One doubts if "Bucks Blog" would have this much material to work with
The hoops universe now has something to distract from the Kobe trade scenarios- KG trade scenarios. While the four team, "This justifies all the time I spend on the Trade Machine instead of watching the kids!" mega deal fell through, apparently the Lakers and T-Wolves are still exploring a deal the old fashioned, two-team way. It's hardly a slam dunk, since there questions as to whether or not the Lakers have the chips to meet Minnesota's needs and whether or not Wolves GM Kevin McHale would sooner parachute with a bed sheet onto the 5 Freeway before sending Garnett to L.A. Then there is the matter of Kobe. ESPN's Ric Bucher reported yesterday that even a deal that nets KG wouldn't change Kobe's "trade me" stance. True or not, it may not matter. Bulls GM John Paxson has said the odds of Kobe heading to Chicago are slim, at least if the Lakers want a prime package in return.

no pacers and jermaine o'neal.
Minny gets a starting line up: o'bryant, odom, j richardson, luke ridnour--that eam with r. davis, juwan howard, randy foye...wow thats a ten times better team
The sonics get bynum and durant to go against oden and roy...and could resign rashard lewis...wow explosive durant, lewis, wilcox, byum in two years?
warriors turn J-Richardson into Ray Allen...he makes the 3 pointer, and would be a siiiick backcourt with Baron Davis
Lakers get Garnett---to go with Kobe...somehow the Lakers arent promising as those teams...
no need to swap draft picks or anything
Dude..if only GMs had any balls to pull off a trade like this..which would drastically benefit all of these teams.

If it happens, it is a dream come true. If it doesn't happen, at least we tried our best to make it happen rather not to dream at all. Xodus,
"The fact that you expect Kobe to have undying loyalty to the Lakers is unrealistic and selfish of you."
I don't think he should have undying loyalty to the Lakers, I think both sides are better off with a divorce. We're not going to win with Kobe here, especially with the supporting cast he has and the way our payroll is structured and the trade assets we have. However, I think if he waives his no-trade clause and we can get the best deal possible, everyone wins.
As for Kobe maximizing earnings and success, the Lakers have given him the opportunity to win THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS and by the end of this contract over $200 million dollars. At what point have they not provided him almost everything that an athlete can want? Kobe tasted success early on but that doesn't change the fact that he has tasted it.
EastCoastJessie,
In the early 90's after Magic, Worthy, Kareem, Scott and Coop were all gone, they still had 17,505 filling the Fabulous Forum and in less than 10 years had the next era and a new building. The Lakers will go on without Kobe Bryant, I can guarantee you that.

I usually do not comment my opinions in post but in this case I am willing to make an exception. I have been a Lakers fan for nearly thirty years and over the years my desire to watch them as increased immensely. Therefore, I would like to say that I can not believe this organization is allowing this selfish primadona to terrorize them. The last time I checked, the Lakers (the Buss’) write and sign the checks not Kobe. In his latest tirade (err… tantrum), this knuckle head has besmirched his team mates by suggesting that the Lakers should have traded young talent (Bynum) for old talent (Kidd). Because in his opinion, this move would have was a no brainer. According to the infant, he is a student of the game. But I contend that he must not have attended class at all. History has shown that Kidd does not function well in the offense that the Lakers run (the triangle). This experiment was attempted in Dallas and it failed miserably. So miserable in fact, that they traded Kidd for three magic beans. In addition, Kidd ran off a successful coach (Byron Scott) because he expected Kidd to run the offense as prescribed and Kidd complained. Now he is whining because he can’t make to the finals. I believe, the Lakers should not succumb to the infant’s tantrums. They should inform the moron that he has one of two choices: Play and shut his trap and opt out in two years or sit out for two years and opt out. Either way the Lakers would win. Scenario one would allow them to get a return on the investment (headache). Scenario two would bring peace and harmony to the locker room (no one likes him, he sucks a person) and most likely a cohesive team that would play better. Each of theses solutions would allow the Lakers to keep their young talent (Lamar and Bynum) and keep them from acquiring salary cap crippling contracts of shoddy players or locker room cancers. Besides they already have a player that fits two out of three… KOBE the salary cap crippling locker room cancer.

You unloaded Shaq, kept Kobe, and accured a mountain of markers, for which you are still paying in multiple ways. Sending Bynum packing (among all players on your roster) will be the grand finale to your poor act.
So be it. Why don't you just send him our way, straight across for Bibby or Artest?

Andrew,
I think you're way off on that analysis of this situation. Dr. Buss is esentially calling Kobe's bluff by making this trade. It's genius. Let's say the worst possible scenario happens after the trade is completed. First thing is, the trade is done. That tells Kobe and the fans that Dr. Buss wants to win now and is willing to trade an important piece of the future to do so. Kobe doesn't care and gives KG the cold shoulder. Now Kobe is truly exposed. He would be committing career suicide by not playing his heart out with possibly the best, and most loyal teammate in the league. Also, KG is in a contract year, Kobe is one year away from that. The worst possible scenario for Dr. Buss and the Lakers is that they pay the tax once and let KG walk and trade Kobe. The Lakers are trading possibly two big contracts in echange one big expiring contract. Good deal for the Lakers. Bad deal for Kobe (provided he doesn't come around).

DallasBasketball.com has learned that the Mavs have quietly laid the groundwork necessary to be bidders in the Kevin Garnett Sweepstakes, with a backup plan that could land an impact lottery-level player in Thursday’s NBA Draft.
“We know what’s going on out there,’’ Mavs president Donnie Nelson tells DB.com. “If there is a way to get something like that done, we’ll probe it.’’
-----------------------
From what we can gather, Dallas has done more than probe. NBA sources say Minnesota has been very clear in talks what they would require from the Mavs: A draft pick between No. 3 and No. 7 overall; a package of expiring contracts; and a future young star.

And if we were to trade for KG whos to say that Kobe still won't opt out. If we keep Kobe and he still opt out who are we left with? The LA Timberwolves. Remenber- Bynum is young so he will have his growing pains and he is being trained by one of the greatest centers of all time.

PhxLkrFan,
Very good point. Again, contrary to what most writers are saying, I feel the Lakers have the leverage over Kobe in this situation. Chris Sheridan of ESPN states that if Kobe sits out he gets the leverage back, but I disagree. I don't think his image could stand that hit, on top of what it would do to his relationship with his fans and his sponsors.
I guess if we make the trade and both Kobe and KG opt out, we enter the Lebron, Wade, Melo free agency year with $45 million in cap space. Not bad.

Generic 1,
I really enjoyed your post at the end of the other thread. The thing that really gets me about this whole thing is the idea that the world ends if Kobe goes. The show will go on,everybody will adjust and get behind whoever is here.Whatever is going to happen and should or shouldnt happen, the keep Kobe at all costs perspective baffles me the most.
Nobody seems to have mentioned the possibility that we get a decent trade and have a decent ...perhaps better or likeable team..Somethign needs to be done to at least make it look like someone different is calling the shots to restore fans faith,PJ might be a casualty....I could go on forever.
But the thing you picked up on generic is the sense of confusion. Is Kobe a bad guy or a good guy? is Phil doing a decent job, what would the team be like without the injuries? how about mitch?
pain the a$$!!!!!
Posted by: Kiwi | June 26, 2007 at 10:50 AM
Anyone notice that there is an extraordinary amount of high-priced superstars all wanting to be moved? The thing is, none of these guys has been able to win on their own, what makes them think they can do it somewhere else with a team that's going to be gutted by their arrival? And how big of an ass is Isaiah Thomas for buying out all those big expiring contracts? He could have had his pick of any of these guys!!
Right now is the perfect time to start a rebuilding process in the new NBA and let these overpriced, overhyped All-Stars make it to the second round and fizzle out. When they're all 35 making $25 million a year our young guns will be on top of the world.
Posted by: Andrew Z | June 26, 2007 at 10:57 AM
I can't take reading the trade rumors any more. KB & KG would obviously be phenomenal. Honestly, at this point I think I'd rather have KG than KB...'cause KB has got some serious making up to do (I know it's not all just his fault, but he's been a little beeyatch lately).
Those of you out there talking about getting Chauncey...maybe we coud get Marion & Artest too!!
How's that for a "small ball" starting five:
PG- Chauncey Billups
SG- KB
SF- Shawn Marion
PF- Ron Artest
C - KG
The speculation is out of control. We all just need to put down the crack pipe and take a slow unadulterated breath.
We'll just have to see how this all plays out.
Never trade Turiaf.
I miss Eddie Jones too.

A third source would only say “it‘s very slim” when asked if there remained a possibility that Garnett could end up with the Lakers this off-season.
Taylor and Timberwolves vice-president of basketball operations Kevin McHale ended the talks with L.A. after determining the Lakers couldn’t offer enough in return, according to the sources. The Timberwolves are expected to continue seeking a deal for Garnett, and will likely focus their attention again on Boston and possibly Phoenix.

One thing everyone forgets about the 4 teams involved in the trade: Boston, Lakers, Indiana, Minnesota. THEY ALL SUCK LAST YEAR. 3 teams didn't make the playoffs and 1(Lakers were the 7th seed and a .500 team) What is there to lose for anyone? Another year of mediocrity. Do the trade. It benefits everyone.
Boston: Paul Pierce and JO - Good in the weak east
Minnesota: High Draft Picks, Expiring Contracts, Starting Over which is what they have been doing everyyear with those signings.
Lakers: Kobe and KG
Boston: Odom, Bynum, Granger

Francesco,
I took hate to see the Lakers give up on Bynum, who will probably have a stellar NBA career. After all, he'd be the #3 pick in the draft this year.
The Lakers - if they get KG - are trading their future for a 3 to 4 year window of opportunity for the Kobe/KG tandem to win a championship or two. Can it be done? Yes. Is it worth it? Probably yes.
The only other option is to trade Kobe, get really really young, suck for a year, get a great draft pick, hire a new coach (Michael Cooper?) and rebuilt. Not gonna happen.
Posted by: Laker Seth | June 26, 2007 at 11:10 AM

TaosHum,
I can only hope that the talks have ended and that Kobe maybe was willing to stay if KG came and now he's just going to be even more pissed and will chirp up again about wanting to be traded. Maybe the Lakers will finally realize that trading Kobe is the best thing for the franchise and Kobe will waive off his no-trade clause.
I still think we can get into the lottery this year and get a really good young talent.
Posted by: Andrew Z | June 26, 2007 at 11:15 AM
If the Lakers can't get KG and Kobe was still saying he wanted out if the Lakers got KG anyway, then now it would seem the best move would be to try and move Kobe before the draft. We're not going to get equal value but... if Kobe is really going to sit out next year then... what's the point? Accept reality, build around Bynum, Odom and Farmar, bring in some new blood and see where it goes. The alternative is to enter next year with very few changes and Kobe refusing to play. What's the point? Seriously... The only last ditch effort could be to OVERPAY to get Jermaine ONeal, then we're stuck with him if/when Kobe refuses to play. LOL! I mean... WHAT is the point in pushing this any further? Lose/Lose but at least if they act now, they can start rebuilding NOW vs. losing an entire year praying "something" changes...

I expect every team to now throw out every scenerio there is to keep the Lakers from receiving Garnett. But the bottom line, Garnett will go to the team of his choice.
If it is the Lakers, the Lakers will win this battle. Again every conversation I have heard from Glen Taylor state we will take care of Garnett ,it is the least we can do as an organization for Kevin being so loyal. And When I hear that Glen called Jerry to confirm and get his assurance that Buss will extend the contract, I have to hope it is a done deal. I am just waiting to see when Kobe finally speaks out that signing KG will make him happy and back off the trade demands. If we get that, chances are good in Laker Land.

Posted by: wow | June 26, 2007 at 11:29 AM
Andrew Z,
Does winning three championships mean he has to stop wanting to be part of a winning situation? I agree that trading Kobe may be the best avenue for both sides--though I would recant if KG were to come on board--but I don't fault Kobe for wanting a change of scenery after seeing the Lakers make weak attempts at adding pieces to the team. The Lakers have made a half hearted effort to rebuild and a half hearted effort to build for the future, leaving fans and Kobe himself in a quandry.
Posted by: Xodus | June 26, 2007 at 11:30 AM
Well, this will tell us what the Lakers really think of Bynum. If he would, in fact, be the number 3 pick in the draft this year, they should not make this trade; it's not worth it.
Posted by: exhelodrvr | June 26, 2007 at 11:31 AM
You should have shipped the Saint out last summer, before he damaged himself (and thus the Lakers) even further. You could have had a team of decent veterans and a lot of young developing talent who would be preparing to start their second season together, right now. That would be worth talking about.
Instead, you are more preoccupied than ever (and that's saying a lot) with the "Mamba Distraction" which is not helpful to anyone, except perhaps the Saint. My God, what am I saying! Would the blog survive? Would the Lakers survive?
The answer is an unequivocal NO!
They would thriive!

Weave-man... I don't know that Atlanta would bite on that 3-way - they're trying to get in on Garnett themselves (using both their #3 and their #11 plus players). I guess Dallas is making a run too. I could see us maybe trading up our 19 to the 76'ers for their 12 (they have three picks in the first round)... don't know what they'd want us to toss in. I don't see a lot of other teams helping us out on a higher draft pick. Do you think the #12 (plus the package we've already floated) would be enought for the T-Wolves? They've already got the #7.
Jeff - yeah, Travis Knight! Loved that guy, a foul waiting to happen. He went over to Europe for a while after the Knicks were done with him.

Xodus,
I don't blame Kobe for wanting to continually win, he's a competitor and that's a good thing to want to win. And who's to say that the Lakers didn't make an attempt to get better talent around him, but teams just didn't want to give up what they had for what we were offering? Since the Jason Kidd-Bynum thing is a hot topic due to the video, let's just look at that. We would have either had to give up Lamar or Kwame along with Bynum to make it work. Kobe-Kidd wouldn't have been any better than Kobe-LO, and if you trade Kwame AND Bynum in that deal either LO or Turiaf would have been our starting center with Brian Cook as the back-up. How would that team have been able to compete with the Suns or Spurs? And at the times other players like Baron Davis, Artest, and Boozer were rumored to be on the table, they weren't very desirable for either mental, physical, or contractual reasons. Hindsight is 20-20 when evaluating their level of play, but at the time I thought all those trades were good ones to pass on.
The biggest mistake the front office made was taking on Brian Grant's contract in the Shaq deal. The three years of being strapped with that thing killed us. But piling on now and trying to patch things up like nothing ever happened is a waste. Both parties should go their separate ways.

I’d actually be interested to see if kob can get along with KG? more drama?

“A last question for you. If You're comparing Kobe's leadership to others, than shouldn't you be comparing the team he's leading to the other team? You can't overcome a team with 3 all-star caliber players if you've got a bunch of scrubs can you?”
fair enough question. I would direct you to the Leastern Conference with LBJ or the Golden State Warriors where Stephen, the Malcontent#2, Jackson basically said that he’d die for Baron Davis. I’ve never heard any player any time give that type of devotion to kob. I get rhetoric that “kobe’s the best player on the planet” or “I’d love to play with kobe”, but words are cheap to me. action is more important.
“re: why hobbit? It's a moniker from my role playing days. I played a hobbit who became a mage. Hand-Eye coordination is a *MUST* when you're stealing someone blind OR when you're throwing lightning bolts.”

My favorite memory of Travis is during a regular season game (either in 98 or 99) when he was actually being very uncharictiscally clutch in the fourth quarter (as well as actually being on the floor in the fourth) and basically won the game for the Lakers- Chick was doing his refridgerator line and (I'll never forget this) and said "Travis Knight is jiggling!"
I laughed, I cried, and it sounded like Stu was trying not to bust up on the air.

If the T-wolves don't make that trade, that should tell all of you "Lamar Odom is really an All-Star but no one knows it, Bynum is going to be an All-Star" types what the truth is. Because if that was the case, those two plus Kwame's contract make this deal a no-brainer from the aspect of the T-wolves.
