Eddie Money had two tickets to paradise

July 31, 2007 | 12:52 pm

The Celtics now have one Ticket, a purchase made with the intention of traveling to the same destination that Mr. Money had in mind.  Needless to say, this is pretty gosh darn huge.  "Big enough to make David Stern stop weeping about Oden and Durant playing for two teams nobody ever sees" huge.  "Big enough to make Bill Simmons stop weeping about acquiring Ray Allen" huge, especially considering Jesus Shuttlesworth reportedly played a big role in pitching Beantown to Garnett.  Hell, it's even "big enough to overshadow the Lakers signing Coby Karl" huge.

OK, the acquiring of George Karl's undrafted son might have flown under the radar under any circumstances (although it's actually a more inspirational story than KG getting traded).  But when it comes to inspiring Laker fans to sing a tune with an excellent guitar riff, the newest Laker likely won't cut the mustard.  Karl's presence also appears a long shot to prevent Kobe from licking old wounds, a reaction that could make things rather unpleasant.  Thus, it begs the question of where to go from here.

Well, for fans, a trip to El Segundo armed with flaming torches and a cry for Mitch Kupchak's head is unwarranted.  I'm not being a front-office apologist, just realistic.  Disappointed as I am to see Garnett land elsewhere, I don't think this situation is reasonably on Kupchak's shoulders.  By all accounts, an aggressive pitch was made for Garnett.  A failure to put him in purple and gold didn't seem due to a reluctance to part with chips, simply a lack of said chips.  I've said a zillion times that I didn't think the Lakers had the pieces to make KG a Laker.  Here's proof positive.  Sorry, but Boston's offer was better than the Lakers' best counter.  Compare the particulars and it's obvious:

Kwame Brown represents an expiring contract worth 9 million bucks.  Theo Ratliff's is worth 11.7.  I'm hardly qualified to teach mathematics at MIT.  I can barely do long division.  But I remain confident in my belief that 11.7 is more than 9.  Bynum is a promising post player.  Al Jefferson is a promising post player who's more developed than Drew.   That doesn't mean Jefferson's a lock to end up the better player, but it does mean he's pretty a tough commodity to refuse, especially in a holdout for a less-established big man.  In addition to draft picks, the Wolves receive youngsters ranging from "all upside" (Gerald Green) to "potentially solid role player" (Ryan Gomes) to "soon to be blessed with a lot of free time to shop for new guns" (Sebastian Telfair).  All contracts end in 2008, providing a team that won't likely be good for a few seasons some low-risk, short-term options.   And since they won't be solid anytime soon, why take on Lamar Odom's big contract and allow his PT to stymie the growth of Corey Brewer?  Even with the Lakers theoretically willing to take Marko Jaric or Mark Blount's bad salaries, the Celts package makes more sense for a rebuilding team.  If you wanna blame Kupchak for not having the requisite pieces on hand, fair enough.  But otherwise, you're basically blaming him for not being able to con Kevin McHale into taking a clearly less-desirable package.  His moves over the years show McHale may be dumb, but the man ain't stupid.

Assuming Kupchak can enter his office without a private security detail, what should he do while at his desk?  Hopefully not sign off on a panic move that shows fans (and a certain shooting guard) that he's willing to "make noise."  Yeah, noise often reeks of "bold and decisive."  But noise also typically precedes a thumping headache.  The powers that be are already gobbling Excedrin.  No need to willingly end up in rehab for an aspirin addiction.  Jermaine O'Neal, for example, is the likely name to pop up in rumor mills.  Last time he was sewing circle fodder, the deal involved exchanging Odom and Bynum (unless you're counting the Odom-Bynum-Brown for JO-Troy Murphy proposal, but I don't since it was asinine to even consider).  Landing JO gives the Lakers a bigger "name" and certainly brings the much-ballyhooed "noise."  But would it also bring bring the funk?  I don't think so.

JO might shore up the D a bit in between nursing injuries (which happens quite a bit, for those keeping score).   But I don't think he'd transform the Laker hoop into a fortress, either.  In the meantime, you lose what LO provides the offense, especially in turns of it running smoothly.  Yes, offense isn't chief among Laker concerns, but that's assuming it functions at peak capacity.  Remove LO from the equation for a less versatile option and you may downgrade the O more than the D actually improves.  JO is a more consistent scorer, but this still strikes me as a sideways (and expensive) move, and I don't know if it's worth trading two of three pieces with any value simply because it represents "bold action."  Driving headfirst in a brick wall at 90 mph is bold.  Doesn't mean I'm itching to do it.  And save the theoretical move for KG, the only way the Lakers were "one player away" was through adding a high-quality player to the mix, not swapping talent.  If the Lakers pick up a quality player to accompany Kobe and JO, that's perhaps another story.  But I'd hate to see the team dig itself further into a hole so fans know they're "serious about building a winner."  "Serious" and "smart" are two different things.  I prefer the latter.

Does that mean I wanna stand pat?  No.  The front office should aggressively go after any good player on the market and those reportedly untouchable.  But I don't think they should move heaven and earth, no questions asked.  Especially if the primary motive is making Kobe happy, since the odds are low, anyway.  Garnett was the guy he wanted.  That's no longer a possibility.  I don't picture any other moves that'll automatically put a smile on his face.  Except, of course, trading him.  Which, as I've said before, I think the Lakers should seriously consider.  Not because I "want" to trade Kobe.  Nobody really "wants" to trade the league's best player still in his prime.  I'd much rather put a team around him, all things being equal.  But this isn't about what I want.  It's about what I think is best for the Lakers, and sometimes what you want to do and what you should do are two very different things.

If you can't utilize Kobe's abilities to their fullest by building around him, there's no real point to having him here, especially if he's counting down the minutes (perhaps in a vocal and distracting fashion) until he can bolt.  You're simply avoiding the inevitable, and procrastinating could limit whatever returns are possible for Kobe.  Like it or not, the Lakers may be in a position where rebuilding is the unattractive but necessary solution.  If that's the case, you're better off obtaining (and retaining) the most pieces and options to make it happen.  No Laker will fetch more loot than Kobe.  Were I Mitch Kupchak, I'd keep my ear to the ground for possibilities.  But if I'm hearing nothing but silence, I would approach Kobe and lay everything on the table.  If we acquiesce to your wishes, will you widen the list of reportedly acceptable destinations beyond "Chicago" and "Chicago" (although the Bulls could very well be more interested in a Kobe trade these days, now that Boston's a legit three-headed monster)?  As stubborn as he can be and as much as he hates relinquishing control, Kobe might be open to a compromise focused around speeding up his wishes.  Or he might take that stance as a sign of weakness and relish having the Lakers by the short and curlies, aping how Shaq handled his trip out of town.  But if I had to guess, a cooperative olive branch is more likely to help than hurt.  And it may be the best move for the franchise (if a bitter pill for fans to swallow).

In any case, I'd be lying if I said I'm not curious about what comes next.  I'm already exhausted thinking about how many hours I'm gonna be chained to my laptop writing about it.  But curious nonetheless.

Don't break up the Lakers.

1. 3 of 5 starters were injured last year and they still won 42 games. The 4th starter was Smush.

2. LO will be coming into his prime as a basketball player.

3. Bynum is getting older, stronger, and quicker.

4. If you trade them for JO, he'll still have to learn the triangle and they still might not win, which will mean Kobe will opt out anyway.

If #4 is true, who would you rather build around - JO or LO/AB?

If Kobe goes, you've got Lamar, Bynum, Luke, Farmar/Critt, Turiaf and Mo Evans, plus whatever you get for Kobe. The Lakers are young but are building a nucleus for the future. The real question is: can that nucleus come together fast enough for Kobe?

KL,

I'm curious, all these guys that are signing deals with other teams and prompting you to post the "so and so says F-U to Kobe", do you really want them on the team?

And I've yet to see someone that we WOULD ACTUALLY WANT sign elsewhere, for below their market value, because they didn't want to play with Kobe.

I'm not the biggest Kobe fan in the world, I just don't see the point of harping on him because Eddie House signed with Boston.

Mamba,
You are the heart and soul of this blog and the symbol of everything that is righteous about our daily conversation here. I also totally agree with you when you say, "never forget, a little nastiness on the court now and then might be needed." Hopefully the ref scandal will encourage guys like Crawford and Javie to stop inserting themselves all over the game so guys can play hard, as you suggest, without picking up tickie-tackie fouls. Coaches and players have been forced to adjust their game according to the way fouls are called, which varies from night to night, and ref to ref.

LAL_Fan,
There's one way to get around the issue you raise, "Everybody wants to get rid of bad or average player and get a good one. Not going to happened." Dump contracts of players who don't contribute consistently.

C.S.,
"Personally I will be bummed if Cook is still on the roster come November. They dude just doesn’t seem to “get it”. Me, too. Cook would be an example of my comment to LAL_Fan, above. With sincere apologies to turnips and rocks, Cook has the IQ of a turnip and the heart of a rock. I say, dump his contract! Just cut the guy. Yes, it'll cost Buss a few million but it will send a message to the players who remain and clear roster space so we can pick up a free-agent like Posey.

Mamba,
Enough nastiness for you? :)

Laker Seth,

I think the Lakers have at least this entire season with Kobe on as a good soldier, after that it could get a bit ugly. I don't think they trade him for the simple fact that it would be PR suicide for Buss to trade both Shaq and Kobe within 3 years of each other. At this point, you let Kobe hang himself in the public eye by either demanding a trade or worse yet, sitting out. The Lakers hold all the cards right now. If Kobe reaches the point where he is so desperate to leave, you have him waive his no-trade clause so we can get the best deal in return.

And if the front office truly, deep down think Kobe will opt out and leave (I am 100% sure he would not opt out), then they are better off just getting his cap space in return as opposed to bad contracts/marginal players.

Rick Friedman,
"Mamba, Enough nastiness for you? :)

Nasty Rick, Nasty. My God I've created a monster. lol!

Laker Seth:

Good point, well stated. It seems the Lakers have to convince Kobe to "bet long" on the young nucleus developing during his remaining prime.
While this looks unlikely given Kobe's recent tirade, is it substantively worse that his other options?

Assuming they can keep their existing top player, the following teams are a Kobe away from a ring:

DAL
PHX
UTH

Lakers won't make those trades because 1) Kobe will win immediately, shades of Shaq's departure redux, and 2) none of those teams have "parts" that will elevate the remaining Lakers squad any higher. Conversely, we know Kobe won't accept banishment to the perennial dregs of the league, i.e. ATL, CHA, MIN. This means he's probably a Laker at least until his option comes up.

With any luck, the nucleus develops, Kobe stays healthy, and the team gels in that period.

Korey,

I agree. I see no point in a team waiting 3 years to be a championship contender if they have the opportunity to be a championship contender now even if that window is only 3 years. The only reason why the FO takes a wait and see approach is to play it safe and hope that the cards just fall right. For the most part, I agree with that approach. But if you have the opportunity to win now, you have to pursue that path. With the Celts, there window may not be as open when compared to team like the Bulls, but they have a legitimate shot at being a champion. Moreover, true dynasties are rare in this league. Our situation is unique in that we have a player who can win it all right now and a player we have to wait and see. I think the Lakers indecision/inaptness in which direction they want to pursue has screwed up the budget and planning. Remember the 3 year plan where the FO was suppose to clear cap space to land a big time FA? What do we do instead? We extend Kwame's contract, Brian Cook's contract, and waste money on washed up players like Jim Jackson, Vlade, and Mckie. Looking at the FO's track record, I see no reason for anyone to support them. The only novel move I give them credit for is getting Mo Evans for like the 50th draft pick.

Mitchell, that long and totally worthless diatribe on AK... have you been paying attention? Are you undergoing emotional distress of some kind? I'm just trying to figure out what would motivate you to write all of that...based on what? I don't know the Brothers K from a hole in the wall, but from of the stuff they've said here before, sounds like you're full of it. Seriously.

You should think before you write. Or think better.

QUIKWUOR,
"Each season experts downplay how far we will go in the season; they claim we wouldn't even make the
playoffs..but some how we do."

DAAAAMMMMMMMNNNNN!! Big Props Quick. You did your homework. You're up there in the
Tim-4-Show, J.J. Tha_show, MItchell and Gen1 league. Excellent!

I just read Marc Stein's srticle highlighting all the "significant" games during the 2007-08 season. I found it very interesting that the Lakers weren't mentioned very often. From the cancelling of the Shaq-Kobe game on Christmas to not even making a big deal out of Kobe vs. Lebron, you have to wonder how long Dr. Buss will handle not having the Lakers as the team everyone is talking about. In a city like Los Angeles the only thing worst than losing is not being mentioned at all. Having all national eyes turn to Boston right now has to hurt.

Whether Kobe stays or goes or whatever, the Lakers need to do something in the very near future to make themselves relevant in national discussions again. Signing Derek Fisher isn't going to do it.

Mitchell,
"I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS FRONT OFFICE. I'VE HAD IT WITH THESE HATERS. I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS BLOG.
I CAN'T HANDLE ANY MORE OF THIS CRAP! I HOPE EVERYONE REALIZES THIS IS DEFCON FOUR
FOR THE LAKER FRANCHISE. THE FO HAS TWO MONTHS TO RIGHT THE SHIP, OTHERWISE.....I DON'T
EVEN WANT TO GO THERE. "

MITCHELL! STOP THIS, STOP THIS NOW! Come on man, it aint that serious. Well actually it
is, but if you keep this up you're going to run your blood pressure up. So take a deep breath and
repeat after me:
Phil Jackson is my Shepard I shall not want. He maketh me not to lie down on pick and rolls
He leadeth me besides quiet referees He restoreth my Laker Soul and Guides me in the path of Greatness
Yea though I walk through the valley Of the shadow of the Suns I fear no Defeat
For The Mamba is with me His 81 points and slam dunks comfort me Phil prepares a game plan in the
Presence of my opponents He anointeth my head with gatorade My shot flows and flows and flows
Surely Greatness and NBA titles will follow me All the days of my career and I Will dwell in the house
of Staples forever AMEN
Now go get 2 shots of scotch and reread Zombies Chapter 1 to 3.

PHIL JACKSON IS MY SHEPHERD I SHALL NOT WANT

For all you guys proposing various scenarios to get Jermaine ONeal. Doesn't it concern you that the FRANCHISE KILLA wouldn't lift a finger to recruit Kevin Garnett? If the FRANCHISE KILLA wouldn't recruit Garnett, why would he recruit Jermaine ONeal?

July 31, Kevin Garnett says the Kobe situation is STILL up in the air.

WHAT Kobe situation? If Kobe had recruited KG, WHAT "Kobe situation" would Garnett be referring to?

Can you imagine what has probably already happened?

July 23, hey Kobe, this is Jermaine ONeal, I'd like to talk to you about coming to the Lakers.

July 24, hey Kobe, this is Jermaine ONeal, I guess you didn't get my message yesterday, give me a call when you get this.

July 25, hey Kobe, this is Jermaine ONeal, I really need to talk to you, I called your agent and he said this was the correct # to call, please, please, please give me a call

July 26, hey Kobe, this is Jermaine ONeal, I'm running out of time here and your agent assures me this is the right # to call, please, please call me, I'd love to team up with you

July 27, hey Kobe, this is Jermaine ONeal, I don't know what else to do but leave this final message. If you are interested in playing with me, please, please do call me at ###

July 28, no call

July 29, no call

July 30, KG rumors flying

July 31, KG says he ruled out LA because the Kobe situation is still up in the air

July 31, Jermaine ONeal nods his head as his listens to the Boston Celtic news conference, KG saying he ruled out LA because the Kobe situation is still up in the air, Jermaine ONeal, "mmmmm hhhhmmmmm"

someone please help me out here, is there anyway we can get JO without giving up LO?

MK is going to trade Kobe to the sonics and he will find a way not to get kevin in the deal. KD and KB will go on to win multi champs all while kobe gives a big fat FU to the lakers and Ray Allen all at the same time.

Ice cube better rewrite the "It was a good day" lyrics if that happens.....

Bob,

Well Bob, We would have to give up alot of yung talent and a large contract of sorts to make it work. Maybe a Bynum,JCrit, Brown, Vlad Rad deal gets it done salary wise. Thats close to the KG, Celtic deal, 4 bodies for 1. Thas about the only way i see it happening. Or if they want someone else to replace Vlad Rad, like Evans or soemthing. At that point, they would want Brown's expiring contract. They would have youth in Bynum And Jcrit or Farmar. I would prefer to give them Farmar, but they will want Crit if were not giving up Odom. And Vlad Rad is the outside shooter that coach Obrien wants. Remember, every Gm wants to feel at theend of a deal that they got teh better of the deal.

Bob,

I forgot to include that fact that would probably have to also give up a 1st round pick next year along with Bynum/Brown/Jcrit or Farmar/Vlad Rad or Evans

Just a note to the Brothers K - we need a new thread badly. Are you trying to set a new record for posts? It's getting awfully hard to keep track of conversations in here.

Jorema - so which team would you be backing when they played each other?

tripgame

I'm willing to live with that deal if we can keep LO. Not sure if famar or Crit should go. I would say Crit at this point only because I have only seen him play one game and it was the one bad game he had in summer play. At this point I wouldn't deal any of them because I just don't know who is better. Any way they would take Sasha instead (sorry faith)? I won't miss vlad, cook, bynum or brown, not because I don't think they have game but I just don't think they have enough heart to be lakers. If MK can make that deal happen I will once again have faith.

Faith

I see the smush to heat deal finally happened, Now he can say all the F the lakers he wants with Shaq.

Bob,

the only reason why I say JCrit or Farmar is b/c Tinsley's days are numbered. And if I had to choose between the 2, i would want JCrit over Farmar. Im sure they will see it the same way and also want J Crit. They will not take Sasha unless its just a throw in to make it 5 bodies or in exchange for that 1st round pick. Were just gonna have to bite the bullet on Sasha being a 1st round pick and let him go after this unless we can trade him for a 2nd round pick next year. Its not about what were willing to give up, its about what they would want. I say they will want Bynum, Brown, Vlad Rad/ J Crit and a 1st rounder for JO.

andrew Z

"I'm curious, all these guys that are signing deals with other teams and prompting you to post the "so and so says F-U to Kobe", do you really want them on the team?"

to be honest, it's a joke. my point is that kobe's bad reputation turns off potential free agents from coming to LA which is a contributing factor to why we suck.

wow,

"You need to come your hatred for Kobe down and take a chill pill."

first off, i'm glad that you're occasionally back.

you know some of the stuff is a joke right? i've always said that i don't hate kobe personally because i don't know him. with respect to kobe as a b-ball player and a professional, i do distain his approach to the game and to the business of b-ball. fair?

Rocky-

I actually don't mind mortgaging the future. In general, I'm an advocate of taking the known over the unknown (which is why I've always been willing to trade Bynum if a good deal came along). KG would have been a great example. I'd have traded anyone on the roster not named Kobe. But you do have to be careful not to give away the farm for the wrong guy. If you mortgage the future unwisely, not only does the present suffer, but so does that future.

In the Lakers case, bold action is not necessarily a bad thing. It's not like they're sitting where the Bulls were a couple years ago, where you knew if they played it right they could be a very good team for a long time. There's nothing about the Lakers that screams "Finals in '10-'11." If a good move is out there, go for it. But they can really screw things up if they make a bad one. You have to take risks, but they have to make trades that they believe make them better or build to it. PR moves, whether for fans or Kobe, are a horrible idea.

hobbit

first off, good points.

"What about LBJ makes you go WOW?"

LBJ has done a good job brining the Cavs back to respectability. The last time i remember the Cavs being relevant was when they had Nance, Hot Rod, Craig Elho and Mark Price. So LBJ's "wow" factor is that he has made the Cavs relevant again in the Leastern Conference.

Face reality folks. Mitch (George Bush Jr.) Kupchak, failed to upgrade his sorry roster, Fisher, Critter and karl don't cut it. Therefore Kobe still wants to be traded.

Problem ! Nobody wants him, or at least not any contender, the reason being, why blow-up a good or great roster ie. Chicago to get a cancer like Kobe.

While he may be the best player in the league, he is still a whining, selfish, cancer therefore he will not get traded, he will spend the season pointing fingers, scaring and or belittling his team mates and the team will suck. They sucked and were in a slide when last season ended, you can expect that slide to continue when the new season begins.

lakerblake

"We have the best offensive machine in the league. Our offense will be fine and no KOBE won't have to jack up 35 FGA's."

30 FGA a night should be enought to win the scoring title.

lal_fan

"I agree with AK. Lakers just did not have pieces to outbid Boston. "

not to mention kobe's an a$$hole.

kobe apologist

"If only Kobe was as lucky as Michael Jordan, his circumstances might be different."

isn't the reason we're in this mess is due to kobe's desire to be "like mike"? if kobe was in jordans position, the Bulls would never win a championship and kobe would be riding the pine with the spurs club like Dominic Wilkins did towards the end of his career.

Kobeyashi

"Sad when your team does not have a single player that other teams desire or want to trade for."

agreed....Dallas, Pheonix and Chicago are "idiots" and "incompetent" for not trading for kobe "right now". Those GMs are acting "childish" and are "jealous" of the Big Cancer.

lalakerlover

"Aa far as KL goes...those posts should be limited soon as summer comes to an end and KL will have to focus on school as 5th grade will be starting up again !"

haha, i've heard the 5th grade insult 263 times from multiple bloggers. Personally, i like the "haterade" insult from my friend Fan of the Mamba. Much props Fan.

Thanks for the shout out in roll call Mamba!

KL,
"isn't the reason we're in this mess is due to kobe's desire to be "like mike"

There you go again. Ignore all the facts, and just make up reasons for why Kobe is to blame.

The reason why the Lakers are "in this mess" is because Shaq never developed his game and allowed himself to get out-of-shape. Then he compounded the problem by publicly embarrassing the ownership and demanding an unreasonable amount of money. Kobe had no control over any of that, and was not to blame for any of that. Had Shaq not done the first two, the team had a very good chance of winning five straight; at the very least being very competitive, with being the prime contender for the next several titles. None of that can be put on Kobe's shoulders.

Your irrational feelings toward Kobe have put you in Mike T company, with his irrational feelings for Kwame.

Big time Lakers fan here, since the Gail Goodrich/Happy Hairston days (okay, Jerry West/ Wilt Chamberlain). So how does this sound? Kobe Bryant to the Chicago Bulls (with Brian Cook) for Luol Deng, Chris Duhon, Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah, then trade Noah to the Milwaukee Bucks (with a first round draft pick if you have to) for Yi Jianlian. I’m telling you, Lakers fans, you would fall in love with this team: Bynum (7-0 285) backed up by Yi (6-11 240) at center with Mihm (7-0 265) helping out; Odom (6-10 230) and Deng (6-9 220) flanking Duhon (6-1 185) with Radmanovic (6-10 235) at the four spot; Walton (6-8 235) as the sixth man with Fisher helping him quarterback the second team, which features Yi and includes SF Tyrus Thomas (6-9 215) and SG Javaris Crittenton (yes, Javaris Crittenton). The last two roster spots go to Ronny Turiaf (6-10 250) and Jordan Farmar (6-2 180). Kwame Brown (6-11 270), SF Maurice Evans (6-5 220) and SG Sasha Vujacic (6-7 200) spend most of the season (or at least the beginning of it in Brown’s injury-prone case) on the injured list.

dear i want to talk wid u if dont mind send me ur email adress
