In Addition to the Terms of His Contract, He Just Inherited a Bitchin' Locker Entertainment System

As you may have heard, Devean George signed his name on the dotted line with Dallas. Gonna be weird seeing him in another uni. BK and/or I will add some more detailed thoughts on Devean's departure when we get a chance, but for now, we just wanted to keep everyone in the loop.

pity. at least he got a good payday out of it. Hope everything goes well for Devean (except when they play the Lakers)

OK, my bad. We evidently didn't need a vet 3 that can defend.
The Mavs sure did though. It'll probably take Kobe the whole game to get 63 now.

Lakers are getting the championship this year. I like this part of the year, when we dont see and hear from Kobe until training camp. He might not be able to use one leg, but I bet he his trianing how to play bball with just one leg and adding extra ridiculous moves to his game. Come this year, the Kobe lakers, no, I meant the LA Lakers will be one of the most deadly teams in the west. We have defensive players, we have three point threat, we got solid young players, we got Lamar (unique player in the league) playing a style no team can defend, you have teams comin up with how to play kobe, never going to happen. This season will show its not better to buy players to win championship (05-06 heat) but building a team is worth it, our new lakers, this is when Kobe's era really begins.

Can't wait for this season to kick off.

I dont think Kobe is worried about dropping 63 on whomever -- he has that innate ability to do that to anyone trying to defend him one on one..He needs just to get HOT and its ON.But that is the least of our worries. If the Lakers make a collective effort to defend individually and as a team, I think we will be fine..

Devean would go to the Mavs and their luxury suite locker rooms also a Western Conference foe -- but he's the enemy now.....

i read somewhere where our KOBESTER was on his way to hang out with the FIBA players and lend some veteran leadership/support..You right though, he's not sleeping.Kobe, never that!

I can't believe anybody thinks the Lakers are winning the title this year. That's a joke, right? I don't get it.

We'll be better, but win it? I can't see it happening, unless there are a lot of star players injured around the league.

Like, a lot.

Losing George could potentially hurt the D, but I can understand not wanting to pay him that money. He's been inconsistent.

Micheal A.

Hurt what D.

He didn't stop anybody from doing anything last year. I don't remember 1 George stop. The only thing I can remember is when T-MAC drove right to the whole on his Dumb A--. I am glad he is gone. This way he is no longer a option, so Phil doesn't have to look down the bench and have him as a option. This makes Phil's job easier. Trust me.

Devean is just another example of unmet potenetial. Hope he does well in Dallas, but he wasn't really helping us here.

peace out Devean ... thanks for the memories

now that we got that out of the way, have we discussed our newly-released schedule? (i don't know how new it is and since i'm too lazy to search for discussions on the matter, i'll talk about it now)

the NBA needs to find a new storyline. i thought "the handshake" put to bed the kobe vs. shaq hype, then i thought surely, the PHX vs. LAL rivalry would be the new primetime matchup... but no, the NBA is back up to it's old tricks pitting kobe versus shaq on Christmas.

that was so three years ago. the lakers don't deserve Christmas billing. and the heat are the world champs, why aren't they playing dallas on Christmas. what's so intriguing about a faded grudge match that has long been resolved (at least superficially)... is david stern running a league or a soap opera?

I wish we could have used him in a sign and trade deal, but, it was good having him on our team and I appreciate what he did during the championship years, he has played the same since he was a rookie and has not improved his game one bit. he would not have made a big impact on the team if he stayed.

lakersrydeordie,

Where'd you read about kobe going to joing FIBA, do you have a link? When his surgery was first announced it was stated that he'd still hang with team usa but haven't heard from him. I'd like for him to get an upclose and personal look at the pretenders, dwade and lebron, it should add fuel to his "i want to be better than anybody that has ever and will ever bounce a round ball" drive.

Deven George....take care of yourself, thanks for the contributions you made

Go Lakers

CBuck,

It's tv so it's got to be a soap opera. And yeah everyone thought the story was dead but now with Shaq sporting a new bling the media get's a chance to rekindle the beef....hey shaq kobe said he's not impressed with ya ring, dat dwade carried u....hey kobe, shaq said maybe if u hadn't snitched on him you'd have a 4th ring too...hey shaq, kobe said your mama...

LoL, u kno the deal, so y stress it.

F the Media, (umm except for AK/BK...hmm memories of AK/BK saying Kobe quit in game 7 are come storming back...umm yea including AK/BK )

Go Lakers

I remember George or someone that looked a lot like him, hitting a couple of critical 4th quarter, vet shots in game 4 last year. It wasn't all bad, but, OK, screw him, he's a Maverick.

CBuck

You have to ask what David Stern is running? It's showbiz. Kobe / Wade, Kobe / Shaq, Kobe / name goes here. It's still the best story the NBA has.

Look, there is not a single team in the league that is not beatable. The two teams that was in the finals, we can definetly beat them, even in a seven game series. The league wasn't like the past were you can pick several teams and say definetly this are going to be the top echelon of the teams in the league, nowadays you can pick the worst five teams in the league easily. What we have in the lakers are two players on the same team that are potential hard to match up, to stop both players you need to double team them when they are in attack mode. If you can name 5 teams were you have to double team their top two players consisently tell me.

If you can give me the best coaches in the league and Phil Jackson isn't in the top five, tell me. If you can tell me who has the best player in the league, just tell me. In this time of the year every team are opptimistic since the added and subtracted and hopefully the move they make will pay off at the end. I really don't see a team that has done that this offseason. For example, when Rasheed went to the pistons (even if it was done the second half of the season), people are that time knew the pistons were for real. Those are the kind of moves that drastically change a team immediately.

In asserting this season coming up, everyone has a chance to do damage, hoping that their moves will get them to the promise land. The lakers did their homework this season by adding and subtracting with critical thinking. They did not just make moves for the sake of them making moves (Hornets and Bulls). We got two solid players in Vlad and Evans, and they will immediately make impactful marks on the team. If you think the lakers don't have a chance to win this year, you must be joking. Let it be known, this lakers can win it all this year, believe in Phil and Kobe.

This is great, now Mike T. can propose a Chris Mihm for Devean George trade!

Chris Wilcox is supposed to sign with Sonics with at $3.6M only for one year, then trade him again before he becomes a free agent in '07, but up to now everything is left hanging and waiting for any offers that's according to insidehoops.com. Isn't it we were looking for players to guard PFs like Duncan, Nowitski, Diaw, Carmelo and KG. We could have used Wilcox ht. at 6'10" in addition of Vlad and LO. We could have offered Sonics: Luke & Sasha or Cook & Smush. This is a good replacement for D. George. It is not too late to make that offer.

CBuck,

I think it's not so much Shaq vs. Kobe in the sense that they hate each other as it is the two biggest draws in the league going at it at a time when everyone can watch. Plus, the whole D-Wade vs. Kobe thing is more interesting at this point. Not to mention Miami is the defending champs. I don't think there is a match-up in the entire league with more glitz and glamour than LA vs. Miami, and they are definitely suited for "prime time".

Thanks for the memories Devean, but you're not welcome here anymore. Anyways, I recollect the day that the Lakers overcame that huge, monstrous deficit to come back and win it.. against the same Mavs. I also recall that at the end of that game Devean threw the ball the length of the court toward the Mavs bench. How ironic. It just shows us that the NBA is all about business and money, perhaps a few abnomalities such as a Karl Malone with being exceptions, and that team loyalty isn't such a factor. To the older guys, was that always the case even back in the 60's? I just hope the Dodgers syndrome doesn't take effect and players that used to be here become all-stars elsewhere. Is it October yet??

I guess it's time to get rid of the sort'of old and bring in the new. I agree that the Lakers are looking better this year vs. last year. Of course, I also agree that this is not a championship team as of yet. Maybe a KG addition may do the trick, but who knows.

Devean, thanks for all the memories, it's just too bad you won't win another championship in your career, unless you jump ship and join another team...maybe pull a Gary Payton or something.

Well, lets get it crackin' Lakers, we got a ring to capture....

Razmataz

D. George - C-YA! Outside of knowing his place in our system, no lost. Went for the money in Dallas, huh? Glad someone took the bait, now we've got some wiggle room. Mitch step up, do something that makes us feel good! Make something happen! Faze 1 -Laker 4 life!

I've got to agree with Andrew Z. that Miami-LA is a sexy match up. The fact that Miami won it all added fuel to that dying fire. Now people can say that Kobe should have stayed with Shaq if he wanted more rings.

And it actually wouldn't be a totally incorrect statement. I love D-Wade's game but no one's going to convince me that Kobe's not better than he is. But, what people forget is that if Shaq had taken a paycut in LA he may have been in LA winning his 4th championship in LA.

Avery can now look forward to an additonal 20% in turnovers, and lots of I didn't foul him faces.

Devean was a good dude - but more times than not, he was a liabilty.

Good luck with this one Dallas.

I saw a rumor yesterday on Fox sports that the Lakers were looking to trade Devean George and Chris Mihm to Cleveland for Drew Gooden. What happened to this? I guess is dead now.

I will miss Devean's gigantic nostrils, but most of all, I will miss the tandem that he and Rick Fox made to bolster that 3 spot. They gave us great versatility, and filled in when we thought we had lost a great 3 in Glen Rice. He deserves a thanks, and a good welcome when he comes back to play us....and hopefully the Lakers then proceed to kick his tail.

wow,

I have no problem with you saying that the Lakers could compete with and (maybe) beat any team in a playoff series, it's just that over the course of 82 games I think there are a lot more teams out there that are better. That being said, let's work on getting in the playoffs before we start screaming ring.

some footage of turiaf playing in france...not really much to see, nice rebound and put back though

wow said: "Look, there is not a single team in the league that is not beatable. The two teams that was in the finals, we can definetly beat them, even in a seven game series."

With all due respect wow, i have to disagree. I do agree that anyone is beatable at any given time, but (and I hate saying this), I think the team to beat is still San Antonio... Now I know you're screaming HELL NO, but think about it - San Antonio hasn't gotten worse, they've gotten better. They have an eye for talent and always find people to complement their system. When we scour Europe for a player, he usually sucks, when they do, he's gold (almost every time). Most of all, they were hurt last year and nearly beat Dallas if it weren't for Ginobli's (an amazing player btw, even if he is the flop king) dumb and ill timed foul of Dirk Diggler. Even hurt, I KNOW they would've crushed Miami. Believe me, I was vehemently rooting against Miami; because I didn't want Shaq to get another ring and def not D-Wade to get one so soon. I became the biggest Dallas rooter on the planent and I was pissed when they imploded. Not that the refs weren't involved but they shouldn't have put themselves in that position. Anywho... I digress. San Antonio is a beast. Healthy, they are the team to beat. Less than healthy, still crazily, scarily formidible. I'm a die hard Laker/Kobe fan for life and I love some of our improvements, but San Antonio is head an shoulders above a lot of teams imo.

NEWSFLASH: Lakers and Heat are matching up on Christmas Day again for the third year in a row!!!! Surprise surprise.

lol TrueLakerFan. That Devean George video was hilarious

D George sucks and has always sucked. I've been hoping the Lakers would get rid of him for the past three or four years now. Sure he can shoot, sometimes. And he can play D, sometimes. But who wants a player who only shows up once every ten games or so and has absolutely no self-confidence?

BYE!!!

That's funny #4!!!!

Why isn't the Christmas Day game in LA? who really wants to see ignorant Miami fans rip on Kobe...on Christmas of all days!!! If it was any other day, I wouldn't care, but for it to be on Christmas is just ignorant! Wasn't it Stern who said last year's chants of "Kobe sucks" were inappropriate? I guess he changed his mind.

good luck to D GEORGE. i feel that VLAD RAD is an helluva upgrade from him atleast in the offensive end. as for D GEORGE'S defense...it really is overrated. as for the championship...every team has a chance at it come november. integrating our new players into the triangle will take some time. allstar break would be a great time to start catching fire and gain some momentum heading in to the playoffs. fortunately, the main guys in the roster (excluding kobe) will have that one year of experience in the offense plus that heartbreaking loss to the suns in the playoffs giving them more of that much needed experience to help them with MENTAL FORTITUDE. (MIKE T) all in all i like the moves that we made in the offseason. barring any major injuries, we will make it deep in to the playoffs this year.

Best wishes to Devean George.

Yes, he didn't quite pan out to be the next Scottie Pippen.

Yes, he didn't live up to his potential.

Yes, he was not very mentally tough.

Yes, he made errors that made one laugh out loud or scratch heads (depending on the situation).

But...

Regardless of all of D. George's limitations he did provide some value to the Lakers in his own limited way and would have done the same had the Lakers kept him.

He was a solid backup to Rick Fox early in his career. He would provide energy, hustle and a fairly reliable jumpshot whether he's starting or coming off the bench. But most importantly for this upcoming season...

Devean George was one of the few veterans (specially of the Triangle) who played for Phil Jackson. And it is well known that Jackson prefers playing veterans and/or guys that he is familiar with. Even with the Lakers three-peat ('00,'01 & '02) Phil Jackson used his former players like Ron Harper and Horace Grant and seriously lobbied for Scottie Pippen before Pippen signed with the Blazers.

All this shows that the Triangle is not an easy system to pick up and Phil really doesn't put his faith in a player right away, no matter how experienced they are. Case in point would be Aaron Mackie, Jim Jackson (from last season) or J.R. Rider and Mitch Richmond (from PJ's first stint with the Lakers). These were all very good NBA players but just could not manage to buy time on the court for Phil.

So, even if the Lakers acquire an athletic SF there is no guarantee that it would make an immediate impact on the court. Whereas D. George would have at least gotten some time just on the virtue of his experience in Phil's offensive and defensive schemes.

But oh well...we better move on and hope for the best. On a brighter note, Devean George was never going to be the final piece to the puzzle so hopefully the Lakers can either develop or trade for someone who can fill the role of the defensive stopper at the SF spot.

Go Lakers!

sixonezero said: "as for the championship...every team has a chance at it come november."

do you really think we can be San Antonio? I mean I'm as die hard as the next, but come on!!! Duncan, Parker, Ginobli, Bowen, Finley, Van Exel, Horry, Barry, plus their off season upgrades... not so sure we can beat them in a 7 games series. most teams will struggle against them, let alone us.

LakerTom

Don't HATE the PLAYA (me), HATE the 'GAME'. The GAME Mitch Kupchak and Buss pulled on you and ALL Laker fans throughout the nation. The SHELL game using smoke and mirrors to create an illusion of a oft injured SF that does not play teamball. A GAME of false playoff expectations using the former Donald Sterling model of combining a mediocre team, raising ticket prices and cutting televised games.

I've said it before, and will say it again. Any and ALL future NBA Championships Laker fans hoped to see again, were shipped off to South Florida in the form of the MOST DOMINANT Center of ALL TIME. YOU my friend, have been PLAYED!!!!!

Case Closed!!

OUT!!!
the Truth
and nothing but!!!

Been away from the blog a day or 2 - real life intrudes...and so much is happening.

Anyhow I don't think we need to worry about Devean's departure meaning we lose D at the 3 spot. LeBron and T-Mac aren't our real problem. To go anywhere near even a shot at the championship, we have to get by Phoenix, Dallas, and San Antone. And other than Marion (who plays a lot of 4 for them anyhow and is well handled by Lamar at either spot) the 3 slot is not the biggest threat from those teams.

Where we REALLY need some D is at the 1 spot. Can you say MVP Nash, Tony Parker, and Jason Terry? We MUST do better than Smush, Shammond, and an as-yet-too-inexperienced Farmar at the point if we're going to seriously contend with those three and go past the second round this year.

Even i recognize that San Antonio is the team to beat in the west. But there are really only two teams in the west, Dallas and San Antonio that will be the concensus as possibly winning the championship if a western team wins. They will be one and two respectively, apart from those two teams, the West is wide open. Houston (healthy Tmac), the Suns, the Lakers, and the Clippers should finish out the top six teams in the West.

What about the suns with Amare coming back? Well, the suns were number 1 in scoring this past season and that will not change next season, what the suns will get from Amare they didn't have last season was more of a physical defensive player that will rebound effectively and create more blocking opportunites and blocks for his team. Amare's points will not matter. With that said, only two ways to beat the suns with or without Amare, slow the tempo or outscore them, but if a team is smart they will slow the tempo, which the Lakers are effective in doing. Therefore, with a slow tempo like we saw in the Suns Lakers series Amare will make the suns halfcourt game more effecient but this is where Kwame has to earn his money (matching up against bigs and holding his own and he should). With that said i do think we can beat the suns if we play them in the playoffs, regular season doesn't mean nothing when you play the sun, only to have fun playing with them. In the playoffs, you play smart. Phil and Kobe, especially an underrated Kobe when it comes to playing postseason bball will play smart in the playoffs. If Kobe did not play smart with Shaq they would never had won three championship together.

The Rockets will always be a tough team with Tmac and the Yao that played in January, so they should be a marquee team in the league. But I can't see Tmac holding up again for this season, his back spasms never seem to go away, so good luck.

The only team I can't see the lakers beat is the spurs, however, Phil has always being a genius getting his team to play impossible opponents and do the impossibe, he almost did it with the Suns. Basically, beating the spurs will be left up to Phil doing his magic and crafting out a game plan to beat the Spurs, which is a reality. Phil and Kobe are familar with there system and their two monsters, Duncan and their coach.

I elaborated on the Suns, Rockets, and Spurs because matching up against them is diffucult including the Lakers, plus, you have to do alot of unconventional methods to slow their players down and their system.

I agree, its a bit premature aguing definitively how the Lakers will win the championship this year, but any team that faces this lakers have some thinking to do because you have to match up with the monster in Kobe, Lamar, a more balanced lakers with solid playoff experince (even Vlad and Evans are seasoned players playing deep in playoff atmosphere) and the game master in Phil. For those reasons, am banking on the lakers bringing that championship where it belongs.

marc-

i was referring to the optimism that every team has in the beginning of the season. thats why my explanation for the lakers being gauged at allstar break to see how their progress is. i understand how good the spurs are, by the way. but out of all the guys you mentioned on the spurs roster, half of those guys are in the twilight of their careers. just as much as the lakers have to wish for their guys being healthy all year, the spurs could be hobbled at the right time. nobody called the mavs to go to the finals last year. miami as well. everybody thought it was going to be spurs and detroit. my point is we can sit here and compare how good our team is to other teams on paper. but i do believe that just as any team that has kobe bryant on it has a chance to go to the championship.

R. G. Gaznabi,

You are absolutely correct with your assessment of Devean. He gave the Lakers extra punch as a 2nd stringer. He was given an opportunity to shine when the four stars were playing with him and he failed to grab that opportunity, he was not aggressive enough in his layups, rebound and defense when the guards were all concentrated on those four guys. Nonetheless, let's give him credit for his contribution during the championship and he can be the player that Dallas needs who has the been in the Championship.

My problem with Mitch K., he did not use the contract of George and our extra guards to obtain a legitimate PF or PG. On the other hand, we may be imagining problems that may not exist, we're just in quandary, not knowing how Williams, Evans, Smush and Farmar will perform, so we want immediate answers from the unknown. The preseason games will give us an idea about our team and that's two months of speculating our materials.

The best players in the past determine their games during off season, practicing the fundamentals freethrow shooting, mid range shots, get extra help from a personal coach, speaking of the best players. Currently, we have four players who are indisposed but it's ok, they could catch up by October except for Mihm who has not been playing since March.

U.S. team impressive in scrimmage
/ Associated Press
Posted: 26 minutes ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) - If the Americans play as well as they did at times Tuesday night, they might not even miss the guy sitting behind the basket.

The U.S. team made an impressive debut, winning all four quarters of a scrimmage against Puerto Rico before a Thomas & Mack Center crowd that included injured teammate Kobe Bryant.
Bryant, unable to play in the upcoming world championships after undergoing knee surgery last month, made his first appearance at training camp and sat with USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo about five rows behind the basket.

And watching Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade put on a show reminded Bryant - who also had to pull out of before the 2004 Olympics while dealing with a sexual assault trial - how much he wanted to be a part of the team.

"It's tough, it's really tough," Bryant said after the game. "Especially coming, seeing guys playing, competing and doing what they did today.

"I've been looking forward to this. Since I spoke with Mr. Colangelo on the phone I've been looking forward to it, coming out here and playing and competing. It's very upsetting."

Even without the NBA's leading scorer, the Americans had several impressive spurts during the four-quarter scrimmage. Scores were reset at the start of each period, otherwise the Americans would have won 116-82.

U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski stressed earlier Tuesday that the scrimmage was nothing more than a practice, but he found his players took it more seriously than that.

"I like the fact, I think it meant something," Krzyzewski said. "I thought actually a couple of guys were nervous in a good way. That means it means something. I thought they tried to play every possession."

The U.S. held a Puerto Rican team that included Orlando guard Carlos Arroyo without a point for more than 3 minutes to open the second quarter. The most impressive stretch came during the third period, when James, Wade and Dwight Howard all threw down powerful dunks - at the basket right in front of Bryant.

"It's amazing, it's fun to watch," Bryant said. "They come at you in waves. It's nonstop, the pressure that they put on fullcourt, quick hands, quick feet that they have."

The scrimmage marked the first time the teams were together since the Puerto Ricans routed the Americans 92-73 during preliminary round play at the 2004 Olympics.

Anthony was on that U.S. team, and hasn't forgotten about his Olympic debut.

"I remember like it was yesterday," he said after a morning practice. "I can't forget that ... whipping."

He guaranteed a competitive atmosphere, then went out and was the best player on the floor. He scored 23 points and shot 10-for-13 from the floor while helping spearhead the strong defensive effort to begin the second quarter.

Anthony said the plan was to build on a strong finish to the first quarter by the previous unit. Krzyzewski played seven players in the first and third quarters, and the other eight in the other two.

"We tried to learn from their mistakes and I think it helped us in the second quarter," Anthony said.

James added 20 points. All 15 players scored for the Americans.

Arroyo scored 17 points for the Puerto Ricans, including a 3-point shot just before the buzzer at the end of the second quarter. Rick Apodaca, who played at Hofstra, added 13 points.

The teams meet again Thursday night in an exhibition game, and face each other in their opening game at the world championships on Aug. 19 in Sapporo.

Bryant could be there at some point. He said he wasn't planning to travel to Asia while continuing to rehab his knee, but Colangelo said Nike would like Bryant to make a promotional appearance in Japan.

But he'll have to wait at least another year before making his U.S. debut.

"It's really, really tough," Bryant said. "Just have to do what I have to do, I guess."
----------------

It is better for Kobe not to travel, but I guess he has to at least make an appearance in Japan.

I wished we could have gotten someone in a sign and trade with Devean and another Lakers player packaged together, but if all Devean could get was a one year $2 million deal, then that tells me that there was not too much interest in him from other teams to begin with.

There were more than a half dozen teams that inquired about sign-and-trade possibilities involving Harrington before the list was narrowed to Indiana and Golden State last month. That list included the Los Angeles Lakers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Chicago Bulls, the Detroit Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks.

IS HARRINGTON STILL A POSSIBLITY?

deavon george reminds me of that video game donkey kong on nintendo

Devean Who?

Who cares about devean george? Once a scrub, always a scrub, he's a scrub. Does nothing to earn his money glad he's gone lakers will be better off without him.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I think that Devean was worth 2.1 million a year for two years. If that was the price for keeping him then I think we should have found a way to do it.

Devean was a tough role player till he cashed out in his last contract. Last year was his best in like 2 or 3 years, but even then, he was terribly inconsistent.

ESPN continues to show their HATE for Kobe, Kobe cannot even go watch a practice game without them saying something negative about Kobe. This is part of an insider report:

LAS VEGAS -- Kobe Bryant's choice of pronouns was somewhat revealing Tuesday as he made his first appearance with Team USA.
He didn't sound like a member of the team, even though he technically still is one.

Bryant watched from the fifth row of the stands as the American team played its first scrimmage against another national team, looking especially sharp defensively in defeating Puerto Rico 116-82 behind 23 points from Carmelo Anthony and 20 from LeBron James.
For most of the game, Bryant was seated with team director Jerry Colangelo and agent Rob Pelinka, and he did not interact with the players on the bench during the game, in the locker room prior to tipoff, or on the court following the final buzzer.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&id=2536800&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba%2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dsheridan_chris%26id%3d2536800
-------

Ok is this guy there all the time? Does he know what goes on with him NOT around? It is always a negative with ESPN concerning Kobe is just plain ridiculous.

------

And this is a more positive note to Kobe's visit:

KOBE SHOWS SUPPORT

L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant showed up today to support his USA teammates. Bryant, who is unable to participate this summer due to having minor surgery on his knee, spoke with the media following the game and said that he will not be travelling with the team when it heads to Asia, but rather will stay home to rehabilitate his injured knee.

"I'll be (at home) doing my therapy and rehab, but I'll be talking with the guys and communicating with them and wishing them all the best."

USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo clarified that Bryant could be present in Japan with the team, but that it's uncertain at this time.

"Understand one thing regarding the trip," Colangelo said. "Kobe may be over there for a period of time; That's still to be determined. He's got some commitments: Nike would like him to be there for a period of time. I'm sure we'll see him; I'm not quite sure if he knows at this point when that's going to be, but probably in Japan."

And how did Bryant think his teammates played today, in preparation for that trip to Japan?

"They looked wonderful," he said. They're all just playing well together and doing their thing defensively. I think defensively is really an area of emphasis. Guys are getting after it, creating turnover situations and easy opportunities.

"I think the waves with which they play is something that's amazing and it's fun to watch. They come at you in waves and it's non-stop -- the pressure that they put on full-court; quick hands, quick feet that they have one through five out there on the floor. Everybody's extremely quick and athletic and physically gifted."

http://www.nba.com/usabasketball/blog.html

----
But I guess ESPN doesn't see anything but negative. It seems that it hurts them, that eventhough Kobe is not on the team and that they promote their two jewels like no end. Kobe is still the main guy.

Like always Kobe is always in a no win situation with the media, especially ESPN.

Oh by the way, ESPN and the media in general should come up with different things to put Kobe down. The he is not a team player, he is selfish, he has no friends, no player wants to play with him. These comments are getting to OLD and are so predictable.

Hey I can be a journalist if I wanted to since all the sheep media is always saying the same thing over and over again. Have creativity, get better lines than the same old thing.

Totally agree with you there Lakofan!

BSPN strikes again!

Best wishes D. George....
Even though you were incosistent..but you sure gave us some huge 3s, jumpers, offensive/defensive rebounds, and dunks.

See yah on the court...but this time, you'll be defending kobe. hehehe

Good that D.GEROGE is gone. Bad that we did not got anything back. wtf

Lakerfan, you should email those pics/links to the writer of that biased, ignorant article. Kobe hate knows no bounds.

What's it about the Lakers that makes these adequate players into name players? I mean I'm probably just being egocentric, but outside of LA, no one knew who Rush was (albeit he was drafted by the Lakers), Jumaine Jones (well at least enough to be trade bait lol), and love Fish but even Fish in my opinion. Guys that raised their value playing here, but don't necessarily pan out outside of LA. What's up with that? Again, love Fish, but Mr. 04 should have been a GS starter, and wasn't for the most part...not an impact like he was for the Lakers. George in my opinion wouldn't be worth what he was if he didn't play here. So good luck D George, thanks for all you did for the team. Again, I'm probably just being egocentric...I'm also probably overlooking the fact that these guys probably were elevated not so much cause they were here, but cause they won here (well outside of JJ). Then the question becomes, what's it about the team/the franchise that elevated their game? Haha.

Lakofan, you're preaching to the preacher...As I recall, even Coach K himself said how much value Kobe would have in terms of the team even for just the veteranism/teaching standpoint. As I recall the current media main man himself said he'll strive to learn D from Kobe himself this offseason. In any case maybe they're right, maybe Kobe "doesn't interact" maybe we really are blinded by our purple and gold goggles (sarcasm alert lol).

can anyone please copy/paste the espn INSIDER article on kobe supposedly "not interacting with the team"

thanks.

Josh, looks like Harrington is still attainable...he just fired his agent. Course the money factor is still a question...it has to come from someone.

http://www.ajc.com/wireless/content/sports/hawks/stories/0802hawks.html

lakofan,

I helped a sista out and emailed him too.

Kobe24,

there's no use in emailing the pics to that writer, it will be a waste of time. He like many will not publish anything in favor of Kobe or say they were wrong.

It's a shame that people will read that article on line and on the magazine and continue to form this horrible image of Kobe. ESPN works on that it seems they get paid to trash Kobe and elevate their darling players.

------------

Faith,

It is ESPN's job to hate on Kobe.

I read an article where Dirk said that Kobe was going to be missed that the world needed to see him play, but the U.S still had good player.

Mr. Colangelo said today that Kobe needed to go to Japan to do press etc.

But to ESPN and the general media they HATE to read those things. They want their JEWELS to be the main guys, but ohhhh so sorry, even if they are the IT boys, the MAIN MAN is Kobe Bryant, sooo sorryyy

Am I old school or what here ? 4.2 mil for 2 years ??? Thats nothing for a vet with tri-angle experience !!! Smart move for the Mavs !

Lakofan,

I know he'll never publish anything or admit he was wrong, but atleast just for the satisfaction of putting it in his face. I mean if i was a writer, I'd make sure I get the facts straight before I publish something like that.

Yea Faith I saw that and I guess its possible but who to trade....

I e-mailed Sheridan too, but he ALWAYS writes in an unapproving manor of anything Kobe does, so don't be too surprised when he continues to write negative things.

I don't believe ESPN hates Kobe, I just think that on espn, just like everywhere else kobe is a polarizing figure who writers (which are the ones that compose espn), just like fans, either love or hate. He just inspires such a strong sense of opinion, regarless of whether it is positive or negative. It seems that it is impossible to eliminate that love/hate for many of the writers. Eric Neel for example writes positive things in general about Kobe, the Lakers, and especially the Dodgers. Bill Simmons, until recently writes really scathing things, but this past year reluctantly wrote some nice things. Marc Stein writes both postive and negative things. Charley Rosen on Foxsports.com always writes awful one-sided views of kobe, but DIME tends to be extremely complimentary of Kobe.

Because we like him, the opinions we don't agree with stick out like sore thumbs. But I don't think that necessarily means that there is some conspiracy at ESPN, or any other network for that matter, to be against any one player/team/sport/etc.

I really think we could use Al Harrington is someone that could definetly help out the Lakers. The Hawks dont really have a good C and would be losing a F so here is what I propose.
LAKERS(GET): Al Harington
HAWKS(GET): Mihm,Cook,and Walton
You could also take out Walton and put in McKie if the Hawks dont want to many big men but then again they dont really have any great big men other than Harrington. They could benefit from these guys and their "vet" experience. We would then clear out 3 spots on our rosters and if the trade goes through then we would have freed up 1-2 spots on our 15 man roster. This way we could keep one of our potential future Laker players. Which would benefit the Laker future since we open up the spot from George and the 3 players we would have to trade to balance out salaries. This means 3-4 spot are available for roster space since Mihm,Cook,Walton were in Phil's constant rotation while Mckie was on the inactive list. If you check out the Lakers roster at the NBA website you will notice that they have 20 players on their roster which we cant have so some will have to be released if there is no trade. If anything I think we could just buyout McKie's contract and drop guys like Wafer and Pinnock. These are my 15 with the current players.
Kwame Brown
Kobe Bryant
Andrew Bynum
Brian Cook
Maurice Evans
Aaron McKie
Chris Mihm
Lamar Odom
Smush Parker
Vladimir Radmanovic
Ronny Turiaf
Sasha Vujacic
Luke Walton
Shammond Williams
?????????????
We could let JJ and Green walk off into FA and cut Pinnock. The last guy on my 15 man roster is a bit of a tossup but our lineups remain the same as last season with just Vlad in the rotation and George out of it. The difference is the chemistry and hopefully the experience that will make this squad a 50+ win season. Getting Harrington would probably gurantee us a 50+ win season and we would be a more serious contender in the West.

By the way im almost positive that Kobe will show up in Japan. It wont necessarily be strictly for the benefit of Nike but also to help out his image. 06/07 will be a new chapter for Kobe. He will finally have an above "decent" team. He will take his team once again to the playoffs. His jersey will be the #1 seller cuz of new number and I will be doing my share by purchasing about 5 of them LOL. There will always be haters and Kobe knows about it. Remember his Nike commercial?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4QWn-KhS1-0&search=kobe%20nike%20commercial

I also found another one that I had forgotten about. It was hilarious. 12yr old kid vs. Kobe who wins? LOL check it ou.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_yJszb4dfGw&mode=related&search=kobe%20nike%20commercial

Actually, I think if Stoudamire had been healthy last year, Phoenix would have won. I'll be curious to see how the season goes, but I'm far from ready to hand it to San Antonio. I don't think they score enough. They'll need someone other than Duncan and Parker to hit shots.

Weird.

People have been talking about trading Devean George for years, but he's always been a real benefit to our team.

I'm going to miss him.

It'll be weird seeing him playing for the Mavs.

I hate Dallas.

GO LAKERS!

It's business. ESPN markets Wade & James as the good guys and Kobe as the bad guy.

Example. ESPN has been hyping Danica Patrick for the last year, despite no wins or even close calls this year. The other day, she threw what amounted to a 5-year old's temper tantrum, stamping her feet and kicking over things. I have seen this video ONCE on ESPN since Sunday.

Do think they might have found time to play a video of Kobe acting like a spoiled brat more than a handful of times over the course of three days? If you're down with the E, they take care of you. If not, it's open season.

Yo Laker Bloggers! Is it ME or does Kobe have a new tattoo?! I was on my yahoo and I came across this picture of Kobe taken no more than a couple days ago at the Team USA court.
The tat is question is on his right forearm. Peep the link you see for yourself:
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2006/Aug-02-Wed-2006/photos/kobe.jpg

I Wonder what it is?

Elyse,

Well said....also just to play devil's advocate. Tbe pics posted on this board of kobe only show him interacting with one player, carmelo anthony. So the writer was mostly right in saying kobe didn't chill with the rest of the team.

I love kobe but not for who he is off the court...simply because i dnt know who he is off the court...all i know is who he is on the court and that is enough for me. Frankly I'd rather see him sit home and rehab the knee also. Half the world hates kobe and I think it's about time he and his fans say F*** that half. I think kobe would be better off if he stoped trying hard to please everyone and rather direct all his energy into the one thing he's always wanted....to be the G.O.A.T.

Or in another man's word...it's about time you ditched the force and embrace the dark side Kobe. The jedi would have you believe that a quest for absolute power, ambition, are bad and you should work for the good of the team. And who is the team, the Jedi...they want that power just as you do and they're only trying to bring you down Kobe...so say F*** the media, F*** the haters, and embrace the dark side...it's the only way you can be all you want to be...you know it has been said the dark side leads to unbelievable powers such as winning 4 rings with crappy teammates that won't start on any other team in the league...making haters choke....having the media suck up to you for fear of losing they're paycheck if the hottest ticket in town won't give them exclusives....embrace the dark side kobe...listen to the mamba within: http://www.blacksportsonline.com/rlkobe.html

lakofan,
Thanks for those pictures of KOBE24 at the Team USA game/practice. I always felt (as pretty much all of us here agree) that ESPN tends to always unfairly portray Kobe as this loner, negative, desrtuctive, and evil person. And as much as I try to be optimistic towards this sad fact, you just showed dead-on proof. Good Job!
p.s. Can't wait for the damn season to start already!

PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE

I stopped by a Music, Movie and Video Game Exchange Store after work yesterday to see what movies they had available for purchase. To my surprise, someone had exchanged copies of the NBA Championship DVD Collections for the 1999-2000 and 2001-2002 NBA Seasons. I’ve heard about these DVD’s, however, I have never seen one personally. If you haven’t seen a copy of these two in particular, or if it has been a while since you’ve viewed them, I recommend that you find a copy and watch them BEFORE the upcoming season. I was partially surprised, as well as, reminded of a few things concerning the Lakers as I watched both of these last night.

First, I was partially surprised by the commentary and interviews which happened behind the scenes. I wish it would be possible to hold a viewing of all 3 DVD’s from the Lakers 3-Peat, and invite all of the people which were a part of team during that time. After watching all 3 in their entirety, I would then like to conduct a forum to discuss them. My first question would be…Do you recall making those statements? My second question would be…Were you being honest when you made those statements?

The reason why I would ask those questions…and please forgive me for rehashing old topics…is because IF you can remember making those statements, and you were being honest at the time you made them….How do you explain your current positions and everything that transpired since those 3 seasons? I don’t want to spend this whole post talking about the DVD’s. In fact, I could probably dedicate several posts to each one. Instead, I want to encourage each of you which visit this web-blog to go out and get a copy and watch them. I would like to just mention a few things that I saw or heard while watching them. In one scene Shaq was literally carrying Kobe on his back as he walked down the hall-way during the Finals. In another scene, Shaq and Kobe are having a short moment of reflection where Shaq called Kobe the best ever and Kobe returned the sentiment with calling Shaq the most dominant ever. In yet another scene (actually 2 different years) Magic is scene taking a picture with both Shaq and Kobe and Magic stated that they were heading towards a dynasty which could last for possibly 10 years straight. Then there was one real surprising commentary which included several of the coaching staff and Brian Shaw speaking on the evolution of Kobe Bryant. In that commentary, Kobe is compared to Michael Jordan as well as praised for finally realizing how to maximize his talent while remaining a part of the team concept. Then, quite possibly the most surprising commentary was by Phil Jackson in which he recounts a conversation he had with Kobe in reference to him being potentially un-coachable. He states that he asked kobe if he thought he was uncoachable. Kobe responded (he states) that he was definitely uncoachable as well as stubborn. Phil then smiled and compared that same attitude to that of Michael Jordan and stated that that is the single most comparable attribute the two share. There are other scenes of game highlights in which Kobe is scene doing some the exact same plays that D-Wade did this season. It’s amazing how much you forget until you watch the history. In retro-spect, it really helps to keep things in perspective as to what is currently happening right now.

Now that I’ve taken a moment to reflect on the past, I would like to talk about the present. First, let me say a few parting words about Mr. George as he parts ways with the Lakers organization. Devean, it was really a treat having on as a part of this team. Although, their were some which criticized you at times because of your inconsistent production, I always like your attitude. You were a true professional in LA and I wish you all the best. As you part, I feel the same way about you as I did Rick Fox, Robert Horry and even little Ty Lue……You may not have played the major roles of Shaquille or Kobe, but your part was necessary and in your own way, you helped the Lakers achieve something special. Once, again, congratulations on your new opportunity and I wish you all the best. After watching the DVD from the 3rd championship season, the first question that came to mind was, “Why again, aren’t Kobe, Shaq and Phil still together?” Seriously, after watching the 3rd installment, I can see no reason why they weren’t able to remain just as dominant a “combo”. In fact, currently, the same way in which Dwayne Wade, Shaq and Pat Riley seem to coexist right, looks very similar to the way Kobe, Shaq and Phil were back then. However, things do change, (which I hope people remember just in case they one day change in Miami), yet the GAME must continue to be played.

Now, I would like to take a few minutes to talk about the future. Devean George is the last link (I believe) to the past for this Lakers team (Kobe and Phil not included). I think it is fitting that they have reached this new beginning. I must admit that after watching both of those DVD’s last night, I had a very strange feeling come over me as it relates to the Lakers right now. It was a feeling of excitement, mixed with anticipation. I realize many will laugh at the notion I am about to make, but I honestly feel that the Lakers are heading in the direction of another championship. I am not talking about 2 or 3 years from now. I am suggesting that they may challenge for the title this upcoming season. Call it a hunch or wishful thinking; I just simply have a really good feeling about the near future for this team. Listening to the commentary as they talked during the summer and into that first season, it could be seen that they were committed to the same goal that year. They were up to the challenge despite having to deal with an uncomfortable learning curve. The pre-season that year was horrific for the Lakers, plus, they started that season with Kobe on the sidelines for 8 weeks. Yet, they ended that season with 67 wins including 3 major winning streaks (1 starting at the beginning of the season.). One commentary that struck me was during the playoffs. It was stated that the Lakers appeared invincible at times because as they moved the basketball around to find the open man, they were virtually impossible to guard. In one sequence the ball touched all 5 players including Kobe passing up on an open 3 pointer….to find a better shot at the basket. What made them so tough was their understanding of team and working off of double teams and ball-movement. In many ways, what they were able to do those 3 years in being able to work the ball around and find the best shots, can be done this next season.

Imagine a sequence in which the Lakers come down the court with Smush Parker, Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, Vlade Radmanovic, and Kwame Brown. Lamar runs the point and passes the ball to Kwame in the post. Kwame receives the trap and passes out to Smush, who is in the corner. The defense quickly responds by running out at him so he passes over to Lamar who is still at the top. Lamar then kicks the ball to the weak side where Kobe is sitting on the other post. Kobe receives a double team and passes back out to Vlade who is left open because of all the movement. Vlade sinks the triple….and the opposing team is left wondering what they can do to defend this team.

Blaze1bx,

The tatoo that Kobe has is his daughter's name, Natalia Diamante, I imagine now he wrote Gianna's name.

You Laker lovers are dreamers. This ruined-by-Kobe franchise will go maybe 39-43. Kobe is the most selfish player in B-ball history!!

Lakeofan,
Again, thnak you for the good insights. I assumed it was his daughters name or something but wasn't sure. It's funny how before the whole Colorado situation happened (pre-kobe tats), I remember telling myself I dont ever see Kobe getting a tattoo. FOr one, he didn't seem like the tattoo type (if that even exists or makes sense), but more so, I thought he'd liked being different from everyone else coming into the league with tats all over.
THen again, I never thought I'd get one either and now i'm gettign ready for a half-sleeve! lol
Life can be funny sometimes....

Kinda late chiming in on this, but C Buck's right. I'm done with Lakers/Heat on Christmas...although the Lakers white and Heat red jerseys accentuate the theme pretty well.

Let's try some Cleveland/Miami, D Stern!!

//charles

Dave

He is also the best basketball player in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dave shaugnessy- 39-43

another sad, jealous laker/kobe hater trying to make a name for himself on the famous laker blog. deep down you find yourself getting on the lakers blog because you like the team. in fact, love the team. especially kobe. we all see right through it. you just want acceptance from everyone...so next time go about it in a more constructive manner instead of pouting like a little 5 year old girl who didnt get a pony for her birthday.

Lakers......10th in the west.....

Shaq

How is that possible. 10TH. Who else is stacked at every possion besides us??????????????

Men it does not take much to get you guys going.. Ok Chris "mediocre writer" Sheridan is a decomposing heap of journalist, so what? The man is a sensationalist and chooses to see what he sees. We were not there, so we don't know if he is lieing or not. Chris Sheeridiot is not a nobody, leave him be.

Haha, Dave Shaughngessy, showing up as shaq....how childish are you?

Next hater please.

A bit off the thread but does anyone know how many assistant coaches can be on the front bench this upcoming season? It used to be three, per NBA rules, which is one of the reasons that Tex was moved to consultant a few years back - so Kurt could come on the front bench. Now we got Cleamons again, plus Rambis, Hamblin and Shaw. That's four full assistants.

Is Tex for sure coming back for another year as a consultant? Is Kareem coming back as a special assistant? What about Hodges?

The reason I'm asking this coaching stuff is that I kind of agree with some of the more positive assessments out there. I don't know about title talk but I think there's going to be a lot of coaching going on this season - young players who are going to buy into the system.

We all know that there isn't the money for any meaningful acquisitions... and nobody out there's hot to trade with us.

That leaves working with the guys we got. Vlad will be a big help in spreading the floor - as long as he figures out the triple post. Devean was a nice guy with ability but it just didn't pay off in the way it should have - they gave him every oppportunity to succeed.

Dave M

Shady,

Are you sure you like an expensive and an oldie Mckie than a rookie but active J. Pinnock? Have you seen Danilo played, you might want to wait for the preseason game before cutting them?

JJ,

I share your vision. Let's hope my man smush regains his shooting touch so the defense does run at him when he's in the corner otherwise we're back to being mediocre. Have no fear though, I truly believe this team will take on the personality of it's leader, kobe. They want to win so bad...and it only helps to have an organization that doesn't tolerate losing behind you.

One thing i've always been against is lamar playing the point, and my biggest argument is that he was so effective in the post in the phoenix series. But now that i think about it, he also did a lot of ball handling in that series. Can you say point power forward anyone?

06/07 coming soon...Bring it on
Go Lakers

I know I'm writing a novel, not a blog. That's why nobody reads it. You just read pages 334-339.

I have a problem being clear and concise.

dave shaughnessy and shaq

You are just the same person... We are not that stupid...

You can change your name a million times but it shows, man...

So be a man and go to where you belong....and that is the sewers...

JJ (my namesake) -

The only problem with your scenario at the end of that lonnnnng post is that the defense will not run at Smush because he can't shoot accurately from the corner (or anywhere). Until we get one capable point guard instead of six wannabes, we are a 6-to-8 team at best in the west. Get us a real PG (or wait a year til Farmar is ready), and we're in the top 4. Truth!

Jay Jay

wasabi -

it's never too late to agree with me. b/c i'm right!

we had some great NBA playoff games this past season, some great basketball was played... and yet, the league falls back on friviolous storylines to promote the game.

it's ridiculous. if LAL must play on Christmas, i prefer PHX as an opponent. at least that makes sense... at the very least, if there is a positive in this, this proves that Kobe is still the biggest draw/star in the league.

i'd figured by now, lebron would get Christmas day but still gave it to Kobe v. Shaq.

FELLOW LAKER bloggers do not even concede dignifying any negativety posted here by the Haters -- we all know ignorance is bliss.

moving right along -- I don't see us trading anyone until there has been an evaluation of what we are truly working with and by the time camp reconvenes, the coaches will have a better feel for what we need to address any of our pressing needs.

I am prepared to wait and see but hell, don't have a choice -- camp doesnt open for another 60 some odd days hopefully the fellas are doing whatever is necessary to better their games on an individual level.

What's with this Kobe-hating Chris Sheridan's article about Kobe calling US team "they" instead of "we"?

He finds the weirdest way of 'analyzing' Kobe's comment... and it's plain to see that Sheridan just wanted to bash Kobe any way he can.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&id=2536800

Faith,
"What's it about the Lakers that makes these adequate players into name players?"

Winning championships/playing in finals does that, because they get so much more exposure. As does being a member of one of the premier (from a publicity standpoint) organizations in the league. And having teammates like Shaq and Kobe makes mediocre players look better, because Shaq and Kobe absorb so much of the opponents' defensive pressure. But winning titles is the single biggest item. Although I don't know that Rush or Fisher should be considered "name players."

As far as trying to keep Devean as a Laker, when was he going to play? Too many people ahead of him on the depth roster at SF at this point.

I was a little disappointed with the Christmas Day match-up again,

then I thought about the Shaq v. Bynum match-up! Do you guys remember that! That was the single most amazing moment of the season for me. Everyone kind of expected Bynum to get smashed if he was put against Shaq, but when the 18 year old actually got up p____d off and dunked on Shaq, I loved it. Anyway, maybe it will be a good test for the Lakers where they can measure themselves.

Ken.

i have a question for the oldtimers (i'm 17 heh liked the lakers ever since i bought NBA LIVE 99 ---this was before i even followed the NBA)

how were the lakers of yesteryear able to put together teams of HOFs and not get killed by the salary cap??

i started thinking about that because i was thinking about the current lakers and, i couldnt see the lakers holding on to all their peices over the next few years without serious cap trouble

"You Laker lovers are dreamers. This ruined-by-Kobe franchise will go maybe 39-43. Kobe is the most selfish player in B-ball history!!"

i really don't understand why people still say kobe ruined the lakers and is a selfish player and yet say the total opposite of shaq. as much as people like to say kobe was only good because he had shaq, well you can look at how he's dominated without him to see that that's false. how about we put it this way. can shaq be effective without an imposing wing player? i mean he did have penny, kobe and now wade to help him out throughout his career. he's never had to do it himself. and if you'll recall when kobe and shaq were in their first couple of years together before kobe developed they were a mediocre team. now if you want to talk about selfish players. shaq demanding 30 mil a year from the lakers? calling out the owner of the team (his f**king) boss during a game and asking if he was going to pay him now. shaq wasn't backing down from his demand of 30 mil and that's the only reason the lakers had to get rid of him. they knew that if they shelled out 30 mil a year to shaq and maxed out kobe they wouldn't have anything left to put around them. and it would seriously screw them in the future. now shaq comes out looking rosy because he embraces wade and signs a contract at 20 mil. i think he just finally realized that he can't do it himself and needs wade and other players around him so he was willing to take a pay cut. what a freaking hypocrit. and if you'll recall from that summer... kobe didnt really say anything about the matter, only that he was weighin his options of signing elsewhere while shaq was ripping into the organization, kobe and everyone inbetween. he's continued to rip the laker organization as well as kobe while kobe has taken the high road and kept his mouth shut. he completely dissed phil by saying riley was the best coach hes ever had even though phil completely backed him throughout his time in la and made him great. without phil shaq never wins a championship. and yet after all that there is never any negative news about shaq. thats bull

New nba rules:

NEW YORK, August 2, 2006 – The National Basketball Association has enacted several significant rules changes that will go into effect for the upcoming 2006-07 season:
Playoff Seeding:

The first four seeds in each conference will continue to be given to the three division winners and the team with the next best regular season record, but these four teams will now be seeded in order of their regular season records. Among other things, this change will ensure that the two teams with the best records in the conference will not meet earlier than the Conference Finals.
Shortening Timeouts:

If a team has two 60 second timeouts left in the last two minutes of regulation or in overtime, one of the two timeouts will be shortened to a 20 second timeout.

Instead of having three 60 second timeouts in overtime, teams will have two 60's and one 20 second timeout. Teams will no longer be permitted to carry over a 20 second timeout from regulation into overtime.
Increase in Playoff Roster Size:

Playoff roster size will be expanded from 13 to 15 players, with each team designating 12 active players and up to three inactive players prior to each game.
“Our owners are intent on making the playoff seeding more fair for all teams going forward and in quickening the pace of the end of games,” said Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations. “The Board also thought it made sense to allow teams to utilize the same 15-man roster in the playoffs that they use during the regular season.”

The rules changes were recommended by the Rules and Competition Committee at its annual meeting in June, and approved this week by a vote of the Board of Governors.
