Live From Staples- Lakers vs. Sixers
BK here.
Oh, it's on, people. The goal tonight? A) Avoid consecutive losses to two of the worst teams in basketball, and b) get us out of here at a reasonable hour to enjoy New Year's Eve. No whistles!
Fantasy update: I've got Iguodala and Dalembert, so if there's a way they can go for a combined 60/30 and have the Lakers still win, I'd appreciate it. I'm really suffering hin that league. As for real hoops, it'll be interesting to see how the Sixers can take advantage of the Lakers P&R vulnerability, given the roster shakeup, and that Dalembert isn't the greatest player in the league away from the hoop. And as I type that, they go to the high screen. The Lakers cut off the roll from Dalembert, but nobody picked up Rodney Carney, who took the pass at the top of the circle and waltzed to the hoop for a dunk.
8:49- Timeout on the floor. 8-4 Lakers, and after Kobe basically went unimpeded to the hole, Mo Cheeks took a TO. For the time being, the Lakers are taking everything at the hole. Cook and Walton both converted down there, and Kobe's getting to the rack as well. It's always positive to see them start inside and work their way out. Not sure if you've noticed, but occasionally, they get a little jump shot happy. After a couple jumpers, Walton takes the ball to the rack and picks up the foul. It's a good ratio so far.
It'll be interesting to see as well if this game is played like guys who have plans later on tonight. Iguodala hits a J over Kobe. That's the big matchup offensively/defensively tonight.
6:54- Hard to tell if Kwame lost sight of Dalembert, or was just moving to front him, but whatever it was, Andre Miller went over him for a dunk. I wonder if the Lakers will get so jumpy on the pick and roll that they'll start underplaying other sets.
4:50- Great power move by Kwame inside. He drove Dalembert out of the way, and despite missing the layup, got the putback for the easy dunk. I want to see how he responds after a game in Charlotte where he had some serious rough patches despite a good looking box score, was criticized after the game by PJ, and called out his teammates afterwards. Thus far tonight, he's playing aggressively on both ends, including a great offensive rebound at 3:22, ducking under Dalembert fro the board and the bucket. He's going hard at the boards, instead of hoping it comes to him. I don't know if he's playing angry, but if he is, that's probably not a bad thing.
End of the First: 26-18
Nice quarter for the Lakers. They've built up a solid lead on a team they should beat down pretty easily. P&R update: Couple things- the Sixers don't do it nearly as well. Their picks haven't been all that sharp, and more than once the Lakers have done well anticipating it (good lord, you know it's coming) and avoiding the screen. Also, when they've set the screen with Korver, he rolls to the perimeter, rather than the hoop. Less of an issue in covering the lane.
AK will take the second.
Second Quarter
The opening 12 minutes start out with a "Remember James Brown" tribute on the jumbotron. Way to do yourselves right, Staples Center.
11:23 - I have to agree with Stu and Joel (who are sitting within ear shot). There's no way in hell Vlad should have gotten an assist on that desperation dunk by Evans. I might be protesting that even if I had Radmanovic on my fantasy squad, just in the spirit of basketball fairness.
Lakers PA guy Lawrence Tanter could barely mask the surprise in his voice when announcing that Shammond Williams was checking into the game. For that matter, the entire press row expressed its shock. It was actually funny.
8:47 - Gee, you think Shammond shot that trey in a hurry? Clearly the look of a guy thinking, "Okay, seriously. This could be my only attempt until March rolls around. I ain't effing around, people!" But hey, dude drained it, so no worries.
There's a guy sitting next to me that I only have to assume isn't on the air while talking into his headset and describing the Sixers by saying, "This team stinks." I cracked up.
FYI - Either Jack Nicholson has a hot date tonight or he's not such a big Willie Green fan that he HAS to watch the guy play live. But whatever the reason, Col. Nathan Jessup isn't in his usual seat this evening. Dyan Cannon, ever the trooper, is here.
I don't mean to get all statsy on everyone, because everyone knows they can be manipulated however one chooses, but do you realize the Lakers have NEVER trailed a game on New Years Eve with Shammond Williams on the court? Think about it.
4:10 - Mo Evans leaves Ashton Kutcher - er, Kyle Korver- wide open for a trey. Very "shades of Matt Carroll." The guy ain't out there for his lockdown D, Mo. Gotta stick with him.
2:27 - Smush redeems himself after hesitating WAAAAAYYYYYY too long before missing a trey (You could have completed a solioqy in the time he had) by connecting on a 15-footer. With 7 attempts before the half's even over, you can't exactly accuse Smush of being gunshy tonight, but there are still those little moments where he looks tentative (although much less these days, to be fair).
1:30 - Speaking of gunshy (or never being it, more accurately), the Lakers come out of the timeout with Cook catching and shooting right off the bat. That's one of the things I've always appreciated about Cookie. Dude doesn't screw around when he gets the rock.
With three seconds left, Kobe hits the clutch 8 footer to boost the Lakers' lead to the same number. 46-38 Lakers. If you're a parent and ever wanted to teach your impressionable child how to miss a lay up, make sure the tyke watches a little of tonight's game. Some cringe-worthy moments. We'll see if the third gets any prettier.
THIRD QUARTER-
Just putting this out there, but if the Lakers hadn't lost those 11 games, they'd be on a 30 game win streak.
The Lakers start the quarter with Mo Evans instead of Brian Cook. Not a reflection of Cook's play, I think, but a mathcup thing with the lineup Cheeks has out there. But in a perfect world, it would be good to see him get more time with the first unit, since it shores up the D. I'm on board for more minutes for the guy. I know we've said it before, but once L.O. gets back, they'll have a ton of lineup options again. 10:20- Nice cut by Luke to take the feed from Smush on the baseline for the dunk.
No whistles, it's New Year's Eve!
8:51- Kwame lands on Miller's foot after blocking his shot, and twists his ankle BAD. Hopefully it's not as bad as it seemed, but he couldn't get up afterwards, and was down for a while. The Lakers had to foul just to get the stoppage. Brown needed help getting off the court, and was putting no pressure on the ankle on his way to the locker room (it's the left one, by the way). Bynum enters the game. Extended time out for Kwame would be a huge loss for the team, no question. And it's especially disappointing to see it on a night where he had been playing so well. It might have been his best game of the year. Guess we'll find out of if Ronny's hips are playable, b/c without Brown, the front line is thin.
Now everyone rush out to pick up Bynum in your fantasy league.
5:42- The Lakers ought to be able to work through this without Kwame tonight, owin' to the fact the Sixers totally suck, but it'll be interesting to see how they respond down the road. No L.O., no Kwame? Not exactly the blueprint Mitch and Co. wanted to work with.
4:00- Watching Evans, it's interesting to see how well he does with picks, both working through them, and especially at anticipating their arrival. He just doesn't get all that tangled up in them. Although, it might have something to do with the Sixers, who have set about three good picks all night.
2:18- Kobe has his 30th point, and has managed to stay in a great rhythm all night long. For reasons I don't entirely understand, the Sixers have given him a ton of open jumpers where he can just pull up and take them, and 24 is drilling everything. 14-19 at the end of the third, as the Lakers pull out to a 15 point lead. Hopefully he'll get to sit down for most of the fourth.
AK will take it home...
I hope everyone doesn't take this the wrong way, but should this become anything else than a totally boring game from here on out, I will be SORELY disappointed.
11:03 - Vlad's at the line and Ronny Turiaf checks in to thunderous applause. Dude could run for Mayor of Staples Center.
10:30 - Vlad and Alan Henderson get into it a bit of extra cirricular jawing and taunting. BK gives me a quizzical look and says, "Alan Henderson is still in the league?" Learn something new every day.
9:23 - Sasha pokes the ball aay from Andre Miller, then manages to corral a rather awkward half court pass from Vlad and convert the lay up. I'm glad to see Sasha playing much better of late. Granted, to some degree, it's all relative, considering he couldn't play much worse than the string of DNP-CD's he'd been clocking, but he's making the most of his opportunities. More importantly, he looks much more relaxed on the court for the most part. For a while, he was playing at such a hyperactive level, he was making Turiaf look like a Xanax O.D. Case.
8:53 - Fantastic extra pass by Ronny Turiaf from the paint to Jordan Farmar behind the arc. Conversion from downtown. Lakers up 91-75.
KWAME UPDATE - He's been diagnosed with a severe left ankle sprain. The X-Ray results are inconclusive. More tests tommorrow, including a CT scan. It's safe to say that's not how Kwame wanted to spend his first day of 2007. Everyone hope for the best.
4:48 - Vlad matches Kyle Korver's three- Seriously, someone guard this cat- with a three of his own.
4:11 - Perhaps I went too crazy earlier in praising Turiaf's extra pass in the paint, because he just bricked a very obvious "must shoot" scenario deep in the clock to pass the rock to Farmar for a missed three. Sometimes you just gotta put the ball up. That was one of those times. Someone next to me just said, "Turiaf must have himself on his fantasy team and is in dire need of assists."
2:58 - 101-88, Lakers. A nice spread, but it was once bigger. As someone named Bobby Jones shoots and misses freebies for Philly, Kobe checks back in. I can't begin to express how weak that is. I know it'll all end up fine, but that's kinda ridiculous.
1:38 - Mo Evans hits one from behind the arc, putting the Lakers back up 14. Obviously, they''re gonna come away with the "W," but there's no need to play as if you're trying to decide what eatery to hit for your New Year's dinner. Nothing to get too bent outta shape over, but some sloppy late action D, for sure.
1:05 - Shammond checks back in for Kobe. I have to imagine that no matter what kind of run Philly goes on, The New Jack Bauer's evening is officially done.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, Lakers fans! Raise your glasses to a 104-94 win and some hopefully good news regarding Kwame's ankle. Thanks for dropping by, everyone. Now go out and get your party face on. And for those on the East coast, 5 minutes and counting until 2007.
AK

BK you still know how to run a live blog from Staples Center? It's seems like ages :D
Lakers starting out with energy, I like it. My guess for today...Smush will outplay the trade favorite, Andre Miller
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 06:50 PM
Dangit, I'm at my friend's place tonight! A friend who doesn't have cable!! What is this, the stone age. Well, I guess I'll be hitting refresh a lot. Cookie has some rebounds already, so that looks good.

Thanks Bob!
Yay for proxyfoxy!

Nice O play by Smush...letting the man fly by...and making the short range.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 06:57 PM
Philly's crazy fouling tonight. Looks like it's going to be a big night for Smush, he's pretty aggressive
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 06:57 PM
Where\'s the help...Smush was drowning on his own in that bounce.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 06:58 PM
TOO MANY LAYUPS!
Let\\\'s go pick it up!
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 06:59 PM
The Space Cadet is stuck to the bench ...
Posted by: Kobe is a Team Player | December 31, 2006 at 06:59 PM
3:21 - Very good job by Kwame switching to the other side of the rim for Evans' miss, then scoring the put back. That kind of constant activity is key for Kwame. Always being on the move towards the ball, whether he gets it or not.

Alley Oop? LOL
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:09 PM
Igoudala is always looking for a monster dunk, not too many players like him I admit.
Heheh LO sighting

Good to see Lamar.
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 07:12 PM
Too many fouls by Bynum...challenge but don't foul Baby.
Course that ain't easy.
WTH Shammond Williams sighting? Yet when we were really really thin on the road, no dice? LOL
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:12 PM
Hey guys...anyway i can watch this online?
Posted by: bobie1 | December 31, 2006 at 07:13 PM
Who's that Williams guy who just checked in for the Lakers? HAHA!!
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 07:13 PM
Looks like Point Guard tryouts tonight.
Smush, Farmar and Sasha have all played and it's barely the beginning of the 2nd
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:14 PM
Activity by the Kwam! I like it!
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:14 PM
Ooops, and Shammond, definitely the Point guard tryouts tonight
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:15 PM
Lawrence Tanter seemed shocked announcing Shammond, like he had to look him up on the roster. Someone should call his mom and let her know her boy is on TV.

KWAME!
Posted by: Ed | December 31, 2006 at 07:16 PM
SHAMMOND!
Philly is playing like they want Greg Oden!
Posted by: Kobe is a Team Player | December 31, 2006 at 07:16 PM
Shammond Williams looks good...lets start him lol
Posted by: bob | December 31, 2006 at 07:17 PM
Another play where Kwame attacked the hole and went after the board. He didn't get it, but he was close. He's really playing with a lot of aggression tonight. Maybe Kwame needs a chip on his shoulder. Whatever it is, it's working.
BK
Posted by: Brian Kamenetzky | December 31, 2006 at 07:18 PM
Shoot, from what I've heard, I wouldn't be surprised if the Clippers were playing for Greg Oden
Is it me or did the Laker Benchwarmers just take it to Philly? I mean how the heck did the Lakers extend the lead with Shammond, Mo and Sasha on the floor? Hahahaha
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:19 PM
I have to say, I like what I'm hearing about his work effort (Shammond that is). Always nice to hear. And hopefully it pays off and he gets more playing time. It makes us that much deeper.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:19 PM
Hepy, is this small ball line-up geared towards defending the Suns? Looking at the team with Shammond, Sasha, Kobe, Luke and Kwame, that looks like a run and gun team
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:21 PM
Reading lips again...
Kobe just said from the bench:
"Come on man, just shoot!" lol
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:22 PM
Maybe this is what MJ saw in Kwame when he picked him #1
Posted by: Ed | December 31, 2006 at 07:24 PM
BTW,
I hope everyone has a great New Years. Personally, I don't go out on New Years anymore. Too many crazies out there; I don't want to end up in jail. HAHA!
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 07:25 PM
Bynum is a lil late in meeting the pick.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:25 PM
Hahah Faith, looked like Sasha didn't want to hear it
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:26 PM
Hopefully we win...that'll be that much more funnner a New Year. lol
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:28 PM
Laker lead, solid box score from Dalembert and Iguodala. So far, so good.
BK
Posted by: Brian Kamenetzky | December 31, 2006 at 07:30 PM
"Hopefully"? we're gonna win? We're winning this sucka, have some Faith!
That gimme basket by Smush was classic, he turned around and nobody was there...hahahha wth?
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:31 PM
LOL...okay, easy win! haha
Man that dude Kobe is good. Did you see that high high high off the glass layin? Who reaches that high? All I know is it\'s not a floater haha.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:34 PM
Well, this games is scheduled to end at midnight my time (EST), so it would be nice to crack the bubbly for the New Year, and a Lakers win.
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 07:35 PM
Whoa my play by play just said ":37.9 LAL - K. Bryant made a 26-foot three-pointer from the right wing" ... Was that a shot clock at zero shot?
Posted by: Kobe is a Team Player | December 31, 2006 at 07:35 PM
Sizzlin' 3 by Kobe and nice shot by Kobe from Smush.
Who was that girl they just showed in the crowd with the crown? Miss New Years 2007? :D
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:36 PM
Good end to the half. They built the lead back up to eight, after a 10-0 or whatever it was run. You can't let these guys even think they've got a shot. There's just no need.
BK
Posted by: Brian Kamenetzky | December 31, 2006 at 07:37 PM
man we have to learn to play some D.... When we ganna learn to play some D...
Posted by: bob | December 31, 2006 at 07:38 PM
I do not understand why Cook is not playing more minutes..Some people will say he is not a good defender but we as a team cannot stop anybody anyway..We need his offense..He is our best shooter..We should perhaps move to the Suns philosophy, which is to outscore every team, at least until LO comes back..because our defense really sucks..We cannot let our offense suck too!!
Posted by: keen observer | December 31, 2006 at 07:40 PM
BK,
Do we have a problem with our Center, I'd noticed that we don't have a legitimate center towards the end of the first half, is there something wrong with Brown
Arnold
Posted by: arnold | December 31, 2006 at 07:40 PM
Kobe and Smush leading the way.
Posted by: dan the man | December 31, 2006 at 07:41 PM
I'm not rooting for Dalembert, BK. I got a tight fantasy matchup and the other guy has Dalembert. I need a big night from bynum.
Posted by: bmurph | December 31, 2006 at 07:41 PM
AK,
You know what's funny? My wife had just finished saying that Korver looks like Kutcher when you posted that.
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 07:41 PM
Jack Haley just said Phil knows he's winning so he played 11 players in the first half and Lakers still up by 8. I can live with that. Why blow 'em out when you give the scrubs a New Years present ala Playing Time
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 07:42 PM
Lo Lo,
Let's see with your cork problems, you might want to start opening that bottle in about 12 minutes

Aaaaaaaand I'm back. Nice little vacation to visit the family, mercifully unable to watch the
Charlotte game, glad to be here watching the games with y'all again.
MoEv seems to be picking up the offense a bit more. Kobester draining ridiculous shots tonight.
GO LAKERS!!!

Oh no! I hope Kwame will be okay. We need his D.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:58 PM
For those who say Kobe never gets a call, rest assured it happens every once and a while. Andre Miller has a right to bitch about that blocking call.

That injury to Kwame DOES NOT LOOK GOOD.
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 07:59 PM
oh no! now kwame?
Posted by: nyla | December 31, 2006 at 07:59 PM

Posted by: Xodus | December 31, 2006 at 07:59 PM
Okay Bynum...it\\\'s all on you.
Play D like we know you can.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 07:59 PM
Good criminy, Kwame's ankle turn looked beyond painful. That could be wicked bad. Fingers crossed, people.
AK
Posted by: Andrew Kamenetzky | December 31, 2006 at 08:00 PM
Man, that hurt watching Kwame's twisted ankle, that's gonna take a long time to heal unfortunately.
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 08:00 PM
The fact is we can't stop anybody, so we should play both Cook and Vlad and win by outscoring teams..Especially the bad teams..
Posted by: keen observer | December 31, 2006 at 08:01 PM
Faith,
Are you drunk already? What's with all of the slashes(/) in your posts? HAHA!

Tell me with a straight face Miller wasn't there in time and out of the restricted area. And before you say anything, I just saw you giggle. haha
AK
Posted by: Andrew Kamenetzky | December 31, 2006 at 08:04 PM
I disagree, the Lakers CAN play some D, they just haven't shown it consistently. But when they turn u pthe D, it's really hard to score.
Nice layup by Luke and a pretty good night for Smush
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 08:04 PM
"Smush is a really bad passer"
bob - a couple of days ago.
WTF??
Posted by: dan the man | December 31, 2006 at 08:04 PM
Keen Observer,
That sounds like a plan. Yeah let's just outscore people. Nevermind Defense, Defense doesn't win championships. Keen Observer??? Please
Lets Go Lakers. Kwame is out but we are deep enough with Andrew resuming his duties as the Starter, he played a few with Kwame out at the beginning of the year. We'll be fine
Posted by: biglakerfan3408 | December 31, 2006 at 08:05 PM
Come on Luke...don\'t give him ANY space. None!
We can play D...we\'ve shown it. The thing about it is, we don\'t play it consistently and often don\'t put forth the effort. But when we do, it\'s a thing of beauty...usually during wins lol.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:05 PM
DAMN that Korver kid can SHOOT!
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 08:05 PM
Miller shuffled his feet on that replay to get in front of Kobe.
However, that foul on Dalembert wasn't there, Kobe got that one free.
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 08:05 PM
Lolo,
LOL...no I\'m in the proxyfoxy thing and whenever I type quotation marks or something like it...it makes up slashes.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:06 PM
Ak,
On my tivo is was pefectly clear Miller blinked his eyes, so therefore he was moving
Posted by: jfatty | December 31, 2006 at 08:06 PM
I sure as heck am not a doctor, but that ankle injury to Kwame looks like one of those 4-week deals. I hope I'm dead wrong. After all, according to Phil he's somewhat of a "pussy cat".
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 08:07 PM
Yup, and when he's not busy shooting, Korver Ashton is PUNK'ing your favorite celebrities.
Smush has always been a good passer, he doesn't throw that many bad passes except for the half-court ones

Jfatty,
You musta ordered one of them super Tivos. haha

Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 08:08 PM
biglakerfan, the fact is that we can't defend anybody..Even the bad teams out score us these days..I say we should play Cook more minutes..We need his offense badly..
Posted by: keen observer | December 31, 2006 at 08:09 PM
Something for Baby to improve...whenever he shoots, he assumes it\'s made (the way he shoots, wouldn\'t you? lol) but it\'d be better if he assumes otherwise and go after them. He\'s certainly tall enough and strong enough to do so.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:10 PM
Remember when Kobe dunked on Steve Nash? I'd like to see that again
Posted by: Ed | December 31, 2006 at 08:10 PM
dan the man
that is the first good pass I have seen from smush in a real long time.....i'm not haten just stating the truth...
It was a good pass =)
Posted by: bob | December 31, 2006 at 08:10 PM
Maybe Ronny will get back in the rotation now.
Posted by: RespectMyAuthoritah | December 31, 2006 at 08:13 PM
Right on bob. Glad to see you un-blocked.
Posted by: dan the man | December 31, 2006 at 08:14 PM
Crowd on the game now?
We\'ve been here since minute one! lol
Allright...I can\'t hide it, I am getting sloshed jk.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:15 PM
It's official. Kobe is, how you say, en fuego.
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 08:15 PM
That's now the second time Smush has successfully hurdled the courtside seats going for a loose ball. Aside from it being good effort, it's nice to know that if the refs decide for some strange reason to do an opening tip in that area, Smush can handle the jump ball. haha

Faith,
I don't know whats worse your ///slashes/// or Stargazins CAPS
Posted by: jfatty | December 31, 2006 at 08:15 PM
SOMETIMES ITS GOOD WHEN KOBE TAKES OVER.
JUST FOR LIKE 5 MINUTES OR SO.
Posted by: stargazin | December 31, 2006 at 08:15 PM
Brandon
stop smoking crack, smush is a bad passer....I have all the games on media center and I can't tell you how many time smush has thrown a pass right into the defenders hands....
Posted by: bob | December 31, 2006 at 08:16 PM
Bynum is getting tapped...great energy though!
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:17 PM
Keen Observer,
Yeah but if we abandon defense during the season, because we don;t do it well consistently, do you expect we can just flip a switch in the playoffs and somehow play shut down D? Not gonna happen. We have to continue to work on D, play it hard and it will come together. Offense is not a problem for the lakers. Think about it, they have the lowest fast break points in the league, yet they score in the top 5. Offense is clicking, we have to use the regular season to "Train" for the real season, the playoffs.
Posted by: biglakerfan3408 | December 31, 2006 at 08:17 PM
NOW WE'RE GOING SEE WHAT BABY CAN DO.
MAYBE RONNY TOO.
Posted by: stargazin | December 31, 2006 at 08:18 PM
Save the crack until midnight. lol
Posted by: dan the man | December 31, 2006 at 08:18 PM
I think those slashes are the equivalent of hiccups.
“I think (hiccup) that we should (hiccup) play better (hiccup) defense (burp).”
So yeah, Faith’s drunk. HAHA! J/K.
Posted by: LoLo | December 31, 2006 at 08:18 PM

JFATTY- ITS THE CAPS, FOR SURE.
Posted by: stargazin | December 31, 2006 at 08:19 PM
You see that pass from Smush into Andrew? I'm telling yah, Smush has very few turnovers. He also has very few assists.
He's not a good assist man but he's not a bad passer.
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 08:19 PM
Kwame injured? Crap ... who's gonna step up? Cookie? Baby Bynum? I know it's not gonna be Space Cadet ...

Posted by: stargazin | December 31, 2006 at 08:20 PM
I hope Kobe and Luke can get through the rest of this game without being rendered completely useless due to a case of the giggles. The two are cracking up over that miscommunication with the dunk.
AK
Posted by: Andrew Kamenetzky | December 31, 2006 at 08:20 PM
If you let 76ers score 30 in a 1/4 then you are not playing any defense..
Posted by: keen observer | December 31, 2006 at 08:23 PM
Hopefully they\'ll stop short of the giggles...we don\'t want them braiding each other\'s hair now lol.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:25 PM
Under 100 for the game (hopefully) that\'s defense.

Lakers don't even care about D right now, they're just having fun. Game has turned into extended garbage time
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 08:27 PM
Speaking of UCLA...since a lot of people have been bringing it up. Why isn't Farmar playing more, seeing as he's probably really good at countering the P&R...though it is a 5 man thing.
Posted by: Faith | December 31, 2006 at 08:27 PM
Yeah, you're K.O., but it does not mean you stop trying, or abandon your plan defensively, it is a long season, and we will get it right by April

Kwame Update from Lakers PR-
"Severe sprain, left ankle (8:51 3rd quarter). X Ray results are inconclusive. Brown will undergo further tests, including a CT scan tomorrow."
I'm no Trapper John, but that doesn't sound encouraging.

Sorry bob, but if you look at the turnover stats, Smush has some of the fewest turnovers for a point guard.

Tonights stat for Smush vs Andre Miller
Smush - 12 pts, 5 assists, 2 steals, 0 turnover - 26 minutes
Miller - 13 pts, 8 assists, 0 steals, 1 Turnover in 38 minutes
Once again (as in most of December), Smush ($1 million) outplays his counterpart (andre $9 million a year)
Posted by: Brandon | December 31, 2006 at 09:16 PM
Brandon
you don't have to agree with me, thats what makes this laker blog so great...hopefully smush will have better passes in the new year and all will be right in laker land =)
5 assists, 0 turnovers is great for smush...I always thought he would be a great SG. His mid range has been relly good this year . I don't worry about the turnovers because I know he gets a lot of steals. But the assists are a good thing to see.

What's going on between PJ and Andrew?
I seems the only reason PJ plays him is cause management wants Andrew on the floor...
Also, will the Laker consider picking up some big body for 10 - 15day contract?
