Phil Jackson: Prop Comic

April 12, 2007 |  7:31 pm

I'll say this for Phil Jackson.  I've been around a reasonable variety of teams for a reasonable amount of year and today was the first time I've ever seen a coach make use of visual aids while talking to the press.  Asked what he made of Kwame Brown hinting that his ankle might not be healed by the playoffs, Phil calmly reached into his pocket, produced a white hankie and waved it as if it were a tiny flag.  "Am I the last in America that has a handkerchief," joked Jackson.  But seriously folks, Phil feels the situation is one "he's going to have to manage to help us.  If he wants to help us, it's really important."

So in other words, he should just get out there and give it a whirl?  Yes, no and maybe, all at once.  Jackson "weighs in with this carefully," aware of the dilemma injured athletes face.  "Am I hurting myself and my career?  That's a big part of a reason for them to play or not to play.  You have the Willis Reed situation in front of you as player that comes out and plays in the most critical game of the career of a franchise and literally, his career is limited for the next two years.  And over in three.  You have that type of example ahead of you in those situations and you wonder, can I be hurting my career and my play?  And no player or agent wants a player to do that.  And no coach does either."

So is Phil expecting Kwame to pull a "whatchu talking about, Willis?"  No, in part because "he couldn't do the same thing for this team that Willis Reed could do.  But we are expecting him to give it a try, give it a go if his ankle's stable enough."  As for Kwame's take that he might not be able to help the team in terms of pure performance, Phil said that would be his call.  "As a coach, if he's hurting the team, then the coach takes him out and says, "Thanks for the effort, but I think we can go somewhere else."

As for Kwame, he's now back to wearing his walking boot when he's not getting treatment.  "Which is terrible," said Kwame with a shake of the head.  That said, "if it's gonna help my foot calm down, I'll wear two of them."

In other news, Vlad Radmanovic is ready and able to play tonight.  The amount of minutes he'll actually receive, however, remains up in the air.  "I'm confident that I'll put him on the roster,"noted Jackson.  From there, it'll be kind of touch and go.  What will be the determining factors?  "How much (the Clippers) pack it in.  They really packed the game in against us last time.  Kobe was faced with three or four defenders every time he went through the lane.  Radmanovic gives us that option of a three point shooter."  Jackson does like what he's seen from Vlad during practice.  "He's been working hard.  He's in great shape.  He's got live legs and he's shooting the ball well."  There are still concerns about his shoulder having enough strength to hold up, but all in all, Jackson was complimentary of Vlad's attempts at a late second act.  And maybe it's possible.  Jackson pointed out how back in the day, Brian Williams (otherwise known as Bison Dele) joined the Bulls with nine games left and ended up a key component in winning a title.

I'm a laker fan in Houston. I want you to send this word to Phil Jackson that, 2-0 is nothing they can win the series if only he does this.
1. Let Evans guide Nash through out the game because he is faster.
2. Start Cook as a shooter.
3. They should guide closer, do not leave them too open.
4. They should not slow the game down

If they do these four things they will win the series.
I have seen it and it going to happen if they do it
If l have Phil Jackson phone # l will tell him myself.

I am watching the nba finals and when I looked at the game I see the celtics playing 48 minutes and to be honest that is the way they played all year long. Don't know if anyone notice but if I am not wrong the wizards swept them this year and if you take a look at the wizards, they play the same style just as the celtics 48 minutes. The lakers are far better than the celtics on offense but what the lakers problem is that first they are not playing 48 minutes and from what I am seeing they have laspes of an average of 4 to 5 minutes a quarter and that is when the defense of the celtics look so good when to me they are average. Detroit has a better defense than the celtics to me they just play 48 minutes and that will make up for any mistakes or offensive struggles that occur over the course of 48 minutes great coach doc rivers from getting to his team at the start of training camp to play 48 minutes. The lakers have the shooters, but what makes me upset is how they are not pounding the ball inside because of their length. IF THE LAKERS STAY CALM AND POUND THE BALL INSIDE THAT WILL OPEN UP KOBE AND THE REST OF THE OUTSIDE GAME. TRUST THAT IF THE LAKERS CAN PLAY 48 MINUTES, POUND THE BALL INSIDE TO ODUM AND GASOL, AND KOBE BE MORE AGRESSIVE AND RELENTLESS OF TRYING TO GET TO THE BASKET, THE LAKERS WILL BE ALRIGHT AND THEY WILL WIN THREE IN A ROW BUT THEY HAVE TO PLAY HARD FOR 48 MINUTES.
