Live from Staples- Lakers vs. Suns
They've done it through three games, but can the Lakers manage to shut down Eric Piatkowski four times in a row? We'll find out. I'll have the first quarter.
BK
Unlike Thursday, when there were a lot of late arrivals, everyone's in the building at tip time, and they're loud. No shortage of atmosphere in the house today. Only bad thing? That horrible ABC Sky Cam thing they use to provide the worst angles in basketball broadcast history is whizzing back and forth in front of me.
11:40- L.O. picks up a loose ball foul, then James Jones drills a three. A fine start. Maybe they're only good when they go down by 17. Amare starts the game fronting Kwame.
Kobe gets the Lakers on the board.
10:00- I understand Kwame thought he was fouled, but Stoudamire finished that dunk while 54 was pkicng up his headband. Not good. Bell picks up a foul on Kobe. One early on Dodom, one early on Bell. Needless to say, a second early foul on either changes the complexion of this game a ton.
6:49- Unfortunately, it's L.O. who picks up the foul, and has to sit down. Mo Evans in the game for him. Kobe finds Kwame down low, with great position on Stoudamire. Easy bucket. Timeout on the floor.
Last Phoenix bucket was Marion slipping instead of setting a hard pick. Early on, it looks like the Suns are making the adjustment to the Lakers pick and roll defense from Game 3 by not setting as many screen rolls. They've already sprung Nash a couple times on penetration, and there just slipped Marion through. The Lakers will have to figure out how to respond.
4:25- Suns 25- Lakers 17 on a Stoudamire dunk, off an offensive rebound for the Suns. That's something that cannot happen. The Laekrs can't afford to give the Suns any extra possessions. Nice tip in by Kwame off a Luke miss to get a couple back.
3:35- Nash penetrates straight through the middle on Farmar. Smush hops up off the bench, to take his place. That's a couple times that Nash has done that to him. Basically, the Suns aren't giving the Lakers a chance to set up and be aggressive defensively.
2:40- Terrible play by Bynum on the Nash penetration. He didn't step out on Nash, he didn't pick up Stoudamire. Basically, he was in no man's land. No help there.
1:28- Timeout on the floor, and the Laker Girls are dancing to Respect. Not a lot of verve in the routine, either. I don't care for it. This is the playoffs. Average will not do.
END OF THE FIRST- Suns 33- Lakers 28. Not a terrible quarter, considering L.O. barely played with two fouls and Kwame left with back trouble. But the Suns have clearly made the adjustment to the Lakers pick and roll defense, more or less by not using the pick and roll. They're setting up for a lot of one on one penetration, then having guys move off the ball, using their speed to put Lakers on their own little islands. Once the the help is coming, they're putting hte Lakers on their heels, and then finding the open guy. But they clearly caught the Lakers anticipating the screen early in the game, nad burned them more than once. Hopefully things get better in the second. AK will have it.
Second Quarter
Some of you may remember that during last year's playoffs, we were seated in front of a woman who, while we admire her fanship, has a parrot-squawky loud voice and has a tendancy to cheer on players currently on the bench. She's behind us again, and is either confusing Shammond Williams for Smush, or simply has a hunch Smush can make something happen from the bench.
9:50 - A triple from Evans and Kobe's two sunk freebies (combined with a couple defensive stands) have the Lakers back on top 36-35. Bell looks to get the Suns back on top, but Bynum swats him and forces a Laker won jump ball. One possesion later, Kobe gets on the board yet again. His 14th (and counting) point. Lakers up 38-37.
Time out - They just put Vlad on the jumbotron. A smattering of boos. I guess it's not a snowboard enthusiast crowd.
7:30 - Another block for Bynum. That's his second in limited minutes. The swat brings the crowd to its feet, but unfortunately, they're soon sitting after yet another Phoenix layup.
6:20 - LO misses a three one possession after Shammond finds his triple blocked by (and this is not a typo) Steve Nash. Too many L.A. jumpers, especially ones not coming inside-out. This is a bad habit to fall back into.
4:39 - Amare's dunk comes way too easy. Kwame's effort wasn't big enough, neither in disrupting the pass nor bodying up Stoudemire. By the way, Amare's already got a double-double this half.
3:19 - Sasha Vujacic slips through some Phoenix bodies- He's skinny like that- and snags Shawn Marion's inbound. Layup. Between him and Kobe, that's 4 points in a blink of an eye. There's your "07 Seconds or Less!!!
2:40 - Luke alleys to L.O.'s oop. You don't see a lot of that in Laker Land. Fun stuff.
1:47 - Amare muscles his way into the paint, drawing the converted "And One" foul on Walton. That's Stoudemire's 15th point. But Kwame responds with his own "And One." As the crowd chants Kwame's name yet again, BK jokes with me, "Don't distract him while he's shooting free throws." Thankfully, Kwame defies the odds in the face of extra noise, draining one from the stripe.
28.8 - Marion's slashing layup after Barbosa's triple increases the Suns lead to 7. You can't let up on these guys for a second. There's just no resting.
Luke's buzzer-beating trey attempt falls short, so the Lakers go into the locker room down 58-51. The Purple and Gold are playing reasonably well, but can't quite seem to get over the hump. The Suns are out and running more than last game, not to mention outrebounding the hell out of the Lakeshow (25-16). Plus, Nash is a much bigger factor. Dude's got 15 assists this HALF. Unless the Lakers figure out a way to slow him down, there's more dimes coming, guaranteed. We'll see how they adjust. Back in the third (with BK).
THIRD QUARTER-
Three minutes in, and the lead is pushed to 13 for Phoenix. If the Lakers aren't careful, this game is going to get away from them very quickly. They can't push pace just because they're down.
8:30- Bell tries to draw a charge on L.O., who slips around him and picks up the foul. Could have used the finish, though, since he missed the first free throw. There's no way the Lakers are going to get back in this game if they don't hit their free throws. Suns by 9, 66-57. I take that back. Nash hits an open three, as nobody came out to challenge.
Can't happen.
6:00- Suns by 12. Lakers aren't getting to the rack, and the Suns are slowly starting to pick them apart. LAL needs to generate some solid possessions offensively, then get a couple stops. But it won't happen if they can't get more rhythm in Phoenix's end. They have to get more play in the post, or if that doesn't work, penetrate. Too much perimeter play. Next three minutes could decide whether or not the Lakers will guarantee a Game 6. If they can't get it to within 8 or so into the fourth, it's going to be a very, very tall order.
Just showed Magic on the Jumbotron. Somehow, he got hooked up with some really good seats.
3:03- Kobe to the line with a chance to cut it to eight, 75-67. And he makes them. Those were his fourth and fifth FTs of the day.
Terrible play bo Kobe, who gets caught in the air and turns it over leading to an easy Marion dunk. There have ben a few times when he's been stuck on an iso. Generally, the offense just isn't running well today. Too much standing around, too much Kobe iso, too little ball and player movement.
END OF THE THIRD-
That jumper by Stoudamire was a killer, pushing the lead back to 14. If the Lakers can come back from this, it'll be one of the greatest in team history. If they can do it AND get tacos for the crowd, it will be among the greatest in league history. AK will try to bring home a winner.
Fourth Qaurter
11:40 - Evans hits a three, a clean shot created by Kobe penetrating inside, then kicking. More of that's needed if the Lakers are gonna take from behind the arc.
10:48 - While the previous Kobe offensive foul was definitely the right call, unless they explained something during the telecast replay that I didn't see, I'm not quite sure why Kwame was called for the same.
9:57 - Beautiful reverse layup by Kobe, drawing the foul to boot. And hey Laker teammates... Notice how Kobe SANK his free throw? It's not a horrible strategy to consider.
8:56 - It was very disappointing to see Evans miss after finding himself one on one with Nash deep in the post. Evans has so much muscle on "Mr. 21 (and counting) Assists," that's a mismatch that should amiunt to more than an airballed layup.
7:10 - Shammond takes a page out of the Phoenix playbook, slicing and dicing his way through the lane, and set up for a layup on a beauty pass from LO. Wanna know how I'm sure it's from Phoenix's playbook? Because Boris Diaw did the exact same thing on the next possession.
4:20 - After Smush's three, the next Laker possession is an LO layup. The lead's now down to 15. Can the Lakers make a game of it in 4 minutes. Crazier things have happened. After all, Jamie Kennedy still has a movie career.
2:22 - Shammond drains a three, but with an 11 point deficit and only 2 minutes left, this could be tough... especially when Marion drains an 11-footer with nary a hand in his face on the next possession.
1:02 - Even from a section up, you can see that LO's in an crapload of pain right now. He's playing through some stuff (my guess, more issues with the elbow).
As the game's final seconds tick away, Shammond drives the lane and hits a layup. No good, but frankly, unless it was a 14-point basket, who cares? Suns take this bad boy 113-100, but it really wasn't even that close. Things went quickly astray in the third and never got any better from there. Can't expect much with all those defensive breakdowns. Once again, thanks for dropping by. We'll hopefully see you again on Friday.

Big play on both ends by Walton. First, hitting the triple, then poking away the ball from Stoudemire, disrupting the potential easy dunk.
I was a little concerned Kwame wasn't aware of the shot clock., but he proved me wrong. Nice little baby hook over Amare.

Mo Evans hits his first shot, which I consider a very good sign. Evans is about as streaky/"all or nothing" an offensive player as they come, and he's usually hot or cold from the outset.

I don't know how much longer they can keep L.O. on the bench. With this lineup, it's going to be tough to get the ball down low and too many outside shots is not a good recipe. Of course, if Evans keeps drilling threes, I guess it's okay (haha).

i guess kwame took note to the 'WHOOP THAT TRICK' clip during film session
hahaha...i just made it funny
Posted by: CBuck | April 29, 2007 at 01:38 PM
Lakers offensive discipline has stayed pretty good. Not too many shots early or being forced into bad shots late in the clock. And just about everything is funneling towards the hoop. Needs to stay that way. Its' the best way to slow Phoenix down.

Posted by: Disgruntled, Frustrated Laker Fan | April 29, 2007 at 01:38 PM
Stoudemire is a bigger pussy cat. Kwame barely grazed his temple and he crumpled like he has been fouled hard. He is afraid of Kwame that's much i know. After his boasts of what he'll do to Kwame.

Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 29, 2007 at 01:42 PM
Here's the problem- the Lakers are playing hard, they're playing pretty well, and they're into halftime down by seven. Phoenix is doing a much better job of making the Lakers pay for mistakes today than they did on Thursday. Not a great sign, unfortunately. But there are still 24 minutes to go. Enough time to turn it around.
Soft foul call on Walton, I think.

Nash 15 assist and the Suns are leading by 7.
Walton missing 3-9 shooting and 5 turnovers.
This is what I'm talking about how in a precise series this guy isn't going to cut it.

Refs are GIVING this game to the Suns. It's not even funny, what are these calls? Thank God TNT is even flummoxed, NBA head office are you watching this s**t?
I look forward to Nash's suspension for the next game for that intentional foot to the crotch. That was equally as blatent as any elbow Kobe this year if not more so.

Doesn't matter BK. Imo we aren't playing the way we could...not 1 offensive rebound compared to last time...not much challenge on set shots, and dribble penetration, we're collapsing way too much. These are things we improved on last time, and aren't doing this time. We're also getting lulled into playing a fast game, that's not our game. We need to slow it down, WE NEED to get our head in the game and off the refs that suck.

Posted by: Voulnet | April 29, 2007 at 01:49 PM
My quick observations,
ABC especially Jon Barry and CO are in love with Nash. They might as well start a threesome or something.
Nash is a punk for kicking his legs out like that when he went for he layup.
The refs are really biased right now. They've blown four calls on Kobe alone. What about the ref touchin the ball inbound and making the wrong call just to let the suns keep the ball.
The lakers just have to play smarter on defense and stay aggresive on offense and maybe the calls will start to go our way.

BK,
"15 dimes for Nash, 16/12 for Stoudamire in the first half. That needs to change."
Despite that the Suns only lead by 7 points and who knows what the score would be if Walton had made those shots under the basket...not to mention the 5 turnovers.

Posted by: Michael Teniente | April 29, 2007 at 01:53 PM
Get Kwame out of there. He is just awful, not even attempting to move his feet or even raise an arm as players go by him at will. Bynum looked much better - or even Ronny, anybody except Kwame. He not only has hands of stone, his feet seem to stuck in quick sand.
It was heart warming to see Miami get swept in four games. The most disgraceful sweep in NBA history, considering how talent laden they are. I guess the refs decided not to bail them out this year as it looked mighty suspicious last year and maybe Stern felt that it wouldn't look good to just hand them another championship.
Posted by: Roger B | April 29, 2007 at 01:54 PM
I'm sending in my own video both Nash's kick and his elbow to Sasha's face myself, I don't trust the NBA to actually look at the tape.

Suns Fan,
Don't even try to compare the foul to Amare with the one to Kobe. Go back to your SUNS forum. First off, Amare got hit in the eye, which doesn't compare to Kobe potential ankle injury.
When the SUNS are on LAKERS home court they better expect a hard foul going to the lane.
Suns Fans = GET A LIFE and STOP POINTING FINGERS.

BK,
This is what I mean by us not playing our game. Sure they have a lot to do with that, but at the same time you have to question why we're taking early shots instead of doing what we did last time, and that is throw the ball in the paint and go from there. In and out...and we need to do a better job of seeing what they're forcing us to do, and do our own thing.

Faith-
The problem is when the Suns do a better job of denying the entry or sagging on penetration, the Lakers don't really have an answer. And then they're getting out of what they can do well. They don't really have the talent to throw a lot of different looks at the Suns for any stretch of time, and if the Suns play a little better- and they're doing it today- it's a tough order for the Lakers to win.

"With this laker team, it's all about defense. The other night they showed it...in this game it was too easy. We're not seeing it"
Defense? Nuff said.

Where's the trap?
Maybe they listened to Mike T, who said the double-team trap on Nash wasn't part of the plan.
Thanks, Mike T.

We're toast. Everything we do on offense seems forced, and we can't stop penetration anywhere. We need an unbelievable push right now.

I HATE THE SUNS LESS THAN THESE REFS!

Wow, great game by the refs. The Suns could've stayed at their hotel and still one this one.
Thanks NBA for providing perhaps the most inconsistent sports experience available on television.
I still look forward to Steve's suspension for the next game. There will be hell to pay if he's allowed to suit up.

Man, this is a remarkable test of faith for me.
Hard.
GO LAKERS!

I don't know why PJ expects to get back in a game (defensively) with Cookie, extended minutes for Smush...and Mo Evans punking up like this. I counted at least 3 plays where he gambled instead of played D like we're paying him to.

faith - that's the coaches fault!!

GAME OVER..refs suck ass...I can't believe it..oh well it's the NBA ...if something doesn't change..which I don't think nothing will improve..then it'll be over with in the desert..

The officiating sucks.
GO LAKERS!

Phil was outcoached AGAIN. That's THREE out of four games. It's desperation time now. Kobe needs to jack up about 10 three point attempts. Too late to slow the game down now.

MIKE T,
I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE ON THE BENCH HAS TO PLAY!
EVEN PHOENIX, A TEAM THAT RUNS NONSTOP DOES NOT GO AS DEEP AS WE'RE GOING ON OUR BENCH!

One big difference is that L.O. isn't in (he's back now). Without him in the game, the defense suffers big time, b/c the drop off between him and the guys who replace him is too big, whether it's trying to trap off the screen, or closing out on the boards.
