see how you do that with our personnel. So, I suspect a real rebuilding effort will take place for next year.

PHIL to KL: F-U

Let's get ready for some Kobe/Coby- Ball!

KL,
A good case could be made that you are NOT a Laker loyalist, in spite of your assertions. Putting aside your objections to consider Kobe as the best player in the game (an increasing number of experts and top players are saying that), systematic attacks on the piece around which the Lakers chose to build doesn't strike me as particularly loyal behavior. You seem to be loyal on conditions that you impose and which the Lakers ownership and front office have never embraced.

Disliking someone you see as disloyal (with some justification) doesn't automatically make you loyal, especially as the clear preference of Buss, the owner, is keep things pretty much the way they are. Now if you aren't loyal to the way things are, you are in the same category as Kobe! So isn't it a bit contradictory to criticize him for the same crimes you're guilty of?

Just asking.

Does anyone see a parallel between the situation of Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien at NBC? Sounds to me similar to the state of the Lakers in 2004. O'Brien is being groomed to replace Leno who would move over to less of a starring role. But the weightier Leno doesn't want to play that game and let the upstart take over his spot as leader. At the same time NBC doesn't want to lose Leno and if it doesn't maintain its commitment to O'Brien, he's likely to bolt (to the Clippers????).

Will NBC duplicate Buss's 2004 strategy?

BALLAD OF THE LAKERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The doubters sat waiting for them to fail
Training camp came and they began to jell
L.O. looked like an allstar to be
Kobe appeared to be the new MVP
Bynum came out like the second coming of Shaq
Can I believe my eyes Sahsa is on the attack
The Lakers appeared strong and stood tall
And Kwame, yes Kwame caught every damn ball
Dfish kept all of the crew in line
Not one Laker was heard to whine.
The triangle my friend was a thjing of beauty
Even Scootie and Michael had to come to see
The season started and wouldnt you know
In November The Lakers beat every damn foe.
December and January went the same way
The Lakers became the Team, teams were afraid to play
They held to under seventy the high flying Suns
That was the same game Kobe scored 101
The regular season ended and they were so great
They broke the Bulls record they were 74 and 8
Then came the Playoffs and Im sure that you know
They ended up winning 16 in a row.
Mitch cried for joy and Jim gave up the crack
Jerry retook his Office the Lakers were Back
9Rings became 10 which made Phil the Best
For three years in a row The Lakers ruled the West
For each of those years Kobe won the MVP
Then Kobe retired and handed Bynum the Keys
But Bynum said NO! Kobe we both can drive
So when Kobe retired instead of 3 they won 5.
Which gave Kobe 8 NBA Titles and 5 MVPs
And Kobe not MJ became greatest in NBA history
AND NOW ROLL CALL:
