Birthday Wishes

August 23, 2006 | 12:12 pm

It's a candle-heavy time in Lakerland. We're just two days past what would have been Wilt Chamberlain's 70th (check out Roland Lazenby's blog for some Stilt-related material), and today, folks are singing "Happy Birthday" to Kobe Bean Bryant, who turns 28. It feels like the guy has been around way too long to still be two years short of 30, but as more players start their careers at 18, we're going to have to get used to it. (Maybe we should start thinking of hoopsters like hockey players, who fairly routinely start their careers before 20 and seem to play until they're 108.)

So what do you get a guy who makes more in a year — hell, maybe a month — than all of us put together? The idea of running down to Macy's to pick out a lil' somthin' seems a kind of silly, unless you can buy veteran point guards off the rack. So assuming Kobe would even accept a gift from me after last season's MVPgate, what exactly can I offer? Material goods aren't looking like a good option. That leaves birthday wishes, and this would be mine for the former Ocho:

I wish for him one year of not being at the center of every basketball argument on the planet. A year of not being the guy compared to every other guy in the league, in terms of dominance. Of not being compared to a certain player-turned-baseballer-turned-player-turned-GM-turned-Hanes pitchman-turned-part-owner. A season where everyone focuses their attention somewhere else — 365 days of Kobe-free hoops chatter. It would be interesting to see how people would perceive the guy after 12 months of a Kobe embargo. Would old prejudices die? Would beliefs become more crystallized? Would Kobe be able to connect more effectively with fans, peers and the media?

What would happen if we could all go a year without having to declare seemingly on a daily basis where we stand on Kobe?

Of course, none of this will ever happen. We'll be debating him again tomorrow, likely today in this thread. But it would be interesting to see how that reality would play out. To become perhaps the most polarizing figure in sports takes a group effort. Kobe has done his part, so has the media. It doesn't take long to create perceptions, but changing them is often a Herculean task.

So that's what I'd like to give the guy. A crappy gift to be sure, in the sense it can't actually be delivered, but like they say — it's the thought that counts.

Right?

I'm hoping that Chris Mihm overachieves this season. that would up his trade value should we be able to trade him/or with others for a great player then we'd have Magics "one good player (vlad) and one great player (whom ever we get from that trade)

if that isnt feasible i hope he underachieves so that we can resign him for cheap

jon

AK/BK

we should have avitars. . .haha

seriously though wouldnt that be cool?

I'm relatively new to the blog (July this year i think) so sorry if this idea was already shot down

Dan:

Frank Gore is going to be a great running back for the Niners. He is even getting strong play in the fantasy leagues, which is unusual for a 49er offensive player. He is only 5-9 and 215 lbs but has great vision, break-away speed, and a powerful running style. He is very quick, shifty, and hard to bring down, always gaining extra yards after being hit. With our revitalized offensive line, Frank should be the Niners first 1,000 yard runner since Kevan Barlow in 2003. He is the best running back the Niners have had since Roger Craig.

Frank was drafted last year out of Miami, where he showed signs of greatness despite sitting out two seasons with injuries to his left then right knee. He was the first pick in the third round by the Niners and would have been a first round pick if not for the injuries. The Niners believed that he had fully recovered from the knee injuries and could become their main back.

Frank led the Niners in rushing last year as a rookie with an average gain of almost 5 yards per carry, beating out veteran starter Kevan Barlow for most yards. He had surgery during the offseason to fix a problem with both shoulders that made him susceptible to dislocations. While the Niners have concerns about his health and his ability to be a 20 to 25 carry back, they were confident enough in his ability and in Maurice Hicks and Michael Robinson to trade Kevan Barlow to the Jets for a fourth round pick last week. Look for great things from Frank.

D wagner drppoed 85 pts in a summer league last week that hand 7 other NBA players playing in the game. His old coach was on the best dam sports show talking about somebody better pick this guy up. 85 PTS is alot of pts for someone to get. I don't care if it is in a summer league. He is right, somebody better pick this kid up.

Sixonezero:

I agree that it is really a mystery why Bonzi didn’t attract more attention. I guess the jailblazers history still haunts him although he never was one of the guys busted for drugs or firearms. No doubt, however, that the guy can ball. He is every guard’s defensive nightmare in the low post. If he were a Laker, the Nashes and Parkers in the league would not look forward to playing the purple and gold. Bonzi would truly punish them. As sonny has said, maybe there is some problem with Bonzi that we don’t know about. I suspect he will come out full guns this year with whatever team is lucky enough to sign him to prove everybody wrong.

Tom

I absolutely agree. I also have been saying for years that the Lakers need an upgrade at the point. There are a few guys that I have liked for the position. I felt the Lakers should have taken a look at Marcus Banks. He can play, but he wasn't gonna fight over the ball with Kobe. The food chain was pretty clear. But he's gone to the suns. Another guy I have seen for years is Carlos Arroyo, playing currently for the Orlando Magic. This guy can play. I watched him since he played in Utah. The biggest issues he's had is that he has not had a coach that knows how to use him, and doesn't let him play his game. (Jerry Sloan and Larry Brown when he played in Detroit). The guy can shoot the lights out, AND he is, believe it or not, one of the best passers in the league. I always thought he would fit in well in L.A. Also, he could be gotten relatively cheap.

Does anyone else have PGs that they think we would actually have a chance of getting?

2500 to 1? I like those odds. I am going to Reno to play poker in a couple of weeks and will put $20 down to win $5K when Farmar surprises everybody and wins ROY.

Don’t be surprised to see Phil give Farmar and Bynum mucho playing time early to get them ready for the playoffs this year and his final stretch run for a 10th championship in 2007/8, his last year as an NBA coach. Anybody that says that Phil doesn’t want to win #10 very badly doesn’t know the guy very well.

Just a quick comment on Turiaf and the French in the Worlds. He caught a cold in China and was kept on the bench for a couple of games after the start of the tournament. He came back unimpressively against Lebanon in a surprising loss (not at all his fault, but he didn't do much in the couple of minutes he was on the floor apart from missing cues on improvised passes inside where he was going the wrong way).

I only saw three quarters of the blowout against Venezuela where he again looked solid and even had some minutes playing the 4 instead of the 5, alongside center Frédéric Weis. He scored inside and rebounded, producing some decent stats and looked effective as a role player. His teammates looked good (Diaw and the Pietrus brothers), but the team as a whole blew the game against Lebanon and nearly choked against Venezuela by hitting something like 5% of their treys over two games! (They also missed a lot of free throws).

Even without T. Parker, the French have a strong extremely athletic team (the Pietrus brothers, Gélabale and Petro -- a Kwame-like athletic 7 footer -- both drafted by the Sonics, and Bobolo). They could give team U.S. a few headaches... if they learn in the meantime to hit some threes.

What pleased me was the commentators mentioning that the future front court of the French team will be Petro and Turiaf, presumably with Parker and Gelabale in the backcourt and the Pietrus duo at the 3. For the first time it will be all-NBA... and one fifth Lakers (but 40% Sonics!). These are all exciting athletes to watch (sometimes Harlem Globetrotterish) and Florence Pietrus, who was left aside by the NBA, has been shining above all the others. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Laker uniform. He's a slasher, defender and leaper-rebounder extraordinaire. I think some of the NBA scouts in Japan may have noticed him.

Sonnybelfast
"And you're wrong about his perimeter shooting. He's also an absolute animal under the basket, and he's smart. He wouldn't play second fiddle to anybody, and didn't, and probably shouldn't."

First off his 3pt shooting is .22% (.335% career) and this is what I was talking about. 2nd of all thats the reason the Lakers didnt go after him since he wouldnt play 2nd fiddle as you put it since we have already have Kobe at the 2 and have promised Vlad minutes. So he really wont fit in a rotation were I think he would be satisfied unless he comes to L.A. to compete for a ring and is willing to take any position we put in. That includes either a 6th man or a starter. I dont think Bonzi is a bad or great player (=good) but I just dont think we need him or could fit him in a good rotation to keep him happy.

Taliq
Nicely done with my man Em but you didnt finish it off with the "Soldier" lyric

"These shoulders hold up so much they wont budge. Ill never fall or fold up. Even if my collar bone crush or crumble I will never stumble."

This is a reason Im a big Kobe (and Em fan) since both never seem to give up no matter what theyre going through. Another one of my favorite Em songs is "Til I collapse" and here's his intro

"'Cause sometimes you just feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that s*** out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse."

Great words to live by and Kobe is a great example since he never gives up and just keeps getting up no matter whose against him whether its Bully (Shaq) or the Media (BSPN).

Taka
The reason I didnt include a 2-3 player in the trade is because its kinda hard to pick one out to throw in a trade. Mihm is our only trade bait, McKie is old and useless if he's injured, and Cook will just be a backup to Bynum and is just a filler to free up roster space. Here's a list of our 2-3s and why we cant trade them.

Kobe (2)-NOT GONNA GET TRADED
Evans(2)-just got signed
LO(3)-NOT GONNNA GET TRADED(atleast not for Bonzi)
Vlad(3)-just got signed
So the only players we would trade at the 2-3 would have to be Walton (3) but I would rather keep him as a role player. So we have to trade the players we either dont need (McKie&Cook) or players we might lose (MIhm) who by the way is our only real trade bait worth anything.

JayJay
"The only two that I can spot are T-Lue (who is underused by Atlanta and by the way led all NBA guards in 3-pt percentage last year) and the Glove (who despite chemistry problems on his last year here is still unsigned by Miami)."

Lue has clearly stated that he doesnt want to play with Kobe and doesnt want to come back (unless he pulls a PJ) to L.A. and Payton is an over the hill player that doesnt like the triangle. Its a bit hard to find PGs right now that we can sign and thats why we got Evans/William as fillers til either Farmar is ready or Smush develops a bit more. For now these are our PGs and hopefully one of them really blows up.

Zakee,

Don't know about the 85 points a game, but gaddam it the dude can score:

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15195609.htm

With numbers like those, I'm sure some team will definately pick him up. Supposedly the 76ers are taking a look at him.

In Kobe we Trust,
Go Lakers

Please, stop with the search for a point guard! The Lakers do not need a point guard! For the triangle they need another shooting guard. NOT A POINT GUARD!! They don't want someone who is used to dominating the ball.

Tom, Dan The Man and other Niner fans of class,

One more tidbit to explain Nolans move; Barlow vs. Gore:

http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/14306229p-15

Faith,

Aw thanks for the props, you almost made me blush LOL J/K

Taka and others,

I am reminded of a scene from the "Jerk" when, while walking through pasture, Steve Martins ol' daddy explains the difference between Sh** and shinola. Martin, the jerk, acknowledges his pop's remarks and then proceeds to step smack dab in the middle of a pile, still, apparently, not knowing the difference.

So, without getting into the merits of Bonzi as a Brokeback, suffice to say, on a 2006-2007 one year contract, he would bring your team to glory.
For those of you afflicted with constatistipation, Bonzi provided intangible leadership and hustle, and yes, swished those three pointers when it mattered.

Unequivocally, know that -next to having Saint Kobe in Northern California- the last thing I want to see is Bonzai in purple and gold.

I would like to say with total confidence that none of it will ever happen, although stranger things have.

Sorry about the faulty link. It's a good read though.

Shaq,

"...through the flattering mist of self-absorption, we see but a numbing soul-sadness of tenebrous evil"

Nice.

Faith,

Having spent 15 miserable years in the Reno/Tahoe gaming industry working my way down the ladder of success, I must say, 2500 to 1 on Farmar is a great futures.

Think I'll buzz on over to Reno before the line changes.

IDK if someone already posted this, but Kobe is gonna be on Live with Regis and Kelly on Friday.

Haha!!! Don't ask me how I know!!!

I think it's on at 11!!(AM)

OK, never mind, I don't think he's actually gonna be on, but they're doing some behind the scenes thing or something. Sorry if I got anybody's hopes up!!! haha!

sonny:

Link was dead end. Just like Barlow. Maybe Hitler intervened on Kevan's part.

Tom

Pretending that I am 20 years old, who is Hitler?

Where is Arthas?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KOBE!!!

Great article! Thank you for the new flash. That was from the 4 of August. Check what happen after that. But I think this is a guy that we need on our team. I think that him and Kobe in the backcourt would create Havoc. I just hope he does go to Miami or any west coast team this year. This guy is a superstar. I saw him play and he is the real deal. Better then AI in my mind.Dajuan Wagner. If you haven't heard you better ask somebody. Trust me on this won. He is better than evry point guard that we have. Plus his father use to play for the Lakers Milt Wagner. Hey milt send us your son. We could use him this year.

sonny:

According to Kevan Barlow, I think he is the guy currently coaching the Niners. You know, old "my way or the highway" Nolan, AKA Hitler. I believe that AKA was Adolf's little brother.

Tom

"through the flattering mist of self absorbtion, we see but a numbing soul-sadness and tenebrous evil."

Nice? It doesnt even make sense! haha. Someone needs to put down the thesaurus and learn how to write coherent sentences.

On Jordan Farmar:
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but +2500 is actually only 25 to 1, not 2500 to 1. I actually dont think Farmar will get ROY...but at 2500 to 1 I woulda laid down a good $400! which would translate to a winnings of 1 million dollars! (then i could finally get some Laker season tickets!)

Dajuan Wagner will help us win a championship just like his father milt

Taliq
Thanks for the link...I dont care what anybody says if we can pick up Wagner it would be over for this league. We would have our own Steve Nashish scorer. He would be the last missing piece the Lakers needed. Period!

Good eye! Maybe you should be the Lakers Scout...just a thought.

My two cents for free!

Season start please!

wiZo:

I noticed that after I read Faith's link but had already sent off my post. 25 to 1 sounds too reasonable to even bet on. I prefer the odds to be dramatically in my favor to lay down hard cash. But maybe out of loyalty to my posts, I will still put down $20 to win back a measley $500. Phil needs Jordan to win a ring before he retires so if the kid can show the game, I think he will get the PT. There will be some tough competition from Foye and Morrison.

Tom

This "get Dajuan Wagner" thing is a joke, right?

I agree. Although I would like to see Farmar get the ROY, it all depends on how much PT you can get as a rookie. My bet would on one of the guys thats guaranteed to to get significant PT, maybe like in Minnesota, or Portland.

B.
Thee Cali King

wiZO,

Sounds to me like someone needs to pick up a thesaurus.

Laker Tom,

I was aware of Barlows comments. I just recalled reading about a relatively high percentage of 20 or so year olds who couldn't tell you who Hitler was if their lives depended on it.

Ironically, someday they may.

Laker Tom,

Didn't she say 25 hundred to one?

Laker Legend of the past, Wilt Chamberlain was 'one of' the Greatest Centers of league and an ALLTIME Great Laker legend. Wilt was respected throughout his career and made sound decisions both on and off the Basketball Court.

Wilt supposedly had sex with over 10,000 women during and after his NBA career. Amazingly Wilt was NEVER accused of 'FORCING' himself on any of the reported 10,000 women he was with. Out of that amazing number of 10,000 female human beings that Wilt shared intimate acts, one could surly bet for certain that all 10,000 practiced BASIC HYGIENE consisting of ATLEAST changing their underwear on a daily basis as well as changing undies after having sex with other men.

Here we have the Birthday boy Kobe Bryant the future of the Laker organization, a youngman who makes BAD DECISIONS both on the court and off the court. 'PASS' is not in Kobes' genentic makeup. Kobe does not 'pass' the ball to Laker teammates who are also professionals and get paid to play the game of Basketball as a TEAM.

An example of Kobe's selfishness is his not 'passing' on 'FORCING' himself on some small-town, nasty, no-underwear changing, broke-busted and disgusting hotel clerk. Kobe was just married to a very beautiful woman who most likely changes her undies daily, and who also just had his first child. Granted Kobe may have grown up in a different culture, however one fails to see how it could be sexy regardless of the culture, to have an affair with hotel clerk that does not practice BASIC HYGIENE habits of ATLEAST changing of underwear daily.

The type of money that Kobe Bryant makes one expect that if he so desired to have an affair, ti would be one with the Paris Hilton's, Hallie Berry, Laker Cheerleader, J-Lo, Beyonce' Knowles, Ciara or EVEN Oprah types!!! Women with CLASS, MONEY and enough hometraining to atleast change undies on a daily basis.

An simple analogy of this dumb act would be an example of: Shady, LakerTom or even Edwin Gueco all making well over 100,000 per year and all three married to some of the most drop-dead gorgeous women in the City of Angels. Then having the three of jeopardizing their marriages and careers by going to downtown LA on 9th street meeting and having an affair with a desitute woman that looks like a shorter version of a broke RuPaul who does not change undies on a daily basis, while pushing a cart down the avenue selling Ice Cream.

It wouldn't make sense!!!!

OUT!!!
the Truth

Sonny and Tom,

Thanks for the insight, I'll keep an eye on him this season.

>_<

Tsphere,

Thanks for the Turiaf report, keep'em coming!

>_<

Andrew Z,
It's not a joke; I just wish everyone here would keep quiet about him until we sign him. If we don't shut up, the rest of the GMs will realize what a find he is, and someone else will get him!

Yeah!!!

Greece owned Turkey last night, and is 5-0!

How many of you saw Greece goin' 5-0?

Go GREECE!!!
Go Kobe!!!
Go Lakers!!!

lakerfan4life-

i like your enthusiasm...but i'd hate to bust your bubble. there is a reason why dajuan wagner disappeared from the face of the nba. this reason is why other great scorers fell through the cracks on to the cba, d-league, europe, asia...thats because they can't shoot or play defense. think HAROLD MINER. so all this talk about this is the guard we need to take us over the top is RIDICULOUS. thats a capital R I D I C U L O U S! i guess the heat is starting to get to your heads. please stay out of the sun and drink plenty of liquids. FAITH is a nursing student. please refer to her any questions about symptoms of heatstroke.

oh to add on to DAJUAN WAGNER idea. this guy played 55 games from 03-05. this guy is more injury prone that CHRIS MIHM if you can believe that. he isn't even a natural point guard. he is an undersized shooting guard.

FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD PEOPLE! STOP WITH THESE GARBAGE IDEAS ALREADY! ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH.

arite im done.

Did you change your underwear today?

DaJuan Wagner may be a great idea. Start him alongside your rookie.

Taliq, lakerfan4life and Zakee,

We already have one "medical miracle" in Roni, we don't need another!

>_<

It would be nice if all the Kobe and Lakers haters could come up with something new. It's like they all just copy and paste 2 posts over and over. I've been listening to the same song on repeat for 3 years. I'll play Dan Rathers, since he's out. Kobe sets new records every year and has three rings on his hand because he's the best. He put up more points than anyone since MJ because he can. No one else in the NBA can; if they could, they would. No one can even put up 62 besides Kobe. Forget the 81. The Kings suck and they always will; they have no championships in God knows how many seasons, and they will never have any championships. They have known, and will always know, mediocrity. Shaq is an egotistical, worn out tub of lard. If he played Kobe one on one Kobe would clown on him, and Kobe would've clowned on him 5 years ago too. Look for Shaq to get dunked on by Kobe and Bynum on XMas.

sonny,
Are you implying that I need a thesaurus? Why? Should I have used another word for "million"? Nah, I think million pretty much sums up the point since 2500 times 400 is exactly a million....so I think that word is adequate (sorry, that was the biggest word I could think of that would suffice). And I have to make the same argument for my use of the word "dollars". OH, I know, I should've used a bigger word for translate.....man, I feel dumb.

sixonzero,
Wagner's departure from the NBA might not have been so much his defense as it was his extreme loss of appetite, loss of weight, and fatigue due to an enlarged large intestine. The guy was REALLY sick. Wagner might not be the savior of the Lakers, but to say that it is RIDICULOUS for a guy who scored a 100pts in a highschool game and avg'd 40+ pts and was fairly dominant in college and just scored 132 pts in 2 summer league games,...is a little extreme. Maybe he could help, maybe he can't...but I dont think any of us know that answer. But to say Dejuan left the NBA cuz of his shooting or defense is like saying Jay Williams couldnt hack it in the NBA cuz he didnt get the triangle offense. Did he have some problems? Sure. But its not the reason he left. And Bobby Hurley didnt not make it to the NBA cuz he couldnt rebound in case you were wondering.

No wonder!!!

No wonder Superstars Shaquille ONeal, Gary Payton and Karl Malone left the Laker organization!!! Showering next to Kobe Bryant after games, there is no telling what type of creatures and parasites would drop off Kobe's body in the shower. Especially considering the type of women Kobe caters for extramarital affairs.

Shaq will ONCE AGAIN lead the Miami HEAT to the NBA PromiseLand.

OUT!!!
the Truth

My father and Kobe are born on the same day. They have a lot in common. Incredible, eccentric, dedicated human beings.

One of my great regrets in life is never seeing Wilt Chamberlein play. No one way greater. Kobe could be greater, but he isn't... yet.

GO LAKERS!

WiZo,

I suppose you should.

Dujuan Wagner would help about as much as his dad Milt did for us in 87-88: 40 games played, 42% FG%. 3.8 PPG.
Here's Dujuan's career averages: 9.4 PPG 36 FG %. If anyones gets him, it will be the Sixers. He's already tried out for them.
While we're at it why don't we go after Latrell Sprewell and Doug Christie? LOL!
