AK Live From Staples - Lakers vs. Suns (Game 3)
Just about to get started, people. And let me tell y'all, the media area is a freakin' cricus. Everyone network except that one All-Korean station seems to have a reporter here. And the Country Music Network. I don't see anyone with a ten gallon hat and a pad of paper.
As is the custom (24 years and counting), Jeffrey Osborne just did the National Anthem. Let me tell y'all something. Dude can make anyone feel pretty freakin' patriotic. I may actually enlist. Them is some pipes.
Just so everyone knows, I'm probably gonna chime in less and concentrate on updating your comments. Or at least make that the top priority.
It's already louder up in here than I've ever heard a Lakers game. And good, becuase the crowd ain't always enought of a factor.
First Quarter
Not a bad little job of knifing through the D by Kobe.
And, that just got interesting, huh? In the caetgoty of "people you don't expect to see in the middle of a brawl," Luke Walton is a pretty good candidate. And for the record, the refs got this right. Luke deserved the flagrant. And Diaw was a little unnecessarily chippy. And the funny thing was, I think Kobe inadvertantly caused the scrum by accidentally pushing Diaw into Smush, who fell, hence the chaos.
I'm not saying I didn't like Smush's reverse jam. I'm just saying, he'd have been cut on the spot if he missed it.
I'm not sure I've ever seen Steve Nash take that many steps. Although he's got the right idea. If you're gonna travel, get your money's worth.
On the jumbotron, they just showed highlights from a Lakers bowling night for kids with Cook and Smush. They just showed Smush roll. I'm pretty sure they cut away right before it ended up in the gutter. Ball was drifting very right.
They are doing a very nice job of getting Luke freed in the post for some easy buckets. Which is good, because they're unfortunately doing a terrible job guarding the three.
Tell ya, Smush may lack in perimeter D, but he's got to be one of the more athletic PG's out there. In terms of just athleticism. Guy can really get up there.
End of the first. Lakers, 31, Phoenix 27. Probably letting in a little more points than they'd like (especially around the arc), but I don't think the Lakers can be all that mad. It's going a little quicker than they'd like, and they're actually outscoring the Suns. If it's gonna move fast like that, it's a nice sign that they're ahead.
Second Quarter
There's a woman behind me that is screeching and screaming upon every play and has among the most abrasive voices I've ever heard. Picture a hoarse parrot in middle aged human form and that's this lady. I would give polly a cracker just to put something in her yap so she can't talk.
Plus, and I'm not quite sure who the culprit is (although I'm pretty sure it's an older gent reasonbly within my vicinity), but someone in the media seating seriously stinks. Bad. Like rotten feet mixed with expired menthol. I hope the blogger nation appreciates what I'm enduring to bring you the news as it happen.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Phil's gonna chat with the team about taking perhaps a touch less 3's in the second half. And probably in a somewhat loud tone.
Okay, other Lakers. See how Kobe took the ball inside, missed, got his own rebound, stayed inside, then scored. Go do that!
Glad to see LO recognized that mismatch Bell guarding Kwame and immediately got the rock inside to him. Again, slow it down and remember what was working.
That last three by Sasha worked because they had the ball inside first, as opposed to working it from around the perimeter the whole time.
When the hell did the previously and constantly maligned Sasha Vujacic become the rock star? The crowd just gave Slovenia's favorite son a Kobe-esque standing O. Hit a few three's and all of a sudden you're a golden boy. Nicely done, kid.
Seem this is why I wish Kwame had worked with Kareem the entire season (as opposed to just recently, as I believe he is now). Because he can't hit a hook shot beyond two feet to save his life.
Unbelievable awareness by Kobe, getting that ball behind him to LO, who drew the foul on Thomas. That, my friends, is clutch.
End of the half. Lakers, 49. Suns, 44. It looked like things were getting a little too "Sunny" for a bit, but the last couple posessions seemd a little more reminiscent of what got them a 2-1 advantage in the first place. Slow everything down and unless your name is Sasha (and I can't believe I just typed that), nobody should be shooting 3's unless you're more open than Jerry's Famous Deli. That's a joke, because they never close.
Anyway, time to get an iced tea. See ya in a bit.
Third Quarter
Okay, I'm back. Saw D-Fish (in a sweet, Hugh Hefner-esque, cordouroy magenta blazer) down in the media area. Seemed to be happy to visit his old house. And it was a bit of a historic moment for me, as I got a close up gander at Cindy Crawford for the first time ever. Let me tell y'all something. That ain't all airbrushing working for her. Not exactly an ugly woman. Also in the house: Author Jose Canseco, wearing what was probably a $300 tank top and sunglasses. Loser.
Kwame Brown with the dish to Smush. We're starting to enter "anything can happen" territory.
Let me say right now. If Kwame doesn't get tossed, consider yourselves as fans very lucky.
Seriously, y'all. Be very happy that was just a T on Kwame. A different set of refs and he could have gotten easily been bounced. Especially since he lorded over Diaw after he flipped him. I like how the team's all fired up, but they gotta make sure they don't let emotions go goony bird.
I'm telling ya, Luke Walton is turning into the X-factor of this series in a way I'd have never predicted. The guy has really cranked his game another notch. It used to really mystify me how much he was struggling, because the guy seems literally born to thrive in the triangle. But after some rough patches, he's really in a groove.
All in all, Kwame's having a nice game. But I'm not sure I've ever seen a seven footer with less ability to make a layup. He's gotta learn how to do that.
Straight up. No doubt. Kobe got ROBBED on that block. All ball and he basically got penalized for how hard Barbosa fell.
Nash and LO trade back to back treys to knot it up at 70. I gotta say, this is seriously fun game. This is easily the best first round series of the playoffs.
And the crowd's chanting "Kwame" while he's at the stripe. Ain't what they used to yell his way back in December and January. Man, has the tide turned for this guy in a good way.
There's a lady behind me (not the hoarse-parrot woman) who keeps frantically yelling "Kwame! Shoot it!" and doesn't seem aware that Kwame's actually on the bench right now. I believe she may have started the cocktail hour at about 2 this afternoon.
End of the third. Lakers, 77. Suns 74. Ladies and gentleman, this has turned into a dogfight. It's all about who wants it the most at this point.
Fourth Quarter
Do Cook and Kwame go to the same class to learn layups? If so, I'd think about transferring to a different university. A finishing school, perhaps?? Good night everybody! Thank you! Don't forget to tip your waitress! The 10' o' clock show is completely different from the 7:30.
I'm not criticizing, but just out of curiousity: If Kobe throws "X" amount of behind the back bounce passes during the third game of a playoff series, does he get a free latte or something?
Did I just get magically transported to Philadelphia without realizing it? C'mon, Lakers fans. Yelling "Phoenix sucks" while Tim Thomas is down and hurt. Not classy. You can do better than that.
All right, they're doing the Bob Seger "Hollywood Nights" montage and thee place just went absolutely bonkers for Rick Fox and D-Fish, who actually had to motion for the crowd to sit down. They also showed aging KISS singer Paul Stanley, who looks like the love child of Howard Stern and Bea Arthur. And yes, that's every bit as sexy as you're picturing it.
As much as I often think bitching to the refs is pointless and counterproductive, I kinda like seeing Luke do it after that loose ball whistle. I think it would do him good to make his presence known a bit with the refs, especially with him being so involved with things lately.
And there you have it! Lakers 99. Phoenix 92. And you gotta give it up to Phoenix, too. They played with hella intensity, too. They wanted this one in a big way. But unfortunately for them, so did the Lakers. And just to clarify, in case you weren't positive, the game was every bit as exciting live as it seemed from your TV, radio, or internet connection.
FYI. I'm right next to Stu as he's about to do a broadcast. Everyone's yelling to him and he's giving them the thumbs up back. He also flashed them some NBA bling. Although now they keep yelling at him as he's trying to get his segment going, and he's starting to look a bit annoyed.
More tommorrow. Thanks for tuning in.

Posted by: Michael Teniente | April 28, 2006 at 07:47 PM
flagrant my butty!
Posted by: Faith | April 28, 2006 at 07:47 PM
Good to see the Lakers intensity so early, both from the players and the fans. I hope we don't get so excited that we get out of our slow paced game plan.
Posted by: Mike S. | April 28, 2006 at 07:49 PM
Folks, folks, take it easy. It was definitely a flagrant by Luke. And actually, the whole dog pile kinda started because Kobe (accidentally, I think) pushed Diaw into Smush, which led to Smush falling, which led to bodies everywhere. But it was the right call by the refs.

Damn. Good intensity though.
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 07:51 PM
tighten up on D guys!
Posted by: Faith | April 28, 2006 at 07:53 PM
I'm not surprised they ruled it a flagrant. the refs have been REALLY cracking down on rough plays this postseason. As long as there isn't a suspenison i'm cool with it. Nice to see Luke not shrinking away anymore
Posted by: Hunter | April 28, 2006 at 07:54 PM
please help me.. is there any courtside live beside NBA.com??? coz i can't see the game.. don't know why but ESPN in my cable TV doesn't show this game...

Luke, my man! Gettin' involved early!
Posted by: Mike S. | April 28, 2006 at 07:56 PM
I love the balanced scoring - everyone has 4 except for LO who has 2.

The game will be up on TNT in three minutes!

Posted by: Michael Teniente | April 28, 2006 at 07:59 PM
If the Lakers could win both of these staple center games
they would be at 3-1 which is unbelievable for a team like the Lakers
Posted by: Keven | April 28, 2006 at 08:00 PM
The ESPN in your area might be waiting for the wiz-cavs game to get over, which it just did. That's the case where I'm at.
Posted by: shawn | April 28, 2006 at 08:00 PM
slow it down guys, we need to play our game.
Posted by: Faith | April 28, 2006 at 08:03 PM
Damn, Luke's playing nice!
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:03 PM
Tim Thomas is killing us, come on Kwame!
Posted by: Faith | April 28, 2006 at 08:04 PM
k0be fans
try sportsline.com/nba It's ok, not great. espn.com has more bells and whistles, but in my experience it doesn't flow as smoothly
Posted by: Mike S. | April 28, 2006 at 08:04 PM
Luke is suddenly a monster?
Where has this Laker team been hiding all season?
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:05 PM
SMUUUSSHHH!
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:05 PM
And Smush is well rewarded for that flying save!
Posted by: Hunter | April 28, 2006 at 08:05 PM
It's a dogfight tonight.
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:06 PM
Without those 3 pointers we would be KILLING them!
mike
Posted by: Michael Teniente | April 28, 2006 at 08:06 PM
great...that means no Luke for game 4. Every other player in the playoffs who has committed a flagrant foul has gotten suspended 1 game.
Posted by: nyla | April 28, 2006 at 08:07 PM
ok.. i'm in now... our team looks good.. keep it up.
DEFENSE GUYS
GO LAKERS
Posted by: k0be_fans | April 28, 2006 at 08:07 PM
somebody needs to guard Thomas, he can't possibly make all these 3 pointers guarded.
Posted by: Faith | April 28, 2006 at 08:07 PM
The kids are letting the crowd push them too much, gotta get back into tempo!
Posted by: Kevin McK | April 28, 2006 at 08:07 PM
4 Threes by Tim Thomas...do you think Kwame might be willing to apply some of that defense we've been celebrating him for for months and come out and guard his man a little bit? I'm just saying...Tim has shown he can make that shot.
Just a little bit.
Posted by: Jimbo | April 28, 2006 at 08:08 PM
We need to slow it down as this is the Suns pace. Also, can someone please guard Tim Thomas we are making it look like he shoots the three like Reggie Miller.
Posted by: Gurpreet | April 28, 2006 at 08:08 PM
This is not our pace...i know that we are home and want to run but this is NOT are pace. Slow it down and pic our spots to run! AND for goodness sake dont leave your man behind the 3pt line to help cause that is a wide open 3 u are givin them
Posted by: Bonez | April 28, 2006 at 08:08 PM
Sacto is leading at almost halftime. Looks like Big Shot Rob got away with an elbow to the face of Bonzi Wells. Wonder if that will warrant a mandatory suspension anyway? It seems to be the trend this year
Posted by: Hunter | April 28, 2006 at 08:08 PM
Why do they keep posting up Luke of all people. Theyve fed Kwame in the post twice only and he has scored both times. We are totally outplaying them but we only up by a couple. Not good. TT is killing us again.
Posted by: LakerfanfromPakistan | April 28, 2006 at 08:10 PM
Good hustle. Slow the game down.
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:11 PM
Sunsa re lucky the threes are falling. Cuz they can't buy a layup.
Posted by: Hunter | April 28, 2006 at 08:11 PM
They really need to slow down and go back to borning basketball. They're playing to playing to the crowd too much and it's Phoenix basketball.
Posted by: nyla | April 28, 2006 at 08:11 PM
Damn Lamar is a BEAST!
Posted by: Jimbo | April 28, 2006 at 08:11 PM
COOOKIE MONSTER!
But stupid follow-up foul.
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:12 PM
Was Kobe fouled?
Posted by: Jon Kavulic | April 28, 2006 at 08:13 PM
patience, patience, we need to guard better...we need to slow down (regardless of the score). Our pace means our game. Come on guys!
Posted by: Faith | April 28, 2006 at 08:13 PM
