Free (agent) samples

July 27, 2007 |  2:40 pm

We could use a new thread anyway, so check out cbssportline.com's list of the 20 best free agents still available.  Anyone of interest to y'all and more importantly, do you think the Lakers can actually get this cat... and how?  In most cases, "how" would be the more pressing question over "who."

By the way, I've got it on good authority that whichever team signs the 18th ranked guy, if they're not willing to pay the cost of shipping his wheels, deal's off.

And wouldn't you know it, five minutes after I put this post through, the Heat agree to all terms involved with bringing the Smushcalade to Miami.  The driver, too.  Congrats to Smush.

I think we still have about a mil left from the MLE (big bucks lol) and the vet minimum. Unfortunately I don't think they can be combined. Still there's the sign and trade aspect lol.

Get C-Webb or James Posey down here!

pretty funny (unless your the commish)

Gunner24 - The Steven A. Smith Award: Sure, he may not make sense all the time, but it's hilarious to watch.

I'LL TAKE THAT AWARD ANYDAY. ONLY PROBLEM STEVEN HAS SHOWN HE'S A PART OF KOBIATCH ENTOURAGE. DEFINITELY NOT ONE OF HIS STRONG SUIT.

GINO OR GINA
This is the reason why this will be my last post at this blog... When every I tune in, the only thing I see is KLbeast and gunner's stupid comments...

ADIOS..AMIGOS!!!

Taliq
You are a small minority, you do not speak for laker fans cuz everytime i tune in to watch the lakers play at home staples center is always overflowing with love for kobe

You've been seduced by the "razzle dazzle" as KL would say.

Angry_Laker,

YOU ARE YOU GOING TO PUT DUMB STEALS AND BLOCK STATS UP TO COMPARE KOBE AND SHAQ IN THE 2004 FINALS. WHY NO SHOT ATTEMPTS AND SHOOTING PERCENTAGE?

Game 1 Detroit 30 FTA Shaq ( 1 blk 0 stl ) Kobe ( 2 blk 4 stl)
Game 2 Detroit 31 FTA Shaq ( 1 blk 1 stl ) Kobe ( 2 blk 0 stl)
Game 3 Detroit 30 FTA Shaq ( 0 blk 1stl ) Kobe ( 1 blk 1stl)
Game 4 Detroit 41 FTA Shaq ( 1 blk 0 stl ) Kobe ( 0 blk 1stl)
Game 5 Detroit 39 FTA Shaq ( 0 blk 1 stl ) Kobe ( 0 blk 1 stl)
total 171 FTA Shaq ( 3 blk 3 stl ) Kobe ( 5 blk 7 stl)

THIS IS GOT TO BE THE DUMBEST COMPARISON SOMEONE WOULD PUT UP. TELL ME ALOT ABOUT YOU. SHAQ AND KOBE BLOCKS AND STEAL? AND TRY TO SAY KOBE OUTDUELS SHAQ?

DO ME A FAVOR AND PUT UP KOBE SHOT ATTEMPTS AND SHAQ. I'LL GIVE YOU KOBE.

Game 1: Kobe 10-27 (37%)
Game 2: Kobe 14-27 (52%)
Game 3: Kobe 4-13 (31%)
Game 4: Kobe 8-25 (32%)
Game 5: Kobe 7-21 (33%)

NOW YOU GIVE ME SHAQ. IT'S FUNNY HOW AFTER YOU WENT CRYING TO AK, YOU NEVER MADE ANOTHER COMMENT DIRECTLY TO ME AGAIN. TELL ME ALOT ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER. SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER CRYBABY MEMBER OF THIS BLOG WHO RUNS OFF AFTER POSTING A PETITION ON THIS BLOG.

Smush in Miami? I'm curious to see how that experiment works out.

tellitlikeitis:

"did you see the Kevin Heanch read in Fox Sports? He's reads your stuff."

Yeah, I just read it... There's some pretty funny stuff in there... but I'll still have to sue him for stealing my idea...

Damn we lost out on Smush. Damn man. I'm so pissed. I'm talking sarcastically.

James Posey is a person we need. No secret SF position is our weakest spot now. I don't trust Luke as a starter and Vlad is suspect and I would use him to be involve a possible trade midseason trade if we have to.

Face it, Posey can shoot well from the outside as the one thing he can do better than Luke and Vlad is play some defense. I mentioned his name right before the draft and it's amazing he is still out there. I think he would excel in the triangle. It fits his game.

From the Smush Parker article:

"Parker helped guide the Los Angeles Lakers to the playoffs..."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.... Someone call the coroner, I think I'm about to die laughing...

Violater,

You can do worse than smush. He definately brought a lot to the table compared with a lot of other folks on our roster, I think the problem really is that he was a starting for us when he should have been coming off the bench for us. The other problem is last year he had a bad attitude but can't say I blame him. Dude is only human and when you see guys that aren't contributing as much to the team earn way more than you (sasha, shammond, mckie) it'll definately get to you. He felt he'd busted his butt the prior season and he just couldn't understand why others were rewarded but he wasn't.

He's got one of the sweetest tomahawk dunks when he's on a fast break and he of course was part of the game we won against phoenix in 06 playoffs when he hit a big 3 and came up with a steal on nash, too bad we didn't win the series cuz that game would have gone down as one of the greatest laker playoff games ( instead it's just a bitter sweet memory ).

I wish the dude the very best and hope he finds success in miami.

The heat are now smoking the Kush. Smush? LMAO.

My choices would be sign Posey (1st option) then C-Webb (2nd option.) Posey can play the 2-3 and can defend better than Walton. (Though Luke has Traingle experience and I would have him off the bench.)

C-Webb is a distant 2nd. If he can play off the bench and be our Center for passing and perimeter shooting. Otherwise, he can waste his time too with the the 2 D's.

Chris Webber?

This is where old Kobiatch could get on the phone and for once in the last 3 years talk to Chris about possibly coming to LA. Apparently he was interested last season. Lakers was second on his list behind Detroit.

He doesn't have to start. But he adds insurance to the team if they are hit with injuries during the season. And a great passer. Definitely would excel in the triangle.

Even if Phil brought him off the bench, when he comes in, you can slide Lamar to the 3 spot and you have a solid defensive frontline.

KOBIATCH GET ON THE PHONE AND TALK TO SOMEONE FOR A CHANGE!

How much you wanna bet that Smush commits a Flagrant 1 on Kobe when the Lakers & Heat play each other?

The more I think about it, the more that sounds like a SUCKER'S BET to me!

Michael Pietris is an interesting free agent. I'd have liked to have picked him up for one of our SFs. While he's not known for his defense, he's got the speed and the ability to drive to the paint and draw fouls.

I'm not any good at deals...but maybe Cookie to the Warriors for Pietrus? Nah lol.

Talk about spin!

Remember this- "the Lakers where put in this earth to make the Steve Blakes look good" ? Substitute Heat for Lakers now.

Taoshum:

You and I both know that none of the Lakers championships were won by "rebuilding". They were won by doing whatever it takes to get the best players in the league... Kareem... Wilt... Shaq... And I don't care how inept other franchises are. We're not Clipper fans, or Hawk fans or Hornet fans. WE'RE LAKER FANS, and Laker fans should not accept mediocrity at any level.

Violater,

The piece was hilarious, but i do object to one part:

"Goodell: Geez, Bud, I wish I could feel for you. But, I mean, c'mon, weren't you the least bit suspicious when 62nd round draft picks started hitting 40 home runs? Or when a former No. 1 overall pick hit 41 and finished 32 home runs behind the leader?

Selig: Huh? I don't follow.

Goodell: 2001. Phil Nevin hit 41. That lab experiment in San Francisco hit 73. You really should get a complimentary Baseball Encyclopedia with your job.
"
It'd have been better if Goodell had suggested that the league should have initially been suspicious when Mark McGwire broke the home run record. As much as I don't care about baseball and couldn't care less than bonds, I can't help but wonder if his skin color is the reason why he's the villian everyone was brave enough to call out as opposed to Mark ( I remember when he was going for the record espn and baseball league etc couldn't dish out fairy stories about the dude fast enough ). And he was most definately built like a steriod user.

Violater, That FOX link was hilarious!!!

Smush going to Miami is proof that one man's trash could be another mans dinner. Good Luck smush, hopefully this doesn't come back to be one of Mitch's big mistakes.

note to miami, expect a lot of foul trouble for Zo, haslem, and shaq. ouch. the lakers finally got their revenge on shaq.

oh, and another thing, smush isn't a bad point guard on offense. And he makes clutch steals on defense. But his head, and his defense is what is going to kill the heat.

Hey, does someone have an extra 20 bucks that they don't need? If you do
please send it my way. I sure would like to win this!

You know with all the tension Kobe started about being traded, it's amazing how a little fire under the shorts gets people to start thinking "what have we done lately?" The Lakers have some cap room and should attempt the the best player available. They need atleticism. Point guards are a dime a dozen and they have a couple of good ones. You just have to let them play! They have to take their bumps and bruises like everybody else.
I know Jackson doesn't like to play rookies but in this triangle system you need to let these guys play! Let's face it. We are in a rebuilding mode and the Lakers don't want to admit that because of their pride and winning tradition. Accept it and work with what you have, and try to accqiure a player or two who can bring loyalty and aheart to play in L.A. !

I like Bell and Blatche. Pietrus is not bad either.

Bell would be good for our PG spot once we trade away Farmar and/or Crittenton.
Blatche has gotten Kwame 2 written all over him, but may help in a trade for KG/JO.
Pietrus could help shore up the SF spot, even though he is more of a SG.

Maybe a sign-and-trade with Warriors by giving up Cook? Lord knows Nellie cannot have enough 3-pt specialists who can't play any defense. Heck, he'd be perfect for them!!

On that thought, why not give up Cook/Vlade/MoEvans for Al Harrington and Pietrus? GW gets 2 3 pt. specialists and an expiring contract for a player who doesn't exactly fit in their system - remember how he didn't play all that much in the playoffs?

Oh, what happened to Zarko Cabarkapa? He was a SF with the Warriors last year.

Smush Parker going to Miami, that's a sweet revenge. It can go both ways: in a positive way Smush learn defense from Shaq and he becomes kobe-stopper, that will be known as "the revenge of the scrub" and in the negative way, the Lakers know the giant sucking hole of Miami defense.

At the last sentence of the article, I read:
"On combo guard Juan Carlos Navarro, whose rights are owned by the Washington Wizards, they have shown no interest in accepting a draft pick from the Heat for Navarro."

C'mon, PJ, Jerry Bush, Mitch - why don't we show Sasha + Farmar for Juan Navarro? He is one the best SG in the Euro League." wizzards will accept this deal.

Among the F/A mentioned, I go for C-Webb only. Let's give him the remaining money we've got that is if agrees OR let's go over the threshold of luxury taxes of another $3M. He's like an old JO on the post, we just went up one or two notches if C-Webb is in this team. Of course, he will be used only for 15 minutes during the season and 30 minutes by playoff time to reserve his legs and stamina. The same way with Fisher, let's use more on Farmar and Critt during the season, to save the legs by playoffs time.

Should we not be successful in getting these names, let's invest the remaining one million to our aspiring players Lue and Karl and put them in the D' League? If by December, they are doing great and some of our roster names are messing up, let's give these young tots a chance to prove themselves. Yue is averaging 9 asists while Karl was averaing double digit PPG, I think these guys can play if PJ will change his philosophy of playing rookies instead of scrubs.

Chris

Yes, that was funny. Although, the one that made me fall of my chair was "helped guide the Lakers to the playoffs in each of the last two years as starting point guard" That's like saying "Dave Wennington helped lead the Bulls to the world championship each of the last three years as starting center"

Gotta love "spin" journalism

Smush may do well in Miami. He never seemed to want to play defense though. Riley stresses defense so I'm not sure how that will pan out.

I like Posey, but aren't all 14 roster slots filled? The 15th, I believe, is being left vacant for a good "get" later in the season. AK, BK -- am I right here?

Kobe stoppers Ruben Patterson and Doug Christie in house. We need some defense on the perimeter.

If Anderson Varejao is number one on the list, we might as well scout local parks for talent.........it's KG or bye-bye KB next year.

Kobe stoppers Ruben Patterson and Doug Christie in house. We need some defense on the perimeter.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Good luck, William.

If this dude "turns the corner" in Miami and suddenly realizes how to play team basketball.....wait......nevermind. He's a tall PG that can dunk. Period. Very little ballhandling skills. Horrid defense. William "Reach" Parker...best of luck with Shaq.

I'm honestly happy for Smush. I'm sure he'll enjoy south beach more than Greece. I believe he will be the only player to play alongside Shaq after the Shaq/Kobe split. I wish him the best of luck...but not against us.

In my heart, I hope we can sign Eddie Jones. He is my favorite Laker of all time. I can still remember the last game he played in a Laker uniform; I think it was against the Clippers where he dropped 20.

Chris,

To add further on what you said, some people kept on saying: "we're in rebuilding mode." The last time we won the Championship was 2002, we have been rebuilding for the last five years. lol! However, for the sake of new Laker fans if they are No. 5 in the West, they're extremely happy. No way Jose, it's a waste of precious dough for season ticket holders and club boxes seats holder. Let's put it this way, you're playing in Los Angeles with the Lakers, if you're not No. 1, then you're a FAILURE! This city do not accept failures, look at the Mayor, had a failure in marriage, now suddenly his administration is in the rocks. What happened to the spoiled women in Hollywood: Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and lately, Nicole Richie - they overextended liberalism, well, society gets back to them. That's Los Angeles, under the glitter there is always that challenge when the spotlight is no longer focused on you. Just keep on winning baby or if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

lets bring back smush i love his dunks

Yahoo: "Parker is one of four players with at least 110 steals and 110 3-point field goals in each of the past two seasons. Gilbert Arenas, Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd are the others."

thats a mighty dubious stat there ladies and germz.

good luck to smush. with the luck that we're having these past couple of years, hes gonna have himself a career year.

angry_laker,
"It is a well known fact that team did not play very good team defense and Shaq was main 'Matador' behind it"

SO SHAQ WAS BEHIND THE LOSS? KOBE A$$ MUST SMELL REALLY GOOD TO YOU. I THINK YOU AND SAMIR ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT WAS WATCHING THE SOME OTHER GAME ON ESPN2 BECAUSE YOU DEFINITELY WASN'T WATCHING THE FINALS. OR YOU MAKE THESE COMMENTS SO, YOU SLEEP BETTER AT NIGHT. "I PRAY TO THE MIGHTY KOBE. I LOVE YOU KOBE. I LOVE YOU KOBE. KOBE IS THAT YOU?"

HARI = SAMIR AND ANGRY_KOBE THESE ARE THE ONLY STATS YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT.

OUT OF FORM
Game 1: Kobe 10-27 (37%)
Game 2: Kobe 14-27 (52%)
Game 3: Kobe 4-13 (31%)
Game 4: Kobe 8-25 (32%)
Game 5: Kobe 7-21 (33%)

IN FORM
Game 1: Shaq 13-16 (81%) - AND WE LOSE?
Game 2: Shaq 10-20 (50%)
Game 3: Shaq 7-14 (50%)
Game 4: Shaq 16-21 (76%) - AND WE LOSE?
Game 5: Shaq 7-13 (53%)

NOT ONE GAME DID SHAQ GET MORE ATTEMPTS THAN KOBE. BUT HAD A FAR BETTER SHOOTING PERCENTAGE. AND KOBE'S TOWEL BOY ANGRY_LAKER BLAMES IT ON SHAQ LACK OF DEFENSE.

I GUESS IF SHAQ PLAYED MORE D, KOBE WOULD HAVE RECEIVE MORE SHOT ATTEMPTS AND HAD A CHANCE TO IMPROVE HIS SHOOTING PERCENTAGE MORE AND A CHANCE AT WINNING AT LEAST ONE FINALS MVP. IS THAT YOUR LOGIC?

BUT I GUESS WE HAVE 2 MORE YEARS TO EXPERIENCE THE WATER DOWN KOOLAID COMMENTS UNTIL KOBE IS ADIOS AND YOU TWO ARE PASTED ON THE BACK OF HIS CAR LIKE CANS AT THE END OF A WEDDING CELEBRATION.

It's too bad we can't replace Sasha and Cook with Posey and Pietrus. What an upgrade for our bench.
Can't Kupchek work out something for Cook? The one thing that guy CAN do is shoot. That has to be worth something in the right system.

Clear the decks! Clear some space! Trades ahoy!

Mmmm...more spice for the annual Heat vs Lakers Christmas game. That Shaq vs Kobe rivalry isn't what it used to be.

Hey, good for Smush. Sure, he tanked at the end of each of the last two seasons, but that business about being one of four players with 110 steals and 110 threes each of the last two seasons is no joke. Good company, too, with Gilbert, JKidd, and, uh who? Oh yeah, teammate-ripper Kobe. Wouldn't be surprised to see Smush's 3s go up playing with Shaq. Hey, Shaq can't be any worse for his confidence than #24. Not that he'll get to Kapono numbers, but still.

Of the guys left -- why not make a run at Matt Barnes? Couldn't you see him in a rotation with Luke? Good energy off the bench, fellow Pac 10 guy and Bruin to run with Farmar? You know he'd consider a chance to play in LA.

And why in the heck won't anyone step up and pay Earl Boykins? You know how hard it is for him to find clothes his size? Give that man his money.

If we do any trade for JO or KG where we lose a couple of bigs, then we should definitely sign up Webber.

Also, bringing back Eddie Jones would be great. He could back up Kobe and also play with Kobe moving to the SF position at times.

C-WEBB will help us the most.

Our line would be.

d-fish/farmar/JAVA
kb24/sasha
ODOM/Luke/MO
Turiaf/C-WEBB/COOK
MIHM/Kwame/baynum

that's a mixture of Veteran leadership and youth.

Plus our bench would be a lot deeper than last season.

Go Lakers!

Smush Parker?! That dude doesn't deserve to play in the NBA with his constant sulking, lack of passion, and the belief that he is a top tier point guard. This makes me hate the Miami Heat even more. On the plus side, it will be awesome to see Smush screw up the Heat just like he did with the Lakers.

Since receiving the coveted "Fonzie Award" earlier today, I've been pondering what it really means. So, of course, I turned to Wikipedia for some guidance, and here's what I found:

"Fonzie is a leather jacketed mechanic, and later, part-owner of Arnold's restaurant, who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin sometime in the late 1950s. He is a high school dropout and is seen by the establishment characters in the show as a rebel. He commands tremendous respect throughout much of Milwaukee for his well-deserved reputation for fighting (in one episode, he outduelled an expert fencer; in another, he literally mangled a gangster's prosthetic iron hand with one fist), his skills as a ladies' man and mechanic, his history of romantic involvement with virtually every attractive woman in Milwaukee, and his imperturbable "cool." Opponents far larger and more dangerous-seeming than himself back down from confrontations with him. Those who do confront him never come out on top, leaving 'The Fonz" without a scrape.

Fonzie usually exhibited an unflappable personality during times of challenge, stress, or annoyance (although as the series progressed he became more susceptible to irritation). Fonzie's "cool" occasionally manifested as the ability to make mechanical objects function with a single touch, implying that he knew so much about how they worked that he could set the works in motion via one "Technical Tap"; he frequently started and stopped the jukebox at Arnold's diner by this process. This knack eventually became almost supernatural in nature when he proved able to achieve similar effects by snapping his fingers."

All I can say is Thank You. I am really honored.

Pietrus!!!!! I've been asking for it for the whole offseason. He was the big time propsect before they drafted Monta Eliis. Plus with Pietrus, he would give us the French conncetion. Pietrus and Ronny..teammates for years, might do really well together.

To do this, the Lakers would have to sign and trade.

Warriors get:
Crittenton, Vlad

Lakers get
Pietrus, Jasikevicus.

The deal would help both teams instantly.

The Warriors want to get rid of Jasikevicus, plus they need a point guard of the future to play behind Baron Davis. They could get Crittenton would probably would really fit their style if he has a nice jump shot to go with quickness. Vlad fits their need for good shooters, if they decide to get rid of Barnes.

The Lakers, lose Crittenton, but gain Pietrus who is still very young,..and IS VERSATILE to play everything from SF to PG. The guy is a vastly underrated player. Plus they could use a guy like Jaskivecus, who shoots threes from the point position.

Lakers:
C Bynum/Kwame/Mihm
PF Odom/ Turiaf/Cook
SF Pietrus/Walton
SG Kobe/Evans
PG Fisher/Farmar/Jaskivicus

Pietrus is good for 13ppg, Odom good for 16pgg, and Kobe good for 30pgg.

By the way, people asking for C-Webb have to be joking.. You remember those Kings teams? That CHOKED in the playoffs. Remember who was at teh root of the CHOKING??? Your sudden man, C-Webb. Guy never hit a big shot in his life. I dont know why suddenly he has gained a rep as a veteran leader or something. The guy is not even in Grant Hill's league. Webber had about 4 solid years, same as Hill, but at least Hill was clutch. Not to mention is is slow as hell and his jumpshot is gone. C-Webb would be terrible on the Lakers.

Serioiusly, dont you remember how much trash we talked about C-Webb for beign a complete joke? Sonnybellfast should know about this.

Taliq
(i think you meant to reply to "Chris" with this post, he posted the link to the smush article, not me) i agree with you nontheless, Violater
so.. here you go,
Chris,

"You can do worse than smush. Gunner shall I spell it out for you!!!

Stop cherry picking and read my post. I said Kobe's poor shooting contributed to loss. But he was actually playing some defense defending Hamilton and trying to dish the ball.

What you fail to understand is Shaq being 3 times MVP, knows 'Defense Wins Titles' and he did not play much stellar defense Come on, 3 blocks in the entire series. Detroit was averaging > 30 fouls a game. Obviously the lane was open. It was Shaq's job to dissuade the opposition from entering lane.

You are the one who keeps reminding us he was the 3 time MVP, wining not all about scoring is it now. You do have to stop the other team from scoring from time to time. Don't forget Malone did play, so our main line of defense was going to be Shaq!! Or are you going to tell us it was not Shaq's job to protect the lane.

I forgot Shaq is just a scorer he does not need to play any defense and get back on transition defense. This was Detroit exploited the whole series.

I am not blaming Shaq alone, I am saying with Kobe's poor shooting in 4/5 games, Shaq none existent transition & lane defense and poor FT's, poor adjustments by Jackson, poor team shooting & defense. These all contributed to a loss. But I do not expect you to have any balance or look at the whole game.

Once again you indulge in your childish insults and expect nothing less from you!!

Aaarrrhhhh!!

Angry_Laker

The question is always asked,"Why don't we (the Lakers) get so and so?"
The Lakers cannot get him because either he does not want to play for Lakers or the player will not fit in with the team.

For most of the free agents that most people ask about, the players are available because they want more money (which the Lakers cannot afford) or they want to play for a "contener" which teh Lakers are not.

Would the Lakers be better off to sign say a James Posey and win three more games than last year and lose a 7th game in the first round of the playoff or miss the playoffs and get the chance to get a good first round pick in the draft after?

The way I see things, the Lakers will be better off if they are prepared to be worse off for a year or two Kobe is still young. He has about 8 years of good basketball in him. Steve Nash won the MVP in his 30's and he is still
playing high level basketball. Kobe would understand if he is made to realize that any addition of a superstar at his stage will be offset by erosion of the role players that the team would not be a whole.

I don't think a Kobe and Garnett combination with ANY OTHER 10 players could win the NBA championship next year. Patience is virtue
