No news. Any ideas?

August 20, 2007 |  6:41 pm

So I know people have been looking for a new thread, and I've been looking around for some news ... but really, there isn't any.  At least nothing I can find.  So anyone have any ideas?  Places to take this one?   There's always Kobe (haha).  You got your USA Basketball, trade ideas, hypothetical mascot ideas.  Anything.  I'll accept solicitations, and then perhaps start a new, new thread.

UPDATE:  Well, there is something new to talk about.  Sort of.  More on the Kobe situation, courtesy of ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan.  Bryant continues to be vague about his status, leading Sheridan to say something that basically summarizes how I've felt for a while, given the current state of the roster and prospects for quick improvement:  "Around the league, most people seem to think it boils down to this: Kobe still wants out, but the Lakers won't trade him -- at least that's the impression being left by Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak, who was unavailable for comment because he is not due back from a European vacation until Friday."

Of course, there's no way to know for sure, but it's the feeling I get as well.

Like you said lack of big news lately and around here its been the same ol thing. Trade proposals that won't happen.. Gripes, Complaints and confrontations.

A few interviews would be great if you could land them, seems like everyone wants to here from Bynum, I'd like to hear from L.O. or J., Critt. Another great idea would be if you could get someone on the roster to "LIVE BLOG" with us for an hour or so.. I know that's a scary thought (subjecting them to us) but with some safeguards in place it might not be too bad. Hopefully KL won't go into rare form and cause Bynum to slice his neck or cause Kobe to give up b-ball for life.
I really think that would go over HUGE, we'd love to be able to let the guys know how much we do support them and hopefully get some inside info. (generic info.) direct from the team. B. Shaw and Rambis are also on the wanted list for me, pick their brains and lets hear what they think about the team.
Just a thought.

AZ and Laker Lover,

exactly. so why are so many against trading lamar odom?

we haven't won anything with the guy. he is a number 3 option.

paying kwame $9 million is a joke. a sad joke.

apparently the lakers don't wanna give up a potentially good player and a number 3 option for a bonafide #2 option.

sucks to be us.

hariyahu

"What do you think?? Any issues with this trade?"

Please take your trade proposal and stick it up your arse. Gordon+Hinrich=Kobe? What are you nuts? I can't believe i'm wasting my 3rd post on you.

Do you even play the sport or do you sit on your computer, in between updating software or telling someone to reboot, dreaming up ways of matching up trades on ESPN's Trade Machine?

Nevermind that Chicago has already told kobe to go "F" himself. What makes you think Chicago's going to deal for the Big Cancer Knowns as Kobe the KLown (get it, clown spelled with "KL"?)?

Kobe is done as a serious franchise player. The best kobe can do now is put up a great show....hey, kind of like the past 3 seasons as follows:

*yougest to 19000
*all-star mvp
*scoring champ on a loser team
*butt of everyone's jokes
*50+ point streak
*pathetic "love me, hate me" radio tour

Andrew Z,

good point. I was one of the 1st to question them trading Butler for butter fingers Brown, but i'm sure most of the ppl on this site questioned it when it happened also.

So if the Lakers were able to acquire LO without giving up Odom, do you think Buss would take on Kobe, Odom, and JO's salary all together?

jormea

"Superstars won't come to play with Sasha and Brian Cook and Lamar Odom."

you're 100% correct. Superstars play with guys like Shaq when shaq was still in his prime in 2004. The same Shaq that kobe decided it was better to do without. Since when did winning required qualifiers? I thought winning was winning.....i must be an idealist.

I think winning is the same in any language. Please note that the opposite of winning is whinning....know the difference?

tha show, the guy has locked himself in a box, his "people" are clearly telling him not to say anything because of the position he has put himself in.

If he wanted to be here and everything had been cleared up, he would have answered those questions directly instead of being so hazy in his answers. "Ask Mitch"? What kind of response is that?

If he doesn't want to be here but the Lakers won't trade him, his best option is to shut up and not damage his trade value so the Lakers can quietly try to move him at some point.

His only other option is to hold out and completely destroy whatever "image" he still has left.

Kobe put himself in this position by being so SELFISH after the season. Here's our GREAT LEADER on tv saying, "me me me, I I I" and saying his teammates aren't worthy of being "lead" by him. Again, the contrast with Lebron is remarkable. Lebron told a ROOKIE to keep shooting this year, even in the playoffs. Lebron just said, yeah, I know we're looking to improve but WE NEED to re-sign those 2 guys and roll with whatever we have.

Compare to the "leadership" skills Kobe has exhibited... I don't care how "Hobbit" or any of the other professional message board posters tries to slant this, THIS IS HOW IT IS. Period. and it looks BAD and you wonder why the Lakers can't bring anyone in - at a reasonable price?

Guys aren't going to take less money to come here, not with Kobe. They would with Shaq though... hmmmm...

LakerFaze-

Yeah, it's the dog days, for sure. But hopefully we'll have an interview or two set up soon. We're working on some other stuff as well that hopefully will enhance the site. As for chats with players, that could be tough for now, but in general, live chats are (fingers crossed) coming soon.

BK

This is getting nowhere.
The only solution that is getting clear is for Kobe to go out and new guys to come in.
The longer we drag on this the more problem will be for our Lakers team.
There will be no teamwork as long as Kobe is in there.
He has already destroyed this team.

ive stopped reading this blog cause of all the garbage from KL and taos hummm all day.

KLBeast,
That is were your wrong. Superstars go where the money is, not where the other superstars are. Money is always first unless you are over the hill looking for a championship.

TaosHum,

you must have some awesome insider sources.

if kobe wanted out, he would keep yappin about it.

why is he making positive comments about walton, mihm and the return of derek fisher?

while he wants the lakers to sign a big fish (o'neal), he is happy to know that the lakers are keeping/signing role players like luke, mihm and fisher.

if the lakers can lure in that big fish, kobe will stay. at least i think so.

just because YOU WANT kobe to be traded doesn't mean it will it happen.

just like me wanting a new front office, even though it probably won't happen.

I apologize if you couldn't watch it guys. It was posted at 4 in the morning, unedited if you can believe it. They actually stopped several times to get the mic fixed.

I'll see if I can kind of do a transcript of it.

In the meantime try again... :-)

http://cbs2.com/local/local_story_232184318.html

Can anyone provide an update to the Reggie Miller to the Celtics rumors from a couple weeks ago? I'm avoiding almost all sports media due to the 'all Michael Vick, all the time' coverage. Thanks!

greek dude, why don't you add something to the conversation then? If my posts are so horrible, why do you read them? Hmmm? Why don't you write a flowery post about how wonderful Kobe is and the great leadership skills he has exhibited this summer instead of complaining about someone who is taking the time to post here?

zen

"That is were your wrong. Superstars go where the money is, not where the other superstars are. Money is always first unless you are over the hill looking for a championship."

So shaq had his choice of any place to go in 2004...why did he pick Miami all things equal?

Shaq had his choice to go anywhere he wanted in 1996...why did he pick LA?

Chumps go to places solely for the money. Winners balance money and opportunity.

Lots of guys make money in the NBA, but there are very few true winners.....and kobe ain't a winner. kobe is only a winner because of his fortunate circumstances of playing with shaq. i'll note that the favorable circumstances kobe later crapped on in his insatiable quest to be the "man" in LA.

Well, now kobe's the "man" (more like man's man), but acts more like the "child" kobe once called the real Superman named Shaq "kobe's" Daddy. haha...$hits and giggles.....

Andrew Z,

Thank you for that post, I've been trying to explain how bone-headed the management has been with their spending for a while now. You can also add Utah and Detroit to that list. I will never forgive Mitch for trading away Caron. That move has to rank as probably the dumbest trade in all of sports history. You know what? That's not even the kicker. After Brian Grant's contract expired, guess what management did? They gave Kwame Brown a one year extension!! I'm shaking my head in disbelief as I am typing. What next, sign Sasha Vujacic for an extension?!

Kobe Lover Beast,

Yes, please waste another 2 posts on me - the sooner we get rid of you (alas, if only for the day), the better it is for the blog.

For post number 1:

Would you say 13 is greater than 14? Is that based on fact, or one of your "opinions" ?

For post number 2:

I have a clogged drain at home - would you be able to help clean it up?
Seriously, though - I think Shaq rode Kobe's coat-tails to 3 MVPs/titles. He didn't do squat till he reached the Finals, after which he woke up for 4 or 5 games. Kobe was the REAL MVP of those playoffs. Care to comment?

Please - lets get those 2 posts out of the way so that you can go back to whatever it is you do with your life.

tripgame,

I definitely think Buss would take on all three salaries, if only for two years (LO expires in two years). I wouldn't expect any big influx of free agents in the offseasons, but I think the idea of having those three on the roster at once would be very appealing. I would put that three up against any other three in the league. With role guys like Fish, Walton, Turiaf, Evans, Farmar, Vlad, Mihm, etc. I would put us on a very short list of legitimate contenders.

tha show, nobody in their right mind WANTS to trade Kobe. Kobe is obviously a great player but the message he is sending out is that he doesn't want to be here, regardless of what players the Lakers bring in. What player that wants to be on a team refuses to clear up a question of whether he wants to be on a team or not? LOL!

If Kobe is going to push the issue, there is actually very little time (in terms of years) to move him while his asking price is still high. There's also the very real risk of Kobe getting injured somehow and not being able to come back from that and be as good as he was before. Then he wouldn't opt out and we'll carry the equivalent of an old Scottie Pippen for however long that contract lasts. I mean, there's 20 different angles to look at on this, not just the simple fact that he is a great player.

Apparently, nobody wants to talk about these things, everybody gets in a huff for simply mentioning the obvious. Do I want to trade Kobe? No. Should the possibility be considered that, that might be one of the eventual outcomes of this mess? Yes. But if somebody dares to post that, you get a ridiculous response like "greek dude" who is so afraid to talk about anything, HE ATTACKS THE POSTER! LOL! sad...

Faith-

Yeah, the unedited thing was a little odd. I particularly like the part where Kobe and Jim slap hands and give each other a little hug. Not exactly the most hard hitting interview I've ever seen.

BK

KLBeast(the real one),

Actually, Shaq didn't really have a choice on where he wanted to go since he was still under contract. Out of respect, the Lakers presented him with a couple of options that would work out for both sides, and he agreed to play in Miami since he had a home there and because of the potential of Wade. In 96, West cleared up some massive cap space to sign Shaq. Aside from Orlando, the Lakers were offering the most money. The reason he didn't sign with Orlando was because he felt slighted by the FO. I think just about everyone has a price. And if a team is willing to pay you that type of money then you have to consider it. But too many times a player will choose a crappy team offering a little bit more money than a team with potential offering less. And I agree with you in that regard because those players fail to see the bigger picture by not finding a balance. Kobe is smart because he realizes how dumb management is and he knows that they won't get any smarter with time. I mean would you play out your prime years with a brunch of second string bananas managed by Dumb and Dumber? I know I wouldn't.

tha show,

Also, if trade LO and Bynum for JO and keep Kwame, doesn't a $9 million expiring contract + 1st round pick sound like a good package for a team who has fallen woefully short of expectations and is looking to dump salary at the trade deadline? Don't know who that team would be, but there always is one.

Pick up someone at the All-Star break to make a trio with Kobe and JO and you can be a contender going into the playoffs.

Also, before the draft I would have offered Bynum-Vlad (or player to match salaries) to Sacramento for Artest. I think they would have jumped at getting Bynum for Artest, but they drafted Spencer Hawes so I think that ship has sailed. I would have liked a Kobe-LO-Artest trio with Kwame and Mihm playing center.

But nope, nothing.

BK

Thanks for the reply. No doubt that we are in good hands!

Faith,

The unedited part was truly bizarre. For a second, I thought it was a director's outtake blooper reel. haha.

I guess those having trouble with the link will just have to "sit tight" until it ends up on youtube. haha

AK

greek dude,
Same here, I stopped reading this blog long time ago because of the recycled "hatred" for Kobe of KLBeast that you will read everyday 7 days a week. It's just a waste of time reading this blog because of that "moron"
I just happened to check the blog today after almost 4 weeks of not going here, only to find out it's still the same old thing finding KL shaqBeast's love for Kobe. Hayyyyyyy!!!!

BK,

If it was a movie...it would be a chick flick lol.

Ex,

"Juno,
"Almost everyone was on the 55 WIN BANDWAGON"

Not the smart ones!!"

Amen.

Kobe wants out. Period!

If he wanted to stay he never would have went on his rant. And after, count'em FOUR interviews within this past week, he would have said so. He didn't. His response to Lakers fans was "Sit tight". All this talk about him wanting to remain a Laker is BS. The river denial definitely is running through this blog.

Kobe will opt out or will be traded within the next two seasons.

Another Trade Idea:

Lakers Clipper & Sacramento.

Lakers Get: Artest & Bibby.

Clippers Get: Jordan Farmar help at PG while Shaun Livingston is out, Turiaf Help At C while Elton Brand is out & shooter in Vladimir Radmanovic.

Sacaramento Gets: Core Maggette , Javaris Crittenton Young Pg prospect & Kwame Brown 9 mill in (Expiring Contract) to rebuild .

Lakers New Line Up:

Bibby/Fisher/ Sasha
Kobe/Evans/CobyKarl
Artest/Luke
L.O./Cook
Bynum/Mihm

Championship Contenders if Healthy.

Cap:

Total Salaries

74,087,335

$67.865 mil
Cap Room

Over $6,222,335

Ex,

"Not the smart ones!!"

THAT HURTS! lol.

"Kobe is smart because he realizes how dumb management is and he knows that they won't get any smarter with time. I mean would you play out your prime years with a brunch of second string bananas managed by Dumb and Dumber? I know I wouldn't."

i wouldn't characterize kobe's actions as "smart". More like reflexive to deflect and set blame on others. Remember when kob got in trouble with the Colorado PD? What was kobe's first reaction? it wasn't "i got nothing to say until my lawyer gets here"; it was "well, shaq does it too". What a weasel.

kobe's the one that basically held management's nuts to rid of shaq and now kobe's afraid to accept his mistake of being an a$$hole to shaq which ultimately led to shaq's departure with a big "F-U very much" to kobe. i frankly don't care what management does with kobe, but i hope management doesn't make the same mistake twice and let kobe fully destroy the lakers. we all know kobe's partially destroyed a championship team for his self-serving purposes....

let kobe rot and don't make any stupid trades unless the lakers get enough compensation for BOTH kobe and shaq since it is kobe who's responsible for shaq departure. how much you wanna bet that kobe's going to hurt his knee or turn his ankle this summer? it's karma.....

Bonjour, blog dawgs. Checkin' in from Paris where they don't have much on TV but it just so happened they re ran the Utah / Bulls game 6 with the Jordan jumper and career ending pose.

We talk all the time about how these Lakers were being built in the image of that team. THE thing that stood out watching that rerun isn't MJ (who's wasn't hot that night) or Scottie (who was playing on a bad back) but the overall team defense. Trades or no trades, it's not so much about on the ball defenders, the team D has to rise to another level... another couple of levels. And another level after that.

Tully Moxness,

You asked for an update on Reggie Miller. There is nothing. He's going thru workouts to evaluate if he can come back..

Have a nice day!

Mamba24/10,

You're welcome, because it's all good in the hood.

Vman,

Wouldn't you say that increasing the number of good individual defenders would in turn increase the level of team defense? If you don't have the horses you really can't get it done. You mention the Bulls awesome team defense but they had Jordan, Pippen and Rodman, all three first team All-Defense. Not bad.

Kl,

You said: Might i remind you that the "fat" and "lazy" lable was given my non other than the current kbiatchy LA lone-star

Actually, I thought *I* started that. Man ... Has the vicodin really affected my memory that much? :)

I looked up the Bosu ball last night. Thanks for the tip. It might work.

So this is the week. We find out if Kobe can lead a talented bunch of guys to a championship.

To the one who said Serena was looking fat,

I have to admit that I haven't seen her on TV in about 3 months. I'm not a Tennis fan ...
The last time I saw her on TV, she looked like 135 - 150 lbs of pure muscle.

I'll pay attention next time I hear something about tennis and the Williams sisters.

Faith,
Just getting back for all the (unwarranted) crap some of us took last year! Of course, I'll never mention it again.

At least for the rest of the day.

Faith, didn't you mention something about team defense as well? Da Bulls sho' nough had that. Nothing like a classic re run to bring things into focus.

KLBeast
"let kobe rot and don't make any stupid trades unless the lakers get enough compensation for BOTH kobe and shaq since it is kobe who's responsible for shaq departure. how much you wanna bet that kobe's going to hurt his knee or turn his ankle this summer? it's karma....."

AMEN BROTHER! AND I HAVE TO SAY, I LIKE YOUR OPINION OF THE LAKERS HOLDING KOBIATCH FOR THE DURATION OF HIS CONTRACT UNLESS THEY GET EQUAL VALUE TO MAKE UP FOR THE TRADE OF SHAQ AND TRADING MRS SPEARS AS WELL.

Andrew Z,

You said it buddy. I like Odom, but for that money, I can't help but compare him to other laker cast members. Who was Magic's #2 guy? Is Odom as good as Worthy? Nope. How about Magic's #3 guy, Kareem? Is Odom as goos as him? Nope. How about Magic's number 4 guy, Byron Scott? That good? Nope. Number 5? AC Green? Nope. Darn it! is he as good as Magic's number six guy Cooper? Nope. How about number 7? Rambis? OK. Kobe's #2 guy is better than Magic's seventh best teammate.

We suck.

Wes

KFC Beast,

Can we talk about something other Kobe ruining the Lakers? You're like Mike T--unavoidable. So would you mind using your power for good instead of evil?

Wes

Andrew Z,

Absolutely agree about how great those 3 were overall but in that game Pip was hobblin' and ROdman's numbers were not great for 3 quarters as he dueled Malone. MJ was coastin' on D 'cause he had the whole scoring load. Still he went through an 0-9 stretch. But the rest of those guys all got after it, even Kerr, the spacing, the traps, the boards. There are certain defensive aspects of the game that can be taught, practiced amd executed if you've got the heart and head to do it.

Obviously, we're no where near that level and players do make the difference. Which is why most of us D fans wanted Artest as soon as the season was over. He and Kobe on the wing would have been Doberman D all over again.

Hobbit
"So this is the week. We find out if Kobe can lead a talented bunch of guys to a championship."

I HOPE YOU ARE NOT REFERRING TO THE USA TEAM. LOL!!!

I GUESS YOU LOGIC IS IF KOBIATCH HAS AN ALLSTAR TEAM HE CAN TAKE THEM TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

I GUESS MJ HAD AN ALL STAR TEAM

I GUESS SHAQ HAD AN ALL STAR TEAM.

IF ANYTHING, KOBIATCH BETTER NOT TURN ON THE POSSUM GLARED EYES BECAUSE THEN HIS TEAMMATES BETTER START RUNNING TO THE GOAL TO COLLECT REBOUNDS!

Just read this and found it interesting ;o)

We were talking about players, like always, and whom we’ve both seen this summer that really stood out. He relayed a great story that relates to a bigger debate we’ve had going on since the 2004 NBA Finals, “What’s the difference between a good player and a great player?”. The story went a little something like this:

“They had a voluntary practice last night and there were only three guys there,” my buddy said. “I walked in and the two young rookies (Kevin Durant and Jeff Green) from Seattle were there. Guess who was on the other end of the floor?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “There are so many great players out there. I can’t imagine who else would have been working like that on an off day in Vegas. It had to be one of the young guys, maybe one of those Select Team cats whose trying to make an impression … man, I don’t know who it could have been.”

My friend, refusing to give up the punch line before he had to, wouldn’t budge. “Go ahead, guess,” he said. “You know who it was. You know.”

I knew right then that the guy he was talking about was none other than Kobe Bean Bryant. But before I could say another word he hit me with it. “You know it was Kobe,” he said, pounding home the point he makes to me every time we get on the subject. “That’s why he’s carrying the flag for the league right now. Love him or hate him. It’s his show.”

And he’s right. No matter how many shots I take at Kobe (I’ve actually relaxed on that in the past year or so), the NBA remains his playground. And the fact that he’s locked himself in the gym on a Sunday afternoon in Vegas when no one else (other than those promising young rookies from Seattle) saw the need is even more proof of what we all know to be true - the difference between good and great is the guy who is already there pushing himself to take his game to the ultimate level (and I know that doesn’t equate to championships in a team sport, as Kobe knows as well since his Lakers haven’t won a playoff series since Shaquille O’Neal left for Miami). But we’re talking about individual brilliance and how important it is to not only cultivate your game but that competitive fire that you hope burns inside of every gifted athlete.

The truth is, not everyone is wired that way. Even the guys that spend the entire summer in the lab tweaking their game can’t catch the top dog if he’s working like Kobe. I bet you Durant and Green took notice (and I can only imagine what was going through their impressionable minds). And for young guys there couldn’t be a more valuable lesson learned than the one they got as they walked through the door of that sweatbox of a gym …

- Gunner

Your last post.... Too funny.

Newspaper Headline for Friday August 24th.

"Kobe Bryant throws up an international record 78 shots in the United States 40 point victory over the Virgin Islands."

Who besides me would like to see Kobe's written responses to questions right here as they come in on this board?

I imagine the brothers, the Times, and everyone else would bend over backwards to make it happen were Kobe to give his nod to the idea.

Could there be a better time for the "leader of the team...the best player on the planet" to step up to the plate for his fans and his team? Three hours, that's all. Come on Kobe, give the brothers a ring. Help your franchise out for a change. Your fans and teamates have never needed you more, or at least clarification of your intentions.

Standy by, here come the no-can-do that's unfair GHE whiners!

SO, YOU STOP READING BECAUSE YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH?

Geek dude,
ive stopped reading this blog cause of all the garbage from KL and taos hummm all day.

WELL, IF THE TRUTH HURTS THERE'S ALWAYS KBIATCH24.COM

Zen,
That is were your wrong. Superstars go where the money is, not where the other superstars are. Money is always first unless you are over the hill looking for a championship.

I WOULDN'T SAY GRANT HILL IS OVER THE HILL. STEVE FRANCIS GOT OFFER MORE BY MIAMI BUT HE WENT TO HOUSTON.

KLBeast,
Go ahead and pretend that kobe's the second coming of MJ...kobe ain't no MJ, never was and never will be. Kobe is a present-day Dominic Wilkins....haha...$hits and giggles from KLBeast.

KL, YOU'RE WRONG MAN! KOBIATCH ISN'T DOMINIC WILKINS. HE'S MORE LIKE GERALD WILKINS!!!

KLBeast(the real one),

I'm not going to debate with you again who or what was responsible for Shaq's departure or for the breakup of the Laker dynasty since we've been down that road many times before. I will say that since Shaq's departure, management has made some bone headed moves after another. Management chose Kobe over Shaq, so let's get over it and move on. Let's not kid ourselves by saying management made the wrong decision in signing Kobe over Shaq. Even Mitch is not that dumb. Shaq right now is an old but expensive Ford pickup truck. Yeah, Shaq got his ring but the Miami Heat are in salary cap purgatory because of it. Sure, Kobe wanted "to be the man" of his own team just like Lebron said he wanted to lead his own team. But Kobe never asked for this, not even a 26 year-old MJ would be up to the task of playing alongside Kwame Brown again. Kobe is not the one responsible for the moves post Shaq era, that responsibility falls with management and management only. That's the big picture. One player can only do so much. Say Kobe does leave, we will still have the same management and judging from their track record the future doesn't look so good. I should have just kept this argument short by saying only one name: Kwame.

VMan.

Now you know I'm always talking about defense lol. Actually I feel like one of our greatest needs, left umet is rebounding. While I like what I see in Ronny, and I know full well what LO can do...I still think we need a "rebounder." Then again better rebounding on the part of all of our players would do just as well.

Defensively, set-to-set we had too many breakdowns. We look undisciplined, we played a step slower...skills and aptitude has a lot to do with that of course, but I'm a big believer that it's just as much desire as it is foot speed/athleticism. And currently we're lax on both. I also feel like PJ lost the team last season. Most importantly on defense (offense: remember all those unwise 3s when PJ specifically said no more than 15ish per game?)...breakdowns and playing defense with ones hand (instead of moving) happened way too often. Almost like they didn't practice it at all. This season, if we want to get a step slower (while still a mile away lol), it's going to have to start with that desire, that communication (talk to one another), and PJ.

Here's what I never get...if we see it, why doesn't the FO? I mean it's soo obvious! lol.
