unbelievable performance tonight by Mr. Bryant. Good decision not to play him in the 4th. No risk for injury when they got the game wrapped up.
Posted by: Derek | December 20, 2005 at 10:39 PM
kobe just scored 62 points!! in 3 quarters!!! how unselfish was he for staying on the bench for the whole 4th quarter?? its crazy, all them big name players like MJ needed an overtime to get 63 points, but this skinny kid uses just 3 quarters? to say amazing is the understatement of the season!! also lakers up at the 7th spot in western conferance, uuff only if kwame played some D previous game and stopped that uncontested T-mac layup, we would have been right with the overrated clippers.
Posted by: jk | December 20, 2005 at 10:46 PM
I would have liked to see him break the record. It was definitely in reach and the way Kobe was playing, there is no doubt in my mind he would have surpassed it.
Posted by: Wasim | December 20, 2005 at 10:48 PM
A part of me also wanted Kobe to play the 4th. I mean, seeing something like that performance tonight really is a once in a lifetime thing.
On the other hand...
What if Kobe had played in that fourth quarter and gotten hurt? Phil's decision, curmudgeonly as it was, was the right one.
On the other hand...
Damn it would have been nice to see how many he could have ended up with if he played the 4th! The way he was heating up at the end of the 3rd, I think he may have even had a chance to break Wilt.
Posted by: Jimbo | December 20, 2005 at 10:57 PM
He was unbelieveable tonight. Ive never seen a guy totally overwhelm a team like Kobe did tonight. Im really speechless. 31 Shots? 31 Points in a Quarter? 62 points in 3 quarters? Just unbelieveable.
Posted by: GMac | December 20, 2005 at 10:58 PM
UNbelievable!
OUTstanding!
INcredible!
what else is there to say? wow.
Posted by: CBuck | December 20, 2005 at 10:58 PM
before we get too buried in the thread, let's hear it for great team defense!!
oh, who am I kidding...
WOOO HOOOO!!!!
Somehow buried in that statement about protecting home court, I think #8 might've also been sending a message to a certain 330lb. Secret Santa who may have been qouted recently bad-mouthing a certain organization's boss's choice last summer. Pretty hard to believe Buss made the wrong decision here...

If Lakers' team success keeps rolling....is it too early to say...Kobe for MVP??
Seriously....
Posted by: JusmanX | December 20, 2005 at 11:00 PM
AMAZING, UNBELIEVABLE....how nobody scored over 10 points.
Posted by: Frustrated Laker Fan | December 20, 2005 at 11:02 PM
62 in 3 quarters? Who remembers the 56 in 3 he put on Memphis?!! Kobe just demoralizes teams so badly the game is not even reach by the time the 4th come around. We've got at least 4 more years of prime Kobe. I'm guessing he'll hit 70 in one of those games. No doubt one of the greatest scorers of all time.
I really think the lakers can get the 6th seed or sneak the Pacific Division crown if Amare doesnt come back!!
Posted by: korey sewell | December 20, 2005 at 11:05 PM
What was awesome about this was that Kobe kept it up. We've seen this before for one half, only to have him peter out. But, as he mentioned in his press conference, he wasn't necessarily "feeling it", he was just attacking, and being assertive. It wasn't all outside shots. This is something he can CONTINUE doing. Obviously not for 60 plus points, but for 50% FG most nights, and 10 plus FTs. Damn. This was a great night.

Crap. I just heard that Laron Profit, aka LeBron Prophet got hurt in the game. Can one of the youngsters (Devin Green, Von "Helsing" Wafer) step up in his place? This one might hurt - Laron has been a solid contributor.
Posted by: KB8 Fan | December 20, 2005 at 11:09 PM
6th seed? Bah! I'm thinking that the 2 seed is easily within reach. Phoenix is missing Amare for a few more months. Golden State is a jump shooting team that is going to fade as soon as Baron Davis goes down with his yearly injury. The Los Angeles Clippers are.........the Clipppers.
Yeah, I think the Lakers can take the division.
Posted by: Jimbo | December 20, 2005 at 11:09 PM
62 points! whoa! criticisms, GONE!
it's good we're now at the 7th spot out west...it's great! i love kobe! i have always loved kobe! go kobe! the magic,HEAT,wiz, are next...hope we can keep this momentum for these following games...oh, and a memphis home game too! we heard VERY NICE words from kobe after the game. the 62-point game is, somehow, kobe's early christmas present to us laker fans...the big game is on christmas day, kobe-phil vs. suck(shaq)-riley....it's one helluva showdown.
KOBE FOR MVP!
GO LAKERS!

go shaq, go.

Great show, it was nice to see Kobe so happy after all he's been through. Glad he didn't play in the 4th, hope they make mention of that when the NBA talking heads talk this one up. It could be just what we needed heading to Florida. Let's roll.
Posted by: Vman | December 20, 2005 at 11:12 PM
end of the 3rd qtr:
bryant 62 mavs 61
holee crap! just. wow.
Posted by: Joseph | December 20, 2005 at 11:13 PM
kobe's a mega-FREAK!!! fully among the all-time most gifted scorers in NBA history. definitely a good decision to sit out the 4th, though he was well on his way to scoring about 80 points. dang!
Posted by: leelo | December 20, 2005 at 11:14 PM
Kobe is WITHOUT DOUBT the best player in the league, and definitely one of the all-time greats by scoring 62 points. But doing it in THREE (3!!!!) quarters just puts him on MJ status (btw, has MJ done anything like this? In three quarters?).
All I can say is the MDE is now wishing he'll get injured before the Miami-LA showdown or he'll have to pass that title to Kobe.
Man. Three quarters?
Posted by: Nigel | December 20, 2005 at 11:25 PM
wait so who were those kids complaining about KOBE?!?!?
hhmm what was it... 62 pts in 3 qtrs? on about thirty shots?
yea...
i dare you to talk smack... then watch him put 60 to your face, and talk again.
Posted by: sylvain peltzer | December 20, 2005 at 11:25 PM
I think Kobe was wanting to break Shaq's record of 61 and send a message to the big guy--"here I come!"
Posted by: les23 | December 20, 2005 at 11:27 PM
A part of me wanted Kobe play the 4th quarter, I mean just imagine the records he would have broken. Good call Phil, pulling him, because I don't know what I'm talking about, and he could have gotten hurt, with some intentional foul or somethin. Did you see the look on the Dallas players faces when he hit 62. BEFORE anyone else puts it up here, he had 0 assists, but it wasn't like anyone else was really making buckets......AM I wrong? NE1? Thats what I thought. Either way Kobe is the best in the league and this is how stars defend their GMs. I CANNOT wait till sunday. OMFG!!! i can't wait.
Posted by: JagzGB | December 20, 2005 at 11:33 PM
who is this Mike Breshanan guy on latimes. even a night like this from kobe, and the guy still bashed him.
"When he came out for a rest with 2:15 left in the second quarter, he had 32 points on 11-for-17 shooting. He was put back into the game with 6.3 seconds left until halftime but his three-point attempt at the buzzer missed, one of few times he disappointed the crowd."
Posted by: tungtwista | December 20, 2005 at 11:49 PM
KOBE THE GREAT! KOBE'S A ONE-MAN SCORING MACHINE! 62 POINTS! HOLY MACARONIE!
KOBE FOR MVP!
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: shaq_hater | December 21, 2005 at 12:00 AM
Info for comparison (and water cooler talk):
Michael Jordan's 1986 playoff game against the Celtics
Double OT ... 53 minutes...22-41 FGs...no three point attempts, although they did have 3's back then ...19-21 FTS ... 5 Rebounds ... 6 assists ... 4 fouls ...3 steals... 4 turnovers ...2 blocked shots ... Bulls lost
So you can be an informed fan. Yes, it was the playoffs.
Posted by: KB8 Fan | December 21, 2005 at 12:14 AM
An interesting stat here, if Kobe would have played the 4th quarter, at his scoring rate, he would have ended up with 83 points tonight. That's sick!

Laron Profit is out for the season! Bummer!
Posted by: Vincent | December 21, 2005 at 12:40 AM
Obviously an amazing performance, but I would have liked to see him towards the end of the third when he was getting double and triple teamed to pass. We won by 20+, Kobe scored 62, no real complaints, but yeah, pass out of triple teams.
then again, nobody ever asked shaq to pass it. kobe is judged by a double standard.
Posted by: Michael | December 21, 2005 at 12:45 AM
Tonight's performance was vintage Kobe.. scoring from every part of the floor...dunks, 3 pointers, slashing lay ups, pull up jumpers, hard offensive board put backs.... wish Chicky was around to see this one. Chick might have put this game in the refrigerator in the second quarter...The lights out, the eggs coolin', the butters gettin hard and the jellooo is jigglin, baby... We miss you Chicky.
Posted by: fullctpress | December 21, 2005 at 12:47 AM
A Phenomenal / Historical night for KOBE.(STANDING OVATION!)
well you don't see those kind of plays in decades... 62 pts in 3qtrs?!?!! and 62pts - 61pts Dallas?!?!? DAMN! what a performance.
Good decision on PJ not putting him on 4th. Kobe might demoralize the Dallas some more and he might get hurt and we all blame PJ for putting back him back.
Solid defense to the team...can't wait to see them against Miami..Kobe is just sending a message to the BABY GIANT aka Shaq (little "brain" warrior) O' Neal.
GO LAKERS!!!! DEFINITELY A SHOWTIME NIGHT!!!!
Posted by: Digtaz | December 21, 2005 at 12:50 AM
I don't know what the haters are talking about. I don't care if Kobe take 30 shots as long as he's making at least or more than half of them while getting to the freethrow line in the process, which he did plenty of. I hate that Laron is out for the season, I hope Ronny Turiaf plays himself back into game shape cause he would be a nice addition. Teams like the Kings, Nuggets, Sonics, Clippers are stating to lose more frequently, which is great. They need to start playing more consistent at home though. Tonight was a great start.
Posted by: rashad | December 21, 2005 at 01:51 AM
Dallas is number 2 in the west, Lakers, no. 7. If this was late March, imagine the calculating Mark Cuban would be busy doing to work out how many late season games the Mavs would have to try to lose so as to avoid a first round matchup with the Lakers... or just Kobe alone, averaging 52.5 points per game against them (in 7 quarters of play over 2 games).

I remember sitting down with Phil 10 years ago and listening to him talk about watching Michael Jordan on those special nights.
"Some nights he would take on a whole team," Phil said of Michael. "They'd say, 'That son of a gun, he beat us all to the basket.' As a coach, you can run that tape back all day. You say, 'Look at this guy go around that guy and that guy. He beat four guys going to the basket that time.' That's destructive. That's something that Michael's been known for, and I know it grates at the heart of the other team."
Yet even all of Michael's great performances didn't prepare Jackson for Kobe's 62 on Tuesday night.
"A 30-point third quarter, there's never been anything like that that I've seen," Jackson told reporters afterward. "That was unique in itself."
When Kobe was young and struggling with his Laker teammates in 1999, I talked to him a long time one afternoon in Houston.
"I just want to be the man," Kobe told me, explaining that he wanted to dominate pro games the way he had dominated high school games when he scored 50 points.
That's all I could think about as I watched him beat his chest as he left the floor.
Former Lakers psychologist George Mumford, who also worked with the Bulls, said Kobe is the only athlete he's ever encountered who had an Alpha male competitiveness that approached Jordan's.
Truth is, Phil was the most amazed, yet the least comfortable, on the nights when Jordan turned it all loose. Phil admitted to me there was something almost frightening in those displays.
"That attitude, that tremendous competitiveness, sometimes makes it tough to be a teammate, because you see that tremendous competitiveness is gonna eat you up everywhere. It's gonna eat you up playing golf with him next week, playing cards with him nexts month. That attitude of arrogance is gonna be there. It's not always the best for personal connections and friendship. But it certainly makes for greatness."
To me, that explains to some degree why Kobe's teammates had so much trouble with him when he was younger. It was no small irony that Rick Fox was sitting courtside Tuesday night. Fox was one of those older members of the pack when Kobe was a young cub. And sitting on the Mavs bench was his old coach, Del Harris, who took over the Dallas team after head coach Avery Johnson was thrown out of the game. Harris spent the rest of the night trying to appear composed.
Fortunately for the Lakers, this was about much, much more than the past.
Kobe threw that 62 points out as his answer to the loss to Houston Sunday night. Now, it's just sort of out there. The Dallas Mavericks will have to deal with being destroyed. And Phil Jackson will have to deal with all the good and bad of such a performance, such a statement game.
It's good Phil has experience with pulling such a force within the team structure and harnessing it. More important, Kobe, too, is learning to do that. Because it's like an atomic weapon; it can be almost as destructive for the Lakers as it will be for the Mavericks.

then again who expects a centre (shaq) to pass properly?
kobe is under too many double standards
props to kobe, id take 62 pts on 18-31 shooting over 25 pts and 5 assists anyday
LO put in another lacklustre game again

tungtwista - what's your deal? It was one of the few times he dissapointed the crowd. Do you not get that he's being sarcastic? He's actually complimenting Kobe. He's exagerating for the purpose of our entertainment and amusement. I like Bresnahan, he's a good writer, he's one of the few things about the Times that's still entertaining. Without him I'd never be able to keep up with the team.

I wept. I composed myself and I wept some more. Still I weep...
Beautiful.
Transcendent.
Unreal.
Kobe.

Kobe deciding NOT to play 4th quarter makes him GREAT player. Jackson would`ve let him play if Kobe insisted after 62 points.
Posted by: ivan | December 21, 2005 at 06:41 AM
All I can say about Kobe last night is WOW!! But lets get past Kobe and focus on the rest of the team come on guys thanx for the defense but can Kobe get some scoring help. If we are going to beat the Heat we are going to need more than just Kobe. Lamat take some shots that you can hit,Smush im getting tired of you picking and choosing which games your going to show up too. Mihm get ready FAT Bastard is coming for you. Kwame get you starting spot back Cook aint ready yet.
Kobe Kobe Kobe KObe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe
MVP MVP MVP MVP MVP !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to make a correction from statements previously made. Phil Jackson did not sit Kobe for the 4th quarter. IT was Kobe that sat Kobe for 4th quarter. Although I am obviously in awe of his performance last night, I must say that I am evem more impressed by the maturity and class prevalent in the following two lines that I am cutting&pasting from Bresnhan's article in the Times:
"Bryant did not play in the fourth, declining Jackson's invitation to reenter the game if he so desired."
"That's not what we play for," Bryant said. "That's not what it's about. It's not to score 70 points. We wanted to win the game, and the game was in the bag. It was in the refrigerator."
Good stuff!

62...one more than Shaq's career high, one less than Jordan's. I think Kobe and Phil know exactly how to send a message with a single number.
Posted by: Chris Yeh | December 21, 2005 at 07:10 AM
Young master Kobe, Jeddi knight was magnificent, even Yodda (Jordan) would have been proud. Now we await the return of Darth Vader (Shaq). Embarass him, we must.

WOW its the next day and i all i can athink about is yesterdays game. Kobe went bazooka on the Mavs. I wanted him to pass out of the triple teams also, but he was just feeling it and knew he was sitting out the fourth. Anybody see the shot Kobe took to the neck from Howard? Kobe is gonna be sore from that hit i bet. oh yeh he had 62 pts enough said. I read couple articles complaining about the fact he had zero assists. I find it amazing how they find ways to hate on kobe, but kobe stated that his teamates wanted him to take the shots and he was determined to win the game. After all last game his teamates were the ones that let him down. He shared the ball more than enough times and they came up blank. Give Kobe a break!

Points are not everything but if the lackers can make a little run in the playoffs, I say Kobe Bryant MVP no feakin question.
Bring on Miami!!!!!!!

Shaq's continued badgering of of Dr. Buss and Kobe has gotten very tired. Come Christmas, the diesel e.g. fat guy who has trouble staying healthy for half a season is going to get his.
Posted by: todd | December 21, 2005 at 07:31 AM
Kobe *should* have played in the 4th. Yes, 99 out of a 100 times, you yank the star when they're winning the game like the Lakers were. But this was possibly a once in a career situation... aside from Chamberlain's historic 100 point game (which there was no way Kobe was going to get to), has any player ever amassed so many points so quickly? They should have let Kobe go for 75 points... you just don't pass up an opportunity like that... it's career defining. Ten years from now, this game will be forgotten by all but a handfull, but if he had scored 75 points, that would have been something that would get brought up anytime another player scored 60+ (like people do with David Robinson's big 70).
Posted by: irusun | December 21, 2005 at 07:40 AM
What a performance by #8, unbelievable..... At what point will M. Cuban blame Kobe's performance on the Refs.... note to M. Cuban, get rid of those brutal uni's, I've heard of throwbacks but those were like late 1800's bad.... Keep it up Kobe and happy holidays to all....
Posted by: STL Laker Fan | December 21, 2005 at 07:43 AM
Somebody mentioned this performance as "Vintage Kobe".
Kobe isn't old yet is he? :)
Posted by: Revgen | December 21, 2005 at 07:53 AM
Is it just me or is Tim Legler on ESPN's NBA shootaround another Kobe basher? I remember they had a comparison between the two 30 point per game scorers, Kobe and AI. Tim Legler doesn't really give props to Kobe or the Lakers saying that he'd rather have Iverson on all accounts, and saying the Lakers will not make the playoffs. Greg Anthony on the other hand, supports the Lakers and believes that they WILL make the playoffs, even to go as far as to say that Kobe might be the MVP this year. Anyways, I was watching this show again last night, and Tim Legler looked like a cat caught his tongue. He was speechless, yet he managed to mutter some words that contradicted himself by praising Kobe. I could just imagine the reaction on Greg Anthony's face. When it was his turn to speak, he reiterated his stance that he believes the mix of Coach Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant is enough to propel the Lakers into the playoffs.
In my opinion, the Lakers are starting to play better in the triangle, but most the most impressive improvement I see is the defense. I like the defensive combination of Smush and Kobe in the backcourt, as well as LO, Kwame, and Chris cleaning up the interior. Did you guys see all those blocks? Lakers might be able to win the Pacific, should Amare come back or not.
Posted by: Chris | December 21, 2005 at 08:00 AM
Greg Anthony(ESPN commentator) went out on a limb and said that the Lakers would make to the Western Conf. Finals. I don't know about that, but I sure do love how these guys are playing as a team. Kobe's performance against the Mavs was phenomenal. He decided not to play in the fourth(Phil was gonna let him play) which shows maturity on his part. Kobe for MVP!! Go Lakers!!!!!!!
