Best of luck to Derek Fisher

pm
Former Laker Derek Fisher will be released from his contract with the Utah Jazz to help take care of his young daughter, who'll be undergoing chemo treatment for eye cancer detected during the '07 playoffs. Fisher said he's not retiring, but acknowledges that basketball is a secondary priority right now, which creates a need to step away from the court.
D-Fish has always been a favorite of BK and mine, among the elite when it comes to NBA players we truly respect on and off the court. We wish the best to his family.

"Woah, woah buddy. Usually I let some of your comments that I disagree with slide, but this one? That's crazy talk. Donald Sterling is a Scrooge and that's the reason Lamar isn't on the Clippers. "
i agree Donald "penny pincher" Sterling is a Scrooge, but that year, Mr. Scrooge did open up the pocket book for Magette and Brand, but decided to, wisely, pass on matcing Odom's offer from Miami. Don't get me wrong, Odom will make a great role player, but Odom+Butler=Shaq? Come one, i would have been less upset had kobe signed, then trade Shaq for better value or at least expiring contracts. Just my take. And thanks for letting my shizzle slide, i owe you one.

generic_one,
"Donald Sterling is a Scrooge and that's the reason Lamar isn't on the Clippers. "
Didn't Miami offer big contracts to both Elton Brand and Lamar Odom (both restricted free agents at the time) with the intention that the Clippers wouldn't (or couldn't) match both? I vaguely remember that. Sterling chose to match the offer for Brand.

D-Fish is going to be a Laker no question... Kobe needs to call him up right now and offer him the gig.....
Again we need to see if we can get Artest from the Kings...
I can't imagine the Kings will not be willing to trade Ron ROn if they can get rid of one of their long contract like Shareef or Kenny Thomas
I say offer Kwame, Mo Evans and Brian Cook along with Clifferton or Farmar for Shareef or Kenny and ROn Ron... Kings will get the big they need to clog the middle ( Lol Mike T) they get Mo Evans whom they drafted for another expiring contract as well as a shooter with a very favorable contract in Cookie and young upcoming PG in Farmar or Clifferton..... What's there not to llike.... I think Mitch is just not smart enough to entertain this... Now I think personally Shareef might be a better fir since his got the same amount of years as Kenny but for much less money owed.....
Side note.... Cookie, Kwame and Mo each averaged double digits in pts against the Kings.... Three combined for an average of 48pts a game in the 4 games they played with the Kings... Got to think the Kings will be interested mightly... Also They will have expriing contracts of well over 11.5 Million after next season....
With that said if the Lakers can get Maglore in part of their MLE which I think just needs convincing they should be fine.... THis way they should be conteders and still be under the luxury tax.......
With a line up of
Fish/Clifferton or Farmar
Kobe/Clifferton or Farmar
Artest/Luke Vrad
Odom/Turiaf/Shareef/Vrad
Maglore/Bynum/Turiaf
Now that is a defensice line-up that's bound to itimidate anyone... With Kobe, Ron Ron and D-Fish that got to be the deepest defensive on ball line-up in the NBA...

KLBeast,
I stopped reading this blog for more than one week, because all I see in this blog is your everyday hatred for Kobe and your non-stop bickering back and forth with other rationale bloggers. Man, get a LIFe!!! Join any rally available for whatever issues they have, play tennis, play basketball, pasture the farm, clean graffiti, enlist in CALTRANS to clean freeways as if you're doing your Community Service, anything positve. Instead of you wasting your time and energy bashing KOBE everyday and fighting with normal bloggers here, adhere to my advice and you will feel relieve, be a normal person again. PEACE MAN.

Yeah, I agree with you that Odom + Butler isn't close to the MDE, but there was no way that we were going to get equal value for him. We got about the best that we could. Since we were hamstrung by the comments that he made about opting out if he didn't go somewhere he liked our options were severely limited. We weren't going to trade him to a WC team and since he didn't want to play in a cold climate, that left the southern states, mostly.
Andrew Z:

Yes. You are absolutely correct and I had totally forgotten about that until you mentioned it. Okay, so Sterling didn't do so bad there.

take advice from a kobe loyalist? should i follow you off the bridge as well? i guess since my opinion is counter to your beliefs, then i'm a "moron" with no life. look, i've had plenty of "rational" and "intellegent" conversation with many bloggers out there (i won't call them out because i don't want to embarasse them) who appreciate honest conversations about what's wrong with the lakers. it starts with kobe bryant........it's not fair, but it's the way it is. role players win championships, but the stars get the credit. conversely, star players get the blame.........isn't this what your hero kobe wanted all along? to be the star and replace shaq as the face of the franchise?
so you sheeps can run through your trade scenarios and "what if", but it won't make one damn difference on getting the lakers closer to a champiosnhip becuase that ship sailed to Miami. now were stuck with a primadonna who won't even accept his responsibility as the laker so-called franchise guy. kobe ain't no franchise guy.......perhaps a McDonalds franchise, but definitely not the laker franchsie. kobe is a sideshow to the circus act known as Lakers Basketball. We see kobe run and jump through rings of fire, carry elephants on his shoulder (i'm not talking about shaq either), but we ain't winning championships with kobe as the #1. kobe is a second banana with talents which rivals a #1.

Korey,
Bynum played over 1700 minutes last season averaging 21.9 minutes a game with 52 starts. The guy who invented PER, John Hollinger, thinks that is way more than enough for PER to be valid and relevant. So that's enough for me.
As for flashes of brilliance how about these games:
Oct. 31 against PHX - In 24 minutes he shot 63% from the field scoring 18 points, grabbing 9 boards, and dishing 5 assists. (This was without Kobe)
Nov. 7 against MIN - In 29 minutes he shot 67% (6 of 9), scored 20 points, 14 rebounds, blocked 3 shots, with no fouls and no turnovers.
Nov. 19 agains CHI - in 28 mintues he shot 50%, scored 12 points, pulled down 13 boards, and blocked 4 shots.
Jan. 5 against DEN - In 29 minutes he shot 89% (8 of 9), scored 19 points, grabbed 10 boards, blocked 6 shots, 3 assists, and even 1 steal, with only 2 fouls and 1 turnover.
Jan. 28 agains SAS - although he only shot 33% in 44 minutes he scored 14 points, got 11 rebounds, 1 block and 3 assists. Not bad for a 19 year old sophomore against the best defensive team in the league and the NBA champs.
He has definitely shown flashes of brilliance. Remember when Shaq handled him on a dunk and then on the next play he outmanuevred him on in the post and threw it down in his face! That showed fire and balls. I also hear he is working out like crazy this summer.
If Bynum is with us next season he'll average a double double and 2 blocks per game. Pair that with Odom and Kobe and we've got a chance to advance to the second round.

Gino,
That would only be 11 players on the roster. Is that really wise?
You know, when you list players more than once on your chart it sort of confuses things. Whether or not a player can play multiple positions is one thing. However, the person is still only counted once. I could put Kobe down as point, shooting guard and small forward, but he would still only be 1 person. IF that one person gets hurt, you only lose 1 person.
Furthermore, you would be counting on no one getting hurt when you only have 11 players. I'm sorry, but based on the track record of these guys, chances are, they would have problems at some point during the season because of this.

Rocky,
Basketball is the best game on the planet (not pluto either). American Footbal and the NBA are on similar levels for me, but my passion is basketball.
"I'm a Lakerfan first. I love basketball, that's why I'm here wasting my time typing up stuff about the Lakers and Kobe's punk ass. I am a better fan than you."
You and I, both on wasting time. I guess we're not that dissimilar.
"In order to be a Lakerfan, one must love the game of basketball right?? I don't understand your point."
my point is that there are a lot of bandwagon fans who don't play ball or know laker b-ball history making lame comments on kobe. so my point is that a laker fan (particularly the fans uber-partial to kobe) are not necessarily basketball fans. am i talking out of my a$$? i certaintly feel like it today.

JJ,
If you only list a player at one position, especially with bench players, you don't give a true picture of what the rotations will be, and what real depth, or lack of depth, a team has.
For instance, at some points last season Mo Evans could accurately be listed as being the primary backup at both SG and SF. Rony Turiaf is realistically in the rotation at some point for both C and PF. There were times last season when he was the primary backup at both of those positions.

Mike,
Korey is right about Bynum. The games you reference were very solid games. I would call the Oct 31, Nov 7, and Jan 5 "great games" but not "flashes of brilliance." The other two games were not "great", just pretty good.
If a player is going to be GREAT, asopposed to GOOD, they will almost always show in increasing number of games that take your breath away. Bynum hasn't done that. If you could show 20 games from last season with box scores similar to those five, I might agree with you. But so far he looks like he is on track to be a decent player, but not a consistent all star.

I'm not going to try and change your mind over this blog. KB24 will have to change your mind with his play on the court (in purple and gold) this upcoming season. I'm confident he will do just that, and by this time next year you will not only be a Lakers supporter but a KB24 supporter. Imagine that, KL Beast and Gunner24 singing the praises of KB24...that day will come soon, whether you like it or not.

Mike in the Mountain West, I'm with you. I think it is insanity to unload Bynum for someone like Jermaine ONeal or pretty much anyone else but Garnett. Every team in the league is screaming for a franchise Center and there's about what? 3 of them? Here we are, sitting on a young guy that just played his first real season, showed some nice touch around the basket, the ability to block shots and clearly wore down from playing too many minutes and everybody wants to unload him for NOTHING!!!
NOTHING!!! I SAY! NOTHING!!!
Can't these people look more than one season ahead? There's very few real Centers in this league, there's some 7 footers, but very few real, traditional centers and now that we have sat on a developing one for 2 years, we're going to dump him right before he starts paying dividends? INSANITY, I tell you! I think this Oden thing is the greatest thing that could have happened to Bynum. They're both about the same age so they'll push each other over the years and WE should benefit from that IF we keep him.
What is it? Like 110 degrees today? Maybe I should go stick my head in the pool... it's overheating... LOL!

More than likely, the Lakers and Suns could meet again. I could see that barring injury, the Suns could be the #1 seed and the Lakers the #8 seed.
So in a 7 game series, the Lakers would need to learn how to keep games close. Game I this year, they kept it close and probably should have won the game if not for lucky bounces to steve nash, some suspect decisions by Smush parker, and Kobe going cold in the 4th quarter. (something that gets overlooked by some bloggers). WHY NOBODY TALKS ABOUT KOBE GOING COLD IN THE 4TH QUARTER AGAINST THE SUNS IN GAME 1, is mystifying.
reguarding KG
Ric Bucher said on ESPN yesterday, that the ball is in the Suns's court on pulling the trigger for KG. THey just have to decided to give up Amare .I know you all are worried about KG going to the Suns. But honestly, I feel like Phoenix becomes the same team. KG is great, but I doubt he produces more than Amare. Amare is super athletic, potenitally dominant, explosive, and a little more clutch than KG. Remember the knock on him is that KG is not clutch. Amare has been clutch in the playoffs.
Personally, if KG goes the Suns, it doesnt do anything but make the Suns older.
The Lakers have no problem in terms of maturity, in terms of late game. They were just not skilled, but if you ever saw late games, the Lakers stayed in it. When the ball was kept out of Kwame/Smush's hands late in the game, Luke, Odom and Kobe did more than enough to make smart decisions.
And then you always have Phil who easily outcoaches DiAntoni. For all of you that hate Phil, Phil keeps games with the Suns close based on his coaching, usage of timeouts, etc. DiAntoni has three excellent players, and also Raja bell who is not an idiot either. He has the benefit of skilled players that Phil doesnt.
So the trick is just like Game 1 that they should have won if not for Kobe going 0-fer, and Game 3 in which they won, is to keep the game close. The suns most likely have to trade Amare and a bench player to get KG. That would make the already thin Suns, even thinner off the bench.
While I havent been a supporter of the Lakers FO entirely, I see that the Lakers are actually playing it smart.
The Lakers will at worst run a 10 man rotation against the Suns 6.
All the Lakers really need to do is not choke, get a few game-changing plays (a Kobe 3, Odom, three point play, a bynum defensive play) and they could easily beat Phoenix.
If the Lakers dont get KG, then Im not scared about the Suns getting him and you shouldnt be either.

Some may consider it wrong of me for bringing up but I am slightly confused as to why Fisher would opt right out of his contract with three years to go...even if he took an entire season off and returned to the jazz...presumably they would want him and it would be in his interests to return to that deal and promising team.
Im guessing it must be possible as far as the rules are concerned becasue Jordan returned to his original contract after retiring the first time.
What am I missing here?

Kiwi,
Besides his daughter, I think Fish saw this as his way out of Utah. I think he wanted to go somewhere else.
Posted by: zen | July 03, 2007 at 01:26 PM
Kiwi,
Fisher asked to be released from his contract so he could be with his family and then to move his family to a city where they had specialists for his daughter's type of cancer. It was strictly a family relocation move. I think he enjoyed Utah but needs to be in another city for his daughter.
He said right now it's all about his family and being with them, but he's not retiring and that he'll be a free agent this year.
It had to be a mutual understanding between the Jazz and Fisher to dissolve the contract. Kudos to the Jazz front office for the class act.
Posted by: Andrew Z | July 03, 2007 at 01:28 PM
Kiwi,
Fisher doesnt plan on retiring and I believe still would play next year. He just wants to move to a city where he can get good health care for his daughter. Places like New York, LA, Florida, I would imagine.'
Fisher should come here to City of Hope. They saved my grandmother's live twice.
God bless.

The Jordanaires
"Let’s just summarize the Jordan and the Jordanaires story. MJ was an amazing player. In the book we argue that he might have been the best ever (although one could argue for Magic Johnson, a story I might get to tomorrow). But without Pippen and Grant – and later on, Pippen and Rodman – Jordan could have been Kevin Garnett, part one.
Jordan was fortunate to play with players who were extremely productive. These players all posted outstanding numbers without Jordan, suggesting it was not Jordan who made them better (and as detailed in the book, the Law of Diminishing Returns tells us that Jordan did not make them better). And Pippen and Grant were both acquired by Krause in the 1987 draft.
Yes, Krause was given a huge building block in Michael Jordan. But other general managers – like Kevin McHale – have been given similar building blocks and yet failed to build a championship contender. Again, one player cannot win a title. Teams win titles. And on the Bulls, it was the team of Jordan, Pippen, and Grant that dethroned the Bad Boys and won three titles. Two-thirds of this trio was chosen by Krause, and for that he should be given a substantial amount of credit (even if it was all just luck, but that’s another story of another day)."

The blog is a place where opinions SHOULD differ, and where people should be able to come to talk about the team they love (or in some cases hate). I can disagree with you without talking about your mom, or saying your an idiot (even though some of the stuff you say qualifies....J/K). Even though you don't like Kobe you seem to have reasons, and usually present those reasons in a logical way so I can respect that.

throughout every moment of your professional basketball career
i have always respected your work ethic
your unrelenting desire to give your all night in and night out
and your creative and exciting basketball game......dope!!!
i have sincerely hoped the best for you at every turn
i have also been a laker fan since i was a boy
i am now 44 and i love the lakers the same as when i was 11, but deeper
i am always hoping that they will get better and make good decisions
and tap into the magic at all costs
go lakers
when they resigned you for 6 or 7 more years or whatever it is
i was so happy
kobe bryant! the best player in the game! my favorite!
i listened to people call you arrogant, selfish, and dishonest, only
out for your own glory
i argued with them telling them that they mistook your greatness,
confidence, and burning desire to win for arrogance
and i told them that we were lucky to see a person so dedicated to
their craft playing at such a high level
that you expected others to work hard on their game too
that you were a good guy
and that you were an athlete not a p.r. man, and that lots of other
players put on a smiley generous face but were selfish when the
cameras were down
and i respected your privacy
kobe.......... you have given us laker fans a lot of joy we love you
and respect you
in any event
during my time as a hardcore laker fan
there have been ups and downs
lots of ups!
we had magic johnson!
kareem abdul jabbar!
and you!
and michael cooper one of my favorites! he had a lot of heart!
when things have not gone well for the lakers
it is very difficult for a focused fan like me
arrghhh....... when tim thomas made that three a couple of seasons
ago.............OUCH
someone for whom, no matter whatever else is going on in my life
the lakers have been a constant, something that keeps going on..........
life is great?.....watch the lakers game
getting a divorce?......watch the lakers game
just went to a funeral?.............watch the laker game
depressed and in bed?
just made a million dollars?..........rode a ten foot wave in costa
rica?...............you get it......
it is hard to be a fan when things are not going well
but it is an emotional investment, that, over time, always pays off
never lose hope
and when the winning comes, it is all the more worth it to have been
through the drought
and all us real fans, the ones who stick with the team no matter
what, we know it, and we relate to each other
and it brings us, the community of los angeles together, and it is
beautiful, and transcends all ethnic and economic boundaries
it seems to me that it is harder than ever to build a great
basketball team in the nba
there are so many teams
not to mention so many good ones in the west
ooh how i hoped we could have gotten jason kidd, and ahhhhh, i felt
it when we couldn't get boozer

people in the world could ever dream of to do it
what a story of a life!....whoa!
kobe bryant....................we true fans, have lived this story
too.................we know it is not easy to do what you have
done.......
if you leave kobe
if you do you will break our hearts
the ones who have stood by you through thick and thin
the ones who love you
and truly care about you
we all know that things have not gone as well since jerry west left
for whatever the reason is........too many cooks in the
kitchen......it is impossible to measure up to the greatness of jerry
west......
mitch has had a lot of tough breaks too and not a lot too work with
thank god we are rid of that absurd brian grant salary finally
but us fans can only really guess at what is really going on

we are on your side
we believe in you
we love you
we feel your frustration
and know that it is rooted in the truth
but...............come on man

talk about whatever idiot in the laker organization mouthed off to
the press? they all say that stuff about you...all of them!
yeah they will be happy if you go there because you are the greatest
player , but it will not, could not be the truth, their love will be
shallow
US TRUE FANS KNOW THE TRUTH
we do not talk trash about you, havenot
we are here for you
we have been through all of it and stood by you
and that is more important than anything else that you will ever get
anywhere else

Bynum is the most overrated prospect in the league.
The guy doesn't know how to play smart defense.
The guy doesn't have the physical stamina to play a entire regular season.
That's why he play like a all star the first 2 months, and after that socks in a big way.
If the Lakers plan to depend on him to make the leap this year, they are foolish. Well, Phil isn't. He knows Bynum is at best a unreliable bench player coming playoffs time. Why?
He doesn't follow up assignments.
He commit too many mental errors.
He is out of position most of the times.
He can't play more than 7 minutes straight, If he does, he can't move the feet and is like playing with 4 against 5, in the court.
Who will be Bynum in 10 years?
You're kidding me?
We are talking about winning it all now, my friends, and talking about something less will be uncivilized.

Would love to see Fish on the Lakers again
But not if Kobe is here. D. Fish doesn't deserve that.

exhelodrvr,
I agree with that, however, every depth chart I have seen only list players 1 time. That is because at the end of the day, no matter how many positions they can play, they onlyu fill 1 of those positions at a time.
When we lost Lamar for part of the season, we lost 1 player. Although he played multiple positions, he was still only 1 player. Furthermore, the Lakers have stated that they want to have 14 players on their roster and that chart only accounted for 11 players.

Kiwi,
"even if he took an entire season off and returned to the jazz...presumably they would want him and it would be in his interests to return to that deal and promising team"
I don't think they would want to lose a key player "on purpose" with the plan being to get him back, especially someone like Fisher who is on the backside of his career. I think a major part of his value to Utah is his leadership; his stats last season were not that great, and his defense is not what it used to be. He had a couple of excellent games in the playoffs, which is what people remember, but they were not typical of his play last year.
How would that work with the salary cap? I suspect it would count against it. Otherwise teams would be likely to do that frequently. (i.e. Kwame, here's 8.2M, just take the year off!)

KLHATER
I feel honored that you have used my initials as your screenname.
WOW
okay enough fun for one day. I apologize for getting you upset. try and have a nice 4th of July.
WEAVE-MAN
Yeah, I think wow’s not a happy camper right about now. I don’t recall saying anything overly offensive to wow, but hey, I’ve been called worse.
“I can disagree with you without talking about your mom, or saying your an idiot (even though some of the stuff you say qualifies....J/K).”
I’ll concede that a lot of what I say qualifies or idiocy. BTW, if someone wants to call me an “idiot” I don’t mind, just tell my why…….that’s all I ask. You have a nice 4th of July.
JORMEA
not bad. very creative. Me gusta.

Miss van,andrew Z and Zen,
Thankyou all...Being in a city to help his daughter is a noble and sensible move for the present but I think there is a possibility Zen is on the right track ...I would have thought it more likely to keep the door open at least for a certain period of time..but who knows and it's one instance where I dont want, and should not, get into detail.
Best wishes to the Fishers and respect to the jazz.

JJ,
We realize that Lamar is only one person, even if he plays multiple positions. BUt when you are looking at how players complete a roster, you need to look at what positions they are capable of playing, because that has a significant effects on what players a team will try to obtain.

jorema,
I would hate to trade Bynum and have him become the very player you don't think he will become. What would you say then when Kobe is nolonger able to do it?
Posted by: JJ | July 03, 2007 at 02:01 PM
Ventro, Weave man,
What are you two? The new spoke persons for KL. Are you two trying to show him some love since KL needs a hug, his mother never hugged him enough.
Rocky,
You love him going after overloyal Kobe fans. I am a kobe fan. But I have come down on Kobe when it warrants. I don have a problem if you hate Kobe and such, that is your personnel right. But when you start stating unfactual claims like Derek Fisher does not like Kobe, and we all know Fisher befriends Kobe and Shaq, then you are been a weasel. Then you are becomoing what today journalist do, which is say things and state them as fact but its not so. That's my problem. If you going to say things, say the truth. Be a man and don't say cowardly things on a blog behind a computer screen knowing that you are protected and then say the Bill of Rights protects me too. KL has said alot of things that he knows is not true, and you sit here and say say all the things you want. You are a grown adult and you should know better. If you are going to talk about another man, don't say things that is pure BS just to discredit him. Come with your argument with concrete reason and fuatual claim to prove you point and leave it like that. Don't come on this blog with the same objective every day about one person.
