Best of luck to Derek Fisher

July 2, 2007 |  6:30 pm

Former Laker Derek Fisher will be released from his contract with the Utah Jazz to help take care of his young daughter, who'll be undergoing chemo treatment for eye cancer detected during the '07 playoffs.  Fisher said he's not retiring, but acknowledges that basketball is a secondary priority right now, which creates a need to step away from the court.

D-Fish has always been a favorite of BK and mine, among the elite when it comes to NBA players we truly respect on and off the court.  We wish the best to his family.

Fish=Anti-Kobe

thank you Derek Fisher for all the good times when you were with the Lakers. i have always admired your character, sportsmanship, and values... and your faith really shines through your actions. continue to trust in God with your daughter and know a lot of people out there are praying for you and your family. =]

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers3jul03,1,108436.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-nba-lakers

The Lakers are seeking a veteran ballhandling guard and could offer him up to approximately $5 million for next season, if he chooses not to retire.

"We're going to have an open mind," said Fisher's agent, Mark Bartelstein. "It's certainly something we'd look at, but I think we have to take some time to digest everything that's happened."

i posted this a couple days ago i believe. but i remember after a game against orlando the commentatorswere talking about bynum spending his summer woking on his game with D. Howard. Does anybody know anything about this or even remember hearing that rumor?

andand

KL,

If I was you, I would seriously stay away from me. I don't like you at you, I hate the way you back your facts up by picking and choosing. And since you are like that I don't even take you seriously or respect you. And I haven't had the strength to go at you, but don't awake a sleeping monster. You have your freedom to say you baseless claim and live in your fratious world. Thats why I have repeatdly tell you to stay away from me. I'm not like Mamba that is respectful, I'll cut straight to your BS facts and you incompetence when it comes to bball knowledge. Stay away from me man. I don't play that sh8t.

And you are right I am menstrating, which even means back the back off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike in the Mountain West,
I'll tell you why your #s dont make sense.

They dont account for fouls. Why do you think that Bynum only played a "few" minutes per game? It wasnt because of his conditioning. It was his very high propensity for fouls. Thus, I would argue it isnt uncommon for a reserve player to play 15 minutes a game and have a high PER.

When he starts playing some real NBA minutes, then you look at stuff like PER. But when he is barely playing because he cant help but FOUL then PER is meaningless. It's being efficient in a limited sample size of time on the court. And that time on the court hurts the team more than helps.

Evaluating Bynum's star potential is easy...
How many times did Andrew have 15 or more rebounds last year? 10 or more?
How many times did Andrew score 20 or more points last year? 15 or more?
How many times did Andrew have 3 or more blocks? 2 or more?

IF the guy is really a "star" player the numbers you come up for those stats should be favorable. Potential stars "flash" their potential. They show you every so often that "hey, this kid can be special".

What games last season did you observe Andrew "go to work" for a 3-5 minute span of the game and think "damn, we got something here".

You know the answer as well as I do. And it's not good. Andrew wont be the HOF'er, All-Star that you project. He will be solid.

and you want to waste Kobe's prime on a "solid" player. Bank the Lakers' long-term future on a "solid" player?

.... think about that...

May God bless your child to recovery D-Fish.... I've been one of many thousands of Angeleno's that have admired your profesionalism.... If there is any chance we sure can use you next year.... But first my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family....

I just posted my entry to the "Kobe Petition" as follows:

Kobe, you suck. Please take your attitude and leave LA. You broke up the laker dynasty for your own selfish agenda and now you won't accept responsibility. I don't care if you the "best player on the planet [Pluto]". You always will be the Biggest Second Banana. You will also never be better than Shaq or Michael Jordan. Say "hi" to your Plutonian bretherns for me.

KL

Best wishes for a classy Derek Fisher.
Whatever you do D-Fish, all the best to you and your family
for a safe recovery with your daughter.
Once that is taken care of, and if it works out like Destiny
was there when you saved the Jazz in 07 playoffs, and it's
Destiny again and the care centers are in LA, come home
And play and retire a Laker.

All the best in any event. D-Fisher, a clutch, calm, champion Laker always!
I was watching the Sacramento game 7 2002 on YouTube last month.
It was incredible what the Lakers were then and what can be again.
Let's GO LAKERS!
LakeShow from 80s to 2000s Always! Go LAKERS!

"DEREK FISHER,

Best of luck and best wishes for you and your daughter. I’m happy to see that you won your championship playing under the leadership of Shaq. I’m sorry that you were unable to win 3 more because of kobe’s selfishness. Please consider playing for LA once kobe leaves for free agency or is traded away to Timbuktu."

KL, this is the most disgusting and selfish comment I have ever ran across on a blog. I hope all that hate in your heart doesn't lead you to a sad and lonely life. I don't like wishing bad on people and no matter how much I dislike you I only wish you the best but If you're going to wish a class act like fisher and his family the best of luck in their sad time please don't diminish your best wishes with hate. This is only a request and I’m sure it will fall on deaf ears but please don't speak of your hate for Kobe when talking about D-Fish and the situation his family is in.

Thanks
Bob

KL

"Why do you think Fish left?? Shaq-era was over and Kobe-era began. That’s why a person with “class” and “character” left LA. Hell, look around everyone left except for George and now he's gone too. All that remains for the Shaq-era lakers is kobe the bleep."

I didn't know you were privy to Derek's decision-making process. Are you sure it wasn't because of the much-deserved contract Cupcake won't give him?

To Derek and his family, our best wishes to you. We pray for your daughter's full and speedy recovery.

I give guys like Mamba24 all the respect in the world cuz we can disagree but have a healthy respect for one another as laker fans. You, KobeTom, Mitchell are the true haters. You don’t care about the lakers, you only care about kobe Bryant. When kobe leaves an old man, at 31 in 2009, Wade, Melo and LBJ will be the face of the franchise and kobe will only be an asterisk in the NBA history book as the greatest talent to have severely underachieved. That’s the truth and I’m out.

MAGIC'S HOWARD CAN SEE BYNUM'S IMPROVEMENT
Orlando's budding superstar, just 21 himself, can tell that the Lakers' 19-year-old center is making his presence felt.
By Jerry Crowe, Times Staff Writer
January 13, 2007

But that's where the similarities end between New Jersey-bred center Andrew Bynum of the Lakers and his shorter, slightly older counterpart, Atlanta-bred Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. The two lined up against one another tonight in Staples Center and, if arrangements can be made, plan to train together this summer.

Andand,

I remember the rumor, some time around the all-star break, that Bynum and D. Howard were becoming
friends and would work out together this summer. I have heard no confirmation that Bynum is doing
this. I think that if Bynum does not have a good/great year everyone will think the Lakers FO were
..... lame for not making the J-Kidd trade.

PAY MIHM, PAY MIHM, PAY MIHM, PAY MIHM THE WHOLE MLE.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hixRBmCs-28

AS U CAN SEE

LAKERS DON'T HAVE QUALIFIED CENTER LIKE THIS. MIHM COULD

MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR US. THE BULLS WANT TO PAY HIM THE

WHOLE M L E WE ONLY WANT TO GIVE HIM HALF MLE (2.5 MILL)

CONSIDERING WE PAID HIM 4.2MILL LAST YEAR AND HE DIDN'T EVEN

STEP ON THE COURT. SO I SEE MGMT POINT. BUT IF WE CAN PAY

WALTON THE WHOLE MLE; WHY NOT MIHM..IF YOU CHECK HIS STATS,

EVERYTIME HE PLAYED MORE THAN 25MINS, HE AVG 15PTS,

8RBS...THAT'S AWESOME CUZ THAT'S WHAT LAMAR AVGS AND HE

GETS PAID 14MILL. BULLS ARE GOING TO GET HIM!

U NOTICE THAT EACH TIME THIS GUY PLAYS MORE THAN 30MINS, HE AVG 15PPG, 8RBS.

I can't imagine what D-Fish and his family are going through. I am sure he wamts to savor his time with his daughter right now. Best of luck to the Fisher family!

SUN YUE STEALS BALL FROM D.WADE IN FIBA 2006

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGWQu-B7_nE

I hope the D. Fish story can FINALLY convince certain bloggers here from casually using the term "cancer" to describe a player they hate.

My prayers go out to Fish and his family. He is truly a class act and a pure example of what a real man is.

We hope all goes well with your daughter and we'd be honored to be considered your team of choice if and when you decide to come back to the game.

We love you Fish!

KL,
you are relentless...
No matter the subject, you can find a way to SLAM kobe. That said, i don't disagree. It was just a bit unexpected, as i scrolled through the messages of well wishing, "please come backs" and WHAM!
"Why would Fish come back and waste the remainder of his career being around kobe when he can to and play for a real contender?"
HAHA...
I fear you are right. This is something that affects any potential veteran signing.

Hey everybody...what's up with the Mamba24? He can't leave. Anyone know why?

I couldn't come on yesterday and I missed this. What is going on? Mamba24 can't leave!

Fish,

You're the definition of what a professional athlete should be. Best of luck to you and your family during this tough time. If you do decide to continue playing, we would love to have you back. I think you would be the mentor that Kobe still needs until he fully matures. A lineup of:

PG-Fisher, Farmar
SG-Bryant, Evans
SF-Walton, Radmanovic
PF-Garnett, Cook
C-Mihm, Turiaf

can definitely compete for a title. Our prayers are with you!

KL,

Stop your being such a hater. People here are expressing their prayers and comfort to Derek Fisher and here you are starting up your Hate Kobe campaign. Get a life. Go to another blog where bloggers share the same insight as you.
If D-Fish feels that the best place for his daughter to get the best care is located here in LA, and The Lakers happen to sign him, then I have nothing but praise for him coz I think everyone here will agree with me that The Lakers are doing what is right for a Class Act like him. D-Fish will also sign since he already have that relationship with the fans here and everyone in LA loves Fish.

So KL... move to another state if you can't stand Kobe being a Laker.

Looser!!!

Juno

thoughts and prayers with d fish, his daughter, and family.

you can never question what d fish stands for.

if he decides to play again, the door is always open at staples.

whenever (if) he is ready, the lakers should let him know he has a place to play.

i already had a ton of respect for d fish...there aren't too many (if any) like him in professional sports.

Another day, another mindless "Kobe sucks!" rant from you-know-who. How old are you anyways, and why do you have so much time on your hands to spout your OCD laced diatribes all day long? I pop in here maybe once or twice a day to check on the latest from the bloggers, and no matter when I check, you're bullsh*t (and that's exactly what it is) is plastered all over the place. You must have them catalogued by now for easy reference. I don't usually have time to post, and I know I'm giving you exactly what you want by responding to your delusional ravings, but hey, I’m only human.

For someone who claims to be in the financial industry, you seem to have very little common sense or insight. You make assumptions about others motives and decision making processes with absolutely no real facts to back you up. What fool would trust you with their money?

KL,
"Why would Fish come back and waste the remainder of his career being around kobe when he can to and play for a real contender?"

FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY FISH IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A TEAM PLAYER BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT. HE'S MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION AND IF I WAS IN HIS PLACE, I WOULD BE DOING THE SAME. AND I SEND MY PRAYERS OUT TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY. GOD WILL SEE THEM THROUGH THIS.

SECOND, FISH IS THE TYPE OF PLAYER THAT OUR ONCE POTENTIAL DYNASTRY LOSS AFTER THE BIG IRRELEVANT KOBE BRYANT FORCE EVERYONE OUT. IF FISH COMES BACK, IT WOULD BE A BIG SURPRISE. BUT I KNOW FISH DOES NOT WON'T ANY OF THE TNT DRAMA SERIES THAT THE BALL HOG HAS BEEN DISPLAYING FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS.

AND IF MY MAN MAMBA24 IS GONE.

HE'S LEAVING OVER THE EMBARASSMENT IS SO-CALLED IDOL HAS PUT OVER THIS ONCE GREAT FRANCHISE.

MAMBA24 IS A SMART GUY. HE KNOWS WHAT'S GOING DOWN THIS SUMMER.

Dear Derek and the Fisher Family,
I am only a few years older than derek and I feel like we grew up together. You always impressed me and were an early addition, and remain part of, my ALL TIME FAVORITES. If it were my choice there would be a couple more jersey's hanging in Staples Center as a tribue to not just the player, but the man. I would retire Derek Fishers's #2 Laker jersey and I'd make sure it had an asteric after it at least for the next 4 or 5 years. The asterick would be the clause that at any time if Derek would like tp return to the Lakers, this jersey could be easily brought out of retirement. I love you Derek and I appreciate your support of the WNBA also, you always have shown that there is better way of conducting your life, this loving stance you are taking for Tatum is pure Fisher....... You are in my prayers. )Whose the opther jersey I'd like to see hung in the rafters? Another unsung hardworking Laker who although he did get recognition for his defense, it's the man himself who truly is a cut above, like Derek Fisher, Michael Cooper out to be offficially recoognized with a Jersey hanging from the Staples Center rafters.

Wow,
"If I was you, I would seriously stay away from me. I don't like you at you, I hate the way you back your facts up by picking and choosing. And since you are like that I don't even take you seriously or respect you."

SO, WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE FUMBLING AT THE MOUTH. JUST TAKE A DEEP BREATH, YOU PLUTOIAN BRETHREN OF THE BIG DIVA. LOL!!!

Utah owner Larry Miller thinks D-Fish is going to wind up with the Lakers

" I'm going to guess that Fisher winds up back with the Lakers. He was the conscience of their championship teams and is still beloved in L.A. The Lakers have a starting point guard job that's open and there's no learning curve for Fisher with the triangle offense."

The article also went on to say:
Fisher's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Fisher would not be sitting out next season and probably would sign during this July window for free agents. Bartelstein wouldn't say what cities would fit Fisher's needs but it's safe to assume http://www.sltrib.com/jazz/2007/07/farewell-to-fisher.htmthey're New York, Los Angeles, etc.

hey d-fish,

my thoughts and prayers are for the speedy recovery of your daughter. thanks for saving L.A. back in '04 against the hated Spurs. We'll see you in October. Peace!

D-Fish and Family,

Just wanted to say my heart and prayers go out to you from my family and I. To your daugther, Tatum, I wish you a speedy recovery little lady! The purple & gold nation will always support you & your family regardless of what happens in your basketball future. WE LOVE YOU, D-Fish!!

Just thought I'd add my voice to the chorus of Lakers' fans who sincerely wish the best to Derek and his family. Fish has consistently been one of the few to make us feel good about sports as a human endeavor rather than just another marketing spectacle. It's inspiring to see him continue to show strength and good judgment even in the face of heat-wrenching adversity.

I agree that his list of potential cities is short. I would guess that they are Minn., Houston, LA, Boston, Cleveland and NY.

Today I will be arranging pieces for our fallen bloggers. Those who have lost their way and those who we hope will come back to us.

Ok, I was just thinking and came up with the BEST solution to our problems. Granted it might make you guys cringe a little. Oh, and by the way, I am Korean, not Chinese.

Trade Kobe for Yao Ming, Shane Battier, and Bob Sura.

Now, probably Houston wouldn't go for this but still... let's continue on.
(btw it works: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=110~976~1722~825&teams=10~13~13~13)

Next, we trade Shane Battier and Bob Sura for Yi Jianliang and Mo Williams. Or some other combination to get Yi Jianliang.

Now, this would give us:

Yao Ming, Yi Jianling, and Sun Yue. That is 3 pieces of the Chinese National Team. If we could keep Lamar Odom or Shane Battier while doing so, we would have a pretty darn good team.

Now, this would be ike the Chinese National Team vs a REGULAR NBA team (non-all star loaded) everyday. I would take my chances on it.

Plus we would have some NBA players that would mix in.

The chemistry would probably be good unless it's divided Chinese vs Rest. But I'm pretty sure this would be awesome. We could have a potential lineup of :

PG : Mo Williams/Farmar/Crittenton
SG: Sun Yue/ Luke Walton
C: Yao Ming/Kwame Brown/Chris Mihm
PF: Yi Jianling
SF: Lamar Odom/Shane Battier

or something like that... I think it'd work pretty well..

just a thought...

GO LAKERS!!!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Fisher family. As a relatively new father I can't fathom having a child be ill like that. I commend Derek for making the smart decision and the Utah Jazz for being so accomodating. Some will say that he did them a favor by clearing cap space, but I'm willing to venture that the money they invested in Fisher has paid, and will continue to pay dividends for years to come.

I was one of the people who was sad to see Fisher go, but completely understood and agreed with not paying him the salary he was commanding. At the time he left the Lakers we all said he couldn't keep up with the younger, faster guards anymore, that he'd lost a step. And we were right. The thing is, he hasn't become any faster or younger, but what he would provide, more than anything, more important than staying in front of his man on defense or knowing the Triangle, is leadership, character, and heart. He would provide an identity to this Laker team, something that we have been without since 2004.

I don't know if Derek Fisher will play basketball again this year or ever. I don't know if he would come back to LA. But I am 100% sure that if he did come back, he would have as great of an impact on this squad, city, and fan base as any free agent or acquired superstar we could grab.

I wish the best for the Fisher family and hope for a wonderful recovery for their daughter.

Gunner24,
Do you know why Fish is more of a team player? Because he doesn't have the talent that Kobe does. If you have talent to score, you need the ball in your hands.

Oh, BTW, I love Derek Fisher and maybe we can sign him to that team with the MLE. Derek, best wishes to your beautiful daughter. May God Bless you and your family.

David Whang,

Last time I checked the Chinese National Team sucked.

Now, give us the Spanish or Argentinian national team and then we'll talk.

generic-one,

Freakin' hilarious.

Mr. Fisher,

Your 0.4 shot versus the Spurs may have saved my life. I was about to get into a fight with a member of the Russian Mafia who had been heckling me throughout the game and really laiding into me in a mocking way when Tim Duncan's monster shot over Shaq went in.

I literally had my hand back in a fist ready to strike when your shot fell. The jerk apologized to me and then bought me shots of vodka. A better way to end it.

Thank you.

I'm very sorry about the condition of your daughter. You and her are in my prayers.

Hey, I've recently been doing freelance writing work for a scientist who has been working on developing various anti-cancer medications from natural sources. He told me that there is a venom from an Israeli scorpion which has been used very successfully in Israel to treat brain cancer. (It is, of course, administered in extremely low dosages.)

If you do a Yahoo or Google search of "scorpion venom" and "cancer" you'll find a whole bunch of pages of it. It's already undergone multiple clinical trials with extremely positive results.

It's worth checking out. It might help.

Anyhow, God bless, and thank you for your time as a Laker.

GO LAKERS!

Mamba24,

Why are you leaving? I must have missed a post. I know how frustrated you are -- Kobe was once my idol and I truly loved him and defended him everyday. I know what you are going through. But you may not leave. We will not let you. You have a no-leaving clause in your Lakersblog contract.

Who will do the Role Call? Only you my friend. We need you here.

GO LAKERS AND COME BACK MAMBA24!!

David Whang,

lol.

Edwin

First off, I’ve always considered you a fair person on this blog as bloggers go……which probably isn’t saying much…..

“KL, I know you don't mean what you always say about Kobe but just trying to tease around bloggers. However, at certain point the words conveyed in form of jokes penetrate the light skinned deep and it's really hurting because your rants becomes an indirect attack to them.”

I find your observation very interesting because I sometimes wonder why some on this blog take it so personal when kobe is called out for what kobe really is.

“You become like a snake in the garden of eden with a happy face but carries along a sinister objective.”

Funny. One-eyed snake with a happy face?? Sounds phallic.

“Therefore, KL try to unmask yourself and absorb the pain of being nice to Kobe and initiate peace with everyone whether it is KobeTom, Fatty or Mitchell, put that humane kindness out there that has been covered by the kobe-hating shell.”

I actually try at times, but the sight of kobe drives me nuts. The dude is counter to the way b-ball should be played. Hey, when kobe wins a championship as the #1 in LA, I’ll relent. As far as I’m concerned, kobe cost us laker fans at least 3 years of contention for the championship.

Hey AK/BK,

This blog is getting ridiculous. What the he** are all these ridiculous posts about? Certainly not basketball. I'm really getting turned off by this nonsense.

Do you guys not have the ability to omit the obviously ridiculous and offensive posts?
