Game Thread - Lakers vs. Spurs
I said during the Bobcats game on Friday that I could see Vlad Radmanovic's DNP-CD become a regular thing. Today, he's starting. As usual, I have my finger on the pulse of everything "Lakers."
AK
First Quarter
6:10 - My heart races. I swear I hearing the call of "Manu Girl." Or maybe it's just the winds playing tricks on my fragile psyche. But either way, my head's on a swivel looking around.
5:42 - LO goes coast to coast off a rebound, using his off arm to shy away from Oberto and stretch in the layup. Things that's been missing from the Lakers of late?
4:23 - Ginobli gets away with a flagrant push-off against Bynum going for a loose ball, and right in front of the ref. Can't wait for the day to come when Andrew's not so young that such trangressions will likely slide every time. The stripes must be earned, I guess.
2:32 - Kobe pump fakes a few times, can't draw the bite (and foul) on Ginobli. So he just cans the jumper instead. Kinda reminds of that scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," when that guy keeps twirling his knife over and over, and then Indy Jones just shrugs, takes out the gun and shoots him.
49.2 - LO supplies the alley, Kobe the oop. Fun stuff we don't get to see that often.
.5 - A lot of referee discussion, clock debate and Popovich yelling comes to a close when Mo Evans can't get the last minute off in time, anyway. 19-16 Spurs. Certainly can't complain too much about the prospect of holding San Antonio to a 38-point half. Of course, gotta outscore them in the process, or else it doesn't mean much. Thirty-three percent from the field likely won't get 'er done.
Second Quarter
11:36 - This just in. Kobe's got the ability to twist around in the paint.
10:23 - Beautiful over the shoulder pass by Kobe to a cutting Turiaf, who gets to the line but failed to convert. Ronny hits his head repeatedly in disgust.
And speaking of disgust, mine has been raised by the 4-10 clip at the stripe after the pair of misses by Turiaf.
During the time out, Jessica-- your Laker Girl representative for the All-Star game-- appears on the JumboTron. She lets us know her favorite movie is "Elf." Some interesting info, for sure, but I don't think that had as much to do with her winning the election as a slick campaign, stellar performances in the debates, and a proposal for a modest tax cut for the upper class.
6:48 - Having already done a nice job backing down Duncan for a left-handed layup on the previous Laker possession, Bynum draws the first whistle against the Big Fundamental. Two converted freebies (ABOUT TIME!!!) and it's 26 apiece. While I'm happy at Andrew's ability at the line, I'm growing a little disconcerted at the prospect of a 19-year-old being the team's second best free-throw shooter behind Kobe when it comes to guys who actually get to the line. Folks gotta pick it up.
5:45 - Bynum fumbles a fast break pass from Smush, the ball going outta bounds to the Spurs. It hits Andrew right in his ready hands. Gotta stay focused, Andrew! Thankfully, the kid redeems himself by swatting Tony Parker's shot and corralling it for a possession that eventually turns into a Kobe three.
2:43 - Smush goes from losing control mid-dribble and nearly collapsing on the floor to converting a running layup with Duncan in his face.
1:17 - Vlad drains the rainbow trey. Feels like it's been ages since one of those went down.
Kobe's 18-foot jumper puts the Lakers up 44-36, a lead that holds when Tim Duncan misses a layup to close out the half. The Lakers' shooting percentage is up 45% from 33, and the Spurs' down from 32% to 29. I don't know everything about math, but that seems like a good thing when it comes to a better number for the Lakers. We shall see. Back at the third.
Third Quarter
11:10 - Bynum not only outreaches every Spur, but Vlad Rad as well to snag his ninth board of the contest. While Bynum obviously still requires work, especially in certain defensive situations, his effort in the rebounding department is a consistent whirlwind, and not just today. The kid's always making a conscientous effort to make a play for every loose ball, even the ones he doesn't come up with.
9:33 - LO forces Tony Parker to alter his shot and miss the lay up, but Duncan's there to clean up the glass and score the putback. Granted, it's hard to expect Smush to outrebound TD (as was the case in this particular scenario), but the Lakers are getting crushed in second-chance points. It was 9-0 at the half and is thus far "counting."
9:07 - I'll give Bynum this much. If you're gonna get a T, you might as well get your money's worth, as was certainly the case in Andrew's case. No doubt as to why he got hit.
5:40 - Manu now thinks it's Wednesday, because Kobe just faked him into the middle of next week on that drive to the basket.
4:31 - Kobe looks VERY pissed after getting called for hitting Duncan's arm on a block attempt. Thoughts from looking at the replay? Inconclusive. I could buy both explanations. Certainly was close enough that I can see where Kobe thought he got hosed.
4:05 - Vlad Rad and LO team up to force a turnover from Michael Finley. I'll be curious to hear Phil's assessment of Vlad after the game.
1:22 - Smush fights through a scrum to come up with a steal, the ball eventually ending up in Mo's hands for a trip to the line and two converted ones. Keep picturing Smush's role in that sequence and it becomes slightly easier to forgive the airballed floater he puts up on the next possession.
Consecutive missed treys by Kobe and Vlad close out the quarter, but the spirit accompanying a 10-point lead can't be dampened; 67-57 Lakers. Can they close it out strong and hit the road on a winning streak. We shall see.
Fourth Quarter
10:50 - Fabricio Oberto (who looks more like a dude who'd be spending his days chain smoking at Euro cafes had he not have reached the 7-foot mark) gets called for a foul as he and Turiaf jostle for position. It's getting pretty physical between the two, although given Ronny's tendancy to smile througout most proceedings, I can't say for sure it's getting testy as well.
8:49 - I loved how Farmar blew past Tony Parker on the floater, but what really impressed me is how he cradled the ball heading in. He might be the best on the team at making that extra effort to help prevent getting stripped.
6:22 - Farmar's hustle both creates a turnover on Duncan and draws the loose ball on Parker. The rook's having a very good quarter. I've been concerned of late about Farmar's ability to continue his strong play early in the season, now that teams are starting to pay more attention to him and learning more of his game. January been less productive in spots and often up and down for Jordan, but this has been a nice showing.
3:18 - A Manu trey cuts the Laker lead to four (and because I didn't hear any "MANU!!!" afterward, I'm starting to think I was just imagining the lady's presence in the first place). He comes up dry on his next attempt and Vlad snags the rebound, but gets trapped after crossing the half court line. Time out, Lakers.
1:17 - Duncan gets away with a push-off on Bynum snagging a rebound (and I don't like to bitch, but it's about the 100th time TD's done it), which leads to Parker eventually at the line for a pair of converted freebies. Seventy-six squared.
27.5 - Kobe comes up dry on a trip to the rack, but Bynum secures the rebound and Vlad hits a game-tying trey. Lo and behold. Give yourself a shot at second-chance points and good things actually happen. Go figure! Life's crazy like that. Eighty all.
Not sure you guys could see it, but after Ginobli went down after the collision with Kobe trying stop Bryant's potential game winner, No. 24 went to check on the Argentine as he lay hurt on the court. Very nice sportsmanship.
And here we go. Yet another OT game. The Lakers must have something in every player's contract that if they play a certain amount of free hoops, there's a bonus involved. I don't know how else to explain it.
OT
Two consecutive trips where Kobe sets up cutters (first Vlad, then Bynum) with sweet passes for easy conversions. I like this "running to the rack" thing. Let's do more of it, shall we?
2:14 - Vlad gets called for a pretty ticky-tack foul, sending Parker to the line for two. He makes up for it with a deuce, but Parker quickly comes back with another bucket. Ginobli then goes to the stripe courtesy of Vlad and converts two. 91-90 Spurs. Although not for long, thanks to Kobe's 19-foot jumper.
30.7 - Kobe misses a runner and Michael Finley, crafty and 110 years old, secures the board. Time out SA, down by 1.
20.1 - Tim Duncan does what Tim Duncan do. Score when it's needed. 93-92 Spurs. Time out, Lakers.
7.0 - Kobe explodes to the rack, but the dunk gets waived off after Bowen fouls too early for continuation. No worries. He'll just can a 20-footer instead. Credit Smush for a nice screen to get the extra good look.
1.3 - The Lakers giveth, Mike Finley taketh away. Fin sheds LO's coverage and hits a trey to put the Spurs up by 2, 96-94.
Vlad's hit some big shots tonight, but his attempt at a game-winning three ain't one of them. Nothing but air. Final: 96-94, Spurs. Sucks to see a mostly Laker-controlled game go down in flames like this, but truth be told, the purple and gold were pushing their luck all game. Lotta missed good guy free throws.Lotta second-chance bad guy points. A dangerous combo if you're one of the good guys trying to snag the "W." But as always, thanks for dropping by.

Nice Dunk by Bynum....GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:38 PM
Whoa, Vlad starting? I predict huge game from Vlad tonight.
Let's go Lakers!
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:39 PM
Oh and by the way, I now have NBA League Pass...not that it matters today.
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:39 PM
HEY BK/AK,
How about opening up a live messenger board during game time?
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:41 PM
Things to look for. Watch the offensive position Bynum gets against Duncan.
mike
Posted by: Michael Teniente | January 28, 2007 at 12:41 PM
Bynum's got a good eye for the floor but has to stop his risky passing out of the post. The boy will learn.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:42 PM
I don't get why Vlad is starting. I would've gone with Mo. But then again I'm not the guy with 9 rings.
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 12:44 PM
ABC has an odd court level view...not too shabby, haven't seen the court look like that ever.
Almost like a rim level view.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Odom is looking good. Welcome back LO!
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Smush with a great steal on Duncan Donuts.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:46 PM
Looks like Odom's shaken that rust off.
I'd like to see Bynum be a bit more physical with Duncan the same way Kwame is.
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 12:46 PM
I saw Vlad play good pick and roll defense...
Wes
Posted by: wesjoenixon | January 28, 2007 at 12:46 PM
Lamar with a nice rebound and coast-coast layup. Made it look way too easy.
Lamar should also have a good game tonight, nobody on that team can guard Lamar with Vlade on the floor.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:48 PM
No AK/BK at the game today guys? Guess these "big games" are hard to get.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:49 PM
Appreciate the comments by Greg Pop!
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:50 PM
brandon,
I'm here. BK is in Colorado, doing some X-Games stuff for ESPN, who we also work for. We split up, because there were two home games during that time frame.

I kinda like Vlad in the starting line-up instead of Cookie. I think he plays slightly better D than Brian Cook. And he doesn't get nearly the same # of fouls as Cookie.
Cookie's valuable off the bench for sure.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:52 PM
I do notice the camera view...very nice.
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:52 PM
Where is our offense?
Posted by: bonez | January 28, 2007 at 12:54 PM
Even though were down by 6 or whatever, at least the Lakers look a little more intact today.
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 12:55 PM
Ooops, AK, didn't see the live-recaps and this thread wasn't called LIVE at Staples Center. Hah, Liver Laker game rox vs. X-Games. But X-Games lasts longer and you get some Snow-time in. Hard choice!
Smush should post up on Eva's man.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 12:56 PM
Lakers D is quite good today. Smush is very good defensively and active. He's gotta watch the 3second in the lane D call though, he's in there a bit much. He kinda loses his man after he does the Help D.
The Laker D looks like they're ok with outside shots but won't give ANYTHING in the paint.
Bynum's not looking like a foul machine tonight, that's GREAT news.
Lakers offense is stalled, Lakers (Smush/Vlad) gotta hit those open Js.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:00 PM
NICE ALLY-OOP! Lamar to Kobe!
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 01:02 PM
Man, am I glad Lamar's back or what? Serious rebounding, finally!
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:06 PM
Agree Brandon. I do notice a change in the rebound category.
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 01:10 PM
Free throws will hurt us tonight. We need to get it together here.
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 01:13 PM
Brandon/Ron,
Considering the Lakers ain't that great on the boards with LO in there, the difference when he's out becomes even more astronomical.

i was sooo mad about the lost on friday I forgot we were playing today...
Posted by: bob | January 28, 2007 at 01:17 PM
It's amazing how Kobe can take a shot that's a bad shot for almost anyone else in the league but it's money for him. I think Kobe makes more fadeaways with a hand in his face than open jumpers in rhythm.
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 01:17 PM
You see what I'm saying about Mo? His game is not as complete as Luke. Let's watch more GAMES to DECIDE if Luke is better offensively or Murice.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:18 PM
I love Marc Jackson for an analyst. I wish we could get him instead of Stu 'the negative chage' Lantz. I know I'm dreamin.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:20 PM
rayray,
Luke is better offensively. Those who say Mo should start say that because of his superior defense.
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 01:25 PM
With Odom, there's a guy with some sense playing defense down there. I had forgotten what that looks like.
Posted by: McGarnagle | January 28, 2007 at 01:25 PM
Marc Jackson is intelligent with his comments but he lacks passion. His voice is too soft in my opinion.
If he was more passionate, he'd be excellent
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:25 PM
bob, i know how you feel about the last loss. I went on an NBA strike since Friday.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:26 PM
Andrew Bynum's LIMIT is the SKY. I think this was the FIRST time Timi had to foul a guy POSTING him up and getting face to face with him in his CAREER. (By the way with Shaq, Timi didn't even get up so no foul but a DUNK)
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:26 PM
C'MON BOBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 01:27 PM
Man, this is a low scoring game with the only highlight plays coming from the Lakers. I can't blame the Staples crowd for being low-energy. Just as the crowd can energize the players, the players are responsible for energizing the crowd.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:28 PM
What is this a 3 point contest? lol
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 01:30 PM
I have a formula to beat the SPURS:
MAKE TParker shoot JUMPERS
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:30 PM
Speaking of the Flopping rule the league is trying to come out with (NICE BLOCK BYNUM)!, next thing you kno (NICE SHOT KOBE)! know, the NBA is going to (HERE COMES THE LAKERS)! start implimenting challenge plays like NFL football.
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 01:32 PM
Lakers will be scary in the playoffs... They are awesome against good team, and seem to mail it in against bad teams.
You can be even Suns and Mavs do not want to see LA in the playoffs
Posted by: mike | January 28, 2007 at 01:32 PM
3 straight 3 pointers, Bynum blocks and the Lakers crowd cheering, now THAT's what I'm talking about.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:33 PM
Ron, I'd kinda like to see "CHALLENGE" Plays in the NBA as well. I know it's pretty exciting when it happens in the NFL, would make some NBA games interesting.
Use a challenge, lose a TimeOut
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:36 PM
Hey Rayray,
I also have a formula to beat the spurs
OUTSCORE THEM!
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 01:36 PM
man I missed Odom....ummmm are we ever ganna have the whole team ok
Posted by: bob | January 28, 2007 at 01:37 PM
Xodus-
Good just want to clearify that and then go for proving them he is INDEED a better deffender too.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:37 PM
Sweeeeeeeeeeet first half. It's all about the D. Goooooo Lakers
Posted by: Burbank Gal | January 28, 2007 at 01:41 PM
If the Lakers are going to get a high seed, they need to take care of business against bad teams like the Spurs. You can't go out and expect to win games against the likes of the Grizzlies, Blazers and Sixers.
Posted by: McGarnagle | January 28, 2007 at 01:42 PM
Now thats some D!!36 points.!
Posted by: Rizzo | January 28, 2007 at 01:44 PM
Lakers are playing CLEAN DEFENSE. Very few fouls and none of the Laker fouling machines in foul trouble (Lamar, Bynum, Cookie, Ronny)
Probably the best interior D game I've seen this year so far. Both Lakers and Spurs aren't allowing open lanes for points in the paint.
Smush out playing the OTHER Parker.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 01:48 PM
this make three games in a row we've shot twice as many free throws as our opponent. Maybe PJ's constant harping is paying off.
Posted by: cookiemonster | January 28, 2007 at 01:49 PM
NO LETDOWN.
FULL INTENSITY FOR 48.
LETS GET IT DONE.
PLAY HARD, WE WIN.
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 01:52 PM
MARC JACKSON RULES.
ABC IS OK.
LAKERS ON A ROLL.
ODOM LOOKING MUCH BETTER.
BYNUM- GOT 8 AND 8. ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE IS IMMINENT.
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 01:53 PM
This D is just embarrassing the, once, Mighty Spurs. DON'T DO IT TO EM GUYS.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:55 PM
NOBODY SWEATS MORE THAN ODOM.
A LOT OF GOOD NO CALLS BY REFS.LOVE IT.
THE SITE IS GETTING REALLY SLOW DURING GAMES.
NICE FINISH TO HALF.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LAKESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 01:57 PM
Now we know why Marc Jackson likes the Lakers and is especially complimentary of Jordan Farmar.
His son plays JV at Taft High in LA. lol. Gotta get love anywhere you can...
Posted by: mel | January 28, 2007 at 01:58 PM
whatever STARGAZIN just SAID.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 01:58 PM
Is this the best D we've played thus far this season? I can't remember a better defensive half.
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 01:59 PM
Kobe is God.
Posted by: Xodus | January 28, 2007 at 02:01 PM
AND 1 for Kobe!
Posted by: mel | January 28, 2007 at 02:01 PM
Hey we're WINNIN and all but I just DON'T wanna see San Antonio in the PLAYOFFS. I donno why.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:03 PM
KOBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
WILL LEAD US HOME.
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 02:03 PM
3 STRAIGHT BAD DECISIONS FOR KOBE.
HE'S GOTTA GET IT UNDER CONTROL

WELCOME BACK CAPITAN
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:09 PM
GREAT HAVING ODOM OUT THERE,AGAIN.
ITS AMAZING WATCHING SOMEONE THAT BIG GO COAST TO COAST.
GOTTA HIT THE TFS.
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 02:10 PM
Please make free throws though
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:10 PM
If the NBA voted on All-Bonehead 1st and 2nd teams, I think there would be at least 4 or 5 Lakers represented.
Posted by: McGarnagle | January 28, 2007 at 02:10 PM
Kobe was right, they just had to get used to the Spurs' game. Looks like they figured it out now. Nice.
Posted by: Dave | January 28, 2007 at 02:11 PM
Lakers gotta hit those freebies. Man, bad free throw shooting night to match the good Defense.
Lakers are going through their funk stretch of the game but will clean it up.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 02:13 PM
Bynum is getting very emotional....in a ways, I like it.

That was ALL BALL
and LO is BACK.

Where playing pretty good D but we gadda clean up the boards...neone noticed that Kobe has stepped up the D on Finley since he hit those 3's?
Posted by: bonez | January 28, 2007 at 02:25 PM
Horry going for a ride on the Bynum Coaster...Bynum held up all of Horry's weight for a bit there.

DEFENSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Great to have Lamar back.
GO LAKERS!

LAMARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 02:35 PM

That's RIGHT bonez
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:39 PM
Crazy floater by Farmar, nice one. Play some D Justin.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 02:39 PM
Jordan has some DEFFENSIVE issues.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:41 PM
Now if we could only play the top tier teams for the rest of the season, we'll be set. Can we make a deal with some teams? Trade opponents. I'm sure other teams won't mind playing crap teams.
Posted by: two0one7 | January 28, 2007 at 02:44 PM
But the OFFENSE is difinitaly SMOOTH when Jordan's IN.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:44 PM
He needs to MAKE SHOTS to play. That is a FACT.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:45 PM
I like Farmar taking it to the hole, they cant stop him , he just gotta get a little more brave.
Posted by: Rizzo | January 28, 2007 at 02:45 PM
Allez-Lakers!!! Six minutes~~~ Wahoouuu!
Posted by: mike | January 28, 2007 at 02:46 PM
rayray,
all the things you say are true, but jordan's a rookie and he's getting big time PT on a big time club.
Posted by: mel | January 28, 2007 at 02:47 PM
Just trade NASH whenever we're playing the SUNS and we're FINE. haha
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:47 PM
I don't worry about playing with the TOP TIER teams, it's the crappy ones that scare me and obviously the Lakers as well.
I think Farmar is a bit too slow on offense. He holds the ball too long before he makes his move. Thinks too much about it. His passes are too deliberate.
He's a rookie I know, just some thoughts on his O. Playing well for a Rookie though, 4th quarter minutes.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 02:48 PM
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LAKESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Posted by: stargazin | January 28, 2007 at 02:51 PM
These second chance points are killing us!
Posted by: bonez | January 28, 2007 at 02:52 PM
Hahah, friggin' Ginobolli, he totally pushed Rad with his arm then acts like he did nothing wrong. NBA really is full of actors for sure.
Posted by: Brandon | January 28, 2007 at 02:53 PM
AK,
lol on the Oberto in the French Cafe comment. Would Radmonic be with him?
Posted by: mel | January 28, 2007 at 02:53 PM
Rizzo-
STRONGER first and then he'll get BRAVE.
Posted by: rayray | January 28, 2007 at 02:54 PM
I'm not Zakee, but take Farmar over Smush. What he is doing here? Smush sucks big time now. 2 TO in the matter of 2 minutes, this guy just killing us
Posted by: LAL_Fan | January 28, 2007 at 02:54 PM
STOP THE TURN OVERS
STOP THE SECOND CHANCE POINTS
HIT THE FREAKIN FREE THROWSSSSSSSSSSSSS

DUNCAN gets calls and DREW doesn't. On the SAME exact situation. That kinda STINKS.

Smush without headband now, he must be getting serious.

Mel,
I can't even begin to speculate what Vlad would be doing were he not an NBA player. But I imagine it would be something oddish. Dude's a character at times. haha

Guys, we need a different look...a change of some sort otherwise, we are not going to make it. Unless if we are looking just to make the playoffs.
But I'll give it to the Spurs, even though it pains me to say it.

dammit.
when the Lakers should be stepping it up, they start throwing the ball away and get all stagnant on offense.
what's going on with this team right now? i'm starting to see some real problems on the consistency end and now it's become more apparent because they haven't been able to battle through it and get the win.

THE JACKSON JOURNAL: 44th Game – San Antonio Spurs (27-17)
By Michael C. Teniente
A thumb’s up for Phil Jackson!
KEY OBSERVATION
With our continual losses to the weak teams I’m not really surprised with a loss to San Antonio. Even if we had won there are problems and thinking that our problems are solved with a win over San Antonio is delusional.
San Antonio plays right into the Lakers’ hands. They’re slow footed and play from a set offense. Those slow Spurs’ feet benefit the Lakers, while the Spurs are playing defense. It allows the Lakers to run the triangle like it’s drawn up. It’s structured basketball. Take away the structure and the Lakers struggle. It’s like the Lakers are saying: Hey, we can’t run the triangle if they play that way (against the weak team). Again, the Spurs game plan plays right into the Lakers’ hands. In my opinion, the difference between the Spurs’ slow feet and the Lakers’ slow feet is that the Spurs are old and the Lakers are young.
Look at the final score at the end of regulation, 80-80. Are the Lakers that good on defense? I don’t think so. I think the Spurs play from a set offense and it allows the Lakers to play stand up defense. Get a running team against the Lakers and our slow feet are exposed.
This coming road trip, when we play the weak teams, is when we’re going to see what the Lakers are all about. I’m convinced that the defense is what it is. It’s not that good but it’s compounded when the Lakers don’t execute the offense. When the Lakers don’t execute the offense it creates transition opportunities for the opponent. That isn’t a good thing. The key is for the Lakers is to not get bored with the triangle against weak teams. If they do get bored and don’t execute the triangle…the defense will suffer.
When the team misses 13 free throws and get out rebounded of on the offensive end 16-5, you know the Lakers aren’t a disciplined team. I say talented, yes. But disciplined, no. It’s always that way in our losses. We don’t hit our free throws. We turn the ball over too much. We get out rebounded on the offensive end. It’s not like teams are beating us. We’re beating ourselves. All that is a lack of discipline.
PHOTO OF THE DAY

If you other players can find the discipline to hit free throws, crash the offensive boards, this man will take us a very long way.
GO LAKERS!

So... all the Spurs needed to win the game was 33% shooting? That's what you call yet another choke job by the Los Angeles Boneheads.
Posted by: McGarnagle | January 28, 2007 at 03:34 PM
Blame the loss on Smush Parker. His two turnovers in regulation changed the momentum of the game. He was just bringing the ball up and he turned it over. We need a new point guard. He then throws up a ridiculous shot in overtime. Farmar is the type of point guard we need to have playing at the end of the game. He has played in the big games and is composed. Parker needs to go back to playing streetball in New York and leave the Lakers
Posted by: TOM | January 28, 2007 at 03:34 PM
Congratulation fans!!! We suck to loose like that. I know tomorrow some big talking heads will try to come up with the reasons, I don't care. We suck to loose like that after being up by 11. This is team is not ready to play for championship, you like or not.
Posted by: LAL_Fan | January 28, 2007 at 03:35 PM
Odom 4 for 10 on free throws. That was the game. You could see it coming from the second quarter. SA took 7 fewer free throws and made 4 more.
And don't forget the Evans' technical on Friday and Bynum's today. Two Ls instead of Ws because of technicals. But the free throws were the killers (except for Kobe and Bynum... and even Kobe missed one).

Posted by: nyla | January 28, 2007 at 03:36 PM
grand total of 2 assists from Parker point guards today
2 by T. Parker and NONE by Smush
Posted by: cookiemonster | January 28, 2007 at 03:37 PM
Hard times for the Lakers my friends...
Posted by: Gill | January 28, 2007 at 03:38 PM
When duncan is in the post, lakers need to shade him on his right side. He is not effective with his back to the basket and his right side taken away from him. Vlad actually played a fairly decent game, offensively and defensively. Why is Smush guarding Tony Parker 30 feet away from the basket? Tony Parker can't even shoot it from 15 feet and Smush goes all the way out there and gets caught in a screen. Lakers will become a title contender when Farmar starts in place of Parker.
Posted by: TOM | January 28, 2007 at 03:38 PM
Ok, I am now laughing in denial. CAN WE PLEEEEEEZZZZEEEE TRADE, as a matter of fact, lets forfeit the rest of the season, go into the draft and just admit what we really are....mediocre!
Posted by: Ron | January 28, 2007 at 03:39 PM
Kupchack has made some decent moves in the past couple of offseaons. The one he should make this year is NOT resigning Smush Parker: that would be a huge mistake.
Posted by: TOM | January 28, 2007 at 03:41 PM
Every time the Lakers step onto the court, the opposing point guard is better. Clippers Sam Cassel, Kings Mike Bibby, Suns Steve Nash, Sonics Luke Ridinour, Warriors Baron Davis, Spurs Tony Parker, Bobcats Raymond Felton, Mavericks Jason Terry, etc. etc. etc.

This might be the game that turns the Spurs season around, how did the Lakers lose this one? The Spurs shot 31%. I love Kobe's offensive game but his defense is a travisty. Getting into a defensive stance and tugging at your shorts is not playing defense. Finley scored most of his points with KB guarding him. Kobe needs to go back to taking at least 23 shots a game, this new style of play is messing with his mindset. He's trying to be Dwayne Wade and that's not who he is, look at the Heat's record. The Lakers are 0-2 since Lamar's return, somebody should re-injur him in practice. PJ might be one of the most overrated coaches in league history. Maybe he should hire MJ as an assistant. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Lakers will be put out in the first round of the playoffs this year. They've played a favorable schedule and got a lot of fans hyped up for nothing, they win at home partially because teams love to come to L.A and party Saturday night right before Sun. games and because we live in a really cool city. The playoffs will be different. Laker fans need to pick whether or not they're going to cheer for the Mavs or the Suns and go from there. The only thing that could make this years first round defeat any worse is if Shaq comes back, plays 20 games in which the Heat make the playoffs and win another championship.
Posted by: lou73 | January 28, 2007 at 03:47 PM
stop being so negative. 6-2 on our 8 game road trip.
Posted by: nyla | January 28, 2007 at 03:49 PM
I think Phil should start using Farmar more late in the game. Smush is very inconsistent in offense and defense. He makes great shots sometimes that if he missed it would no doubt qualify for a bonehead shot...
We played so well during the OT just to lose the game...
disappointing...
Posted by: jaworski | January 28, 2007 at 03:49 PM
you cant really blame the loss on smush (though i wanted to punch him in the face like 3 times)..
lots of things i'd like to say, but no one seems to be saying this : mo evans has been great.. HOWEVER, he needs to start sharing the rock, he's really turning into a black hole type player, and thats not what we need, especially if ur playing with the starting unit.

RANDOM COMMENTS FOLLOWING A DISGUSTING LAKER LOSS
* You cannot miss freethrows and expect to win against an elite team.
* The Spurs played horribly. But they played well during "winning time". Conversely, the Lakers played well but played horribly during "winning time". Thus, the difference between an elite team and a runner up.
* Now the Lakers go on a 2 week roadtrip with a 2 game losing streak. For all of you bloggers who say losing to sub-par teams like Charlotte don't mean anything, now I hope you can understand why you're dead wrong. Any loss is meaningful, and to dismiss losses against poor teams is just plain stupid
* Mo Evans has now played his 3rd bad game in a row. The 3 position for the Lakers will cost us come playoff time.
* I counted a few KMKs (key moment killers), but 2 stand out - one was a turnover by Kobe Bryant, and the other were missed free throws by Lamar Odom
* I'm not impressed with Lamar or Bynum's hands. They seem to constantly bobble rebounds, sometimes losing them.
* Luke Walton may not have a lot of basketball intelligence, but he is a basketball thinker (there's a difference). Lamar Odom has very little basketball intelligence and he's not a "basketball thinker".
* This would have been a good game to have Cook in. The Spurs weren't hitting their shots early, so we didn't need intense pressure. We did need some shots made, and Cook would have provided that for us. Thanks Phil.
* There are 2 things that really piss me off...one are touch fouls that result in 3 point plays and the other are missed free throws.
* Lamar's return hasn't paid dividends. I'm not saying he hasn't contributed, but he just hasn't helped us win yet.
* I count 7 times in the past 2 years that the Lakers have lost games due to doubling down in the key and leaving open shooters on the perimeter (read Tim Thomas, Suns v lakers playoffs '05-'06). Just once I'd like to see them not do this.
* There's certain players who will more often than not beat you on a last moment 3. Finney is one of them. He's done it many times before to many teams.
* Can anyone beat the Suns? They're due for a few injuries; maybe that will help.
* Lets hope we have the 7 spot come Valentine's day.
* This lost hurt. The Lakers are playing horribly lately. This is one of those losses that upset me. So much for the rest of my Sunday.
* I have a bad feeling about our Laker team...

Key for the loss:
---Smooth 5 turnovers
---53 % ft shooting
---Minimal production from bench(except Farmar)
---Lamar and Bynum looked tired at the end
---Conceeding offensive rebounds
---Mo Evans 0-5 shooting
----Vujacic looked tired, (probably too much disco last night)
---Vladimir playing defense at the end and not Evans(Phil is starting to give him some confidence before playoffs)
---Bad sustitution by Phil.
---Last shot play not so cleaver
hat was a game

Laker Tom,
I beg to differ on "who" is to blame for this loss! It's all about the free throws and rebounding, although, the offensive rebounds are something that is a product of the many opportunities created by the poor shooting of the Spurs. The free throws are a "team" problem. No way you can pin it on any one player. If just one guy had hit one more free throw in regulation, we win!
Farmar is going to be an effective player eventially, but he suffers on defense now and there isn't any getting around that.

In fairness to LA, it was Finley's trey that killed us, I think we played "ok" bball on OT.
I cant wish that kobe held on to the ball a little longer because that 2 is better than having nothing at all.
tough luck. At least Odom is getting back to his old pre-injury self. When Brown returns then we can reset again. I only wish we have beaten the lower teams, that really hurt a lot losing to lower ranking teams...
Posted by: jaworski | January 28, 2007 at 04:04 PM
We lost the ballgame but it was not similar to the previous loss to Bobcats. You can see that in this game, our players were trying to win and they did their best. It is really difficult to contain SA 3x in a row, they almost lost the 3rd one if Lakers managed their turnovers and free throw shots. I would not put the blame on Smush, you can see that he has improved on his defense, it's just a matter of reducing t/o's through good game management.
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | January 28, 2007 at 04:04 PM
I also think that Mo Evans is overrated with his D and offense...
He's concern about points thats why he's in a slumo right now. Very seldom you see him pass the ball once it touches his hands. He has to understand that he's not going to be a star player by scoring... the lakers already have scorers... its the other roles they need...
He's a bit of a "ball-hog" at times, which i dont like.
Posted by: jaworski | January 28, 2007 at 04:21 PM
OOT
Ive been reading a lot of ESPN stuff and its pisses me off that they give too much props to arenas crowning him MVP... i dont get it... Yeah hes an all-star but MVP? thats just pure BS from the ESPN-witch doctors...
Kobe was doing that last season and MORE. but all these talk about ball hogging was all they could talk about...
I dont even think Dirk N. should be a candidate... I give more props to J.Howard and Harris for doing a major part in the Mavs success. Dirk hasnt done anything "special" for me that he hasnt done the past years...
Posted by: jaworski | January 28, 2007 at 04:28 PM
One of the bloggers one said that this team does not have the "killers instinct". It was also noticed by Marc Jackson when they let SA catchup with them when they were leading by 9 pts. with few minutes to go. As you can see, the Phoenix Suns won their game on the road against the Cavaliers and they punish their opponents for every opportunity they find. Similar to Dallas, on a bad day, they manufacture a victory on the road won by 2 pts. in SAC. Perhaps, this kind of attitude should be permeated on young players like bynum, farmar, smush, sasha that they should rally the team especially in this forthcoming road trip. It will spell the difference if this team can win at least 7-1 on this road trip.
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | January 28, 2007 at 04:30 PM
You people our amazing...How can you blame this lost on Kobe?????????????? Man its real simple missed free throws, rebounding (Kwame Brown is our best rebounder and interior defender remember) and our point guard panics way to much in crucial points of the game. Simple as that. I've really been hard on Smush but the proof is in the pudding. The guy cant stick a turtle on the court he reaches way to much. And to be honest I thought Kobe's defense was good today. Finley just made a clutch shot it was a very good game. But honestly we need to make a trade for a point guard. Maybe Bibby.
Posted by: Paul Lee | January 28, 2007 at 04:34 PM
keifo,
"Why do you give a thumbs up to PJ?"
How can I blame PJ for 13 missed free throws? How can I blame PJ for the 16 offensive rebounds the Lakers gave up? That's the players.
The only time PJ gets a thumb's down is when he's stubborn about something that costs us a game. Like not calling a timeout. Or when he goes with a player that's getting used and doesn't pull him. The rest is on the players.

Posted by: Michael Teniente | January 28, 2007 at 04:39 PM
We suck. Trade Kobe cause he came up for us big at key moments during the game, he played some solid defense, and helped get his teammates open shots. Trade Lamar cause he gave us only 18, 10, and 6 in only his 2nd game back...and cause he looked a little tired at the end.
I thought I'd join in on the ridiculous talk!
Posted by: nyla | January 28, 2007 at 04:46 PM
Love Bynum kid has serious potential but gettin alotta stats doesn't mean your ready to start. Timmy killed Bynum in the fourth! All the blocked shots don't mean a thing when crunch time comes an your team has to double or triple your man. We lost this game when Phil had to give Bynum some help controlling Duncan that's what Pop's was hoping for it happened Spurs walk out with the W!! That is championship ball! I've heard it time and time again from fans, the media, and Espn the the lakers need to start Bynum and wonder why Phil hasn't made the move. This game sums it up Kwame may never be a twenty-ten guy but as of right now he's on of the best defensive big men in the game today. Phil believes that he said it! Bynum may be the future but Bynum will never cover a legitimate power forward and if the Lakers get rid of Kwame there chances of winning the big one dramitically decrease and Phil knows this!! Bynum is the truth serious potential but Phil also can see the diamond that Kwame will soon become. He won't give you 20 a game but remember Rodman won how many championships and dang sure should be a hall of famer. Bynum starts next year Kwame plays the four Odom the three Bryant the two Farmer the one Phil see's this he's groming for it but that's next year for now Bynum is a sixth man.

Mike T.,
Although you haven't mentioned it..... this was a game when we "really" needed Kwame. He plays well against Duncan and I think he would have stopped that low block move he has.
Another thinp that puzzles me is why we didn't foul Duncan the last 2 times he had the ball in OT. I thought that was a blunder on Phil's part. He should have called for the foul anytime Duncan touched the ball. He would have been lucky to hit 1 of 2 free throws in crunch time.

tarugass,
Your heat love has expired. Please go away. Let's turn this thing around.
I celebrate everytime Wade hits the floor. That selfish, overlyprotected gem is a fluke. I love it now that Shaq can't even carry his OWN weight. In fact, how does that make an idiot feel when he wants to come back and live in L.A. when he retires? I would love to hear your comments.
The fat guys can't even make the squad. Riley-ThankHeavenforMagic even quit on them. That is the ying/yang of Riles. He killed VanGundy to steal the team. Now he deserts the team when they are losing. 15 strong? Not quite. I think tarugass can speak for all the idiots. The knock on Kobe has run its course. Believe it or not, it's older than Mike T and Kwame..and they've been together for quite some time.
We won't see you in the playoffs. You need to have a winning record to get there.

This loss was all about missed free throws, lack of defensive rebounding in crucial spots and 6 more turnovers than the Spurs. The Spurs played like spit but they won because they have won these types of games for a long time. Experience is the best teacher. I'll never get down on my team, the Lakers, unless they display a lack of effort. That wasn't the case today.

Ay carumba. I was at today's game. I've always wanted to see an OT thriller but not like this. :( This loss was because of missed free throws and turnovers. I wish they had driven in more in OT since Duncan had 5 fouls on him.
To make it worse I had to sit next to two loudmouth Spurs fans - I'm a sore loser and listening to those idiots cheer Finley's 3 almost made me lose it. :(

My bad...I misread the box score...in an earlier post I said that the Lakers had 6 more turnovers than the Spurs when they actually had less...10 as opposed to 11.

Troy,
Great post.
Agree with eveyrthign you said.
Especially that last point. WE better watch out man.
This 8 game road trip will DEFINE this team this year. IF we dotn come out of it like roses, we might be in some serious trouble.

Trade Smush or just tell him not to come to games anymore. The most overrated player with the poorest fundamentals in the whole NBA. It really sucks to have someone with such ability obviously not study his game. You can tell he does nothing to improve his game by just his shot selection alone. Who needs enemies if you have a player like Smush who can single-handedly lose games by consistently taking bad shots or handing the ball to the other team. Smush, quit coming to games and the Lakers have a chance to win it all. You're a liability that the Zen Master should see!!!
