It's too bad Jumaine is only making $1.8mil, which makes him hard to trade for anything decent. A 2nd round pick is OK, but a 1st rounder would be better, as that's more in the neighborhood of the $1.8m salary that we're giving up. The positive side is that this will free up a roster spot for someone like Devin Green, who has been playing really well during the preseason... he reminds me of a smaller (and not as developed) Tayshon Prince - I'd really like to see him make the regular season roster. While maybe a little undersized for a typical swingman, Green could definitely be a solid backup for Kobe at the 2 spot, or come in and play along side Kobe when #8 slides over to the wing. Best to Jumaine if this goes through, sounds like he'll get more playing time there, and hopefully it'll lead to a nice contract for him next year.
Fact is... he's the odd man out with the triangle offense. He was a wonderful spark off the bench last year. He's a physical player, plays hard defense and crashes the boards as hard as any SF around, but is limited otherwise. I don't see any added pressure on Devean or Luke. Kobe will play the SF spot on occasion as will Lamar. This position is still quite deep for the Lakers. I read previously someone asking why we don't trade Green / Profit / Parada instead which is laughable. None of those three are known around the league (except for Profit to an extent) and all three are considered the type of players anyone can pick up at anytime (whether true or not). The Lakers do have other assets that other clubs could be interested in (Kobe, Lamar, Mihm, Cook, Devean, Walton, Bynum, Kwame), but Kobe/Lamar/Kwame/Bynum are all considered cornerstone or potential cornerstone players. Cook may be on the verge of a breakout season (he appears to have earned a part of the regular rotation) and wouldn't bring back fair trade value. Walton is a PJ-favorite and Devean looks highly improved from the past couple seasons.
WOW. I cant believe Mitch Kupchak is giving up Jumaine for a second round draft pick what the Lakers should of done is dealt Jones in a package with Slava and another player for a big men to come off the bench. Im sorry but I dont know what the heck Mitch Kupchak is doing with this orginazation he let Kareem Rush also go last year too for a second round pick I dont know but what we coulda done if we still had Rush here is ship him and Jumaine for a good decent big man or back up point that shows promise like lets say a Marcus Banks.I think its time for Mitch Kupchak to go cuz it doesnt seem like hes really trying to improve the team but more like destroy it and another thing he needs to do is just get rid of the draft picks we dont need any rookies what we need is players to help us get into the playoffs not rookies that are not experienced we have passed on to many good players just because Mitch Kupchak isnt willing to trade his picks and another one of those good players is Jamal Magloire who was traded for Desmond Mason and a 1st round pick so Mitch im sorry but its time for Mitch to go and bring in a new face who knows how to put together a roster that will put up a good fight in the playoffs not a roster that looks like a total joke.
Come on now! Jumaine Jones is the kind of player you want in your team. He is the only player husstling out there in the court and he does all the dirty work. He rebounds, he shoots the 3 well and now you trade him to the Bobcats for a 2nd round pick? No wonder he looked all sad last night against the Utah...
With Fisher gone last year and now JJ, let's see who is going to husstle out there in the court... Brian Cook? LOL...
i'm really dissapointed with this trade. i'm not dissapointed that we let jumaine go, cus we already had a lot of small fowards, but i'm dissapointed at what we got in return. if management is going 2 ask us 2 be patient for them to rebuild this team, then they had better conduct things smartly. this is the second stupid move this offseason, the first was waiving vlade, instead of using his expiring contract as a trade bait.
I think we would only get a second rounder because the Bobcats probably don't think he's worth a first rounder and the Lakers want to trade him to clear roster space for Devin Green or Profit or one of the other young guys we like. Maybe 2 second rounders would make more sense, but I understand the thought process of everybody involved. It's even best for Jones, because he might get more PT on the bobcats.
Jones for a 2nd round pick. Screwed either way. It didnt' seem like Jones would have been playing a lot for Phil. So the trade of Payton to Boston has resulted to a 2nd round draft pick. Wow seems like the East profts from the Lakers trades/cuts.
It's done deal, JJ for a second round draft pick. Now, that's a smart move! When we're in desperate need for a decent PG or a big guy, we just give a player away for basically nothing. Keep up the good work, Mitch!
Im glad Jumaine is gone...second round pick will do nicely, especially given our glut of small forwards. I have full and utter confidence Phil knows exactly what he has on his hands.
Let me get this straight: Bobcats really want JJ. We Don't. Who played who here. Is it that we don't want to get rid of anyone else, so we just took a draft pick? Does Mitch think he'll use that second rounder in a trade down the road? We need defense. I know it's a small contract, but maybe we could have got another team involved and got some defensive help in the guard position. The only reason this move is acceptable is because Phil is got his eye on everything.
This trade to the bobcats at first glance seems like a bad move. Jones is a proven wing player and has a good all around game. Only problem is that Odom is starting at the SF this year with a healthy George to back him up. That leaves Jones with no minutes. Although the Lakers have needs at PG and C, trading Jones for Charlotte's 2nd round pick is a steal. Charlotte's 2nd round pick is basically the same as San Antonio's 1st round pick. No one in the league would have traded a 1st round pick to the Lakers for Jones, so a high 2nd round pick was the next best thing. The Lakers also got almost 2 million in exception money. combine that with the 2.5 mil they have left from their mid level exception and that almost gives us the full mid level. Can you say Spreewell?
Folks are missing the fact that since the second round pick is from the Bobcats it'll end up being pretty high. So it'll be an almost-first-rounder without the guaranteed contract, which is quite decent.
Jumaine Jones for a 2nd round pick may be a pretty bad move considering, most 2nd rounders don't really make the cut. Although there have been quite a few steals in the 2nd round ala MANU. Anyway, I was expecting a tarde that would have yielded a solid big man to come off the bench. Someone who can be a force inside to back up Mihm or Kwame. I'm sure Mitch could have packaged JJ with someone else on the Lakers roster in order to acquire someone from Charlotte that can contribute right away, like Melvin Ely. Not sure what Mitch is planning or even thinking.
We're going to bomb next year without a true point guard. I also see Bynum having to play a lot of minutes because Mihm can only go 25-30 a night. And when are the Laker big men (Mihm, Cook, Medvedenko) going to put on some much needed weight/muscle so they don't get overpowered under the glass and look like pansies that they did all last season? In conclusion, WE'RE SCREWED!
Just a reminder that the trade of Payton to Boston is more than just a 2nd rounder. Chris Mihm was the centerpiece of that deal. Chucky Atkins and Jumaine were throw-ins to that deal to make it work. The net of that deal has resulted in Chris Mihm, a 2nd round pick, AND Kwame Brown (with the help of Caron Butler).
i am really sorry to hear about this "?Trade?" (if you can call it that). JJ was a hustle player, and we need his energy off the bench.
I have not jumped on the "hate Mitch Kupcake" bandwagon this summer, because I was waiting to see if he might pull off some sort of move that kept in the Lakers tradition of bringing in exceptional talent, (because LA is a great city, and franchise to play in) ...but now, it seems like this is what Mitch is really all about(nothing)...unless of course he surprises us all and does something to help this team.
but for now, trading JJ, our real hustle guy...for a 2nd round pick...well, thanks Mitch...for nothing!

basketball, Andrew became a die hard Lakers fanatic after moving to L.A. to attend USC. That he managed to find a job requiring him to obsess over his favorite team, the same activity that prompted him to waste time while working other jobs, is pretty incredible. As for Brian, his baptism into pro hoops fandom has been provided by the "All Lakers, All The Time" citizens of Los Angeles. Beats the hell out of covering the Bucks.
I think Jones is worth more than a second round pick.Well if we do trade him that puts more pressure on Devan and Luke to step up their game!!
