Live chat today!
UPDATE (6:45 pm): Here's the transcript. Wild fun had by all.
Hey, all:
It's Tuesday, and in what's hopefully going to become an "every other week thing," BK and I are hosting a live chat from 1 to 2 p.m. Pacific time. Drop by and ask us some questions (no math!), and we'll do our best to provide a little insight. Go to http://chat.latimes.com and enter a user name when prompted to enter the Sports Chat room. No e-mail or password is needed. We'll see everyone there (except those who don't enjoy the format, which makes the hour a fantastic time to get a haircut).

Paulie, "Mamba24 - your enthusiasm is childish but God bless you for being young. I am not." Hey Paulie, it's not nice to call names. So let me see I'm childish but you are not. WOW! If somebody on the block said that to me.....I'll tell you what Pauuuulllie sounds like Girrrlliee to me. Now Paulie does that make you feel good. Or maybe if I said Paulieeee sounds like a Punks name to me you got a response? Once again I'll say this. Don't mistake my enthusiam on the Blog for me. I'll tolerate to a certain extent name calling, but don't ever, ever equate me with a Punk, PUNK! Posted by: Mamba24 | September 25, 2007 at 05:25 AM

"I am not for trading Kobe, but this was brought up on another site."
I'm not for trading kobe either, but for different reasons.
Kobe kicked shaq out of town to be the "man" and now kobe wants to run away like a little girl. So much for being the "best player on the planet".
Kobe ain't nothing but a Primadonna like Britney Spears.
Kobe's a big-time B-I-A-T-C-H and a QUITTER.
To my Kobe Loving friends, DOES KOBE EVEN WANT TO BE A LAKER???
I know "yeah, but". i say, yeah-but this! Kobe's a loser.

Laker FO needs to get AK-47 to play in LA, if possible, without giving up LO or Bynum. Give Kwame's expiring contract and Cook's defense plus whatever else Utah wants for AK-47.
Keep the Malcontent and see if kobe is a 50% quitter or 100% quitter. if kobe's a 50% quitter, then we'll take his expiring contract and get a real "superstar" in Wade or LBJ when those guys are available. The "beast" in the East known as Dwight Howard would be a nice piece to the puzzle.

Although I would sign off on the
Shawn Marion for Lamar Odom and Brian Cook trade idea.
I think the Jermaine O'Neal for
Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum fits better for the Lakers.
Jermaine O'Neal fits the Phil Jackson half court style. He gives the down low scoring and defensive presence that Marion does not as much.
He is bigger than Shawn Marion as is Odom. Odom does not match Marion's energy all the time so I'd move him but JO would fit much better.
JO would make us all forget about what Bynum did and will do along with Lamar Odom.

Beast -
I agree but AK-47 has stated that not only does he want out of Utah, he wants out of the US and he wants to go home where his country needs him...I like his shot blocking ability though...

Long Time Laker Fan ,
I dont believe the Lakers will be forced to trade Kobe next summer if the Lakers don't make the second round. It actually depends on what the salary cap will be...
If the Lakers lose Kwame, Mihm, and Evans next year, does that bring up under the cap?

LakerBlake,
Larry Bird, is that you!?
Posted by: zen | September 25, 2007 at 12:56 PM
On Marion,
I could see us trading for Marion if we have someone ready to step into the 4 spot. That would be a concern for me because Marion in our system, has to play the 3. He gets away with playing the 4 with the Suns because of their system. My other concern is the money. He wants 20 mil a year, thats Kobe money. Not sure you want to pay a very good player, superstar money.

'The F-U Brigade' obviously have not been doing their basketball homework!!!
Last week we saw the Bucks' say F-U Miami.
So don't you think the Magic, the Heat and the Cavs will say F-U Lakers we will match your offers, our guys are 'Restricted Free Agents'!!! Just keep to what you know which is spouting hate for Kobe, let the adults talk about basketball matters!!!
Aaarrrhhhh!!

"I agree but AK-47 has stated that not only does he want out of Utah, he wants out of the US and he wants to go home where his country needs him...I like his shot blocking ability though..."
AK-47 strikes me as an emotioanl type. my evidence is him crying last year. perhaps AK-47 is having a hissy fit because he was the "big fish in a small pond" when Utah sucked and now is a "small fish in a big pond" with the re-emergence of Utah as a Western Powerhouse. i don't know if AK-47's personality will fit with kobe, but as far as i'm concerned, kobe is as good as gone, so AK-47, Odom and Bynum would be a nice neucleus of role players for an eventual bid for a real "franchise guy". what do you think?

SEPTEMBER 24, 2007- A NEW DAY and A New Thread in the Blog!
And the Los Angeles Lakers front office, in an attempt to return the team to its former glory, does ..... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
COME ON GUYS - Marion's up for grabs - JO's up for grabs - AK47's up for grabs. Can we do SOMETHING except marching in with the same tired lineup (plus an aging D-Fish) and hoping for a better finish???

This isn't Larry Bird.
This is an old school Lakers fan from the 80s trying to win who does not believe in all of these new school players many of you worship and would like to give MAX contracts to based on potential like

"THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY IS DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS"
All pokes and jokes aside, I share your sentiments but YOU SHOULD REALLY STOP TALKING ABOUT A JERMAINE O'NEAL TRADE
as long as you're smoking this
anything but Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum for JO trade idea.
Not going to happen and not worth not happening!
So when you say you want players state what you're willing to give up.
Heck we all want all the potentially available players for Kwame Brown and Vlad Rad but it's not gone happen.

I think you are going to drink the Socks Bynum kool aid in November and December when he comes out playing well.
When he "pees" on himself up against Tim Duncan and Amare Stoudamire when it really counts in May then I'll say I told you so.
But oh, you'll pay the price of admission for his growth while the best player in the game today and a top 20 all time withers as we wait on
Socks Baby Bynum to get ready for big time.
Who do you compare the kid too?
You can't take a great one from the 70s, 80s, or 90s cause they didn't take 3 yrs or more to develop.
He does not even stack up against this decades players.
So WTF.
I mean go ahead and give him a MAX contract next summer and enjoy your bargain contract year this yr with him while LOSING. WHUPPIE
You should make your name Staples Center that would work better. The Forum didn't put up with this nonsense.

If we could trade Brian Cook for Jannero Pargo, we just might be able to squeak out a 6 seed this May - anybody agree?
Posted by: Paulie | September 25, 2007 at 04:15 PM
zen,
>>I dont believe the Lakers will be forced to trade Kobe next summer if the Lakers
>> don't make the second round. It actually depends on what the salary cap
>>will be...
Well, they're not forced to do anything. They can keep Kobe for two more years
regardless of what Kobe wants or how well or badly the team does. But if they do
keep him for two years and fail to improve, then in the summer of 2009, Kobe will
opt out and the Lakers will get absolutely nothing for him. Do you remember
the last time a top-5 player left his team and they got no compensation? It was
when Shaq left Orlando to come to LA in 1996. You know how many playoff
series Orlando has won since 1996? None.
>>>If the Lakers lose Kwame, Mihm, and Evans next year, does that bring up
>>>under the cap?
Just barely. Assuming they keep Farmar and Bynum, and let Kwame, Sasha,
Evans, and Turiaf go, and assuming Mihm opts out of his contract, their contracts
for the 2008-09 season add up to 54,702,645. But they have to actually waive
their bird rights to Turiaf, Evans, Sasha, Kwame, and Mihm to get to that number.
If they do that, they'd have around 3 million worth of cap space, and then they'd
have the MLE beyond that. OTOH, if they keep their bird rights, they can
pay any of those 5 players whatever to sign them and still have the MLE as
well. And you can't add the MLE to the free cap space, so the maximum
contract the Lakers would be able to offer any free agent (other than their own)
would be the MLE.

"I've been trying to civilize KL, actually. And I think it's worked to some degree. Compare his posts of the last week or so with those of a month or two ago. He's calmer and less vicious now."
Thanks Dad!
I feel more "civilized" now that you've come around. i'm not sure how long you've been around this blog, but i haven't changed a bit since i've gotten here regardless of the blogger. i appreciate that you feel you've "civilized" a savage beast, but in reality, i treat you like i do any other blogger (eg, Tha Show, RMA, Rick Friedman, Nemia, etc.) who speaks to me like a regular person...i speak to them like a regular person.
i know you're trying to antagonize me and it ain't working. many bloggers have tried and failed miserably. do you see LakerTom or Mitchell?
Don't get me wrong, i still believe that most NBA players have figuratively said to kobe "F-U" and don't want to play alongside The Malcontent. I still believe that kobe chased shaq away and i believe that most GMs don't give kobe a lot of stock as being the "best player on the planet" aka the so-called "franchise player"....at least not enough to gut a group of 5 really good players for a super-duper-uber ONE player.
so i say with great enthusiasm, "thank you for civilizing me, now bugger off".

I'm with you on making as many changes as we need without giving up Kobe, Odom or Bynum. We're not better off with Marion minus Odom. We need to keep Bynum becuase kobe's got one foot out the door. AK-47's a whimp, but he a skilled whimp.

Realgm article about Kobe and leverage -
http://tinyurl.com/2hc52o
Here's what I think is the most salient paragraph:
"In regard to other GMs, until the trade deadline of this year, the Lakers have as
much leverage as they are going to get. Kobe is in his prime, he is healthy, he is
slimmed down, and at the peak of his trade value. The Lakers can, and should,
ask the world for Kobe. Without hesitation, they can ask for young players, other
superstars and draft picks, and other GMs will have little place to protest the
Lakers’ requests. If a team wants him bad enough right now, they better be
willing to part with great pieces. However, as each day passes, the Lakers power
grows weaker as Kobe and the other GMs grows stronger.

i'm not down for Kirlenko for anybody straight up besides expiring contracts (kwame) and guys like Cook. If you gave me Boozer and Willams for Kobe, i'll take it in a heartbeat. Lakers will be in the West Semis and Utah will get bounced in the first round AFTER kobe gets biatched slapped by Grumpy Sloan all season long. I don't think Utah is that stupid to give up Boozer and Williams for The Malcontent, but if Laker FO can pull it off.......

Long Time,
That is a well-thought out article. Which teams will be able to give enough for Kobe to make the Lakers happy, and still have enough left to make Kobe happy? Teams with real high draft picks (which might satisfy the Lakers) would not be good enough to be on Kobe's list.
It pretty much has to be one of the serious contenders: Chicago, Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix.
Posted by: exhelodrvr | September 25, 2007 at 07:37 PM
Interesting article:
http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/la-sp-heisler26sep26,0,5737614.column?page=1&coll=la-home-center
Question for AK and/or BK: The article seems to assume that Kobe is gonna be in camp next week, not missing a day. But it doesn't really give any reason for this conclusion, other than the point that Kobe and Kupchak have been in regular, seemingly peaceful contact. You guys know anything about this?
It was good to hear he'll be there, and apparently everyone is just ready to move on and play ball.
CALI KING
Posted by: CALI KING | September 25, 2007 at 07:39 PM
BTW, Kupcake came on the radio today and basically said that some of the free agents that are available the Lakers are not making a play for, unless they "fall into our lap". This is what the dude said. He basically said that for some guys, the other GM has to do the heavy lifting in order for that guy to wind up here. There are basically 3 free agents on the market in this categeroy, right? So, we have a short list of dudes that we can speculate about the Lakers pretty much ignoring.
He said this on the radio! He also said that he doesn't think that any deals are forthcoming before training camp.

FO to KB. F-U!

I'm think'in Kwame on the cover of Sports Illustrated wearing his favorite pair of white fishnet stockings, throwing down a slam but the ball is slipping out of his hands and Phil and Kobe are in the background with frowns on their faces...
LT Laker Fan, 100% guarantee Kobe opts out and the main reason is he wants more money. As far as I can see, this is ALL about money.
"Bryant also has the maximum-allowed 15 percent trade bonus on remaining salary (one option year excluded) in his contract, meaning he is understood to receive an extra $9.6 million from his new team if he is traded this summer, $6.6 million if next summer. That financial boost further makes a trade Bryant's best course of action if he wants to leave the Lakers. A lesser option for him would be exercising the right to opt out of his contract in 2009, which would leave the Lakers without compensation."
##########
Kobe makes MORE money if he acts ugly enough to force a trade. If they refuse to trade him, he can opt out which was negotiated because the collective bargaining agreement changes that year and he can get MORE MONEY. There's all kinds of rumors Kobe hasn't saved much of the money he has made, hell Vanessa wears $4 million of it as an apology ring. Just because he's an NBA star doesn't mean he knows how to manage his money. I do give him an Academy Award for his performance on the radio when he pretended to get worked up and grudginly issue his on air trade demand when it came out later that he had issued his trade demand BEFORE he went on the radio...
Bravo! (clapping) Bravo Kobe! It's all about improving the Lakers, it has NOTHING to do with money... riiiight....
Kwame Brown in a fishnet stocking! Boom! That'll stick in your memory... LOL!

kobe's not even making 20mill per year. Shaq wanted 30 mill per year and now he's making 20 mill per year.
check the salaries, kobe's like ~10 on the list of highest salaries.
oh yeah, btw, kobe wanted a team to play with. him being the lead player and somebody GOOD playing the second fiddle.

Glad to see that some of today's online chat was devoted to the problem of getting the ball to Kobe too often. One of my pet peeves is how the other four guys on the floor stand around like paying spectators watching the Kobe show.
I disagree with whomever said the player who wanted the ball when it could go to Kobe had to have an outsized ego.
Any player worth his salt who understood Basketball 101 would simply know that the smart thing to do when the other team swarms Kobe is recognize that it is the opportunity for him to shoot the ball when he's open.
Sure, Kobe is the best guy on the floor. That's a given. But if you're the open man, you'd better have the touch and get the ball to the hoop. That's what you're paid for.
Getting Kobe the ball when there are two seconds on the shot clock is suicide. Why do that? Yet we've all seen it happen over and over and over.
Phil's definitely got his work cut out for him. This roster is just bulging with lethargic players, whether we're talking about offense and defense.
So much time on this blog is devoted to which guy can do this and which guy can't do that. If each man on the roster plays within his game -- that is, executing the plays he is good at -- the Lakers roster isn't too short on ability. What this roster has shown that it lacks is willpower, energy, focus, and determination.
Guys like Cookie can't keep forgetting their defensive assignments every time they get down to the other end of the floor. Guys like Walton can't lose focus and zone out when it's time to play defense. What each of the players needs more of is the kind of determination that Ronny shows. He's a guy who always plays better than his natural ability would seem to allow.
What the Spurs, Mavericks and Suns seem to have that the Lakers don't seem to have is a commitment to excellence, a commitment to playing winning basketball. For each player, that has to come from within.
Shawn Marion would be nice. Jermaine O'Neal would be nice. But what separates them from many guys currently on the Laker roster is really their ability to concentrate and play hard.
So much of basketball is mental as opposed to physical. A guy who plays a strong mental game is always at an advantage. The Lakers as a group need to find that advantage. The first step is buying into the concept.and that's where the work should begin at the start of camp.
Last season Phil gave all these guys a really long leash. It's not really his style to shorten it, but I suspect that he, too, recognizes what must be done, and will adapt to it.
Go Lakers! I'm really happy that Purple & Gold time is just around the corner.

Yahoo lists Mihm at Height: 7-0 Weight: 265
look at picture 2 on the bottom, it's not even close, Bynum is HUGE, he definitely looks like he put in some leg work.
"Andrew Bynum has been in the weight room during the summer and it’s noticeable. He finished off one game with a monster alley-oop from Luke Walton and let out an exuberant scream."

I guess PJ and I are on the same wavelength. Here's what he says in Mark Heisler's new article:
"I think as a coach, you play with what's given you. But when chemistry's not good, that's the one thing I want to make sure, that we have good chemistry, that guys want to play for each other and with each other....
"If you've got guys who are willing to sacrifice, you can be talent-poor and still win. If your heart's not in it, you can't put your body in it and expect to succeed."

As for what Kobe will do, "I have no reason to think he won't report," General Manager Mitch Kupchak said Tuesday.
Wow! The long, tortuous summer may finally be over for Laker fans.

I too am ecstatic the season is just around the corner. Though I'm apprehensive about what will take place this season.

Finally, we see some write ups again about kobe and the lakers. We dont hear to much info for the last 3 weeks. Phoenix is now thingking of trading Shawn Marion for LO & most probably Cook, lakers should make it a deal now since they're (phoenix ) now open for a trade talks. Wether its JO for L.O and Bynum or Shawn Marion for LO and Cook lakers should make this trade a done deal. Lakers need a new and exciting player that will help them to become a championship team.

I don't think there's a chance we get Marion. I don't Phoenix wants to deal with us, I don't think we would give them what they would be interested in.
I think Utah's got a much better shot at him.
Long Time, that was an interesting read.

On Marion,
Hey I'm a suns fan and there have been reports over here that the suns might trade Marion and Banks for Odom and Cook. Me personally think this would help both teams on offence and Marion would give the lakers that defensive player to guard anyone they wanted. Also it came out that Marion told the suns organization that he would welcome a trade and that he would love to play for the lakers and along side Kobe. Me personally don't really care if he goes there because he won't help you guys that much. You guys might get out of the first round, but won't beat Phoenix, Dallas or San Antonio. So, I was just wondering as fans would you guys like that trade or not.

CORLISS WILLIAMSON TO KOBE: "F-U"
Corliss Williamson announced on Tuesday that he is retiring from the NBA.
The loss of 'Big Nasty' will help clear up some of the logjam at power forward in Sacramento, although they still have Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Kenny Thomas and Mikki Moore around to fight for minutes. Sep. 25 - 3:59 pm et

SHAWN MARION SOON TO TELL KOBE: "F-U"
Shawn Marion has requested to be traded by the Phoenix Suns.
"I'm tired of hearing my name in trades," Marion said by phone from his Chicago home Tuesday night. "I love my fans in Phoenix but I think it's time for me to move on." Marion is tired of hearing about trade rumors and is not happy about the fact he has not been offered a contract extension, or that he shares the spot light with Amare Stoudemire and Steve Nash. If he gets moved, and chances are he will be, his fantasy value will likely take a hit. Stay tuned. Sep. 26 - 2:45 am et

BRIAN SKINNER TO KOBE: "F-U"
Eight-year veteran Brian Skinner and the Suns agreed to terms Monday on a one-year veteran's minimum deal, half of which is guaranteed.
If Skinner remains on the team when opening day rosters are set Oct. 29, his $1.1 million salary will be fully guaranteed. Skinner will offer Phoenix rebounding and defense with enough speed to play at the Suns' pace. It's possible he could have a little fantasy value in Phoenix, but it might take an injury for it to happen. "This is an opportunity to be on the inside looking out," Skinner said after his Thursday workout for Phoenix. He'll help back up both the power forward and center position for the Suns. THE TOP TWO EXCUSES YOU WILL FIND ON THE BLOG WHY "IT ALWAYS NOT KOBIATCH'S FAULT"
"Meanwhile several good players have said that they'd love to play with Kobe, and that they were disappointed that they couldn't."
"Miami's title in 2006 was because of the refs not Shaq. Shaq at this point is less useful than Zo."

Marion asking Suns for trade
FOXSports.com, Updated 4 minutes ago
Shawn Marion is sick of the trade rumors. So now he's making a trade request.
The forward told the Arizona Republic he wants out, saying "I'm tired of hearing my name in trades. I love my fans in Phoenix but I think it's time for me to move on."
There have been rumors swirling of a trade to the Jazz or the Lakers, while Marion has pushed the team for an extension of his current deal. He is the team's highest-paid player, due $16.4 million for this year and $17.8 million next.
He's said to have been seeking a three-year extension at $20 million per, but he says a conflict over an extension is only "part of why" he wants out.
"Regardless of everything that went on with the extension, I'm tired of hearing my name in trade rumors. It's time for me to move on. I felt like they tried to force my hand to Boston with the (Kevin) Garnett stuff," Marion told the paper.
There was reportedly a proposed three-way trade sending Garnett to Phoenix and Marion to Boston that Marion shot down over the summer.
So where would he like to go?
The Lakers look good to him.
"You have a great organization, great ownership there with the Lakers. I don't see no problems with playing there," Marion told The Sporting News.

So, Cook has benn working on his post moves and looks more comfortable down on the low block. Will that mean he makes the roster or that he's going to be better for trade bait?
