Best of luck to Derek Fisher

Former Laker Derek Fisher will be released from his contract with the Utah Jazz to help take care of his young daughter, who'll be undergoing chemo treatment for eye cancer detected during the '07 playoffs. Fisher said he's not retiring, but acknowledges that basketball is a secondary priority right now, which creates a need to step away from the court.
D-Fish has always been a favorite of BK and mine, among the elite when it comes to NBA players we truly respect on and off the court. We wish the best to his family.

AK BK ...i hope and pray everything works out for d-fish and his family......is he able to sign with any team if he is released?

First of all, I wish only the very best for Derek Fisher, his daughter and his family... BUT, if everything goes OK with the kid, MAYBE, just MAYBE, can the Lakers sign him, let’s say, a year from now? Six months from now?
Posted by: CLeon | July 02, 2007 at 06:39 PM
IF he gets released from the jazz contract does the team that he goes to pick up the remainder of it?

If FISHER comes to the lakers then Kobe has to get on board. FISHER to the Lakers by midseason hopefully if not sooner.

Fisher has always been the best.
Two words describe him: CLutch and CLass.
Derek may your daughter return to full health and may you return to sink some more playoff 3's. And if it ever works out that you get to do that for the Lakers once again, everyone here will be thrilled!

Hey Mamba 24,
I can't believe that you are leaving. You can't do that to us or to me. I mean the one thing I like the most about you is doing that roll call you do. You are like the one person I know that will acknowledge my existence on this planet. You are the one guy that brings joy when everything is gloom with our lakers. And things are still not pretty with out beloved team. So I really and this blog really needs you do what you do. You are a constant on this blog, we all know what to expect from you.
The energy you put in the roll call is what ties all of us as a family on here. You even name people on your roll call that are in the minority and that people like me hate with a passion (KL THE BIT*H). And all that show is that you have love in your heart. You don't even snipe at people that bring gloom to us on this blog.
I have never seen you in real life or know you personally, but the way you have carried yourself on this blog shows what kind of a character you are. And I have to say, you are the saint on this blog. You never exclude anyone or call anyone out of their name. I wish I could do that but I have a little temper. So please don't leave this blog. If you leave, it will be my sign that kobe will be gone too.
I love this laker blog family and you make our family still intact despite our differences. One love man.
And to Derek Fisher,
You are making the right choice. A good man like you knows the approriate time to do things. And family comes first.

Best wishes for Fisher and his baby girl,Tatum. With his fighter mentality, Derek will beat his daughter disease.
I think we will see Fisher in Lakers' uniform comes October; Look at this statement on ESPN: "Fisher said he wants to live in one of the six or seven cities being considered for Tatum's care."

Everybody:
Maybe I am reading this situation wrong but it sure sounded to me that Derek Fisher was making this move right now in order to allow the Jazz an opportunity to sign a point guard to replace him and to give himself a chance possibly to sign with another club in one of the cities with the requisite medical facilities that his daughter needs. And since LA definitely qualifies, the Lakers may suddenly have an opportunity use their MLE to re-sign Derek Fisher, maybe for a couple of years until Farmar and/or Crittenden are ready. And what better mentor to have than Derek! Would you rather have Derek back for a couple of years or Steve Blake? If we have a chance to get Fish with our MLE for two years, I would jump at it.
I still think that Fish has a couple of years left in his tank, assuming that all goes well with his daughter and he is of a mind to play, which is still seems like. I would also guess right now that he would sign for less than what he was getting in Utah, although he may want to sign with somebody in the East so as to not hurt the Jazz. Derek is that kind of guy. I think Kobe still has very positive feelings for Fish, especially as a clutch player, although I thought Derek was too reticent and reluctant at times when asked to comment regarding Kobe. Anyway, wherever he ends up, I wish Derek the best and will keep his daughter and family in my prayers. I have learned a lot more about prayers this year, as many of you know.

Character counts.
And Derek Fisher has the highest character.
It is not only about winning. It is about winning with class.
There is more to life than a championship and money as he shows.
Buying a championship is easy.
Winning a championship is hard.
If the other guys are better than you, and you win this is a real
championship.

hariyahu:
You’ve been on a great streak of trade insights. Good thinking, man. I sure hope Mitch is reading this. It may be his best hope of surviving another year at his job. lol.
First, you are right that the Bulls renewed interest in Chris Mihm has got to be great news for the Lakers. Funny how, even with his expiring contract, nobody out there is inquiring about Kwame but they are about Mihm. I like Chris Mihm but I also love the idea of re-signing Mihm for 3 years at $5M and then trading him for Chris Duhon (3.2M) and Thabo Sefolosha ($1.8M).
Second, I love your idea of a three team deal where the Lakers get Ron Artest ($8.5M), the Kings get Andre Nocioni (est $8.0M), and the Bulls get Chris Mihm (est $5.0M) and Brian Cook ($3.5M) – No need to include Vujacic to match salaries. It’s a little unbalanced at small forward since we re-signed Luke for $6.0M and still have Vlade on the books for $5.0M, but I think Artest and his defense and intensity are worth it.
You could also use the Bulls interest in Mihm and doing a sign-and-trade with Nocioni to put together deals for other players. Maybe the Bobcats would like to swap Gerald Wallace for Andres Nocioni? Maybe the Sonics might be interested in Rashard Lewis for Andres Nocioni? The key is that Paxton has always had a high opinion of Mihm and is obviously looking to do a sign-and-trade deal for Nocioni if he gets offers greater than $6.0M.
Opportunity is knocking, Mitch. Please answer.

All the best to the Fisher family.
And, here's hoping he rejoins the Laker family as well...
Does anyone think we can trade Crittenton + 1 to the Clippers for Maggette? They need a PG and Maggette and Kobe are tight.
PG: Fisher / Farmar
SG: Kobe / Evans
SF: Maggette / Walton
PF: Turiaf / Radmanovic
C: O'Neal / Bynum
That is a very solid, tough core, offensively and defensively, especially with Fisher and Turiaf. Maggette will get to the line 8+ times per game. O'Neal can handle himself in the paint against anyone in the league. And, Kobe is Kobe (even if that includes being a crybaby).
If we have to appease Kobe, I think grabbing Fisher, Maggette, and O'Neal will be more than enough - probably three of his closest friends in the league right now...

D-Fish,
Take care of business. Family first. We support you all the way.
Hopefully the youth of the league is taking notes: priorities, obligation and dedication. Derek has always been a gleaming example of what is right about a professional athlete. Too bad a guy like this only gets ink when the going gets rough for him and his family.
Kobe,
I hope you're taking notes too. All that time around Derek, i wish some of his class and character would have rubbed off.

In the midst of all the bantering back and forth about deals to be done, free agents to be signed and draft picks to be made, it's easy to lose sight of what is truly important. I think we should all just leave the talk about D-Fish coming back to LA alone - that is absolutely irrelevant right now in his life. He is doing what he must, and the rest of us need to back off and wish he and his family the best of health and happiness. It appears that many are doing just that.
God-speed Derek

Hey Da' Fish,
Come back to LA with your daughter and I would like to recommend you one of the best cancer hospital in the world - City of Hope at Duarte, CA. That is not a promo but backed-up by facts of survival rate with this deadly disease. Bring your daughter there and you will be relieved from all worries.
I think Fish, you're the missing link and our theraphy that will end all Laker troubles. You will bridge the gap between the old man Jerry and the angry Kobe and once you join the Lakers, KG will follow. Meanwhile. take a vacation but don't go too far, to San Francisco or Salt Lake City. If Jerry Buss can give Walton $30M, I don't see why he cannot give you a portion of that after making that 3 within 0.4 of a second. Your NBA career started here and it is just fitting and proper that it should also end in LA with Kobe.
Our prayers for your family and ur daughter to be free from any kind of diseases.

Fish represents the best in a professional athlete- great character, hard working, humble, and a great performer under great pressure. Interviews with him are some of the best due to his candid nature and articulate manner. With the Lakers he was a good distributor and shooter and, while he was a little slow on defense, he was that essential hustler that every defense needs. We miss him . . . we wish him the best . . . he reminds us of what once was and, hopefully, what can be again in Lakerland. Character counts.

My wife and I send good wishes and prayers for you, Tatum, and your family. I truly believe your absence from the lakers was felt in so many intangible ways. You never complained, just showed up with your lunch pail and went to work, giving us your all. You probably were the voice of reason to Kobe that he did not get to hear much of this past year. You have the right perspective, brother: God, family, then everything else are your priorities ( those "WWJD" wristbands you wear did not go unnoticed).
Wherever you go, you have my family rooting for yours!

Putting the seriousness of Fish's situation aside and focusing on the mundane for a moment, Fish coming to the Lakers is entirely the wrong move for the Lakers. Focus on building for championships starting with the 2009/2010 season. The window for San Antonio, Dallas, and Phoenix will be closed or closing and the Lakers' cap situation will be great. Trade old for young. Over the next 12 to 18 months, Kobe, Lamar, and Kwame should all be traded for draft picks and young stars. Beware fading stars with bloated contracts (e.g., Kidd, Garnett, O'Neal, etc.). Don't try to resurrect yesterday, build for tomorrow.

Man taliq, you’re tough lately. Look, I’m being very, very modest with myself. All I’ll say is that I’m doing just fine and that I’ve taken full advantage of the “sky’s the limit” philosophy. After all, this is the Unites States when anybody can make something of themselves by working hard and taking full advantage of what the country has to offer. LOL. You take care.

Ouch. Man, I’ve must have said something to really piss you off. I apologize for whatever I did. You mad cuz laker management is not giving kobe, the crybaby, what he wants……..a trade? Maybe your mad cuz Zeke traded for Zach “Big Lazy#2" or "Give me the Ball” Randolf?

What are you talking “buying” a championship? Champions are made up of a collection of guys working towards the same goal, not a one-man show trying too hard to prove he’s better than Michael Jordan.

“Kobe, I hope you're taking notes too. All that time around Derek, i wish some of his class and character would have rubbed off.”
Why do you think Fish left?? Shaq-era was over and Kobe-era began. That’s why a person with “class” and “character” left LA. Hell, look around everyone left except for George and now he's gone too. All that remains for the Shaq-era lakers is kobe the bleep.
DEREK FISHER,
Best of luck and best wishes for you and your daughter. I’m happy to see that you won your championship playing under the leadership of Shaq. I’m sorry that you were unable to win 3 more because of kobe’s selfishness. Please consider playing for LA once kobe leaves for free agency or is traded away to Timbuktu.

The Ferrari should slow down a bit wait for the new and improved HUMMER! Kobe should like the 20 year old Bynum by OCT. Reports are Bynum is working out really hard to get Kobe's approval. Now that is dedication and for him to work out with Chris MIHM, that tells us Laker fans that they don't mind playing together and helping each other get better. We need these two Centers work ethic and their persistence to stay and play alongside Kobe should be recognized as inportant to the Lakers team chemistry.
