Rumors and housekeeping

July 29, 2007 | 11:41 pm

The good news is that Kevin Garnett is rumored once again to be on the move.  The bad news?  The rumors don't put him in L.A.  Instead, Boston looks like the destination du jour, with Danny Ainge's draft-day acquisition of Ray Allen having apparently made Beantown seem more palatable to The Big Ticket.  At least he'll be out of the conference.

Also, on the housekeeping end, we'll be in Seattle on Monday.  HQ will know, so hopefully everything goes smoothly.

"Let's just face it, Kobe ain't no Jordan."

More importantly, Kobe can't win, not in the regular season, not in the playoffs.

The biggest mistake of kobe's life (with respect to b-ball) is thinking kobe was better off without shaq. If shaq was still here, kobe would be the unquestioned #1 on the team and [emphasis on "and"] still be competing for championships.

Guys like AI, Grant Hill and Eddie Jones would happily join the Lakers for a run at the title (AI would be harder due to cap issues). instead, kobe's acting like a little girl blaming everyone but himself for his mess.

Lesson learned: "Be careful for what you ask for".

Hey everybody...

I've got to admit that this has been the worst day in a very long time for me...all I heard around the office today was "KG's coming to the Celtics". I feel sick to my stomach.

KG coming to Boston is the dumbest move for Garnett. I swear if I see him around here, I'm gonna throw a damn lobster at his head. WHAT THE HELL IS HE THINKING?

I still won't be buying tickets to go see the Celtics. I'm just sick over this.

Laker Front Office Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

"It's time to revolt Laker fans! Stand up for what you know. This Laker team is not built to compete with the big boys. Spurs, Rockets, Mavericks, Suns, Miami. And once they get KG the Celtics are back in the game and way ahead of the Lakers. The fans must hold the Lakers front office by closing thier wallets. Just like Buss has."

I'm with you 100%

there goes the kg dream...

HTJ

that very well may be true, but seriously, nobody was comparing Kobe to MJ on this thread. . so. . seems kinda pointless unless you're trying to get a rise out of Kobe fans

haha how bout them celtics eh

lakers sign coby karl!

HTJ,

Leave Kobe alone..and you go kiss MJ's ass.

On the day Boston gets KG, we get KC... nice timing, Mitch.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/news/070730_signkarl.html

okay, so it's CK and not KC... maybe if his name was worth remembering... don't we already have a guy with Karl's game by the name of Luke?

The main difference between Kobe and Michael Jordan is circumstance. Given the same conditions that MJ had, Kobe would have the same or better results. Too bad we'll never see it happen, unless one of you has a time machine with a flux capacitor.

HTJ:

"Pip was good, don't get me wrong, but not anything special for the most part."

Wasn't Scottie Pippen an All-Star in 93-94 and 94-95, while MJ was busy playing baseball? Didn't he lead the Bulls to a 55-27 record in 93-94? Didn't he help the Blazers get to within one quarter of the Finals in 2000? He's not one of the NBA's 50 greatest players for nothing.

Lamar Odom, on the other hand, was on zero all-star teams before joining the Lakers and has been on zero all-star teams since joining the Lakers.

No man can win it all by himself. Jordan didn't, and neither can Kobe.

KG 2 LA!

--FearlessWhackJob

HTJ:

Oh, and Pippen is #4 on the NBA all-time steals list. Unlike Lamar, he knew how to play good D. Don't underestimate his contribution to the Bulls.

angry,

"Please no insults, if that is possible, just trying to have a discussion with a fellow lakers fan!!!"

i actually find you to be one of the more likable bloggers. please don't get offended with my "F-U" joke. all i'm saying is that kobe turned off a lot of guys (fans, NBA players and GMs) which is now biting him in the a$$. Of course KG's not saying "F-U" literally to kobe (perhaps figuratively), but the implication is that kobe can go "F" himself.

You see, kobe basically told shaq to go "F" himself with the snippy comments in 2003 and 2004 and now kobe's getting what he deserves for all of thoese times kobe was a jerk to shaq. I remember KG once said that (paraphrase) "if you have a problem with shaq, then somethings wrong with you".

Aloha Angry Laker

K.l is not going to do any research. Like he says to me, he isnt really into details or facts. Thats kind of scary, considering he is in the financial industry. Hope he isn't involved with my portfolio. LOL

kobe apologist

"Smush Parkers say "F-U" to Heat by signing with Heat."

you may be right my friend. either Smush will have a banner year or Wade, Shaq and the Miami Heats are toasted. i can't see any middle ground. I don't think there's a lot of faith with the Miami club right now. Case in point:

*Blake to Miami "F-U"
*Mo Williams to Miami "F-U"
*Francis to MIami "F-U"

Well said Mr. Voice of Reason (Edwin Gueco).

Although i do take exception with the quote below:

"It took years for Mikan, Chamberlain, West, Baylor, Goodrich, Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Shaq and Kobe built it up, it all get into shambles under the mismanagement of Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak and Phil Jackson while the fading, old but still reliable owner slept with his girlfriends."

i won't get into which part i take exception, but i'm sure it is obvious.

Hear that? The silence is deafening. This is the big move, the big day we've all looked forward to. THe KG move. Today's the day and we can't even get a post through. There's a poetic irony in that.

Sounds like Lakers have signed their 15th player -

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2955180

Time for a reality check. Remember when Mitch told us 'happy days are here again', what was he talking about? Had he just taken his prozac?

Maybe he meant happy days for Celtic fans? Just watch, McHale will get fired or 'resign' fairly soon. Then he will take a position with the Celtics. Sell your Timberwolve stock now!

Maybe the Lakers could have a prozac promotion. All fans that come to Staples get a free sample so they can feel as good as Mitch does. WHAT SAY YOU?

Lakers sign Karl months after bout with cancer

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2955180

Funny, no mention of kobe bryant welcoming Coby Karl to the team. In all seriousness, i'm glad that Karl has made a full recovery.

korey

"At this point, i kinda hope KG goes to the Celtics...The Timberwolves would then be crap for years to come..."

i smell a hater amonst us. Boston is officially back.

"There are few players in the NBA I'd trade Lamar for at this time:

Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudamire, Michael Redd, LeBron, Dwayne, Carmelo, Yao, T-mac." David W.

Can this guy really believe what he is saying?
Lamar is a underachiever and so-so player who will show up one day and next day will take the day of with fouls and questionable decision making. Apart from that he is y injured each season.

Lamar is a awful outside shooting guy. He can rebound but most of those rebounds are just defensive rebound that he got them because Kwame and Bynum are lazy.

If Lakers persists in overestimate Lamar and Bynum value, Lakers' route to oblivion is coming sooner than later

rdlee:

"If this KG to Boston trades goes down, I won't be one of the Lakers fans that will be crying. Why?
1) His salary is going to kill any team that gets him. If he gets an extension anywhere near what he makes now, whoever gets him will be strapped for the duration."

That's one way of reading it. Another way of reading it is that he has an expiring contract. Whoever gets him can try him out for a year, and if things don't work out, hey can let him go and free up some cap space. If it does work out, then they will pay him what he deserves to be paid and reap the rewards on the basketball court. Besides, if things do work out, then the tremendous increase in fan support will offset the cost of the luxury tax.

rdlee:

"2) Giving up LO, Kwame, Bynum and Farmar is too much. Who's going to play center? Mihm? Turief?"

What's wrong with that? Didn't Mihm play center most of the time in 2005-06? We don't need a dominant scorer at every position, and having both Mihm and Garnett on the floor will make for an imposing frontcourt defense. Plus, I bet we'll see more of an improvement from Turiaf next season than we will from Bynum or Kwame. He has the one thing they're missing: DESIRE.

"3) KG is not the dominating low post go-to scorer we need. He loves the turn around mid-range jumper. He doesn't muscle anyone down low."

I have to admit that we'd be better off with a more "dominating" low-post presence, but KG can still finish underneath the basket as good as anyone in the league.

"4) When has KG ever led his team to anything? Sam Cassell was the leader in the only time the Wolves did anything. KG is a more consistent Odom, not a Duncan, Dwight Howard or Webber (in his prime)."

Wow, you're putting Dwight Howard above KG? KG isn't an 10-time allstar by accident. And just like Kobe, or any great player, he can't do it alone. There was only one season in which he was truly surrounded by talent, and that team met up with the "Dream Team" Lakers in the 2004 WCF. They didn't really have a chance against four future HOF'ers.

That being said, it doesn't really matter now that he's donning Celtic Green. It looks like Boston and LA are switching places on the totem pole, and now Celtic fans will finally have something to cheer about. Damn Celtics...

I don't see a reason to complain.
Time for everyone to cut Kupchak some slack.
There's definitely nothing Kupchak or Buss could have done. I guarantee the Lakers had an offer on the table. It just wasn't as promising as Boston's offer. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Minnesota found a great partner for a KG trade. They get youth. They get expiring contracts. They are set and ready to rebuild.
The Lakers on the other hand need to stay focused. The KG thing didn't happen. Time to keep moving forward... moving power forward Cook, to be precise. This team still needs some athleticism/defense at the 3. Cook has a poor attitude and shouldn't get any PT in our rotation. He could however help other teams in need of shooting.
The Front Office needs to set their sights on an Artest or Posey or Jarvis Hayes or Ruben Patterson (in that order, if at all possible). This Laker team isn't too far out of contention. Just a little more talent, and lot more team play and this team will be OK.

KG has made it official.

KG to Kobe "Big F-U"

What happened to kobe being the best player in the league, in the planet, in the galaxy?

You see, once kobe was a jerkoff to shaq in 2003, then in 2004 and to boot held management's nuts until shaq was traded, i knew the lakers as i knew it was crumble into a circus show. Sideshow Kob.

Three years post-shaq and we have only our backup PG to show for it. I know kobe apologist (not Kobe Apologist himself who i've come to respect) will blame everyone but kobe bryant himself.

KOBE HAS ONLY HIMSELF TO BLAME FOR PUTTING HIS indivudual LEGACY ABOVE THE TEAM AND NOW KOBE ONLY GARNERS SUPERFICIAL RESPECT FROM HIS PEERS BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYING ALONSIDE A SELFISH, JERKOFF KOBE FUDGE-GET-ABOUT-IT.

Capice? Entiendo? Understand?

What say you kobe loyalist?

Guess what... the Lakers have made some big news...

THE LAKERS HAVE SIGNED COBY KARL!

The Celtics get KG, and the Lakers get Coby Karl... Take that, Celtics!

I am not going to cry about KG. It would have been nice but I do not think he would have made us serious contenders, at least this year. He would have been an upgrade at the 4 but Lamar was our 2nd best player and it wasn't the spot(s) we needed to upgrade. I felt at the end of the year that we needed to upgrade the 1 and 3 plus add a vet to the bench. So far all we have done is upgrade the 1 but is fish enough? Considering everything we would have given up for KG, would we have been that much better without our glaring needs still unresolved?

MH

KL isn't a Laker fan.
He is a Shaq fan, period.

His favorite players is Luke Walton, a bench guy who career had being saved for playing alongside Kobe.

Let's him have his collection of diatribe, his "one-million-times-paste-of-the same-message-posts". His purpose is just projects himself, gain personal attention.

Sure, he is enjoying himself and he doesn't care about logic, facts, true or lies.

But at the end, he come across as a very ingenuous guy that is taking himself so seriously that already believe his laughable lies and his own "kool-aid" futilities.

Charles,

I'm a big fan of putting Mihm at the 4, moving Lamar to the 3 and having Kwame and Bynum splitting minutes at the 5, at least on offense. Lamar's only big fault as a defender is his inability to really stop bigger PF's in the post. Moving him over to the 3 spot would solve that problem. He seems to be pretty effective defending smaller players, and his offensive game is more tailored to playing at the 3.

Mihm has a nice 15 footer, and his overall offensive game is better than most seem to realize. You have to give Mihm credit for his offense and rebounding. He's good at both. Playing him alongside Kwame/Bynum would relieve him of the tough responsibility of clogging the middle. With Kwame or Bynum guarding the primary post presence and the lane, Mihm's defensive weaknesses wouldn't be as much of an issue.

A big front line of Lamar, Mihm, and Kwame/Bynum sounds pretty good. And when you think about it, both Kwame and Bynum are solid centers in today's league.

With Fish and Kobe holding down the back court, this could be a pretty formidable team. Vlad Rad could back up both forward spots, and Turiaf could play the 4 and 5 depending on the situation. Walton could play at the 2 and 3 spots off the bench. Mo Evans will be Kobe's primary backup. This sort of leaves Cook as the odd man out.

The point guard situation looks to be interesting. Fish is good for some minutes, and it'll be up to Farmar and Critt to determine how the rest of the minutes are alotted.

At the risk of being too optimistic, I think this team looks very good. If Bynum can improve, Lamar can find his rhythm, and we can avoid too many injuries, I think this team can make something happen. All if's, but still.

Jon K,
I have had 4 posts never show up from the last two days. It has also happened occasionally in the past.

KLBeast

"I guess kobe is still having a problems with accepting "no". "No" means "no" and "no" never means "yes" or "maybe"......you'd think after 2004................nah, ain't going to go there."

LMAO, I TIP MY HEAD OFF TO YOU SIR
ONE "WOULD" THINK KOBE KNOW THAT NO MEANS NO AFTER EAGLE ROCK BUT I AM MORE AND MORE CONVINCED THAT KOBE HAS NEVER IN HIS LIFETIME UNDERSTOOD OR GRASPED THE IDEA OF "NO". IT HAS NO MEANING TO HIM, LOL

Here's a link to a funny Kobe Trade video on youtube!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMkCFszK29o

Glen Taylor postponing his honeymoon to personally handle the move of KG to the Lakers, what a big LIE! The word "Lakers" came from Minnessota that describes a state of a thousand lakes. It was bought by Jack Kent Cooke and move to Los Angeles in 1960.

Well, 47 laters, Glen knows the Lakers need of KG. It has something to do of saving the franchise and save its remaining reputation. I believe LO, Bynum, Kwame would be a better deal than what they got today. Unfortunately, Nobody care about the Lakers wants or needs, not even the root state, it's all business.

So Jerry Buss, Glenn made the best sting on you, it's on your face! Delayed honeymoon argh!

Lastly, Fatty you're a failure there in GetGarnett.com, time to come home. You didn't deliver the much need bacon and chili.

fakerz:

"I knew this day was coming whenever Kobe talked to KG on the phone - There was no way KG was coming to LA b/c, I believe, Kobe told KG he was gone so there was no reason to come to LA."

Let's not jump to conclusions. I thought the same thing a few weeks ago, but since then both Kobe and KG have said that they never talked to each other on the phone. Are you saying they're both liars? Even so, I would've liked to see Kobe call KG and tell him to get his ass over to LA... but if Kobe has no faith in the FO, why should he tell KG to trust them?

mamba 24/10:

"Mitch has a surprise or two in store
for all us Laker Fans"

Yes, Mitch does have a surprise, and his name is Coby Karl. Big F'ing surprise...

lakefaze:

"Bynum this is your year, step up give us something to say "we were wrong about you kid" otherwise... its going to be just another year of being a die hard Laker fan."

--With emphasis on "die hard".

Come to think of it, it's not only the Lakers that's crying over the spilled milk. Look what Golden State did, they move Jason Richardson to allow more cap space, now they regress with the outcome. The Suns were expecting to move Stoudemire or Marion plus the contracts of Kurt Thomas, Banks etc. they too were taken for the ride but they were not really in hot pursuit of KG. Even Cuban was hoping to land KG in Dallas. All these teams were slapped in the face by freaking air head, Danny Ainge, the most hated Celtic of all times, even when he was on TNT, there is always a heated exchange between Magic and Danny, he must laughing today from head to foot on the Lakers while Mchale gives you that innocent grin, "I'm only a GM here."

If anyone is wandering why Kobe will be leaving (not why he's talking about leaving), despite his going public and expressing his displeasure with the direction of the team, in regards to talent aquisitions, look at the signings since. I have been a Laker fan since 1969, and I cannot believe what has become of our francise. To have the signings of D. Fish, and Koby Carl as the major aquisitions since his going public, while the Celtics sign Ray Allen and now K.G., shows you why Kobe did what he did. This francise has no intentions of spending any money and going after another impact player, as long as the have the NBA's BEST player, and the NBA's highest ticket prices in their favor. If you were Kobe, and you REALLY wanted to win, what would you do?

bd:

"If not, I am ready to go with the new Showtime team, the KIDS.. I happen to think both 19 year olds are going to be special... I am really surprised by some of the post on Bynum.. Yes it was all down hill for him last year, but you can't tell me you didn't see the SKILLS..."

SKILLS ARE NOTHING WITHOUT DESIRE.... Damn, I'm getting so angry I'm starting to turn into "all-caps" Gunner!

Tripgame is on board.

Thank you

The move Andrew Bynum movement is in motion.

1. Guys, all I'm saying is that I believe and we have all seen Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum get "STAGE FRIGHT" when the biggest stage and most shiny star shines on them. So what do we have, Kobe standing alone without a MAN with an EGO remotely close to KOBE's.

2. Jermaine O'Neal thinks he is the MAN. We need guys who feel that way about themselves.

3. JO makes more sense now because we add him to D-Fish and Luke Walton to support KOBE where as before it was just Luke Walton.

4. I think everybody can agree that if we see the script play out again like last yr, we're going to FLIP.

It's just time to WIN, time to gain some respect back. We need to go at San Antonio, Dallas, and Phoenix. Those teams used to fear us!

"Health alone with better passion and heart will make us damn near elite.
Lets play some D and not worry about the offense."

Jandero when you have the likes of Cookie, Sasha, Luke, Vrad, Farmar, Bynum , Mimm and even Kwame Brown (his not that great of a defender as most of you claim). Who out of all these players thinks defense.. NO ONE
THAT'S NO ONE, this is the Lakers problem no defensive mided players, this team is a joke, and now they've added another guy name Coby Carl.... I can't take this no more... The Lakers got to be the softess team in the NBA, hands down....

I'm beggining to hate this team outside of Koby and a little bit of ODOM

sonnybelfast:

"In 2002, the Sacramento Kings were the consensus best team in the NBA, who in spite of getting shafted by the refs throughout the WCF, won a few games anyway.

This sentiment is well known, documented, and league-wide from both a fan and pundit perspective. I wouldn't expect most brokebackers to admit anything. It would be so far out of character for you, and it really doesn't matter now, does it?

You've got the asterisk, em, er, trophy."

Maybe I'd believe you if you weren't a Kings fan... you're not completely biased, are you?

BJ man 69,

In 2002, the Sacramento Kings were the consensus best team in the NBA, who in spite of getting shafted by the refs throughout the WCF, won a few games anyway.

This sentiment is well known, documented, and league-wide from both a fan and pundit perspective. I wouldn't expect most brokebackers to admit anything. It would be so far out of character for you, and it really doesn't matter now, does it?

You've got the asterisk, em, er, trophy.

Sonnybelfast

Sonnyblowfast (& faster)- No, we have the trophy, you have the asterisk. BTW, what's the prize for being "the consensus best team in the NBA"? Is it even better than a parade, a banner and a trophy? Is it given from a fan and pundit perspective? Too bad for you it's not college football.

Evidently, this still matters to you. You began this thing by posting some whining little editorial from your high school newspaper sort of (but not really) claiming that the 2002 WCF was fixed. You cowtippers don't even have the guts to come out and say it was fixed, because you know it wasn't.

How come you never talk about how you cowtippers blew a 24-point lead in Game 4? How come you never acknowledge that Game 5 was as rigged as you claim Game 6 was. I don't know if the better team won, but the tougher team definitely won. Not that it matters to you (Ha, ha).

I hope Coby Karl's contract is not guaranteed. If so say bye bye to James Posey, Mikeal Pietrus, Ruben Patterson, or Eddie Jones.

Karl seems like another SASHA.

Seems like an overeaction to a RED HOT nba summer league shooter but maybe it's something I don't see.

Maybe they'll cut SASHA now.

LAKERS SIGN COBY KARL

GREAT.. Another great move my CUP CAKE.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/news/070730_signkarl.html

Fakerz

Try and stay within the reality of the situation. Kobe has a no trade clause. He listed 3 teams that he would go to.

The bulls have already stated that they will not tear up their team for Kobe or KG

The suns have said they will not tear up their team for Kobe or Kg. As a matter of fact they are selling draft picks and giving guys away to stay under the luxary cap.

And the Knicks? Come on, they have garbage. They no longer have young pieces to deal or high draft picks or expiring contracts. And curry is off limits.

So where do you trade him? Its easier said then done.

MH
